If I was on a desert island I’d bring Frosthaven, because the top half of the box could be used as my shelter to live in and the bottom half could be used as a boat to sail back to civilization.
1. Castles of Burgundy (favorite) 2. Patchwork (wife’s favorite) 3. Wingspan (we both love) 4. Quacks of Quedlinburg (favorite welcoming game) 5. Ark Nova (favorite heavy/solo game) 6. Biblios (favorite card game) 7. The Crew: mission deep sea (favorite holiday game with family) 8. Deception: Murder in Hong Kong (favorite party game) 9. Nemesis (favorite event/horror game) 10. Tzolk’in: the Mayan calendar (other favorite heavy game)
Devin, you should pick Western Legends instead of a deck of cards! You could just you the action cards as your deck of 52 because they still have the suits on them.
Nice pull, very smart bending the rules there. Although I'd say Western Legends is much better with all the content, but the 2-1 aspect with the cards included could make that worth it.
I was so happy to see Vindication on the list. It was the only one of these that would overlap with me…esp I am not a fan of area control or abstract games. Makes me want to see if I can get Vindication played again very soon!
Go is amazing! You don't play it like chess, you need to train your intuition more than your calculation. It's the reason I like it more than chess. Great pick Devon!
Love these "restricted" top 10 lists! Budget/space/with or without certain content - love it all!!! Here's my base desert island Top 10 list (limited to games I have played) Quacks - Three Sisters - Star Realms 1 - Terraforming Mars 2 - Hansa Teutonica 3 - Under Falling Skies 4 - Saint Petersburg (2nd Edition) - with or without the homebrew variant(s) we normally play with 5 - Santorini 6 - Caverna 7 - Great Western Trail (2nd Edition) 8 - Star Realms: Frontiers (though I almost pick OG Star Realms - I like some of the OG cards, especially for the Machine Cult, more) 9 - Quacks of Quedlinburg 10 - Three Sisters Lemme know what y'all think?
You have to play a reality survival/ adventure game; if you arrive lonely island, you may look for food and water and construct tools and housings for hours and months
Devon's list - "If I could only learn 10 Board Games" (10 games I've never played but I'll bet they're better than every other game I've ever played) Also Scrabble. (Commented after 10, 9, and 8)
Sorry for anyone else who made this joke but isn't Robinson Crusoe the one choice? You will have a plan right there training you how to get off that island.
@@BoardGameCo I'm not kidding, I've won the first scenario, the wood pile, twice. Of course checking, double checking all the rules. Once was solo, but the other time was in a group of four people. No breaking of the spyglass promo needed. Right characters and some luck I'm sure. So make sure I'm on the island with you and we got this!
Interesting lists. I have played very few of those games. My list would be: 10. Hexplore It: The Forests of Adrimon (fantastic adventure crawl playable solo or with others) 9. Big Trouble in Little China: The Game (immerses you into the movie and develops into a fabulous story every time) 8. Lewis & Clark: The Expedition (a game with so many cards, such wonderful history, and good at many player counts) 7. Techno Bowl (the game with ALL of the American Football teams...or tongue-in-cheek knock offs, with wonderful replay) 6. Cosmic Encounter (my Mayfair edition) (comes with so many alien powers and the alternate homeworld locations) 5. Napoleon's Last Battles (this is a quadra game, with four different battles all in the box) separately 3. Merchant of Venus (my Avalon Hill re-vamped version) (so much replay with the random world setups, and playable up to 6 players) 2. Leaving Earth (the amount of different missions to attempt and areas to go to in a tense game of reaching for the stars with limited time) 1. Stonewall Jackson's Way 2: The Battles of Bull Run (a fantastic war game that not only has multiple different scenarios but also includes a second gamette in it that allows you to play the beginning battles of the American Civil War)
Right now it would be Frosthaven. Vindication is also definitely a solid choice. And I love Dune: Imperium. Looking forward to Oathsworn when it arrives.,,
I'm very theme based and rotate my game play by theme. But much like u, I was surprised how many of my favorite games would not make this list. So in no order and focused on base games only.... Clue, DEI, Fury of Dracula, Axis and Allies, Carcassonne, Dead of Winter, Zombicide: undead or alive, Vikings gone wild, Night parade of 100 yokai, Transmission....last 4 were hard to pick, and I have no doubt as more games enter my collection these will change as well. Neat list, thanks
Castles of Burgundy; played it >150 times and not bored yet + it's my partner's fav... My only concern would be not having a slightly heavier game, brass would be a close second, and mage knight if I was desert island alone scenario.
