Funny, and nice theme for a video !
For a long time, i'm applying a rule : If a new game enter into my collection, an old one leaves it !
So it's also been a long time i'm trying to reduce my possession and therefore my boardgames collection.
I'm at the moment @ something like 30 games, and i'm still working to reduce those to around 20
But i realized that i might also make 2x10 games :
-10 games for my solo and Duo plays (wich are 90% of my plays)
-10 games when i got some friends at home
So For now (in no particular order) :
    Top 10 solo-duo :
    1) Aeon's end (well this one is actualy top 1 ! ^^)
    2) Spirit Island
    3) Lord of the rings LCG
    4) Cthulhu Death May Die
    5) Set a Watch
    6) Clank in space
    7) Sentinel of the multiverse (definitive ed.)
    8) Gears of war
    9) Paleo (or Robinson Crusoe)
    10) Street Masters
(if i had to keep 3 : Aeon's End - Cthulhu DmD - LotR LcG)
    Top 10 Party-Game :
    1) Detective Club
    2) Mysterium Park
    3) DownForce
    4) Men at Work
    5) Welcome to the moon
    6) Loco Momo
    7) Cascadia
    8) FlipShips
    9) The Game
    10) Little town
(If i had to only keep 3 : FlipShips - Detective club - Cascadia)
Only 10 to keep no matter wich players count :
    1) Aeon's end
    2) Lotr LCG
    3) Cascadia
    4) The Game
    5) FlipShips
    6) Cthulhu Death May Die
    7) Detective Club
    8) Spirit Island
    9) Set a watch
    10) Paleo (or robinson crusoe)
    Cheers ;)

After spending a year with your channel, I now own Black Plague, Everdell, Blood Rage, and Too Many Bones based on your videos. I subscribe to multiple content creators, but your recommendations have consistently led me to games that will remain in my collection for a long time. I guess you are my Chris Stuckman of board game content creators.
With that said, Assuming that I could bring all of the content currently available and I could only have five games, it would be Street Masters, Too Many Bones, Arkham Horror LCG, Everdell, and Lord of the Rings LCG.

Cyclades is in my top 3 favourite games. Once u add modules from all 3 expansions + kemet crossover + Hecate promo, every game plays differently, different paths open up.
Another way to think about desert island games is which games you would hate to never be able to play again. Cyclades would be up there.

Everdell is my favourite game and I can't wait for the big box to arrive! I say this, and I've not even played the expansions yet! I can't believe it only gets richer and more varied; I'm very excited to play with expansions!
Everdell is most certainly in my deserted island list! Also Village, The West Kingdom series (that's 3 more), A Feast for Odin and Fantastic Factories.

I would bring a few of your ten -
Terraforming Mars, Marvel Champions: LCG, Too Many Bones,
but switch out a few for -
Lost Ruins of Arnak with Expedition Leaders, Dwellings of Everdale, Castles of Burgundy, and Kemit: Blood & Sand

I appreciate a list like this, similar to some of your pasts lists for a starter collection and such. Seeing the different thought approach vs the usual "favorite" games is enjoyable.
I'd like to see some "Top 10" lists based on a game mechanic. ie. Top 10 games featuring rondel, and so on and so forth.

I've actually been in this very same scenario, but with 3 games to keep - and approaching that situation again. The two light pnp games I had were too light to make me forget of the stress of the world, so I kept diving into the more complex game (Fields of Fire), and that was the only one that did the trick. Anyways, great content and video!

Have you ever thought of making/made a if I could only keep the games I fit into 1 Kallax/8 cube organizer? Would love to hear your thoughts when you have to have the high replay-ability but low space requirements, since they seem to almost always have an inverse relationship. Plus it would be really cool for you to actually do it and see it as you unpack the cubes and explain each game!

