Growing up in the late Soviet Union it was always my dream wearing one of the Casio’s to school, it was practically an unobtanium to have a Casio calculator watch. It usually involved a trip to a black market meet, risking loosing your cash or being arrested. And such it remained a dream until I came to the land of the free. And then I saw your videos and it rejuvenated my dream of acquiring a true calculator watch. Thanks to you, my friend, I now have my own Casio Databank that I can easily switch to Tokyo time when we travel with my wife to Japan or breakdown a restaurant bill between the friends and figure out who “don’t believe in tips”.

Nick, the fact that you explain the intricacies of these watches as well as the Porsche engineers discussing the new 911 GTS t-hybrid technology this week fascinates me and reveals how much time you have spent on this calculator watch obsession. More importantly, the fact that your viewers watch your entire 20 minute video on calculator watches (not Porsche, flight videos, or even dog videos), should tell you how much we enjoy your take on any aspect of life. Cheers.

Looking forward to Parts 2 & 3, especially seeing currently manufactured & commercially available watches. Interesting that battery technology is said to have advanced, yet it was still possible to make a compact wrist-worn device in the mid seventies! Often tempted by a modern device, however mobile phones may have taken over……..

The "Calcron" solar watch was made by Chronar, the successor of the legendary Optel Corporation, the company that created the very first LCD wristwatch back in 1972. I don't know if the first one was ever manufactured, since all we know of that watch is the scan from that Playboy magazine advert. Most likely, judging by what we can see from that picture, the first gen Calcron wasn't even a full fledged watch but just a wearable calculator much like the ill-fated Sinclair Wrist Calculator, unlike its solar successor. Optel also made a prototype LCD calculator watch before going bust in 1976, leading to the creation of Chronar and the subsequent introduction of their solar calculator watch (aka Calcron Solar).

Who else remembers these watches being banned from the classroom back in the day?
We _all_ knew that kid with one of these calculator watches. I think most of us even had a few teachers rocking the "digi" - usually a Casio.
    Speaking of old calculators.
My Father surprised me one day with his personal _slide rule_ from antiquity times (as I would always say). That was the first and only time I have ever seen a slide rule, which was another early form of calculator for the uninformed. I thought to myself, _"Great. What's next? An abacus?!"_
Nevertheless, I appreciate the nostalgia, Nick.
    Stay classy my friends.
