Personally I both agree and disagree with your assessment of the motivation behind the siege. Yes, everything you said has merit, but mostly for the nobles and royalty, not the commoners. I mean let us be honest the difference in religion in theory would have been a bigger motivation for the commoners.

It honestly hurts me that the Austrians so quickly forgot what the Poles had done for them and joined the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and if I'm not mistaken, sweet irony, the only European country that did not recognize the partitions was the Ottoman Empire.

    • @-Q-lk9li
      @-Q-lk9li 3 месяца назад +18

I get your point, but the Poles didn’t keep their defense pact and thereby even kind of betrayed the Austrians. As stated in the video, they only joined after being paid. So they were more like mercenaries, then allies.

The best part is that the Winged Hussars didn't even win/decide the battle, the HRE infantry already did that, Mustafa had no chance of holding against even a moderate army of fresh and motivated troops. It was more like "well, we are already here, so TIME TO FLEX" for the Polish king.
Btw. that's also why Austrian historians don't make that big deal out of it, but history nerds love it. I mean, of course, they are GOD DAMN WINGED HUSSARS.

The Polish king was the commander-in-chief during the battle and commanded the coalition troops. So I think he was a BIG factor in the victory

There were also over 10 thousand Polish infantry on the left flank, it wasn't just "HRE" infantry.

But this wasn't some crazy campaign with 15 battles in sequence using bleeding edge tactics never seen before. The other guys who didn't have the honor of being the leader would have probably done just fine.

My point was mostly about the Winged Hussar craze, not to diminish whatever Janosh the Halbedier did.

    Defense 101:
    1. Dig a ditch!
    2. Done? Dig another one!
I mean maybe in this case it was not a ditch per se, but the importance of improving the physical defenses is so important in this case! Very much the opposite of Battle of Winterfell (from GoT)

Fun fact, Polish Cavalry didn’t use long swords but special type of Sabre (as Sabre was really fucking popular in Poland)
It was called Husar Sabre, made especially for them. Less curved than Armenian one, allowed for stronger and faster strikes. It was ideal for horseback fighting
