It's cool you show yourself cooking the stuff you're going to turn into the stuff you're going to leave in the thing you just made.

'Relieved' to see that you staked the outhouse down. Being light structures, they sometimes blew over in high winds. You might want to fill in the front of the seat area as a 'splash guard.' Waste doesn't always drop where intended. Agricultural lime also works very well to keep the outhouse 'sweet.' Even primitive outhouses had oval seats so I applaud your idea of doing a bit more in that regard. It would not surprise me if your dad has a spare toilet seat in one of his storage buildings. You already own it, so why not use it? The spiders won't need them.

    • @jamesellsworth9673
      @jamesellsworth9673 6 лет назад +1

That was used as well. We had plenty of agricultural lime and didn't use wood stoves, so we used what we had.

EPISODE 14: The Pallet Wood Outhouse. This project should have been one of the first builds, but we ended up experimenting with different projects. But we finally managed to build a thunderbox! However, it certainly isn't perfect! We realised we should have made the slope on the roof the other way, so that rain water would flow backwards off the roof. We also needed to box in the seat with more pallet wood and add a folding lid to it (we'll be boxing it in soon to prevent any unwanted splashback...) Either way, it's another fun project and a good addition to the site - Hope you enjoy it.

Digging that privy hole with a post-holer would've been a lot easier and give you deep, straight sides. Might've been worth hauling one out to your build site but it looks like you got the job done.

    Mike,
I see you took my suggestions from some months back and built the outhouse and brought a leaf rake to clear the ground. As you said you will be making improvements on it as it is a learning progress so I have some improvement suggestions for you.
    1) Your dad mentioned the leaning roof for rain run off. Lean it toward the BACK of the outhouse, not the front. Nobody wants to exit or enter an outhouse and have rain water gushing down on them. Plus rain run off (when you finally get rain) will saturate and dig out the ground in front of the outhouse.
    2) The crescent moon that's on the doors isn't simply decoration. It is also for ventilation. Sure you have a bit of air flow at the bottom but you need it at the top too. Outhouses accumulate hot gases from usage and that gas rises so ventilation is needed at the top of the outhouse. Perhaps drilling some 2 inch holes around the top of the walls.
    3) The Seat. The best thing to do is find an old toilet seat that isn't being used and mount that on the top of the bench. Sure you can remake the hole in a oval but even military latrines 60/70 years ago have toilet seats. Also the bench itself. The front you have just the one cross bar. I suggest enclosing the front completely for many reasons. A) It allows gases to escape from the top only. B) If you have to take a leak while sitting down, you won't spray on your feet. C) It makes for a better structural support.

Nice! Definitely a nice thing to have now that you have the Tiki Bar! We have an outhouse at our house...a 2 seater! My daughters, when they were young, lived in our pond all day long. Since they were always wet, they weren't allowed to go into the house. Therefore, the double-seater out house was used a LOT! They would swim to the end of the pond, get out and run into the woods to go to the bathroom, and would hold hands as they sat on the seats LOL One thing we have on our outhouse is a trap door in the back about halfway up the wall. Nice for easier spreading of the ash we threw in regularly.

Your timing is impeccable. Due to strong peer pressure from folks like yourself, Survival Lilly and Coal Cracker Bushcraft, I decided to start a bush craft camp on the far back edge of our property. A place to unwind, attempt primitive skills, and use as a hunting outpost.
My best friend and his kids came over just this past Sunday to help clear the brush and small trees from the site (which created a nice pile of poles!). An outhouse will be the very first structure we build. I hope to have his children become a large part of this project, and a bathroom is KEY! My lovely wife would also appreciate it ;)

Great job Mike and Dad. Not sure if this was mentioned by another, but the toilet paper can be stored in a large coffee can/tub with a lid. That will keep critters and bugs from stealing it for bedding. Also perhaps a tin can with some punch designs in it to hold a candle for atmosphere and deordorization 😉 while you do your business. Don't forget a reclaimed rainwater station hanging from a tree with a bar of biosoap in a ladies stocking.

A bucket of kitty litter below the seat works well as an outhouse waste management system. obviously more the better. I am partial to making a large "pan" under the seat, and having it accessible from outside the outhouse to make raking it out easier. use the facility, then sprinkle a couple scoops. I am also fond of making use of a solar vent fan to help air out an outhouse (yes it is an expense, and the idea of the series is to do it cheap or free. it is a luxury to be able to vent out an outhouse)

Well done! Maybe finding an abandoned potty with a good seat you can repurpose? And now that you have a place to park your a** to find the relief you crave, beside the sawdust, you might find that putting your stove ash down the hole a good thing too.
As to your heat and drought, it is full on here in the states too. Out in california, my daughter with her hubby and two kids had to evacuate and move down to her mom's place. My oldest daughter with her hubby and kid are next to evac. Here, in missouri, we have gone from moderate drought to severe and our crops are not doing well either. Corn and soybeans are greatly stunted and the kernels are not bound to be anywhere near high quality once the harvests are in. We had no spring, a late running winter and then straight into summer with high heat and very little rain. So, we have empathy for your situation as it is much like ours and most of the rest of our poor earth. Be safe and hope your run of heat ends soon.

I've just discovered your channel and I think it's a fantastic thing to do together. On top of that you're sharing skills that seem to be forgotten today. In a throw away society this series of videos are really refreshing. My dad was a carpenter and loved sea fishing as well as a bit of shooting for hare/rabbit and pheasant occasionally. We ate all he caught too so it wasn't for sport. He also had an allotment. It makes me wish I'd had the chance to work with him like this. We were made to create and I think there's nothing in the world like using something created by your own hands. Brilliant work guys.

A friend of mine built an outhouse for his cabin from a shipping box for an optical lab lens generator. Just had to make a peaked roof, added in two crank-out windows from a camper (very important!) and a door (again from a camper) It was the perfect size, you could open the windows quickly while seated (Pe-e-ew!) And he did cut a quarter moon over his door (and screened it, mosquitoes in Minnesota summers are horrible)

if you get a plastic bucket and cut the bottom out, it would work as a chute. meaning less mess and more accuracy.

You should make a compost bin, to place leaves and such in. so can start on making good compost for the garden. also Make sure you save your wood ash from fires. Put it in a bucket for when you use the outhouse. sprinkle some of the wood ash after you done your business. it will help control the smell and help a bit with insects. Also should try to find like a cheap or free solar light. that could put in and outside the outhouse for Night time use. Inside you could have a battery powered light. Like a button touch light.

Here in the Rural Southeastern U.S. I have used these Outhouses many many times!. An oval hole in the seat works much Better! Also You might want to cover it with wood ashes from the fire... This would provide some Activated Charcoal to help absorb odors and other filth. You often see pictures of these with a 1/4 moon opening cut in the door. The moon was used to designate the WOMEN'S toilet. The outhouse for the men had a 5-pointed Star window in the door,.

Haha you've never used a thunder box before! put a floor in to get your 1" back and keep the crawling creatures out of your Pants!!
Oh and the front top board of the throne needs to stand vertical to give you some room for the crown Jewels etc!! and maybe cover the front of the throne area? in case of spry painting episodes! :-D great fun!
