The Holy Roman Empire 1504, Götz von Berlichingen was the youngest son of a Swabian noble. Inheriting nothing apart from a military education and a suit of armor. He joined the army as a Knight but an incompetent artillery crew changes his life. Severing his right hand and forging a the legend, Götz of the Iron Hand!

Not that I'm sure about the average life span of a medieval general, but 81 seems pretty impressive for someone who got his hand shot off before modern medicine.
Even without the hand getting shot off, getting to 81 was impressive at that time

@@SnarkyZazu Poor people were the ones living much shorter lives than today. Rich nobles had superiour nutrition, access to better medical treatment, lots of leisure etc. and could live into their 80s or 90s if they were lucky.
The average life span was lower. But the main Factor was the higher Child mortality. Think of having 5 Children three die before the age of five and two get 80 you would have an average live expectancy below 35. That's one reason why summery statistics can be misleading. Especially when the variance is rarely reported.
fun fact, Kentaro Miura did not base the character Guts in the manga Berserk off of Gotz of the Iron Hand, Miura had never even heard of Gotz until well after he had given his character the metal arm. this is just one of those strange almost insane coincidences that happen in the world.

@@ordelian7795 Doubtful, Miura was always quite open that his character was based on Rutger Hauer's (entirely fictional) character from "Flesh & Blood" (who WAS a roughly 15/16th Century Mercenary, just one with all his limbs).
Kinda like how an Austrian genocidal maniac and a Japanese manga-artist both settled on blond hair and blue eyes as a visual shorthand for "Ancient, Long-Lost Race Of Strong Guys." VERY uncomfortable coincidence, that.
If you ever come to visit southern Germany and want to see the iron Hands of Götz, they are on display in the museum of Burg Jagsthausen (also called Götzenburg), not far from the city of Heilbronn. In the summer you can also see the play by Goethe there. Quite a show and worth the visit 🙂

@@ty_teynium yes Goethe wrote Faust as well as Götz von Berlichingen, but Faust 1 and 2 are his most famous plays.
As a frequent user of a prosthetic hand, the charisma bonus is real. Folks go nuts for a mechanical fist.

There is a legend that said that at one point he left his usual feuding, took his sword, his armour and his metal hand and went of to fight armies of demons and their Five leaders. History does not like to talk about that period.

Yeah, the manga went into a bit more detail about his adventures, too bad Extra Credits didn't have time to cover the three decades of chronicles.

Another one of those historical personages whom really needs a movie or miniseries about them. What a fascinating life story.

I mean, we have Berserk?
honestly there are probably countless man like him, most forgotten or barely remembered. Council leaders of cities, small knights, etc. The reason we remember him is because his story survived till our time, while many others like him probably didnt.
What isn't well known is that on top of being a mercenary and poet, he also hunted demons with the aid of an elf and a sword called Dragonslayer.
That sounds suspiciously like the plot of berserk >.>

@@ColddirectorHe more of a Conan the Barbarian type than Guts though since he made a fortune in kidnapping high ranking lords and made an enemy out of many Imperial cities and towns included religious fanatics hence the nickname Robber Knight, yet due to his thick plot armour he escape Imperial Ban (similar to mark of sacrifice instead of being hunted by daemons, Götz got the whole army of knights, Lords and fanatics on his back) twice and live a rich life with 5 healthy children to carry his name, so Götz is the anti-Guts.
As a HRE stan, I've been appreciating the resurgence of its history in popular history culture.

You forgot to mention that the Götz von Berlichen got his Iron Fist from the master engineers and blacksmiths in Nürnberg, the silicon Valley of medieval Europe!
Possibly. We don’t really know where either of his prostheses were made. We only know with reasonably certainty that Hans von Mittelhausen (in Alsace, now part of France), who died in 1564, owned a prosthesis from the same maker.

Gotz, I believe, is what we might call a chad.
Spends his entire life fighting in renaissance era warfare as a mercenary, gets summoned by the Emperor to fight the Ottomans in his 60s, and lives to 81. With a clockwork hand. He should be called Götz of the Iron Balls.

This is the EC video/series that I did not know I needed. As a history lover, especially of the Early Modern period/HRE, era this brings me great excitement and joy to watch!
Part III of the Knights series on Curiosity Stream spends a lot of time talking about Gotz. Definitely worth a watch.

I love stories like these about disabled men like Götz who rejected a life of comfort and meritocracy he easily could’ve lived and chose instead to keep pursuing glory. He could have retired, and no one would blame him, but he lived for the fight and doesn’t seem the type to piddle through life on pity. In no small way, his tenacity and his own peculiarity earned his place in the annuals of history.
Meritocracy, do you even know how monarchy works?
What you guys have missed in the video is the story of how Gotz is fighting Ganishka's, Kushan Emperor, monster underlings with a wizard, a boy, two fairies, a Christian knight and her servant

I'm sad that you didn't pronounce Götz correctly. An ö isn't an o! But I really love that you shined some light on Götz von Berlichingen - he's one of the most famous germans of all time and, sadly, seems to slide into obscurity.
Its hard to write the exact sound for us English, but I think it's a little like geutz? Or geotz?

Not simply his hand but also his response to authority and crass retort.
With out Gotz we never would have had the perfection of the scene where Ash gets his new hand =)

I admit, Gotz was belligerent, but I can't deny...he has a hustle to rival Ned Kelly! In fact, the two are eerily similar in certain aspects. Probably a coincidence, though, they were from completely different parts of the world. Maybe Convergent People Defense...?
