We missed you Nick, and your finicky-ness. God bless you 😊
For the rest of the world I think the Matrix are the way to go for sure. In my (German) 911 992.1 I am not even entirely sure how to operate the light because everything works fully automatic all the time.
Agreed, well worth the upgrade cost outside of the US.
Great video. I have a new Audi RS 5 with Matrix Headlights and paid a guy $500 to turn on the full functionality. It's pretty neat. With headlight on Auto you'll see the high beams come on much sooner. Like with streetlights or around other cars, and then the Matrix Headlights do their thing and 'cast a shadow' around the other cars so you don't blind anyone. Then, if there's nothing around the Laser Lights also turn on which are insane. Glad I got it done. I'd recommend it if you can find a guy.
Always appreciate your insights and helping me choose where to spend on options!
The NHTSA approved adaptive matrix headlights in 2019 and as of 12/24 it’s still not permitting activation of these lights in the USA. Last year, the NHTSA said that they needed to do “their own testing” on the system. Shortly after that, they were no longer answering questions regarding adaptive headlights. For those in the United States, don’t count on seeing these for the next 10 years at least. US has consistently been behind Europe 25 to 30 years in lighting and other automotive technologies. Get used to the glare in your eyes and dangerous lighting in the US.
What is the deal with this? It’s almost as if they’re actually trying to inhibit new technology adoption.
Basically the result was that the USA market has different requirements than EU, so companies cannot just enable them if they're available in the EU. Rivian already has them enabled in the USA, soon to be Tesla as well.
Nothing could be further from the truth, unless you are only talking about Porsche. For example, Tesla and Rivian both come with fully-enabled Active Matrix headlights in the USA.
And I'm the guy on rennlist that documented how to activate the Porsche Cayenne headlights.
What is permitted in the United States is automatic high and low beam and beams that turn left and right. Those have been here for 35 years and automatic high low has been around since the 50s. None of the European style fully adaptive lights are legal in the United States
Full-time high beams with blocked out strategic spots are still illegal in the United States and that is not the system the Tesla or Rivian use
Great video Nick, top quality content and super informative.
Unnecessary hard work on your part - much appreciated!! Thank you
Top-notch as always, Nick. Dare I say this was...illuminating?
@@ddrennon I see what you did there
I have the HD Matrix LED headlights on my new facelifted Taycan and they are amazing.
I feel sorry for all in Fahrenheit land that you cannot benefit (legally) from all the cool functions.
And inches and feet!
This is the porsche content i never knew i needed. Thanks Nick!
Had the full matrix and laser lights activated on my 2024 RS6….they pretty awesome. If you can get them activated afterwards, highly recommend.
I remember when Audi first launched the Matrix headlights ( I believe in the A8), it blew my mind.
Headlights “blew your mind”
LOL😀😐😳😳
@anonymoushuman8962 lol, for real. There was a video at least a decade ago (GTboard maybe?) that really demonstrated the technology.
I don't know how many Porsche models have OTA updates, but I know on BMW'S that if you code the car to have the anti-dazzle feature, any OTA update will remove the coding.
It is fantastic when it's coded.
Thank you for posting. Video again Nick! Greatly miss your regularity and looking forward to the Macan EV video you mentioned.
I’ve had matrix on my cars since 2018 Opel Insignia as the first. Then 2020 Taycan 4S and on the 2018 Cayenne I traded that junk for. And now currently on my 2023 Kia EV6 GT. Matrix lights are a great safety feature. I always during the dark season drive with my brights engaged. We have no sun for 2 months straight up here inside the Arctic Circle, so I always opt for the most expensive headlight option. On my 2022 GT4RS I have the PDLS+ as they unfortunately don’t come with a matrix option, but I don’t drive it in the dark season as it’s parked up from October to April due to winter and salt on our snow covered roads. Not a very Cup2 friendly climate…
When I had my 2018 Carrera T with PDLS+ (no matrix option either) alongside my Taycan I got to test them side by side with the Taycans matrix and the speed and length was much better, albeit the sheer brightness seemed a tad better on the PDLS+ light of the 991.2. Might very well be the same for the 992.2 cars, but I’d still undoubtedly spec the matrix lights.
Cheers all!
Btw the Porsche matrix is way better than the Kia ones.. Even on the 2018 Cayenne vs 2023 Kia.
Hi Nick, great content as usual. My 992.2 Carrera T order locks on Jan 14, cant wait for your options video! 😅 Still hesitating on some options…
Very helpful. Thank you, Nick!
