    *Breitling's New Super 8 Is A Fraud | RANT&H*
    In this week's episode of RANT&H, Christian dives into the new Breitling Super 8, and why it's a confused, unnecessary piece.
    When Breitling sold to CVC Partners (or 80% of them anyway), a lot of us were incredibly excited, hoping that it would help to elevate them to some even higher place. And then they dropped the Super 8. A reissue of a piece they'd designed in World War II basically designed to help pilots more accurately drop bombs on people.
    There's a couple of huge issues. The first is the size - at 50mm, while historically accurate, is just frankly absurd for anyone to be wearing on their wrist (the original Super 8s were designed to be worn around the thigh). The second is that the original reference was EXCLUSIVELY a stop watch, with no standard timekeeping to be found. By contrast, the reissue does tell the time, but features no stop watch function.
    The ref. 637 was manufactured in the 1940s, and this is where the biggest issue comes from - Breitling is calling the Super 8 a freakin NAVITIMER (a line that was not introduced until 1952, mind you). In essence, they're taking a historical reference, and attaching an irrelevant model line to it to give it more cred and frankly, it's just kind of shameful.

    As someone who has been in the industry and read a lot , this reference is based on a reference used by Bombers during WWII which were strapped on the thighs to measure drop times. It's based on a war time instrument created by the Huit academy and looks incredible in person. It's 46mm not 50mm and wears well on the wrist with very small lugs. A nice product not for everyone.
    As for Breitling having the Navitimer only, it's actually not their most popular collection as of last quarter. The premier collection has been the top seller followed by Superocean Heritage and Avenger. Breitling just had it's biggest quarter in it's history and and Georges Kern is doing phenomenal work cherishing their incredible history.
    A little knowledge goes a long way. Always enjoy your videos but this one is cringe.

    Brietlings newer ranges are appealing to a new customer, which is great. Sharing movements with Tudor, is also great. Case sizes are reducing balancing the ranges. Sales and demand have increased based on the sale figures. So your rant is now kind of irrelevant to some extent. Perhaps they should should just change the bezel colour and call it something different, like boring predictable Rolex. They should make a new brown bezel and call it the Rolex Turd 💩.

    Private Equity firms typically purchase a company attempting to quickly show exceptional revenue so that the company can be flipped for a quick profit. CVC will have little respect of the past. History. I expect CVC to pump Brietling for all it is worth in an attempt to squeeze out every cent of revenue. Expect more models as they attempt to dramatically increase sales. Brietling could be that mismanaged that they resemble a shadow of what you have seen, very very sad.

    This is exactly how conglomerates work: they buy a brand, and then squeeze every possible cent out of that brand's established reputation for a quick return. They do this by cutting corners, slapping iconic nomenclature on inappropriate products (like classifying a bunch of new watches as "Navitimers"), introducing horizontal integration across similar brands they own, etc.

    There's a number of problems with this video. Firstly, there's a huge difference between a "re-issue" and an "inspired by....." product. Watches by Christopher Ward, for example, inspired by automotive icons, aren't "fake" because they're not cars....in the same way, this watch design by Breitling, isn't a fake because it's not a stop watch. Speaking of watch (or in this case, stop watch) history.....are we REALLY going to throw mud over the way in which the stop watch was used?!?! I'm shocked, listen, for all those people who are fans of WWII Flieger watch designs.....how do you imagine those Flieger watches were used? Perhaps when the Luftwaffe were flying bombing raids over London, they carefully placed the watches back in their boxes prior to the flight....you know, to avoid future generations associating those watches with the murder and death of innocent civilian men, women and children....yeah, right! Finally, where do these rules come from, as to what Breitling can or can't place in their watch lines? And more importantly, why does it matter? If you like the watch design, and it has a good serviceable movement, should we care if it's called a Navitimer or Bob Smith? It's clear T&H have an issue with Breitling, but after this video, I'm none the wiser as to what the issue really is. If this rant is really the basis for Breitling angst, then I believe there are bigger issues to worry about in the watch world....like the pending death of analogue timepieces in the UK.

    Your raise some good points here but I’m not completely in agreement with you as to the overall change in direction that Breitling are looking to take.
    These new Watches pay homage to some of the brand heritage but I don’t see a problem in taking multiple points of inspiration and then adding them into one watch as they have done here. Whether it’s a Navitimer or not is academic to me but I obviously can see your point.
    I do agree that these next few years are going to be very important ones for the brand so we’ll have to see what other changes and re-issues are forthcoming, in the meantime it did enjoy your video so thanks for sharing and all the best! Paul

  • @ignasi6611
    @ignasi6611 6 лет назад +1

    well, my opinion on the issue is less than relevant, but i'll compare this to what you told about vulcain, and the 1st thing georges kern did on breitling was simplify the number of references, organize in fewer collections that make sense, and that's what they have done, they scrapped a lot of shit, all quartz (except professional line) is scrapped, simplified, less bling, new lines, heritage lines, and i just see in this product something that you say often, that watches need to innovate respecting their heritage, an that's what they have done, they took a stop watch and made a watch with the shape of it. Not doing a reissue. You just value risky and original moves when they align with your personal taste. And if there's just an air, earth and water collection right now, the logic step is to put this one in the air collection, that now happens to be called navitimer. And please Chris, don't forget brands main reason to exist is to make money, not to be a museum of heritage with slight modification. Breitling needed to approach the woman and Asian market, so if they make smaller watches that's cool. It would be sad that they started doing more quartz basic models for 1000$ just to stay afloat, so don't roast them their whole strategy just because you don't like one watch. I love you and your channel anyways and this whole message came from the deepest respect and admiration.

