I believe it's called Too Many Bones because that's how much I've spent on it and also how many my wife is going to break when she finds out. The game is addicting and you want every expansion and every character.
Which is a perfect example of the "Three prices you pay" rule. The first price is what you actually paid for something. The second is the price you tell your S.O. what you paid for said item. The third is the price you pay when your S.O. finds out what you actually paid for said item.
Picked up this game specifically from this review, never heard of it until then. Now, 1 month in and I can't get enough of it, I have almost all the expansion pieces, and am super bummed that the health chips and dice tray are out of stock! Awesome game for solo or co-op, a must buy that doesn't get enough coverage. It's pricey but worth every penny if you like RPG and skill tree games.

I "treated" myself to it a while back, and eventually the load of rules and lack of replay kind of ended the journey for me. I don't regret the experience. But good Lord, instead of fancy components, give me a lower price point and a better rule book. If undertow was around when I purchased the core game, that truly would've been the best decision.

Never thought I'd say this, but is seems like this would have been better as a collectable game; buy the gearlocks you want, collect individual encounters, perhaps even (gasp) random loot, skills and bad guys-containing boosters. All in sensibly-priced high quality cardboard of course.

It's drives up the cost so much!" I'm sure there's a balance somewhere. Are there certain components that should be improved on more than others?
There's definitely a balance there - and not a strict binary. I mean, heck, games could come life size, with their own inflatable game rooms, delivered to your door with a cadre of butlers trained to set up the game and teach you how to play, if cost were no object. I feel (at least on kickstarter) designers are losing ground to marketers when it comes to crafting game components. Different components types are better for different things than others. Wood is not better than cardboard in every circumstance, plastic is not always better than wood, etc. etc.. Each has their function. Optics, tactility, feasibility, all of these things should be considered before you simply 3D model the next wave of components. Good graphical design and a solid sense of practicality goes a long way in making high quality components. For e.g. Brass Birmingham: non-deluxe game cost me 55 CAD. The game is starkly beautiful, mechanically near-perfect, and graphical/practical design? So, so good. The cardboard coins (while I'm sure some enjoy the deluxified poker chips more) are high quality, visually distinct, and come in different sizes to make stacking and counting them effortless and so satisfying. I have no qualms about saying that Brass Birmingham is one of the most beautiful games I own. And it came at the price of the nations dice game. That's quality component design!
I think its not just that the pieces are higher quality but that they are expensive in ways that don't make sense. Why plastic cards instead of high quality linen textured cards like other premium games have? Why poker chips instead of cards, which would be cheaper and more readable, or figures which would make the cost more justifiable? Exactly who is asking for neoprene player boards and plastic reference sheets?
The middle ground is Gloomhaven. The price is so high because of the sheer amount of stuff you get in the box. The components are exactly as sturdy as they need to be.
Even Kingdom Dork has no plastic cards, no specially printed card boxes for cards, or plastic boxes for individual tokens. And that games's 400 a pop! There definitely is a balance, and this level of indestructibleness isn't it, in my opinion.

The quality of this game puts it in the category of “finer things”. You got it right when you said that the game is something you’d get to treat yourself or someone else.
The price point is a valid argument but I’m personally glad that CTG choose high quality components. I’m quite the maniac when it comes to game components spending extra money pimping boxes with foam core or wood inserts, sleeving my cards, etc... With a CTG game, I don’t need to do/buy anything more. Plastic cards don’t need sleeve. The box layout is optimized to bring everything on the table ASAP. As for chips and neoprene mat, tactile experience is an important aspect of a board game to me.
This review was hilarious and probably my favorite one so far. And I just want to say that I appreciate how you guys always leave the negative comments for the end, because I get so excited and I'm about to jump on the internet and order it and I already have excuses sprinting through my head to tell my wife about why I needed another $130 dollar game even though I play warhammer and video games and why she doesn't need to kick me out cuz I can just sell our car or a kid and then you guys tell me why I should hold off.... One thing that I can’t help but feel is that Chip Theory should keep the quality of the game as is, but simply cut back on some of the unnecessary packaging. They could really make the expansion boxes much smaller without changing the actual components