Nick, thanks for shedding a light on this. 😁 9XX re-coded the matrix headlights on my U.S. spec 2022 Cayenne about 15 months ago. I thought the 84 pixel matrix headlights were poor as delivered. The low beam cutoff was too sharp and the throw too short. The automatic high beams didn't turn on until around 35 mph and they dimmed when oncoming vehicles were far too far away - about 2,600 feet per Porsche documentation. After re-coding, the high beams turn on at just over 18 mph and stay on unless there is adequate light from overhead lights or from a mass of oncoming vehicles. It doesn't seem to bother oncoming drivers that my high beams are on since not a single driver has flashed their high beams in irritation since 9XX did the re-coding. Also, my Night Vision Assist on the Cayenne now caused the headlights to flash targeted beams of light at pedestrians and cyclists on or near the roadway to warn both them and me. It does seem to sometimes confuse motorcyclists with bicyclists and flash at them too.
I had them on my S3 and never used them because the dipped LED beam was so good I hardly ever needed full beam.
Compliment of the season Nick!
It's nothing against the headlights, Nick. Porsche is saying "matrix" and NHTSA are hearing "metrics". And I think we have been very clear with our feeling on the metric system.
@@cvn6555 we are American. We are not interested in progress!
@@NickMurray Unless it can be used for blowing things up or War then oh yeah we'll pay triple . AGM - 114 Hellfire " Flying Ginsu " ... wtf who makes this stuff up ?
@@NickMurray I find it odd when anyone describes the Metric system as "progress". In all seriousness, look at the list of American innovations and inventions. In the 20th century we were the home of progress.
I have the LED Matrix on my 992.1 Targa and it’s quite the drain on the flux capacitor.
The lights on my 911S actually focus on road signs too. It’s astonishing. Maybe this is normal nowadays but I am very happy with this feature. It’s a nice toy. I got the top ones. The cost me a few grand.i forgot what they are called.
I am I’m the uk.
That's a hell of a quiff!
Me watching this knowing that I can’t afford a Porsche scale model 😂😂
I miss your videos!! Welcome back
It looks like, from multiple videos, that the matrix lights eliminate the sharp cutoffs associated with emulating a single light source even though they are supposed to be programmed like that.
Great video - my '22 Audi RS3 comes with matrix led headlights that are also disabled. There are people out there that would unlock/code them for some $400-500 but I'm just going to wait till someone publish the long codes for enabling them (DLA - dynamic light assist is how I believe Audi calls them) via VCDS or OBD11 Pro. I already found instractions for enabling them on some models of VW, it's a matter of time till the codes become available to the public for free (I hope). 👍
Hi nick i wonder if you are thinking of doing a 992.2 options video i know your probably waiting for the normal S models to be released great content as usual
The matrix LEDs just look so much better
Oooh - fresh all-option videos incoming! 😃👌
The best headlights i ever had in a car were the BMW Laser lights. Sadly they stoppend producing them, because they were too expensive to produce.
These headlights have also the active function, but it is accomplished by small mirrors.
340 Lux....
they didn't stopped producing them because they were too expensive, they were just behind the competition with no matrix function, that's why they changed to matrix lights and stopped using the laser, which was nothing but an additional high beam for more range, but it is not necessary anymore since the matrix lights have more power/range
@@dr-ok3sn laser is .6 mile range vs .3 miles for matrix. Double with laser. BMW has worst luminosity however. VAG some of the brightest.
@ Laser has more power and range. I don’t want to argue. It also has the “matrix” function, just a mechanical one. It was a cost decision; the 8 series is the last model you can order it still.
@@paulallenpierceandpierceWrong. Ditched the laser tech for LED as its brighter and better
@@kunaalkhanna that's was like 10 years ago, and nobody is talking about vag in this case.
Thank you for this. I’ve been trying to understand the difference with Porsche’s “limited” functionality comment.
Finally someone who understands and acknowledges this difference.
My partner has a new Lexus NX here in Australia, and yes… it has the FULL matrix LED headlights. The headlights have 4 light modules within them. At night they literally move around the cars in front. It’s incredible to watch.
Yet the US version of the same headlight only has 3 light modules… so essentially it’s just auto-high beam on/off ie. Not adaptive.
I’d heard about the changes in the US legislation, but didn’t know about the nuances you referred to.
Damn it’s weird
Any chance of a Q&A episode before we see out the year, Nick? Best, Christopher
You read my mind with the third-party coding. I was just about to ask whether anybody's figured out a way to get around it.
Even though I don't have a Porsche nor am I a huge fan of them, I love these nerdy, deviated-stitching-type of videos. Keep them coming.
9XX is the way to go. Full functionality after re-coding and fully legitimate!
