    *The WORST Panerai Ever Made | RANT&H*
    In this episode, Christian dives into what he calls one of the "worst decisions ever made by any watchmaker...EVER."
    The Panerai in question is the reference 318 Luminor, released in 2011. This piece, known as the "Brooklyn Bridge," was a special edition for their New York boutique, but there was a bit of a problem - the movement, an ETA 6497, was not only undecorated but lacked any semblance of Panerai branding. At all. No, really.
    This movement wasn't just unbranded and undecorated, but it was also of the lowest grade conceivable. It featured a nickle balance, not particularly well designed for durability and longevity. And why did they do it? Well, nobody knows for sure, but it seems to us that they just assumed nobody would ever open a freaking caseback. To this day, Panerai has never issued an apology for this, although they did offer to replace the movement for those clients who felt the desire.

    We talk here about a brand which uses nowadays pressed in casebacks and gives a luminor a WR of 50m.
    I like their design but Panerai lost me couple of years ago. A pity though.
    The Brooklyn Desaster was in all watch forums than, I do remember it.
    Nice rant Christian 👍🏻🙏🏻

  • @carlhaluss

    Thanks for the great rant. Although I am a lover of Panerai, it is always good to hear all types of comments, good and bad. All three of mine do have in house movements, and even the 8 Days is incredibly accurate. However, in the future, if I ever do get a Panerai with a solid case back, I will wonder, think twice and will look.
    Such a shame. And I totally agree with your rant. Most watch manufacturers that I know, even those with watches costing a lot less, do some kind of modification to the non in house movements they put inside their watches. While I do think that decoration of a movement is basically not essential on a watch with a solid case back, there should be some identification of the brand on the movement, and there is a lot they can do to modify the movement with costing an awful lot, but making it more accurate and reliable. This, to me, was a total scam on behalf of Panerai. Judging by my own experiences lately, and reading the many blogs, it does seem that within the past couple of years, Panerai has vastly improved. Although, I must admit having seen, for example, watches on their website that show "sandwich" dials, on inspection at the Boutique I did find a couple of models that did not actual have that dial. Anyway, I could go on and on forever. While I will certainly not - I hope never - give up on Panerai, I do appreciate legitimate rants like yours. Thanks, Carl

    I’ve been a huge Panerai fan for years and own 6 models myself. I def agree that the lack of attention to the movement leaves something to be desired. But there are so many other fantastic PAM models out there that a consumer can choose from. Even though the movement isn’t the nicest looking, this NY Boutique release still sells well on the secondary. I don’t agree with every release the brand does, but I still love their rich military history and design elements, you can’t miss a Panerai when it’s on wrist.

      I agree with you. Big Panerai fan myself. My 562 is rated at 300M WR and is very accurate for an 8 day movement. My two Radiomir are extremely well built an accurate in house movements. My 720 is an amazingly historically correct model, and I just love it. I do agree with this rant for a few reasons, but one bad apple is not going to spoil my love for the brand.

    Hello from 2022, Panerai is closing the caseback again. Tried out a few models at an AD, latest offering from 2021/22 with closed case back somehow feels cheap to wind or adjust time, a lot of "play" when you rotate the crown forth and back if you know what I mean, and somehow even hacking second is missing...
    Then tried a model from 2019 with transparent case back, so much nicer crown action, smooth, responsive, the right amount of resistance, very predictable to adjust, well worth the money it asks for.
    NEVER buy a Panerai without a transparent caseback, you really need to see what you're getting

    Dude this is old news and actually these watches are very sought after in the secondary market for the same reasons you explained. Maybe you are just trying to catch up with all the brand issues raised by Perezcope in his blog, but content wise - to be ranting now about this topic just makes you as lazy as Panerai was back in 2011.

    Ok. You love the Datejust. But as I've been shopping the Datejust, everyone, comments that the Seamaster on my wrist is a better watch. That the Rolex is notorious for not keeping good time. One even said it's a luck of the draw to get a good one or a lemon.

    Sadly Panerai are not learning anything from their, shall we generously call them..... 'mistakes'. The latest Panerai chrono with, they claim, an in-house movement, in fact has an ETA movement with a Dubois Depraz chrono module. Nothing in-house about it at all, but apparently they have claimed that they 'consider it to be in-house' You'd be hard pressed to make this up, but apparently Panerai have infinite imagination!

    Good thing you were not living in New Orleans during the hurricane, or your nose up would have drowned you. I have rebuilt many watches and the 6497 is a mule of a work horse for many years of wear. My brother, the dentist, bought his wife a Rolex jewel bevel, and it NEVER kept great time. I own 3 Rolex and they bore me. This was a great make to allow people to own a name brand without the outrageous cost of branding costs. Get over yourselves. Time pieces are just that, time pieces. If you really want accuracy, buy a damn ELECTRIC watch.

    You asked the wrong question. It's unlikely this is the first time Panerai has cheated their customers. It's the first time they have been caught. Integrity, or lack thereof, means everything in business. The CEO should be held to account.

    • @algorithm007ify
      @algorithm007ify 5 лет назад

      The Panerai Luminor Due with 30m WR is a dress watch with panerai design cues..not a diver... People ALWAYS get this wrong. Panerai never said it was a diver..they market it as a dress watch!!!

    At least it has a 300m water resistance. Their watches now have a snap back case back with either 30m or 100m water resistance. Panerai shooting themselves in the foot time and time again.

    • @algorithm007ify
      @algorithm007ify 5 лет назад

      The Panerai Luminor Due is marketed as a DRESS WATCH with panerai design cues..nothing wrong with having 30m WR on a dress watch.. Even the Breitling Navitimer has 30m WR..and that is a SPORTS WATCH... This false criticism is just coming from hysterical rolex fangirls

      Well, they have BMGTech (kills steel in terms of hardness but is not more brittle), Tourbillions and other complications, a watch with 50 year service intervals (LAB-ID), ...some pretty good stuff I would say..compared to rolex at least.
