Same with me, haven’t really properly ridden bikes for around 3 years. But over the last couple of weeks, I’m back!! So good to be back on a bike again
Due to time and weather constraints I've barely ridden this summer. I have been running a 5k every other day for around 2 months though, and I'm definitely getting fitter. However I need to keep going, undo decades of sitting at a desk, and really hammer the cycling again.
Went off backpacking for nearly a year but was involved in a traffic accident while away and flown back home after months in a foreign hospital. FTP has gone from 280 down to less than 200. About to turn 40 and really hoping it's not too late to build it back up. 😬
look at the hamburg cyclassics results for the hobby riders. fokus on the +40 +50 +60y old dudes, some of them still kill it! :) as a matter of fact most frontrunners are masters I or II
252 @ 71kg @ 52yo back in April but inconsistent training due to work and travel has me thinking its roughly the same but will find out in a couple weeks. Target 4w/kg by end year 🤞
Funny, that this video popped up on youtube...I am in exactly the same situation...just it were almost 10 years breake of structured bike training. a few weeks ago a new bike, a powermeter and an ftp test. I also couldn't get my heartrate up to nearly my old values or to the values I have when doing my HIIT workouts, which I did a lot in the recent months. I also lost about 60 Watts. One addition...in 2019 I broke my knee without having any treatment, but this seems to be no issue for cycling contrary to running.
ahh what a coincidence! Amazing, well I wish you all the best getting back on the bike and improving your fitness! Fingers crossed your knee stays pain free :)
My highest based off a 2x20min test is about 380w. Now after absolutely zero training since we had our first child just over two years ago…I mean not even regular walking (I feel terrible!) after few rides on the mtp my ftp is around about 240-250w. Wouldn’t bother me so much if I hadn’t also put on about 10kg🤣 at least I’m starting to change things now though
wow that's some power! I'm sure you'll be able to get back to where you were with a little consistency! I think we all go through phases in life where other things are more important though eg. having a kid as you've said haha!
what did turbo did you do your last ftp test on; think i have seen you on a watt bike, you are now on a tacx neo; if you repeated that exercise on any other turbo i 100% say you will get a higher result; so IMO yes you have lost fitness but you are now on a turbo that does not massage egos (unless you are using a sep power meter to measure your power)
Yeah I did my last one on a Watt bike so you're 100% correct there that there will be a difference in result because of that! Looking forward to doing a re-test on the neo in a few weeks to see where I'm at!
Cadence seemed low when you gave out. Would burn the legs more than the cardio. I bet you gain 20 Watts if you retest. Ramp test is also measuring MAP really and estimating FTP. Critical power using 3min and 12min max effort or something like the 4DP Full Monty on Wahoo Systm would be more interesting.
cademce is naturally higher when you're fitting/logging more time on the bike. For experienced cyclists, self-selected cadence is usually about optimal
Yeah I've always had a slightly lower than average cadence. But you're right, now I've been consistently riding the past few weeks I'll have most likely gained a fair few watts from technique alone! I need to complete a more thorough test for sure!
Thanks for watching! Ahh essentially I wasn't using it over my time off and it took up a decent bit of room, so pretty much managed to sell it for the same price I purchased it for! Nothing against the bike, it was a great purchase!
That is an unusually large untrained FTP number, and is not indicative of what most athletes should expect after detraining. You must have a really impressive genetic start. What is your VO2 Max?
Yeah, I'm fairly fit non cycling wise so I think that's most likely why! Still a fairly fit runner and strong in the gym so fingers crossed my cycling legs come back quickly! My Vo2 max is around 60 for cycling according to my garmin so fairly high I think!
What’s your current FTP? 🚴
221W estimated from garmin. will see what the watch says after next sunday.
Around 340, but I'm a bigger rider and currently training regularly
250 at 83kg. Although I am more of a sprinter. 1100w for 10 seconds.
220 @ 65kg middle age
3.37 W/kg as of 10 days ago.

Glad you’re back and enjoying it again :D

I think the weather has troubled a lot of us this summer hasn't it haha!! Running will definitely be maintaining some of that cycling fitness!

Oh wow sorry to hear that but glad you're back to it now! It's never too late! I'm sure you'll be able to get back to your prior form :D

I love zwift , done it every day just about for last year, ,gone from under 170 to 200. Hopefully more to come,,,55 yrs so guess numbers r OK 👌
Awesome, great work! That's not bad if you ask me! Keep it up!

Awesome, great work! 4w/kg is no joke!

Hi nice video what’s the story with the watt bike?
Thanks for watching! Ahh essentially I wasn't using it over my time off and it took up a decent bit of room, so pretty much managed to sell it for the same price I purchased it for! Nothing against the bike, it was a great purchase!
Thanks for the reply I’ve been considering the wattbike myself so good to know there wasn’t an issue with it.
