Ahhh Age of Empires II... I mean yeah actual history too. That said as much as I love the Hussars in the field I loved wrecking entire civilizations with Elite Janissary and cannons more.
Many European countries are naming their modern vehicles after their historical units. It's usually that or carnivore animals in Europe. While in the US they tend to use historical figures' names.
I always thought the Winged Hussars had one of the most imposing uniforms in history. Seeing them riding toward you must have felt like an army of angels storming your way.
Here's an interesting fact: The United States recently approved for Poland to manufacture their own version of the F-35 fighter/stealth jet. Poland renamed it, "The Hussars". So if Russia dares to march across the border to challenge the Polish people, the Winged Hussars will take flight once more and beat back the enemy!
I’d love to see a complete video of the Great Northern War Series. It’s one of my favorite series from this channel. It also has my favorite songs, “Song of Gunfire.” I love all that you guys do in the name of sharing history. ❤
It honestly hurts me that the Austrians so quickly forgot what the Poles had done for them and joined the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and if I'm not mistaken, sweet irony, the only European country that did not recognize the partitions was the Ottoman Empire.
I get your point, but the Poles didn’t keep their defense pact and thereby even kind of betrayed the Austrians. As stated in the video, they only joined after being paid. So they were more like mercenaries, then allies.
Well, while Austrians were not too interested in preventing the partition of Poland, even if they were interested, they would have needed to fight wars against the much stronger Russians to prevent them. So long story short, even if Austria was a good and thankful neighbor, Poland would still have faced the same fate, with Austria joining them in being dismantled
Context: The reason Vienna held so long was because the Wallachians under Șerban Cantacuzino, despite being on the Ottoman side, assisted the Viennese garrison until THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVED. And the Ottomans NEVER SAW IT COMIIIIING.

@@InteloPL You mean Islam? Why? There have been plenty examples of both prosperous and powerful societies that are Muslim. Even today. I don't get why you feel that way.
28:58 Little correction: The (noise of the) wooden wings didn't frighten anybody. In fact in the cacophony of sounds of clattering metal armor, hundreds of galloping horses, men screaming and gunshots, the wings weren't even audible. Those wings were meant as defenses against lasso attacks (especially from the crimean tartars).
28:30 If you start playing this video at 11:31:30 on 31 December, the Winged Hussars will arrive just as the clock strikes midnight. Start your year off right.
Fun fact about hussars: They still exist but have been mostly converted to armored units. Poland has no hussar units but in May of this year they announced that their F-35 fleet would be called “Huzars” in honor of the winged hussars.
So that's where the Winged Hussars earned their fame to glory... Nice! This series on the Siege of Vienna is just what I needed, not only did I learn about the origin as to why the Winged Hussars earned so much glory, (And their own Sabaton song) but also how this event marked the begining of the road leading to the creation of my second favorite nation in world history, the Austro-Hungarian Empire (Also referred to as the Austrian Empire from its permanent formation in 1804 until 1867)
It's been suggested that this episode of History is what inspired. Tolkien in the Battle of pelinor fields. As this makes Poland equivalent to Rohan, this checks out.
Given that Tolkien was a medievalist, he might have actually been more inspired by Otto the Great's victory over the Magyars at the Battle of Lechfeld.

There was a tale that some Vienna people actually get out form their forts to buy food and stuff at these bazaar and bring them back inside their cities because the lack of food and necessary stuff inside the city wall xD.
The best part is that the Winged Hussars didn't even win/decide the battle, the HRE infantry already did that, Mustafa had no chance of holding against even a moderate army of fresh and motivated troops. It was more like "well, we are already here, so TIME TO FLEX" for the Polish king. Btw. that's also why Austrian historians don't make that big deal out of it, but history nerds love it.
