    • @otgunz
      @otgunz 4 года назад +141

      I think black was used as a medical symbol since it also represented death. Then in more modern times white replaced black for warfare issues. In the musket warfare era the white smoke from the black powder rifles rendered the battlefield visibility, European armies used dark and highly colored uniforms, shiny straps cross or one sided and huge hats to distinguish who is a friend who is a foe. I think in that time period field medics turned using white to be invisible in the crossfire not to be targeted. Then that tradition continued as the modern universal doctor, medic, nurse colors. Then I don't know why they now use the cyran/turquois together with white.

So in regards to real world Hospitaliers and Templar’s would have been real world Paladins as they were essentially warrior-monks. And in the AD&D world Monks were their own class which didn’t use any armor, used only blunted weapons, had very few spells but had some hand to hand skills. So I guess...none of the above?

      Their core belief was always to fight for their faith both off and on the battlefield; however apart from their oaths to protect and care for the sick, their medical knowledge paled compared to the Muslims and Jews around them. This is why the lasting legacy of the Knights Hospitaliers is the paramedic and EMT service rather than the actual hospital itself.

    Religious Military Orders were quintessencial to the formation of my country, Portugal, during the XII and XII centuries. Crusaders on route to the Holly Land assisted our first king, D. Afonso Henriques, on the successful siege of Lisbon against the Muslims, and even his father, Count D. Henrique of Burgundy, came to the Peninsula as a knight on Crusade.
    Various donations were given to orders such as the Templars and Hospitallers throughout Portugal, but also to other minor orders, such as the Avis, that would eventually give name to the second dinasty of Portuguese kings, when one of its grand masters became the king D. João I.
    Curious fact - which I hope K&G will bring up in the Templars episode - after the fatal order to exterminate the Knights Templar was given, and this order was virtually extinguished, king D. Dinis managed to "save" them and preserve it in the form of the newly established _Ordem_ _de_ _Cristo_ - or Order of Christ. Their symbol is well present in Portugal's golden age, in the sails of the ships that crossed the unknown oceans.
    It still exists in Portugal, and its Grand Master is the acting President of the Republic.
    Edit: Spain also has incredibly important orders of this sort to their own History, such as Santiago Order and Calatrava Order.

      There was no peace to be made, just a return of american forces. Similarly to how the americans occupied the japanese and left them after some years except with the japanese, they were able to work with the americans and build a better country while the afganistanis wasted the chance.

    My God... this video is SUPERB! Beautiful!
    I love the animations, the art and... the font! Those letters are lovely!
    I would suggest you guys doing a pdf of the entire miniseries - with all that art and text - and sell it; I'd buy it in a heartbeat!
    Can`t wait for your take on the Teutonic Knights, my favorite Holy Order! :)

    They really went nuts in the character creator here...

    I’m very excited about this video and this 3 part series. The 3 orders are all interesting and I don’t know which I am most interested in but the Hospitallers are obviously significant because I believe they were the first of the three and they are still around if I’m not mistaken. Again, excellent video. I’m very much looking forward to more of this.

      Wrong. Popular opinion, because they're mine as well. I am in healthcare and my hobbies are BJJ, heavy lifting, shooting stuff and bankrupting my kingdom by building hospitals everywhere after a crusade in CK2. Hospitallers speak to my heart.

    Loving these videos about different societies and knightly orders. Devin, you should read the book “The Templars and The Assassins: The militia of Heaven” which follows both groups more in depth. After seeing your video on the Hashashin I think you may have already, but if you haven’t, it’s worth a read.

    I got a chance to go to Israel last year and tour some Hospitaller and Templar castles and the one Teutonic castle as well, in the holy land. It’s funny I was at Beth Gebelin castle last year and it is literally in ruins but there is a Delek gas station in front of the castle ruins. If you didn’t know what it was you’d drive right past it.