The lack of real player interaction limits it after a few dozen plays. There are optimal placements and paths to take and you know if you are going to win by turn 3 or 4. Also, the base game is a bit weak and you really need the first expansion to make it shine. If you want the same type of game but with actual player impact on each other, Lords of Waterdeep is better.
If I could only have one game, it would easily be Castles of Burgundy. This is not my #1 game; but it is my #2, and I've played it over 1,700 times without even beginning to tire of it. Technically, the only "expansion" content I use is more boards, and sometimes the "Monasteries" boards (which have one extra feature). I also like some of the additional tiles; but I seldom use them. But, even without any of that expansion content, this would be an easy choice. If I get to pick 10, though, and try to be a little more well-rounded, it would be something like the following (in no particular order). Please note: Terraforming Mars and Viticulture might be on this list, except I will not play TM without Prelude or Viticulture without Tuscany. So, I'm trying to stick by the "no expansions" rule: Gaia Project (my actual favorite game, which I've played 80+ times and will never get tired of) Castles of Burgundy Cosmic Encounter (even with just the original 50-or-so aliens). Tichu Crokinole Paperback if I have to have a party game, then Deception: Murder in Hong Kong Kingdomino: Origins Troyes Scythe Last note: I do adore Dune: Imperium (it's my #4 game of all time, and it may climb even higher)... but I honestly have no idea how it will hold up to 100s of plays without any expansion content. It might be perfect for that, but I just don't know.
@BoardGameCo Surprised to see that Castles of Burgundy didn't make your list. Specially the new Special Edition which has all the modules combined in the base box. :) My games would have a lot in common with both of you: Dune Imperium, Vindication, Blood Rage, Spirit Island, Dwellings of Eldervale, Castles of Burgundy: Special Edition, The Crew, No Thanks, Mind MGMT, The Search for Planet X
Devon, you should have included Doomtown Reloaded. Since each card in that game also doubles as a poker card, it would allow you to cheat and include all the card games while also including a game game XD
If I could only watch 10 RUclips channels ever, they'd be: 1. Dungeon Craft 2. Black Magic Craft 3. Seth Skorkowsky 4. Wyloch 5. Matt Colville 6. Watch it Played 7. Actualol 8. Board Game Garden 9. GMinfo 10. But First Coffee
My top 5: 1: Twilight Imperium (HOW this isn't in their list? ) 2: Chaos in the Old World 3: Terra Mystica 4: Dune 5: Lords of Waterdeep Honorable mention: Kemet Casual top 5 1: Pandemic 2: The Resistance 3: 7 Wonders 4: Shadow Hunters 5: Betrayal at House on the Hill. Honorable mention: Carcassonne Complete as a base game is the key here. For instance, with expansions, Battlestar Galactica jumps to #1 and (Advanced) Civilization (Avalon Hill) to #2 Many games really must have the expansion to make it worthwhile.
Mine ranked from lowest player count to highest (since no guarantees anyone else is stranded on the island with me!): Space Empires 4x 1P+ Robinson Crusoe 1P+ Brass Lancashire 2P+ Castles of Burgundy 2P Inis 2P+ Cyclades 2P+ Tigris & Euphrates 2P+ Twilight Struggle 2P Lords of Vegas 3P+ Imperial 3P+ Cosmic Encounter 4P+
Scrolling over my collection on BGG: In terms of a single game, I love Above & Below, Near & Far, and I own Sleeping Gods I haven't played it yet; but it has the most content, but I know I love the other two more so it's tough. I'll argue Agricola 15 should have come with the Farmers of the Moore ex, and the A-D decks instead of just A & B, which if included in a big box makes them modules now (?), that has a lot of replay ability. Ecos: First Continent has some variable setup and lots of cards in the base game. I haven't played it but once, but it seems like an option. Petrichor Collector's Edition. This comes with modules and expansion now in the base box so a slight cheat but idc. Robinson Crusoe Collector's Edition. The one that is coming out (and taking incredibly forever to get made btw). Like big boxes etc. will have all the content in the one box so a cheat, but thematic with lots of content for the island. Santorini. This doesn't need to be the new addition, the base game I have is enough. The amount of gods you get and insane replay-ability is great. Of course I plan to get the new gods, but don't need them. Tzolk'in. I've played with some of the expansion stuff, and while they are nice, the base game is enough. Solid game. Yedo: Deluxe Master Set. This had different cards and setups. Modules in the base box. Just a sweet game. Yokohama. I've played once, but it was neat and has different cards and set up options. This is 10 games if I take 2 of the Red Raven games. Some cheats taking big boxes that come with expansion content now in one box. Definitely different choices the more games I play. Really only looked at games I currently own. Neat stuff.
