"Nostalgia has a powerful effect on the way we look at the past - it distorts and idealizes what we choose to remember. Embracing this gives us some latitude in how we analyze modern watches that are inspired by historic designs. When it comes to appreciating the original historic references, we're not always celebrating the specifics of a design, but rather the era of the watch. Take the Rolex "Paul Newman" Daytona, for instance. The dial legibility is terrible and the build quality of the vintage models compared to the modern models is decent at best. And yet, it's probably the most-referenced vintage watch since its record-breaking sale. The King of Cool made the watch. Oftentimes we buy into the story and not the watch. And that's not a bad thing, as many times the stories around watches are far more interesting than the watches themselves."
Such a cool way to show comparison using seconds hand! Also I love this watch. Past design is so much more classy than today’s oversized bling.
Great editing in this video giving the true nostalgia of the past and history, that I wasn't even a part of a a man in the 30s. Thank you Hodinkee.
Props to the editing team for that trailing seconds hand shot, and Cole for the writing
Crazy shot, and such a great idea
The video editing from 3:00 where the second hand reveals the vintage watch was amazingly satisfying 😍 great video!
Great job, Cole. Love the visual affect of that seconds counter, shifting between old and new!
Great video Cole. Thank you for not doing any corny skit like we have seen in other videos that you aren’t featured in...
Breitling really did hit a home run with various new models. This AVI does it good! Just like the Premier B09 they both have that vintage look that actually looks good for a modern watch! Love the finishing on both of them.
Oh, and the fact that Breitling announced their new collection while Watches and Wonders was going on but them not attending is priceless...
Cole, thanks for the thoughtful video. I loved the overlapping videos of the two. A very effective way to compare.
I own the Re-edition and noticed that the with the B09 movement, the chronograph minute counter jumps every 30 seconds. Rather than every minute.
It looked like maybe the vintage one did too, based on hand position. But it was difficult to tell for sure.
Could you confirm?
This is the sort of a week on the wrist I’d like to watch, much better than the previous one on the Rolex submariner.
Superb video, Cole. Testing different formats is understandable, and maybe necessary, but this is how I think the editorial direction should be on "A Week on the Wrist". All about the watch and with insightful information about the art of re-editions and the brand history. On point!
That velvety smooth voice...
I was thinking 💭 the same!!
On the very first AVI 765, produced in early to mid 1953 there was no "Geneve" on the dial, because Breitling moved in summer 1953 from La Chaux de Fond, and only after that move, they were alowed to print "Geneve" on the dial.
So this once are the "holy grail" out of the AVI watches, and the new one refers to this.

Looks at wrist
Sees breitling two tone chronomat from the 90s
still thinks it’s a cool watch
Interesting piece. Regards.
I kinda looooove breitling!
Great video but I feel these Week on the Wrist videos, which are my favorite Hodinkee content, are getting shorter and shorter.
Great video Cole.
Pure magic of a video for a watch enthusiast
Really good video. You can tell lots of intentionality and work went into this.
Amazing job at comparing the two. Well done!
They dropped the ball with this one. I love the design, but the price? $8200 and no sapphire crystal? An oversight in my opinion. I want to wear this at work in the cockpit but don’t want to scratch it up. The market is agreeing with me. Used these are going around $4500-$5500 today. The P51 Mustang has sapphire but is 42mm, too big for my taste. They need to offer sapphire as an option for this watch.
Longlines Big Eye has killed this
Brilliant sweep new/old .👏👏👏👏
I myself connected more with the release of the reference 806 1959 Navitimer so I bought it. But this is a great one also. Nice review.
They really should name this the "Ken Miles"
Really nice video ! Thanks 😊
Beautiful watch. Would exchange my 2001 Lemania Cosmo for this.
...That’s a damn good looking watch.
There's nothing faux about "fauxtina", it's just a color people like. They're not trying to pass off their watches as vintage, so it's not "faux".
It's clearly an imitation of faded vintage lume
@@lucioledizerot196 It's the same color. They chose this because people made it clear they liked this color. I don't have a problem with it because they're not trying to pass their watches off as vintage when they're not, that's really the key. They've merely adopted some of the asthetic aspects of vintage watches that the modern market has made clear that they like, that's all. That's fine. There's nothing fake about that.
@@LanguagesWithAndrew I think you're too hung up on the term "fauxtina". It mostly means "imitating patina" rather than "fake patina", I don't think anybody sees these watches as "fake" vintage, simply modern imitations
(and yes I know "faux" means "fake" but that's not how people really use it, it's just a catchy term)
@@lucioledizerot196 Ok, fair enough, but I will point out that the word, "faux", literally means "fake" (in French), which is why I took the stance I did.
Love this watch!
Nice watch, nice review, One thing regarding the intro of the video, isn't it the sound of a quartz watch?!!
Don't get me wrong, I love good quartz watches, but you people don't!
Love it. Hate that it is only 30m waterproof, ala Longines.
I agree. Lazy watchmaking if you ask me. A few years back they introduced the retro "Premier" model, which was also handwound and was water resistant to 10 Atm. I don't get it.
03:12 - Loving that shot!
I would go for the breguet Type 20. And go fast car discontinued and less and less pieces.
I just don't understand the $3000+ price premium over Tudor's new chronographs with the same movement. Tudor selling for at or above MSRP while Breitling is 20-30% off easy from AD.
Its like saying I don’t understand the 3000-4000 usd you pay more on Rolex than Tudor
@@longlivemetal1997 are you equating Rolex to Breitling?
I love this line and the Top Time Deus.
When you hear breitling, what comes to mind?
John Travolta and Slash
A good improvement on the last AWOTW Submariner video 👍
i like the original one with real patina, i like some faux patina also and re-editions, but this one doesn't quite work for me, not sure why
Wolverine’s brother is so into watches? Wow
A Breitling I can finally like. At least the look of until it breaks down.
Combien coûte cette magnifique montre aviator ?👍❤️🎩🎩
Could fall asleep to his voice 💤
Looks like a breguet chronograph
Research the Type XX and you'll see they look alike a lot... Also, the AVI 765 was issued before the Breguet Type XX.
It's missing like 5 lines of requisite text.
looks like they copied Breguet's type xx
Respektos
LOL, they got everything the same as the previous vintage model except the price :P
First!
Rehashing old designs is not exciting, it’s lazy. What is missing these days with the large luxury brands is new and fresh designs. If I want the past, I buy the past, not a pale pastiche as in this case!
Exactly!
This is a copy of Breguet Type XX I don't understand 🙋🏻♂️
The AVI 765 was issued in 1953 before the Breguet Type 20 (1955).
well the Breguet is obviously not one to one

Great video, but please stop calling these items a week on the wrist. It doesn't even come close to the insinuation of wearing it a week on the wrist, let alone creating a video about this experience and what you notice. Give it an different title and the complaining will stop or start wearing it for a week!
How is dropping GENEVE unavoidable? Puts it in the playful category for me.
I think it is because the company is in Grenchen, not Geneve. I don't know if the company was ever in Geneve, so it makes you think why the put that city's name on their dials in the first place; probably for marketing purposes.
@@amypeterson4615 OK fair enough then, back to the faithful re-issue category it goes.