Great idea for a topic! I like your list, though we don’t have many crossovers (mainly because I don’t have several of the games on your list), but I’m thinking Everdell will be on my list once it finally arrives =) I was curious why you went with Arena: The Contest over Wild Assent which seem to be similar game experiences and I know you’ve rated Wild Assent highly in the past.
Here are my top 10 deserts island games (this list implies that the relevant expansions for each would also be present):
    Dune Imperium
    Too Many Bones
    Lost Ruins of Arnak
    Crokinole
    Aquatica
    Cascadia
    Land vs Sea
    7 Wonders Duel
    Code Names Duet
    Mystic Vale
And two decks of playing cards… I think it’d be fine to throw these in the mix since they’re not technically a board game =)

  • @laurenherrmann_videos
    @laurenherrmann_videos 2 года назад

Did my list intuitively just now. If I checked my BGG list I may swap a couple.
1- Feudum: I love the sandbox aspect of this game and I love all the nuance (rules that others may describe as fiddly). I feel like the better a person learns the systems in this game/world the more exciting the gameplay would be. There will always be variability, especially with the Alter Ego expansion, plus the Solo expansion is super challenging.
2- Root: for a lot of the same reasons you cited, particularly the variability. I like the theme of Root over other area control game themes that may get tiring after a while.
3- Nertz (aka 8 decks of cards). Decks of cards are probably the most versatile thing to work with, game-wise and the retail version of nertz comes with 8 decks, I believe. Obviously I'd prefer to choose 8 decks of cards from my own collection, but I'm using nertz as an excuse to have multiple decks. Gotta be resourceful on a desert island.
4- speaking of resourceful, I thought it only fit to add Robinson Crusoe. For the survival aspect, but also because I've haven't played it yet and have heard so many good things about it. I've heard it's very challenging so I'll have that to look forward to over time as well.
5- Big Boggle: I wanted to throw a word game on here, because I love word games and this game can accommodate a large number of players, plus it has infinite replayability, you can do a 4x4 or 5x5 grid, and you can always make it more challenging by increasing the minimum word length.
6- My copy of Cards Against Humanity and a roll of removable white-out tape: Hear me out! I have a highly customized, fully sleeved, biggest box version of this game. I would include it because not only is it a good, versatile, easy to learn party game, but it is also something of a cultural artifact. With sleeves and white out tape you can change out stale cards, and you can make it kid friendly by removing the adult cards. It's still fun to play. You can create other games with the cards too. Lots of versatility. Definitely coming.
7-twilight imperium or gloomhaven. I haven't played either of these yet, but I know they are both long and complex character-driven games highly rated on BGG. If you have the time, why not include one of these? I'd need to do more research before deciding, but I want a game like this to be on the list.
8- Dinosaur Island + expansions Kickstarter edition: simply put, I love dinosaurs and had to include a dinosaur game on my list. This one is meaty and fun, albiet less efficient than other versions of the game. I think there's enough variability to keep it from getting stale.
9- Wingspan with expansions: one of my favorite games, lots of replayability, good solo mode, it's mid-weight, it's educational... I may adjust the board to make the eggs less hoardable. I actually think there's potential to use the bird cards to create other games, if bored.
10- Cascadia or Sagrada: I love puzzles, so one of these two puzzle games would be coming along. I lean toward sagrada, only because it has more expansions and therefore potentially more complexity and replayability. I think in 5 years cascadia might have more expansions, so it might be the pick, it's too new to say just yet. Sagrada also has a ton of dice so you could easily play other dice-based games.
I considered adding chess, but it's easy enough to make your own chess set.

  • @codym6376
    @codym6376 2 года назад +1

    Hmm, I would include:
    1. Ohanami; simple and relaxing but gets a boost because you can use the deck numbered 1-120 to also play “The Mind” or “The Game” and maybe some others.
    2. Everdell: The complete collection if it ever shows up. Good game and so many options with all these expansions.
    3. The Quest for El Dorado: I enjoy deck building and racing and this game has many options for creating varied race tracks. I can imagine creating a race track that loops or make a figure eight.
    4. The Crew. I enjoy trick taking and you want one with lots of variety if you are stuck.
    5. Something with dice because that’s fun. I need more dice games, but maybe Dice Throne for now, especially if I had one or multiple battle chests. Then I might even play those team modes. Too Many Bones is too big a game for my real life, but on this island it sounds great.
    6. I want a polyomino game. I don’t have Project L, but that is the one I want to try. I’m hoping it goes on sale for Nerdz days this July.
    7. An abstract strategy game. I don’t own many but would want to try Yinsh or maybe Onitama.
    8. Would want something with story telling potential. Clank: Legacy maybe. Don’t own it yet but I’m sure I’d buy it before I got on this plane that’s going to crash land off the coast of this island. And even after you play it. After two years go by you would be okay doing it again. I’m sure better choices are there, but I don’t have a ton of board game experiences like these yet.
    9. Crokinole
    10. I feel like I need another big game here. I don’t play many of those but would want something like Castles of Burgundy or Obsession.
Honorable mention: Telestrations because we need to laugh and it’s got lots of cards. Might be a problem with running out of ink though.