I'm learning everyday 🎉❤
Interesting because my Macan has the 4 horizontal lines in the headlights that make it look like the matrix ones but never said anything about matrix in the window sticker
@@Alex.AL_26 matrix has never been offered on the Macan models aside from the EV
Nick, In your upcoming 992.2 Options video, can you also discuss prepaid maintenance plan? The dealership said if I didn’t get it; I will pay thousands more in the future per each interval maintenance and it would be harder to sell the car
This is a hard topic to explain because there is no set price for the prepaid maintenance and no set price for the cost of maintenance at each dealer. For example, my local dealer charges $450 for an oil service on a 911, where as 20 miles down the road Porsche of Greenwich charge $1,700 for the same service. Both dealerships also charge completely different amounts for the maintenance plan. So unfortunately you have to find out if your dealer is ripping you off for service and run the numbers both ways. Of course it makes NO difference to how easy it is to sell the car, if your dealer said that then already they are a bunch of scumbags and I would be careful because they will be scamming you in other ways for sure.
@ thanks Nick that make sense. Here in LA the maintenance prices are on the higher side
Nice explained.
Waiting for your Macan EV review.
All love doing top superfast models' reviews. No one is doing base RWD model review? 🙃
simple fix in the US: just unlock the the matrix function via obd
My A8 4.0 has Matrix with Laser. Laser works vbove 48mph but Matrix is turned off in software. Euro price will turn them on for about 1200 bucks
Rivian claim to have updated matrix headlights. Are you going to order a 992.2 Nick?
First vehicle in the US to have that functionality open. Hopefully the rest will follow soon.
@@RealDKuz I believe Tesla was first to have cars on USA roads with Active Matrix headlights. 2 years ago. Rivian just started shipping theirs with the Gen 2 R1T/R1S in the last few months.
@@runbuh Teslas are shipped with matrix but they aren’t actually activated. Like Porsche etc. Rivian is first one to have them actually activated from factory :)
@@RealDKuz You know what - I do believe that you are 100% correct!
I loved your original video you did so many years ago testing the lights on your garage door. You advised us well then, as you are doing today! Thank you. Big question... can your research determine if new Canadian cars suffer the same affliction? Cheers from Canada!
No this is a US only issue, Canada has the full features.
Fahrenheit Land! Priceless!😂
If I had a car that had this functionality I would absolutely have it coded in.
You’re looking really healthy Nick 👍🏻😎
I have this thing called PIWIS stashed under my bed, fun stuff 😊
All the while allowing standard LED headlights from all mfgs to blind oncoming traffic through that loophole. Way to go FMVSS and NHTSA.
How they compare BMW laser lights ? They so bright the reflect well on signs in daylight.
IMO, emotion dictates how decisions are made on the US. According to Jay Leno, the highway speed limit was originally decided by blindfolding passengers and asking them what speed they felt uncomfortable in the car. Today, they just correlate increased speed with increased fatalities(even if the increase is less than a percent). Yet, they allow self-driving cars that run over pedestrians and have brake failures on the road 😅
Thanks Nick. Any consideration of covering BMW M3's in your content?
The USA spec' of some motorcycles doesn't even feature the basic model LED indicators fitted as standard elsewhere in the world.
Great video wish I had the cash for a Porsche.
Hi Nick. I am building a 992.2 now and was going to select the HD Matrix because it includes “Cornering lights”. Are you saying that option will not work in the US? Thanks - PS I would also love an options video for the 992.2 but my built also freezes on 1/14.
@@CarlThomas-c4b correct matrix lights will do absolutely nothing different than standard lights in the US
Thanks for clarifying. So disappointing. Your videos are awesome!
Nick, what is the thing that’s always flashing and changing colors in the other room off your right shoulder?
Porsche LED headlights are insanely expensive. A Porsche dealer just quoted me $6,074 per side for 992 911 headlamps and $4,700 per side for my Macan GTS. That’s mad!
That's wild considering that Suncoast Porsche sells a set of OEM "Black Trimmed LED Matrix Headlights (PDLS Plus)" for the 992.1 through their website for only $3,995.
Arent the standard headlights also Matrix? And the other one is Matrix HD? Thats how its listed in the EU config.
My understanding is that, starting in 2024, the standard headlights are 84 pixel matrix and the optional headlights are HD 32,000 pixel matrix.
Nick… you need to make more videos..😜
I liked the previous design better. It sort of looked like an X and harkened back to the black X tape over racing headlights.
That's crazy. I was very excited when I heard about the law update a couple of years ago. Too bad the full functionality law is making us do illegal things to get the full functionality.
Macan EV's Popular? Maybe for your area, and for the next few months... but these will collect dust on dealer lots just like the Taycan in short order.