I like high quality games and I like many things about Too Many Bones. I like the neoprene mats, I like the dice, I like the idea of customizing your character with dice rolls and dice placement, and so on... But there are two things i absolutley don't like: - the whole poker chips thing. I mean, a stack of poker chips is no enemy or character in my eyes. - the "gameboard". A 4x4 tic tac toe field? Really? This is the best idea they came up with. I mean it is such a innovative game. But these two choices seem so bad to me. If they would have given the game a nice looking fantasy themed gameboard and some nice miniatures as characters and enemies I would instantly go All-In. But for me, this two points are enough to not even think about paying this much for Too Many Bones.
"If we can get Boomer knocked unconscious, we can send her bursting back to life! With drugs! Allowing her to detonate an owlbear before it took flight." That may be my favorite description of a turn in a board game of all time. HOW AM I ONLY KNOW FINDING OUT ABOUT THIS DELICIOUSLY INSANE GAME?!
Honestly the Mouse Pads look super luxury but should probably be an optional addon like plastic tokens and 3D doors for Zombicide to replace the cardboard pieces. Something to bling out your game if you love it that much. Same with the rest of the wildly overproduced components in this game. It just raises the cost to a game that I'm sure is fun, but not worth the price of entry for most people on a budget. You would basically have to know you love it and want to go balls deep on addons right out of the gate. Perfect comparison: Spirit Island is super fantastic amazing (please review it) and has the quality components where it counts and finds more economical solutions elsewhere. You can buy a Mousepad style gameboard if you want. Its pricey, BUT its optional.

I watch all of your videos. some i watch multiple times to decide if i wanna buy the game or not. in fact, because of you guys, i bought Xia legends of a drift system for THREE HUNDRED BUCKS but it's totally worth it and it will get here in 2 days :)... i'm ordering this one too... 100% as soon as this video is over i'm buying it. also, please do us all a solid favor. no matter how good the game is, don't review discontinued or out of print games so we don't have to sell half our house just to buy it lol. I took the plunge on a full pledge in the initial kickstarter or TMB and boy am I happy that I did. This game pretty much has a lifetime guarantee on it's components, customer service is beyond exceptional for these things. Have a die with a crack in it? Just let them know. There is mention of replayablity being an issue here. I suppose this is possible, but I haven't felt this way. Mind you I'm not a completionist, either. The one thing that does get a little annoying is the same 3 starting encounters that come in the base box, those can be changed out with the 40 Days expansion. If you like RPGs, dice games, Gloomhaven-lite like games, and have the money to spend on this beauty you will love it. Also, if your game group buys games together this is an awesome choice as well! Base game should always be available on the website, don't go looking on ebay.
I want to pile on here to be excited by Malazan AND Goblin Emperor AND Grace of Kings AND just generally I had to pause and check. Goooooooood boooooooks.

So glad you guys covered this one - we discovered it at Gen Con last year and it has been the most compelling gaming experience in a while. Despite the $$. Also, late pledges to Kickstarters are a great way to pick it up and save on shipping, but still - $$.
This game is so much fun! Playing a character again and again is an exploration. And then, trying a new character is also wonderful new discovery. The price is steep, but I really enjoy it!
Literally just ordered this game today. I think the review was very fair and I don't regret the purchase at all. Definitely something my wife and I are treating ourselves to, where we got the Core game and Undertow expansion which should give quite a bit of content especially with 6 characters to play. Very expensive yes, but I think we are going to get a lot of mileage out of it since we both love RPGs but when only two of us are playing, hard to do GM + Single player, this way we can work together and go on an adventure.
Southfloridelphia It doesn’t come with 5 of them, it doesn’t stitch the edges, it’s neoprene is much thinner, and it doesn’t have cutouts. Nor does it use casino quality poker chips throughout and its cards are pretty darn flimsy. Onitama is a great game, and for its cost I think the production quality is great. But let’s not compare what is basically a bundled playmat to the “overproduced nightmare” that is TMB. If what you are saying is that other games offer neoprene mats, then I agree with you, some games do and it isn’t rare in the abstract category. It’s also offered as an option in nearly any semi popular card game and there seems to be enough who want it for there to be a market for that. Thicker rubber and stitched edges seem to be popular add one too. I don’t think the reviewers are have time to really play any board game out, so what do they care about component quality that is probably designed to outlive a person.