Devin, my number 10 is scrabble. Everyone watching thinking, um isn't this channel mainly about crowd funded board games? Devin, Oh, ok, I change my answer to a deck of cards... lol
Not in any order. Command and Colors ancients Brass Birmingham Food chain magnate Hannibal and Hamilcar Gaia project The war of the ring Gloomhaven- jaws of the lion Blood bowl (2020) rules Spirit island An 18xx (1862 or 18cz since I have them). All of those have great staying power offering loads of game and repeated plays reveals so much. No cult of the new here! Alien rpg - love your choice. Personally I would the one ring rpg. Love it and so middle earth.
Great lists, this is always a fun topic. My number 1 would be Dwellings of Eldervale. Spirit Island, Century: Spice Road, Mythic Mischief, and Feed the Kraken round out the top 5. This assumes I'd have enough players for Feed the Kraken, and I would try to fit all 3 Century games into one box (yes, that's cheating).
Happy but also nervous that TMB base was number one... I backed the recent campaign and I'm getting Undertow, Undertow expansion,Spice and Dice, Unbreakable and some charcters... I did not get the base, however.
Daughters heard cards and led to the discussion of, how many dice, pieces of paper and pencils would be allowed as one. Second when talking rpg, wish knew more about gloomhaven world one. If the depth of comes close to its boardgame version would put it on the list. Give me a bit on rest, playing through top twenty in next couple of months, got 8 games of dune imperium last two weeks. Plan on getting in some solo games with base and expansions, more than likely going to be their too
I limit my game collection to 50 games at all times. My 10 I would keep to give me wide variability would be: Dreadfleet Forbidden stars Abyss Fury of dracula Western legends Cthulu: death may die Terraforming mars Sheriff of Nottingham Chinatown Love letter
I would bring Fleet: The Dice Game because once I complete a game I can use the sheet as fire starter, but then the game is limited in the amount of times I could play it. I also agree on Dune: Imperium and Oathsworn, but I don’t currently own them, so I’d bring Arnak and JOTL since I own those. And then the rest of my Dice Throne seasons and Dice Throne Adventures.
i think i made a mistake ordering the original too many bones from the kickstarter of undertow; just because of how loooooong its taking to deliver something thats already made :(
Hmm... So here's my cheat/question: I would add Anachrony to my list, but I only got it in the Infinity Box, so for me, the Infinity Box is the "base game" even though it technically includes all the expansions. The same goes for the Vindication Archive of the Ancients box. So, can I include those on my list because that's the only way I got them? I mean, both would probably be on the list anyway, but I'd definitely want my full boxes.
Mage Knight - so much game in the base box. City of the Great Machine - so much variability in the base box Aeons End - ^^ burncycle Maximum Apocalypse Gaia Project Anachrony Origins: The First Builders Batman the Animated series - likely the best dice chucker Dead Reckoning i think with these 10 games you'd have a ton of game time just with the base games. i didnt choose: Spirit Island - the base game isnt enough. imo the game need Branch and Claw Too Many Bones - base game only i think is missing something Cloudspire - my #1 game, i dont think solo would stand the test of time and it doesnt get played enough multiplayer In Too Deep - a top 10 for me, just doesnt get played enough requiring 3 players Tidal Blades - just doesnt get played enough due to player count where it shines
I know I'm cheating here, but if there is only ONE game then it has to be Kingdom Death Monsters :D Even if I don't play the game anymore, I can still have thousands of hours, if not more, of fun painting miniatures!
New subscriber here, and I'm pleasantly surprised to see Machina Arcana on your list, a game that I consider one of the best in its genre but also extremely underrated. It's ironic to see that many players have sold their copies because they only saw it as a dice machine, when in fact it's probably one of the most subtle in managing its movements, energy, equipment, and progression. But thanks to this lack of recognition and knowledge of its mechanisms, I was able to buy the full version with both extensions for a fraction of the price 😛☺ PS: English is not my native language, and I have a bit of difficulty following your speech as you have a phenomenal speaking speed, but fortunately, I have the subtitles (in English), which is perfect for improving. 🙂👍
Alex has 11 games, when the list calls for 10. We are shocked, SHOCKED I say. I also am not in love with the no expansions rule here, especially if I can fit it in the base game box. I’d go: Brass Birmingham Ra Dwellings of Eldarvale El Grande Anno 1800 Renature Bus Eclipse Castles of Burgundy Cat in the Box Maybe 5 of these don’t make it if I chose again tomorrow because I love all my games. Well a large percentage of them.