So the person who wants that look probably on average doesn’t want to pay several thousand bucks. And the heritage is so contrived, this is supposed to be a count down timer. I suspect they will sell almost 0 of these and if you do happen to want one, just wait for the 70% off on jomashop in a year. Zero thumbs up.

    Christian, I have a question for you and the answer to this might soften the blow of disgust you have for this watch. I see a red arrow mark on the outer part of the dial possibly connected to the inner part of the bezel. If the bezel rotates than that red marker can be used similar to a diver bezel but being that it onoy has the red mark and no numbers, could be a indication that its onlh purpose is timing seconds counting down.

    • @TheoandHarris
      @TheoandHarris  6 лет назад

      Venus, YOU'RE A GENIUS. I've only ever seen the still shots of it and in every single one of them, the red triangle is in the same location, so I assumed it was just a style callback to the original more than anything functional. It took seeing it at a really weird angle to notice it was attached to the bezel. Still aggravated by the thing's existence, but at least they attempted to get something right. Naturally the issue then becomes trying to stop the seconds hand to get precise with the elapsed time.

    Breitling, especially since mr Kern took over, made real interesting, well, strange decisions. The navitimer 8 is another example of that. As well as bringing the Avenger line under the roof of the Chronomat and taking the winged logo away of the new released watches is something I do notice with very mixed feelings.
    The aim right now is the Asian market where, couple of years ago, Breitling not even existed. The future will tell whether the investors were right, I right now am very happy having my shiny 43 winged logo Avenger in my collection...

    I don’t know enough about Breitling to understand their motives, but I definitely admire your passion and your courage in criticizing a time-honored brand! Don’t listen to the jealous critics here; you’re doing a great job. I especially admire your self-deprecating sense of humor. Besmudge!😂 A a great new word to add to my vocabulary. 😏 I know you’ll keep learning and teaching as well! 👍

    Breitling IMO isn’t really a continuation of the original brand, it was desovled and liquidated in the 70’s and sold the rights to the Navitimer and some of the tolling to Sinn to create their 903 model, later when Breitling was revived I believe they tried to take Sinn to court to get the rights back which seems pretty scummy to me.

    Theo and Harris: Besmirch I think is the word you were looking for. I agree with you. The Navitimer is an icon as is the Rolex Submariner. If Rolex came out with some crazy line of watches named and branded Submariner, boy would it hit the fan. The Black Bay name does not appear on the watches Tudor make. I guess they can include anything they want under that banner. Where as Breitling have or intend to scribble Navitimer on everything. Tudor's marketing has resurrected the brand and sells more watches as a result of innovation and savvy. Breitling now have an identity crisis brought about by a poorly conceived marketing strategy. People may well now be repulsed from the brand and recovery may take some time if this is the case.

    • @TheoandHarris
      @TheoandHarris  6 лет назад

      For all the crap I give Tudor about seemingly everything being a Black Bay, I didn't even think about the fact that they don't actually put that name on the watches. It's still annoying, but you're right, Breitling DEFINITELY takes the cake on this one.

    Breitling is a love or hate thing. I personally like the vintage Breitlings, but the new ones turn me off. For the same amount of money, I would go for Omega or Longines.

  • @ManoloVintage

    Now don't besmugde me on this... I like it a little bit but not enough to buy one. The crown is on the wrong side and too big for no reason. If the watch had a stopwatch complication and could be removable like a reverso then that would be cool. It doesn't even have a date or the famous B on the seconds hand. Never mind... I don't like it at all. The bezel will go out of style quickly. I just like the green and brushing on the case.

      @TheoandHarris  6 лет назад

      Hahahahah that has got to be the fastest opinion shift I've ever seen in my life. For the record, if they'd shrunk it, flip-flopped that crown, and not called it a Navi, I'd consider it a pretty functional field-type watch. Especially with that dial. Like a Swiss Made Seiko Alpinist.

    Look my friend, the brietling unfortunately want to be like omega when they made TONS of speedy editions , omega even have many limited speedy editions above that !.
    Brietling on other hand, wants the same move but they did it in disastrous way ! Every new watch release they market it under ( navitimer) ! Which makes the true navitimer ( 3 sub dials and busy dial ) from iconic piece to something has identity crisis IMO.

    It would be hypocritical to take offense to the history of this watch (timer for bomber runs) and not take also take issue with aviation/flieger watches as well. Although I do agree with the lack of a stopwatch feature, which would've helped this watch fit into the "Navitimer" family a better
    Christian, please stop asking us to "slam" the like button. It makes you sound like one of those pretentious teenage vloggers whose main source of income is RUclips/Patreon. I know you can come up with something better.