I feel like TMB delivered value for money in that it was the family's favorite cooperative board game for several months (having finished Pandemic Legacy). It will still come out occasionally, but it is not good for casual sessions with friends who don't have time or inclination for multiple play-throughs. Undertow is a great addition to the series, maintaining the theme and storyline and tweaking the combat just enough to make it feel fresh. The ridiculous quality of the components may be a feature of blowing through so many stretch goals - as discussed in the Batman review. Good to know the resale value is so high.

I find myself lately drawn to premium game components. Recently spent $100 on custom components for Eldritch Horror on Etsy. At the same time, maybe the publisher might want to consider this a "deluxe" version and maybe offer something with a lower price point?
This was great. I've been on the fence about it. It looks great. The components are nigh indestructible. And the flaws and the price point are a bit off putting but...gahdayum. The statement "This is a game you buy to treat yourself" was the clincher. I love all your videos and thanks for all your work.
I bought Too Many Bones to play solo. And what a massive disappointment it was. I'm still looking to unload it. The encounter cards for the solo game number (from memory) 10, so replayability isn't really there. But the biggest trouble is that all the rules, dice, gadgets, etc are just to set up a fight on a 6 by 4, totally featureless, board. I did not like this at all. Imagine playing noughts and crosses (tic tac toe?) with 200 rules and you've got it.
This game is actually not complicated at all once you get the hang of it. But the game is much more balanced with 4 Gearlocs, if you only attempted to play with one then I feel sorry for you.

yes, exactly what I feel about it. Every KS campaign I am so close to get this, but every KS campaign the price to get everything - or anything - gets more ridicoulous, I would so love to have a version of this game with just the cool dice and everything else is cardboard. But then again, would it really still be the same? And then again, doesn't that mean the components are just bait? Too Many Questions...

A bit of Scorcese (well Hitchcock should be mentioned I guess, but come on, that Scorcese's Dolly Zoom was wonderful, and better than Spielberg's one, oh Lord, a shark!), a few drops of milk and water, and some tea leaves in a beautifully too expensive piece of plastic later, I think that's probably one of your best reviews so far!
I do feel this game is not for everyone. It is expensive and is complicated for new gamers or those who have never tried RPGs. But if you have money and into big games, I could not recommend it enough. It has become by far my favorite game even next to Gloomhaven (which I do also love). I absolutely love the mechanics and premium components. I often get a bit annoyed at these $80-100+ games that are nothing but cardboard, I would rather pay an extra 20-30 dollars and get something durable. I know some will complain about the expense but when you buy games from Chip Theory you honestly feel like you got something not just well made, but really thought out. I have found the game to be endlessly replayable. Even after owning it for as long as I have, I have not played through all the encounter cards. With the new Splice and Dice addition, you will have endless new Tyrants to face, which I am really looking forward too! If you are going to Gen Con, definitely go check them out! Then you will not have to worry about adding additional cost due to shipping and you can give it a try while you are there!
While that's absolutely true, Riot games is like a billion dollar company who admits to taking a colossal loss on MvM. Chip Theory is a very small publishing house who will never be able to do something like that and stay in business.
In retrospect, a great review that hits the nail on the head. While TMB is a rather great game, it's downright fetishistic when it comes to its components, and it wants you to pay through your nose to get to enjoy them. As much as TMB fans don't want to admit it, this game primarily wants be touched it and to keep being touched. Each component has its own texture and feel and weight and way of handling and is not nearly as interested in looking good or being useful as much as it is obsessed with how it feels when being run through players' fingers. Quinns didn't even mention that the luxury package that the game represents has its own luxury upgrades in the form of even fancier chips and a neoprene playmat which servers for nothing else but to count days via moving around a glass chip over a dotted line! Now while I am very happy that Chip Games found their little niche of people who equally enjoy playing games and fondling them lovingly (and are not above paying premium price to get this), I still cannot rationalize giving a ridicilous amount of money for something which - let's be honest - could not only have been produced cheaper, but could have looked much nicer in the process, especially concerning the battlemat and the monsters which could not be more abstract if they tried. Literally all battles are played on the very same dull 4 x 4 square grid which basically looks like an early prototype, something to play around with in the early stages of game design until it gets properly developed and implemented. The cards are plastic and waterproof, sure, but they also look muddy and are incredibly hard to read. In all honesty, this feels like an incredibly deluxified edition of a very cheap game, where the company decided to give it as much flair as they could while keeping true to the spirit of the hypothetical original, dirt cheap edition. And this kinda bugs me - I understand that owning this game is a special type of treat, but I still don't think that the physical enjoyment of stacking poker chips, rolling dice and sticking them in neoprene mats compensates for a ridiculously high price and a gameplay experience which, while in certain parts really excellent, in others leaves a lot to be desired. If I'm giving this much money for what is in many aspects a very abstract skirmish game of moving poker chips around an extremely constrained and uninspired board, at least try to make the components communicate the fact that I'm a small creature fighting a huge dragon, and not as if I'm playtesting an early alpha version of that game using DIY components I just hastily scrounged up by ramsacking my dad's desk drawers.