I'd pick Final Girl... oh wait, only the base game box... that has no scenarios in it. Crap. :P This is a hard list without expansions, since many games the expansions have become the base game. Crokinole, Dwellings of Eldervale LE, Mind Mgmt CE, The Quest for El Dorado, Clash of Cultures ME, Wayfarers of the South Tigris, Planet Unknown, Awkward Guests, The Search for Planet X, Paperback. That's not enough games. Can we do ten more? And are phone apps working here? Some of these require that.
I don't think DEI will stand up to extended play that well. It's a good game but...yeah...I don't think it's amazing as Alex does. In a lot of ways it's like Scythe and I rather imagine that after people have more time with it similar gripes will arise...
How are you having campaign games on this list? Any campaign ends - and is 130 scenarios supposed to be a lot? That's not even 3 years if you only play once a week. So now you only have 9 games when you could have 10!
@@BoardGameCo Because half of the fun of a campaign game is unlocking the discovery stuff and following the story. If I already know all those bits, if becomes a much less enjoyable experience the second time. I loved playing through the entire Gloomhaven campaign, but I wouldn't do it again.
If I was on a desert island I’d bring Frosthaven, because the top half of the box could be used as my shelter to live in and the bottom half could be used as a boat to sail back to civilization.
False. The bottom half could be used to house an entire civilization 😂

Thanks for getting my Alexa to turn on my lights right at the beginning there. I guess it was a little dark in here.
lol you're welcome :)
TMB would be my #1 as well. It is timeless, physically and gameplay wise
It's soo good :)
I've never played Too Many Bones, but seeing it as your nr1 gives me good vibes about my all in pledge for Betrayal of the Second Era.
Go is amazing! You don't play it like chess, you need to train your intuition more than your calculation. It's the reason I like it more than chess.
Great pick Devon!
I too love alien RPG, I'm with you Devin. If you guys ever get time I'd love to be the 4th player with you all!
With the two Crokinole boards and the box covers from Frosthaven, Oathswarn, and Star Wars you could build a raft with sails! ;)
And ruin the crokinole boards? Never. Now go on the other hand...

Surprised to see that Castles of Burgundy didn't make your list. Specially the new Special Edition which has all the modules combined in the base box. :)

It's incredible, not sure it would be top 10 if I could only have 10
Wait. No Cthulhu DMD? I‘m literally shocked!
same

What were the abstract games y’all were talking about when discussing GO?
Tzaar and a couple others. They’re part of a line of games
Yep :)
Rebellion on that list, that's good taste.
Huzzah!

I'm waiting for Alien RPG starter set to arrive tomorrow from BoardGame Bliss. Devon's list is certainly not helping to keep me chill while I wait ;-)
My top 5: 1: Twilight Imperium (HOW this isn't in their list? ) 2: Chaos in the Old World 3: Terra Mystica 4: Dune 5: Lords of Waterdeep Honorable mention: Kemet
Casual top 5 1: Pandemic 2: The Resistance 3: 7 Wonders 4: Shadow Hunters 5: Betrayal at House on the Hill. Honorable mention: Carcassonne
Complete as a base game is the key here. For instance, with expansions, Battlestar Galactica jumps to #1 and (Advanced) Civilization (Avalon Hill) to #2 Many games really must have the expansion to make it worthwhile.

Cosmic has soooo much gameplay
Not in any order.
Command and Colors ancients
Brass Birmingham
Food chain magnate
Hannibal and Hamilcar
Gaia project
The war of the ring

That's correct :)
Will we have a 12x12 review for D.E.I.?
Hoping to know what you think of it in the long run!
My top desert Island game: Guards Of Atlantis II
Oh man, I need to play it more
Hello. May i ask please? DEI: Divide Et Impera looks amazing! Its fully playable for two players? I mean pure 2p gameplay :) Many thanks for answer

Happy but also nervous that TMB base was number one... I backed the recent campaign and I'm getting Undertow, Undertow expansion,Spice and Dice, Unbreakable and some charcters... I did not get the base, however.