What about the ‘24 Cayenne matrix lights? Is it possible to code it to be fully functional?
yes
Why not to talk directly to NHTSA about it? There should be a reason for their decision
Car makers, Asian, European and domestic, have been lobbying the NHTSA to allow fully adaptive matrix headlights since around 2014 if I remember correctly. The reason for the NHTSA decision? My take is that the NHTSA has long had a "not invented here" attitude and has endeavored to mask this attitude with pseudoscience and paranoia.
Just get them flashed. No one -- except maybe California (because they're insane) -- is going to bother anyone about them actually working as intended, and most aren't going to even notice.
I'm curious what the service life of the lights is, compared to the standard led. More complicated usually means more expensive and more replacements required
Maybe I’m missing something, but my Mercedes high beams have matrix LEDs. They “paint” the road according to oncoming car headlights, or steering angle. Why can’t Porsche do this?
They can. My older 84-pixel Porsche system has "Encounter light" which increases the intensity of light when oncoming vehicles are encountered on 2-lane roads so that the driver can better focus on the lane he is driving in. My 84-pixel Porsche headlights are also curve adaptive but instead of physically swiveling, additional LED's turn on to illuminate the insides of curves. Per RUclips videos I've watched, the 32,000 pixel Porsche system paints the road with much more intensity and flexibility but only on certain road types.
Ha I wore that shirt today LOL
Comments are blacked out…
Nice glasses
The matrix lights make the car look like Snoop Dog.
All you have to do is buy whatever you want from Europe and install it in your car here. Nobody checks aftermarket modifications in the US. If you can make your exhaust ridiculously loud, your diesel blow smog or install a train horn without consequence, who’s going to care if you install better headlights?!
Nick, can you get ticketed for using the Matrix headlights?
I hope Nick won't mind me answering. Headlights have been sort of a hobby of mine since the 1960's because of my vision issues. I doubt that law enforcement would know if you have fully functional matrix headlights. When the high beams are on, it will appear to oncoming drivers that your low beams are on. A camera tracks the movements of oncoming (and preceding) vehicles and turns individual LED's off and on to keep from blinding them. (The older 84 pixel matrix systems can track up to 10 oncoming vehicles at a time but I don't know about the newer 32,000 pixel systems.) If you are behind police vehicles, it would appear in their rear view mirrors that only your low beams are on. But if they are paying attention, they might notice that your adaptive high beams are illuminating features ahead of and to the sides of their vehicles that their own headlights are not illuminating. Also, on Porsche it is easy to deactivate the matrix adaptive feature with the headlight control lever on the steering wheel so that the headlights operate as traditional headlights.
@@H2SO4H20 Thanks for the detailed explanation. Very interesting.
No true matrix headlights in the US, though NHTSA allows too bright LEDs. Ugh.
If you can afford a new Porsche 992.2 you're probably of an age, like me, where you prefer not to drive at night if at all possible.
Maybe you would want to drive more at night if you had fully functioning LED matrix headlights. My night vision sucks at age 74 but I now go driving at night just for the entertainment of seeing the matrix headlights do their magic.
I hope you already annoyed your local dealership about the cheap Start Stop button in the 992.2 and received some hints on Porsche reversing their stupid decision maybe? :D
Interesting video Nick. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to show we fortunate Europeans why USA drivers have limited visibility of oncoming events. Perhaps the highway regulations authorities will cease to exist once Mr. Musk completes his planned works, which may help.
US headlights laws are as ancient as the law makers.
Hands, hands, hamds.... only hands..............
The base headlamp design looks more " 911 "
Follow the white rabbit
Tbh you aren’t missing much they are a bit rubbish for the extra cost
Given the absurd Headlight Wars currently ongoing in Canada, I wish you could mandate adaptive headlights here. I am routinely blinded by most every new car. It's legit to the point I avoid driving at night as even the lights behind you blind you via the side-mirrors. It's dangerous. Add in Amazon sells LED headlights with names like "The Punisher" that advertise they are 3x brighter than stock LEDs. Yah, 'cause you really need that... Dickheads.
C'mon Nick, buy a new 911 for some content!... and your own enjoyment ;)
Nice 💄
dude needs to get laid stat lol! love the videos!
hopefully this is one of the things Trump & Elon will get on. He's made comments on the "onerous regulatory burdens" that cars have in US and has CARB and the silly EPA rules in their sights. I have a porsche sitting in CARB Jail right now at a US port, and it's been there for over a month.
Well…
That is quite interesting, I think … because this road administration did allow a crap truck 🛻 from Tesla to be on the road 😂
Hate all these newer cars with their blinding LEDs and the oversized, lame, completely unnecessary SUVs
Nick, are you lowkey transitioning to a Trump haircut ?
$300-$500 doesn't seem prohibitively expensive for someone who's already popped $100k-$400k for a Porsche.