Always excruciating trying to boil games collections down to just a handful of games. If I had to though, in no specific order they would be:
    - Cyclades (Incl Hades Expansion for occasional variety)
    - Cosmic Encounter
    - Lords of Vegas
    - Inis
    - Brass Lancashire
    - Space Empires 4x (with Close Encounters expansion)
    - Castles of Burgundy
    - Tigris & Euphrates
    - 7 Wonders (what got me into the hobby & including expansions that I've not yet played with)
    - Rising Sun (if I never had to set it up and pack it away again!)
    - Dominion (sneaking in an 11th game as contraband - only just played it after owning it for 4 years untouched and immediately fell in love with it!)

You describe the scenario as being on a deserted island with family and friends, and then lament what it says about you that you want your family with you instead of wishing them well on the mainland. Well, consider an alternative scenario that gets you to the same place: an apocalyptic event that destroys all of civilization and humanity except you and your family and close friends. Now you're happy your family survived and is with you!

If I could only ever play 5 games and none of them are solo only:
1- Aeon's End with all content. I can replay this forever. I have 76 games played and there are still a lot of content I havent used.
2- Shadows of Brimstone. With it's random dungeon creation and the amount of content I have, and the fact that you can imagine your own story, this can be replayed without end, and with many people.
3- Mage Knight, mostly solo but playable at 2. Would not play at more then 2. Infinite replayability and I just love the card system.
4- Sub Terra, with all content - Can be played with up to 4 players very easily, fun and simple.
5- Too Many Bones with all content
Bonus 6: Something light and easy for everyone, maybe Cartographers or That's Pretty Clever! or even a simple deck or ordinary cards. The more I think about it, I think a deck of ordinary cards should be #1.

Oh brother, Tanares 5E still had its PM open. I backed out of the KS campaign because I couldn't get over the fact I was jumping in late and would have to pay more to catch up. So I opened the PM and told myself "Just get the base game and TA, that's got all the campaign stuff". That was before I saw the legendary box. I thought, "Oh, I gotta get that, it doesn't make sense not to". Then I learned the Madness Box is like a 3rd expansion and Penumbral is a 4th AND there's a Scenery pack to go with it. "What's this, 4 more packs with heros and villains? Eh, I don't really want all these boxes though." Guess what, they fit into Penumbral Box. "OK, well I certainly don't want the Dragon Box, that's mainly for Boss vs Boss skirmishes. Wait, is that another hero in there? Might aswell add Medusa too, then I'll have all the playable characters. Hey is that the Dragon Alex has on his shelf? 10 bucks? COOL!" By that time it was just cheaper to buy all the bundles. "Wow, that fire breathing Dragon mini is only $15 now. And they'll paint it for me? COOOOOL! Paint Tarrassque too please!" In other words, I lost control. Would you believe EVERYTHING board game related was less than $100 to ship? I couldn't believe it. I still don't know what I'm gonna tell my wife when this pledge gets delivered. I know it's going to be epic and I'm glad there was still time to pledge. Thanks for reminding us how much you enjoy the game.

It's a great list. I own several of these games. I think if you have played Pax Pamir, you might even consider to change one of your games in your list and add Pax P and maybe even consider to change Root with Pax Pamir. I like Root too, but Pax Pamir is a sublime experience (area control, historical theme, tons of player interaction, clean design) when you play with experienced players.

As I only have around 50 games, I'm going to stick to a list of 4.
    Rising Sun
A ton of content, a ridiculous amount of variability, area control, negotiation and lots of strategy.
    Cosmic Encounter
With the ridiculous amount of aliens around, there's going to be so many options for bringing this to the table.
    Dominion
Also good at two players, there's a ton of content here with all the expansions available.
    Massive Darkness 2
In contrast to the conflict of the above, here's something cooperative with ridiculous amounts of content.
Things that I'd be hopeful to add to this list:
    Too Many Bones
Waiting on my Trove Chest and gameplay all in.
    Everdell
Waiting on my big box collection.

