The titel of Holy Roman Empire was around before the Roman Empire was even gone. To piss off the actual Roman Emperor. The Ottomans just took over that conflict by right of conquest.
Indeed. When Empress Irene was on the throne in the east, the Pope declared Charlemagne as Emperor. There was even talks of a marriage between the two, to 'unite west and east', though death tragically got in the way of such a union. This was due to a Pope wanting the support of Charlamane in depended his Papel see from attack, and using a title is not exactly a new way to curry favor.
I think what they meant was that the Ottomans had a bone to pick with the Hapsburgs specifically thanks to that title (among other things), because their houses took on the Title of Roman Emperor at roughly the same time and the Ottomans saw their claim as more legitimate.
As far as Western Europe was concerned, the Holy Roman Empire was in fact THE Roman Empire: in-continuity with that empire of the Caesars of antiquity. When the Ottomans conquered Constantinople, their empire also became part of the Roman Imperial tradition, at least in theory. In essence, the HRE and the Ottomans were bickering over which empire was the true successor to Rome. 1452 is when Frederick III von Hapsburg ascended to the imperial throne, from which point his dynasty would rule the empire nearly interrupted until its final collapse under the weight of Napoleonic France.
In many ways Vienna actually was a final hold against a growing Muslim empire. To say it wasn’t, is a little disingenuous. Just because it was an important religious battle doesn’t mean that Muslims are bad people, it just means that religion frequently does affect politics and war.

1.It wasn't called Istanbul, Ottomans changed the name of Constantinople to Konstantiniyye when they took it. Istanbul named in 1920s shortly after Republic of Turkey founded. 2.General opinion thinks Ottoman Crown cared their ancestoral roots but in reality Ottomans only carried Turkic traditions in the military. BUT in society things were VERY, VERY different. When Mehmed II took Konstantiniyye and tried to have a more centralized government Turkmen people living in Anatolia revolted to him because that type of Government would take their freedom away and eventually damage their living style, from 1453 Ottoman Crown always in fight with Turks (Turkmens) in Anatolia which because of that Ottoman Army relied more on Janissary type non-Turkic soldiers but trained with Turkic Discipline and tactics...Yeah Akinci, Sipahi and Deli Cavalries were mostly Turkmen Soldiers and higher ranks than the Janissaries (Which this caused problems inside the army between Janissaries and Cavalries in many Festivals and Celebrations usually Janissaries and Sipahis get into large fights) Even for that Turks in Ottoman Society was one of the poorest and seen as how can i say...Low born in Ottoman society because of their revolts against the crown even at one point name of Turk was a insult to another person. Which many Turks including myself who knows history about it hates Osmanoğlu Family (House of Osman rulers of Ottoman Empire) Yeah they carried out Turkic Traditions in the military but they simply killed more Turks than anyone else also made the Empire more Arabic because of Islam (Made Empire more weaker as the society and governing body get more Islamized). WHICH This was one of the reasion new Turkish Republic was a more Turkish Nationalist and had Secular beliefs, because in 18-19 century many Turkish commanders of the Ottoman Army like Enver, Fevzi Çakmak, Mustafa Kemal, İsmet İnönü, Kazım Karabekir etc. Were more Turk Nationalists (Only Enver were the Hardcore one others were defending their Turkic identity but they also respected other nationalities living in Anatolia, meanwhile Enver...Well, you know...) but have disagreements about Ottoman Empire should be Secular or keep its power on Islamic World.
Not wrong about the official name from what I understand, but Istanbul had unofficially been called Istanbul for centuries from what I understand. Admittedly, I could be mistaken...
Thats something a person would say that follows the stupid Kemalist Ideology.... Making everything bad that is about the ottomans and the empire. The "turk" being a insult thing was because many people in the government simply werent turkish (turkic) if somebody called me arab i would be mad too.
Tolerant to other cultures? Lol the Turks are extremely intolerant towards other cultures, especially the ethnic people of anatolia and East Turkey (the Kurds, Assyrians etc.). The ottomans weren't the problem, nor was the "not being nationalistic enough" vieuws. No, the ottomans were just as racist and nationalistic then the modern Turks. However, their hubris and narcissism caused the downfall of the ottoman empire. They were more busy with religion and were plagued by weak sultans (perhaps because every sultan killed his brothers having a very limited amount of candidates for the throne). Having a kemalist government will not work (we had the past 100 years to see that), however an islamofacist, turk nationalistic leadership like we have now in 2019 won't work either. I suggest a leadership who wishes equality for all, and who better then those who suffered the most (the Kurds). You will know their love and wish for equality to be real because they suffered the most, and only thing the Kurds want is peace and cultural freedom for all. Everyone is free to live.

Saying families “jockeyed” to give e their sons to the janissaries is grossly misleading. While it is true there were times, usually during famine or when a family had too many children, that they would “give” their children away to the janissaries this was not the norm. Don’t be mistaken. This was mass kidnapping.
Well... initially. Yes, the Janissay Corps was made up of boys taken by the Devşirme (mainly Greeks and Albanians) during the fithteenth and sixthteen centuries, but by about the mid-seventeenth century (when the Siege of Vienna takes place) this method had been abandoned.
I am thinking that this is the time when the Janissary stopped being a purely military unit and became what the Ottomans called "The deep state" (no kidding, the concept actually came from the Ottomans.) Families saw the Janissary as a way to gain political power, they became corrupt and all powerful
I’m really glad this trilogy looks at the Second Battle of Vienna as a political strategic event and not the battle over religion more specifically a battle over the evil “dumb Muslim hordes” as I’ve seen several videos that mention how this was all over religion and trying to draw parallels between something that happened almost 400 years ago and now. That kind of stuff is dangerous and it’s exactly how misinformation gets out like they mention in the opening and how tragedies like the Mosque shooting in New Zealand happen. Racism is born when history amounts to a twisted persons views in modern day society. Thank you Extra Credits for making this series
While I fully agree that the Siege of Vienna was not a religious battle per se, I still think it's ignorant to play the religious aspect of it down that much. The ally defending Vienna, wich worth to mention included the state of the church, later gave itself the name "Holy League". And it's pretty certain that many warriors on both sides of the conflict saw those battles as a clash of faiths.
The name Holy League was actually already in usage as this league on paper existed since quite some time and defeated the ottomans in the Battle of Lepanto for example
Hate having "no place in society" is one of those phrases that irks me because as stated it's arguably a bad thing. Hate will always exist, and to drive people who hate out of society altogether ensures they will never rejoin it, makes them look more the victim to sympathizers, and delegitimatizes honest criticism of them, along with removing some of the effect behind using them as an example of a bad thing. Just critiquing a common trite phrase which gets on ones nerves; it could also be interpreted as hate and hateful people should have no power or ability to influence society, which is a laudable goal (and given the shooters stated aims one which many seem to be ignoring in a tragically ironic way), but _that's not what those words say_ and we should express that differently.

yeah... and mehmed II claimed the title when he finished of eastearn roman empire
*sabaton - Winged Hussars INTENSIFIES*

Thank you for sharing you knowledge. =)

The idea didn’t begin in Istanbul as it was still called Constantinople
It would only be Istanbul when turkey was made
The Ottomans had several names for their capital, one of them was Istanbul.

"Well, that's kinda harsh. Branding your elite soldiers with some sort of serial number. Wait, does the ruler have one too? OH SHI-"

Rick Stuifzand That's a simple redefinition of words that do not only mean that.
Thank you for this amazing video.