Na you're fine. I just picked base because that gives 4 characters vs any of the others for the purpose of this video
My 10 I would keep to give me wide variability would be:
Dreadfleet
Forbidden stars
Abyss
Fury of dracula
Western legends
Cthulu: death may die
Terraforming mars
Sheriff of Nottingham
Chinatown
Love letter
I would so be the 4th person because I really want to try the alien RPG!
Give Devon a shout :) I'm in :)
Magic Realm, with that amount of time you may fianlly be able to understand the rules.
Now I need the add on gearloc Pickles. Make it happen CTG.
Pickles!!!
Sure!
Arnak is fantastic :)
i think i made a mistake ordering the original too many bones from the kickstarter of undertow; just because of how loooooong its taking to deliver something thats already made :(
Ya...sorry about that :(
For Alien Rpg you culd ask Jasse, he is intrested in Rpgs
Ty for this video!
Based on the updates for Primal, it is going to have heavy story. Even though during the campaign they basically had nothing.
City of the Great Machine - so much variability in the base box
Aeons End - ^^
burncycle
Maximum Apocalypse
Gaia Project
Anachrony
Origins: The First Builders
Batman the Animated series - likely the best dice chucker
Dead Reckoning
i think with these 10 games you'd have a ton of game time just with the base games. i didnt choose:
Spirit Island - the base game isnt enough. imo the game need Branch and Claw
Too Many Bones - base game only i think is missing something
Cloudspire - my #1 game, i dont think solo would stand the test of time and it doesnt get played enough multiplayer
In Too Deep - a top 10 for me, just doesnt get played enough requiring 3 players
Tidal Blades - just doesnt get played enough due to player count where it shines
Totally willing to be the fourth for aliens rpg.
I also distract my kids with the miniatures...some of them are no longer in pristine condition...
lol
I know I'm cheating here, but if there is only ONE game then it has to be Kingdom Death Monsters :D
Even if I don't play the game anymore, I can still have thousands of hours, if not more, of fun painting miniatures!
Interesting list!!
:)
But thanks to this lack of recognition and knowledge of its mechanisms, I was able to buy the full version with both extensions for a fraction of the price 😛☺
PS: English is not my native language, and I have a bit of difficulty following your speech as you have a phenomenal speaking speed, but fortunately, I have the subtitles (in English), which is perfect for improving. 🙂👍
I saw primal and it looked interesting. It reminded me of the monster hunter video games, but I don’t really know anything about it.
Alex has 11 games, when the list calls for 10. We are shocked, SHOCKED I say. I also am not in love with the no expansions rule here, especially if I can fit it in the base game box. I’d go:
Brass Birmingham
Ra
Dwellings of Eldarvale
El Grande
Anno 1800
Renature
Bus
Eclipse
Castles of Burgundy
Cat in the Box
Maybe 5 of these don’t make it if I chose again tomorrow because I love all my games. Well a large percentage of them.
My first list I included expansions...I got reasonable push back on that :)
Three overlaps for me. Vindication, Dwellings of Eldervale, and Dune Imperium.
A deck of cards. Actually I'd have to have a few decks because there are some good games that need more than one deck.
I’d have Vindication number one!
I barely disagree:)
Holy hell, go away please....😂
Surprised neither of you picked War Chest.
I like it...but not majorly my jam
I'd pick Final Girl... oh wait, only the base game box... that has no scenarios in it. Crap. :P
This is a hard list without expansions, since many games the expansions have become the base game.
I volunteer as a tributary fourth! lol
Bring a 30, 60 hours game
I don't think DEI will stand up to extended play that well. It's a good game but...yeah...I don't think it's amazing as Alex does. In a lot of ways it's like Scythe and I rather imagine that after people have more time with it similar gripes will arise...
Should be a warning not to watch this video near the viewer's Alexa. She let me know I don't have a device called "spotlight" lol.
lol fair :)
Devon ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Try 3
Sure?
Go away please 😂😂😂
lol
"My number eight is Go..." "....away please" 😆😆😆
How are you having campaign games on this list? Any campaign ends - and is 130 scenarios supposed to be a lot? That's not even 3 years if you only play once a week. So now you only have 9 games when you could have 10!
Why can't you replay a campaign the same way you replay a game?
@@BoardGameCo Because half of the fun of a campaign game is unlocking the discovery stuff and following the story. If I already know all those bits, if becomes a much less enjoyable experience the second time. I loved playing through the entire Gloomhaven campaign, but I wouldn't do it again.
Just here to give thumb down for LMS
For putting the generic abomination that scrabble on a list this gets a dislike.
Ok....