I'd probably just take a deck of cards and a big bag of meeples and keep designing my own games in this scenario. Other than that, Cry Havoc, Five Tribes, King of Tokyo Dark, Neuroshima Hex, Century Golem & Tash-Kalar would probably be on my list, as I really like all of them a lot, but never quite find the time to dig in as much as I'd like. I don't think it's a commonly used term, but it should be, since the books thing is anyway. I've always thought the desert island thing is a bit weird since it pretty much negates any chance of survival, and I don't even travel with my games anyway, but that's missing the point. I absolutely agree with you, though, a lot of the games on my collection that could be considered "the best" would not make the list probably due to several factors like player count, complexity and such. I'd likely have just solo games to be honest. Funny to see how a lot of my favorite games are not "BGG top" games.

Having not played Cthulhu Death May Die, I can't say if it is better than Zombicide: Black Plague/Green Horde (which I consider a single game). And this might apply, too. But until I get Marvel Zombies, Z:BP/GH would definitely be on this list for me, for the simple reason that it is possible and fairly easy to generate your own content. Beyond the variability of different characters, different abominations, mixing up the zombie types for existing scenarios, you can simply make your own scenarios. Make a gladiatorial arena where you have to fight off specific sets of zombies. A stealth scenario where each noise generates more enemies. Plus, I think the game plays well in any count up to 6, and is cooperative, so less annoyance and hard feelings when you are trapped with a specific set of people in a confined area.
And to that point, yes, at least where I am, 'desert island' is a common phrase. I've had job interview where they asked (excepting a means of escape) what five things would you take to a desert island.
Marvel Champions and Too Many Bones would definitely be on the list for me. I don't own Terraforming: Mars, but if I could swipe a friend's copy, it would be on the list. Codenames I would take, if I could cheat and bring it as a set (Codename, Codenames: Disney, Codenames: Marvel, Codenames: Duet, etc.).
Power Rangers: Heroes of the Grid is one of my top ten, and it has a ton of content, but I'm not sure it would make the list. I haven't dug deep into the new scenarios or the last full expansion, so maybe they would push it onto the list. But so much as I love the game and the different Rangers and enemies, without scenarios (again, need to dive in), I'm afraid if it was one of only ten, the basic loop would get repetitive.
On the flip side Villainous (again taken as a big box with all the variants) wouldn't make my regular top ten, but might make this list for the asymmetry of the various character. Maybe. I'm not sure.
And what I really want for this list, but can't decide on at the moment, is an RPG style board game with a campaign. Something that (not unlike Z:BP/GH) I can expand upon. Use as a basis for an RPG. Bring in and adapt characters from these other games (which makes me reconsider PR: HotG) for more variability in the base game.

I had the most AP during any game with Spirit Island the one and only time I've played it. I think the problem was compounded because I did not want to let my group down in a cooperative game whereas in a competitive game, I'm ok with taking a less optimal move to speed up the game for all at the expense of my winning chances. However, I saw the potential in the game and it would be my #1 game on a deserted island. It's not a game remotely in my top 300 games right now.

Love the gameplay of Inis. The draft is so thinky as you try to figure out how to do what you need to do and prevent others from getting what they need. Following that, the play and results of each of your turns are so subtle and smooth. Then again I also love the art of Inis as well. I can see why the box cover might not be someone's favorite style but I really think the board tiles and the cards are fantastic. It's definitely worth a play if you ever have the chance.

very surprised to see that Mind MGMT didn't make the cut. It has so much scale playing from one to five players. There are many different ways to play it since the game is very different playing as the recruiter vs the rogue agents. Then you have the loads of variability from the shift packages. You can also play it with kids or non gamers using the training mode, play it solo using the app. Maybe you didn't feel like the game would hold up well enough if you played it constantly, or it just narrowly missed the cut.

    • @LinearConvolution
      @LinearConvolution 2 года назад +1

The two expansions I'd recommend are Prelude and Colonies. Prelude gives a bit more asymmetry to each player and speeds up the early game by giving each player some starting bonuses to their engine. Colonies adds a new mechanic where you can trade resources with some side boards. There is competition / timing for the best exchange rates; but the real benefit of this expansion is it gives players a way to convert resources (and especially use energy) so it adds options to the engine building. The other expansions are not as important in my opinion and may even bloat the experience, but "Hellas and Elysium" might be good if you're getting bored of the standard map and milestones/achievements in the base game. Hope this helps!