The middle ground is Gloomhaven. The price is so high because of the sheer amount of stuff you get in the box. The components are exactly as sturdy as they need to be.
Even Kingdom Dork has no plastic cards, no specially printed card boxes for cards, or plastic boxes for individual tokens. And that games's 400 a pop!
There definitely is a balance, and this level of indestructibleness isn't it, in my opinion.

The price point is a valid argument but I’m personally glad that CTG choose high quality components. I’m quite the maniac when it comes to game components spending extra money pimping boxes with foam core or wood inserts, sleeving my cards, etc... With a CTG game, I don’t need to do/buy anything more. Plastic cards don’t need sleeve. The box layout is optimized to bring everything on the table ASAP. As for chips and neoprene mat, tactile experience is an important aspect of a board game to me.
This review was hilarious and probably my favorite one so far. And I just want to say that I appreciate how you guys always leave the negative comments for the end, because I get so excited and I'm about to jump on the internet and order it and I already have excuses sprinting through my head to tell my wife about why I needed another $130 dollar game even though I play warhammer and video games and why she doesn't need to kick me out cuz I can just sell our car or a kid and then you guys tell me why I should hold off.... And I can take a deep breath. I really should stop watching these videos...

One thing that I can’t help but feel is that Chip Theory should keep the quality of the game as is, but simply cut back on some of the unnecessary packaging. They could really make the expansion boxes much smaller without changing the actual components

My mom got this for me, and I can confirm it does indeed make a lovely birthday present!
I like high quality games and I like many things about Too Many Bones. I like the neoprene mats, I like the dice, I like the idea of customizing your character with dice rolls and dice placement, and so on...
But there are two things i absolutley don't like:
- the whole poker chips thing. I mean, a stack of poker chips is no enemy or character in my eyes.
- the "gameboard". A 4x4 tic tac toe field? Really? This is the best idea they came up with.
I mean it is such a innovative game. But these two choices seem so bad to me. If they would have given the game a nice looking fantasy themed gameboard and some nice miniatures as characters and enemies I would instantly go All-In.
But for me, this two points are enough to not even think about paying this much for Too Many Bones.

Honestly the Mouse Pads look super luxury but should probably be an optional addon like plastic tokens and 3D doors for Zombicide to replace the cardboard pieces.
Something to bling out your game if you love it that much. Same with the rest of the wildly overproduced components in this game.
It just raises the cost to a game that I'm sure is fun, but not worth the price of entry for most people on a budget. You would basically have to know you love it and want to go balls deep on addons right out of the gate.
Perfect comparison: Spirit Island is super fantastic amazing (please review it) and has the quality components where it counts and finds more economical solutions elsewhere. You can buy a Mousepad style gameboard if you want. Its pricey, BUT its optional.

