    I can only *try* to imagine the frustration you must have felt when it was actually re-released after five long years, years you were waiting to finally review and quite possibly even recommend it, just for the price to be raised ridiculously high in a flat out ironic play on the games theme. The original version has resin ships as well, but with a matte, almost dusty surface, which makes them seem weathered. The containers themselves are wooden blocks. The art direction for the original version is pretty solid.

    • @ropearoni4

      I was going to also say no wooden boats were in this game. Perhaps, you are speaking of Manila, another of Delonge's (rip) designs.

  • @lazulin
    @lazulin 6 лет назад +76

    Oh my goodness - I did not see that price coming! With that sort of pricing, the art/components are inexcusable. There are such beautiful games at this price range that this is impossible to justify. How can the stunning Lisboa, with its pricy components, be much cheaper than this game? Not to mention Scythe, or Rising Sun, which are both far cheaper despite detailed miniatures. I am sure the game is fantastic, but I am not sure how good it'd have to be to justify that sort of price tag. After all, the poor artwork with the dry theme pretty much guarantees that it'll be near-impossible to get to the table... which does not bode well for making the investment worthwhile.

    • @kidkunjer
      @kidkunjer 6 лет назад +8

      that price-tag is round the bend insane. It has the pricetag of an overblown complex kickstarter game, but without the rule complexity or miniatures... and when its a game aimed at people interested in getting good deals... ironic.

    I'm glad you talked about the artwork for this game because I was looking at it and thinking how ugly it was, that someone just got random assets and used Photoshop to put them together. For a $90 game that's just unacceptable! When I could buy a heavy miniature game for the same price and have nice pieces to look at, I'd chose that any day. Though I would like to play this game once, maybe I can convince my local board game store to get a demo copy.

      Lytane Variety Show. So you prefer a pretty game to a good game?

    • @Shenaldrac
      @Shenaldrac 6 лет назад +3

      Ugh, I know! There's so many games that are fun to play, with well thought out, deep mechanics that lead to incredible play sessions... but their art isn't the Mona Lisa of board gaming! Why can't someone make a boardgame that's just a ball of chrome for gamers like you and me, Lytane, those of us who don't care about fun but rather how pretty a thing is? Woe is us, woe is us!
      Sarcasm and mockery aside, this has always been one of my big gripes about SUASD; they always give a game shit for having """bad art""". Heck, they did it in their last review too. Apparently a game about trading and acquiring spices has bad art because its cards have pictures of... growing and buying spices. Wut. As long as it's clear what everything is, it shouldn't matter how much some artist pretties it up. These are *games*, not art museum pieces.
      And I'm not saying a game can't be visually attractive. I'm just saying I don't think a game deserves to get slammed for using dull, muted tones, it deserves to get slammed for having dull, boring gameplay.

    • @matisan8407
      @matisan8407 6 лет назад +9

      Exactly. And there are allowances for price. If the same game was $50 it would hardly be worth a mention, but when you hit a certain price-point you simply have to compare all aspects, including art and components. It absolutely is part of the discussion when the publisher decides to make big chunky plastic bits that cost a lot and then skimp pretty hard on the look of the rest of the game!

    • @Shenaldrac
      @Shenaldrac 6 лет назад +2

      I suppose the reason I was so harsh and, well... rude, to be frank, is because to me the game looks fine. The only thing shown in the review that looked awful were the cards showing how much each player's earning for crates of different colors; those look like garbage. But Matt brought up the player board saying how it looks awful, that the theme is lacking, and I just was really confounded. It's a game about manufacturing goods, storing the shipping containers in warehouses, and then shipping them. The player board shows a dockyard, with docks, those biiig loading cranes, warehouses, and further back, the factories. That seems entirely on-theme, and then to see a comment saying how it looks outright ugly... well, I got a little nasty, I'll admit, and probably let my feelings for all the other times that SUASD have (from my perspective) unfairly knocked a game for its art.
      The points about the price point are well made and I do agree overall. The money being flipped on each side, and overall it could be of better quality since as has been mentioned the big bulk of that newly doubled price probably is coming from those big beefy miniatures, so getting more/better artists probably would have been ideal. But even so, to me the game doesn't seem outright ugly to me, and that just kinda set me off, that initial comment.

    I've kind of love how this review sort of descended into that really pained complaining about a game where you still kind of love it, but it has issues and the only way you can really talk about them is in a way that just feels painful.A great video and I was sort intrigued by the idea of it, the sort of hidden economy stuff seemed interesting, but yes, I feel like you're right that you're literally just paying for big boats. If your game can remade in twenty minutes with $5 dollars in office supplies, then you need to make the effort to dress it up. With an hour, $10 dollars, and a color printer, anyone could make a game that looks better with personal flair on it too. Imagine an Elite, Eve, or Escape Velocity themed version of this game?

    It kinda sucked when I played this with 5 people where only 1 actually knew the game because we quickly ran out of money in the economy. I had an early lead because I invested in a lot of containers expecting the value to go up. But as we ran out of money, the value plummeted, so other players got containers wayyy cheaper and I got passed in points. Still got like second though because a couple of the players were completely out of money with full warehouses by the end. Hopefully it'll go better if we play it again since we actually know some of the things not to do now.

    So, depending on what StarQuinns meant by "loss," Matt has lost either €10 or €26.
    It depends on if they're including the loss of market value on the original Klingon eggs, or are just asking about the difference between the sale price and the purchase price of the new eggs.

    6:50, the moment it indeed became clear that Matt had gone "all in", auctioning his pants.

    Hey SU&SD, new to your great channel. I was trying to look to see if you guys have reviewed The Thing: Infection At Outpost 31. I looked but you have a LOT of vids, lol. It seems like the kind of Thing (get it) you guys would do but I know that the company wasn’t shipping the game directly, outside of North America. I value your game judgment and just wanted to know what you thought about it. I don’t do social media really so I’m asking here. 😁

    I played a game that was like this but more card based. Can anyone help me out?
    You would bid on goods on boats and you'd be able to upgrade your base with abilities.
    [Edit] - Import/Export was the game I was thinking about. Nice little game with a similar theme to this.

    A game this simple shouldn't even be 40 dollars.