I watch all of your videos. some i watch multiple times to decide if i wanna buy the game or not. in fact, because of you guys, i bought Xia legends of a drift system for THREE HUNDRED BUCKS but it's totally worth it and it will get here in 2 days :)... i'm ordering this one too... 100% as soon as this video is over i'm buying it. also, please do us all a solid favor. no matter how good the game is, don't review discontinued or out of print games so we don't have to sell half our house just to buy it lol. I took the plunge on a full pledge in the initial kickstarter or TMB and boy am I happy that I did. This game pretty much has a lifetime guarantee on it's components, customer service is beyond exceptional for these things. Have a die with a crack in it? Just let them know. There is mention of replayablity being an issue here. I suppose this is possible, but I haven't felt this way. Mind you I'm not a completionist, either. The one thing that does get a little annoying is the same 3 starting encounters that come in the base box, those can be changed out with the 40 Days expansion.
If you like RPGs, dice games, Gloomhaven-lite like games, and have the money to spend on this beauty you will love it. Also, if your game group buys games together this is an awesome choice as well! Base game should always be available on the website, don't go looking on ebay.

This game is so much fun! Playing a character again and again is an exploration. And then, trying a new character is also wonderful new discovery. The price is steep, but I really enjoy it!
Literally just ordered this game today. I think the review was very fair and I don't regret the purchase at all. Definitely something my wife and I are treating ourselves to, where we got the Core game and Undertow expansion which should give quite a bit of content especially with 6 characters to play. Very expensive yes, but I think we are going to get a lot of mileage out of it since we both love RPGs but when only two of us are playing, hard to do GM + Single player, this way we can work together and go on an adventure.
wife and I have spent hours upon hour playing this. such an excellent co-op! no regrets at all :)

Onitama has a neoprene mat and it is under $20 USD street.
Southfloridelphia It doesn’t come with 5 of them, it doesn’t stitch the edges, it’s neoprene is much thinner, and it doesn’t have cutouts. Nor does it use casino quality poker chips throughout and its cards are pretty darn flimsy.
Onitama is a great game, and for its cost I think the production quality is great. But let’s not compare what is basically a bundled playmat to the “overproduced nightmare” that is TMB.
If what you are saying is that other games offer neoprene mats, then I agree with you, some games do and it isn’t rare in the abstract category. It’s also offered as an option in nearly any semi popular card game and there seems to be enough who want it for there to be a market for that. Thicker rubber and stitched edges seem to be popular add one too.
I don’t think the reviewers are have time to really play any board game out, so what do they care about component quality that is probably designed to outlive a person.
@@tychay Quinns says this is the first time they have seen neoprene mouse pads as a component. I was making the point that this is not the first game to have this component. Plus the inclusion of one does not automatically have to mean that the game is a crazy over-produced behemoth such as this.

Omg. That “brief aside” zoom out shot. I was first thinking, “hey, this video is next level.” Then I was laughing. 5 out of 5.
I feel like TMB delivered value for money in that it was the family's favorite cooperative board game for several months (having finished Pandemic Legacy). It will still come out occasionally, but it is not good for casual sessions with friends who don't have time or inclination for multiple play-throughs. Undertow is a great addition to the series, maintaining the theme and storyline and tweaking the combat just enough to make it feel fresh. The ridiculous quality of the components may be a feature of blowing through so many stretch goals - as discussed in the Batman review. Good to know the resale value is so high.

I find myself lately drawn to premium game components. Recently spent $100 on custom components for Eldritch Horror on Etsy. At the same time, maybe the publisher might want to consider this a "deluxe" version and maybe offer something with a lower price point?
This was great. I've been on the fence about it. It looks great. The components are nigh indestructible. And the flaws and the price point are a bit off putting but...gahdayum. The statement "This is a game you buy to treat yourself" was the clincher. I love all your videos and thanks for all your work.

Frankly, it's been too long.
I bought Too Many Bones to play solo.
And what a massive disappointment it was. I'm still looking to unload it. The encounter cards for the solo game number (from memory) 10, so replayability isn't really there.
But the biggest trouble is that all the rules, dice, gadgets, etc are just to set up a fight on a 6 by 4, totally featureless, board. I did not like this at all. Imagine playing noughts and crosses (tic tac toe?) with 200 rules and you've got it.
This game is actually not complicated at all once you get the hang of it. But the game is much more balanced with 4 Gearlocs, if you only attempted to play with one then I feel sorry for you.

yes, exactly what I feel about it. Every KS campaign I am so close to get this, but every KS campaign the price to get everything - or anything - gets more ridicoulous, I would so love to have a version of this game with just the cool dice and everything else is cardboard. But then again, would it really still be the same? And then again, doesn't that mean the components are just bait? Too Many Questions...

This game is one of the most fantastic board game I've ever played, and I will never be able to buy it. Such a shame.
I do feel this game is not for everyone. It is expensive and is complicated for new gamers or those who have never tried RPGs.
But if you have money and into big games, I could not recommend it enough. It has become by far my favorite game even next to Gloomhaven (which I do also love).
I absolutely love the mechanics and premium components. I often get a bit annoyed at these $80-100+ games that are nothing but cardboard, I would rather pay an extra 20-30 dollars and get something durable.
I know some will complain about the expense but when you buy games from Chip Theory you honestly feel like you got something not just well made, but really thought out. I have found the game to be endlessly replayable. Even after owning it for as long as I have, I have not played through all the encounter cards. With the new Splice and Dice addition, you will have endless new Tyrants to face, which I am really looking forward too!
If you are going to Gen Con, definitely go check them out! Then you will not have to worry about adding additional cost due to shipping and you can give it a try while you are there!

While that's absolutely true, Riot games is like a billion dollar company who admits to taking a colossal loss on MvM. Chip Theory is a very small publishing house who will never be able to do something like that and stay in business.
In retrospect, a great review that hits the nail on the head. While TMB is a rather great game, it's downright fetishistic when it comes to its components, and it wants you to pay through your nose to get to enjoy them. As much as TMB fans don't want to admit it, this game primarily wants be touched it and to keep being touched. Each component has its own texture and feel and weight and way of handling and is not nearly as interested in looking good or being useful as much as it is obsessed with how it feels when being run through players' fingers. Quinns didn't even mention that the luxury package that the game represents has its own luxury upgrades in the form of even fancier chips and a neoprene playmat which servers for nothing else but to count days via moving around a glass chip over a dotted line!
Now while I am very happy that Chip Games found their little niche of people who equally enjoy playing games and fondling them lovingly (and are not above paying premium price to get this), I still cannot rationalize giving a ridicilous amount of money for something which - let's be honest - could not only have been produced cheaper, but could have looked much nicer in the process, especially concerning the battlemat and the monsters which could not be more abstract if they tried. Literally all battles are played on the very same dull 4 x 4 square grid which basically looks like an early prototype, something to play around with in the early stages of game design until it gets properly developed and implemented. The cards are plastic and waterproof, sure, but they also look muddy and are incredibly hard to read. In all honesty, this feels like an incredibly deluxified edition of a very cheap game, where the company decided to give it as much flair as they could while keeping true to the spirit of the hypothetical original, dirt cheap edition. And this kinda bugs me - I understand that owning this game is a special type of treat, but I still don't think that the physical enjoyment of stacking poker chips, rolling dice and sticking them in neoprene mats compensates for a ridiculously high price and a gameplay experience which, while in certain parts really excellent, in others leaves a lot to be desired. If I'm giving this much money for what is in many aspects a very abstract skirmish game of moving poker chips around an extremely constrained and uninspired board, at least try to make the components communicate the fact that I'm a small creature fighting a huge dragon, and not as if I'm playtesting an early alpha version of that game using DIY components I just hastily scrounged up by ramsacking my dad's desk drawers.
