Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk2 1.8T - What's It Like To Drive? ON TRACK

- Thanks to Owen for letting me drive his car!
Mk2 Golf GTI is a car I remember fondly but rarely see anymore. Very rarely do you see one of these cars at the track, so I'm very grateful to the owner for trusting me to take it for a spin.

Was not expecting this, but delighted to see it all the same! 🇩🇪
That thing looked plenty fast even if you we're being careful with it! Love seeing cars like these being driven no matter what
Would be good to have a lap timer on screen since you do the same circuits often with different cars, be interesting to see how they stack up against each other
Also, maybe how hard you have to work for different chassis to make up the time.
My Mk2 20v is a handful, but it's rewarding when you get it right. Almost 400hp, Yet I'd say anyone in a stock EP3 could be faster than me around Cadwell within a day. For sure!
Ist verboten unfortunately
Hopefully see you at trackday , you can have a crack at my peugeot 205 kswapped ✌️
I've had 4 different MK2 gti's in the past. 3 8v and 1 16v, I always wanted one with the 2l ABF conversion. Had a MK2 Ibiza cupra with an ABF and it's such a wicked engine.
Ibiza ABF ftw!
What a cool car. Great video!
My dad had one of these when he was stationed in Germany I remember he haul ass everywhere in it.
Nicely turned out car, respectfully driven
nice to see you trying out a mk2 golf 1.8t conversion looked fast in a straight line they are fun on track once you get used to them 😲 the mk 2 iv'e got is powered by a 180 bhp abf it's really good fun on the road and on track 👌keep these type of videos coming danny 💪👍
Not a huge fan of them no
Cracking car, great noise from the thing too. Pity (but totally understandable) that these are so expensive/rare now especially down here in NZ. They look like a heap of fun!
Now that’s a cool car. I like the original style seat fabric on the Brides
Amazing - these 20vt engines have lots of potential for serious power! I own a VR6 swapped Mk2, just because of the noise ❤
oyeah, that's the best engine sound for me. There is a tuned 8V in my GTI and it sounds a bit like VR. But driving a VR6 in my MK2 Golf will remain a dream because of the rules in Austria. Only a 20% increase in performance as a series performance is permitted 😭
Looks well put together that
love the japan inspired styling good video. Mk2 always were one of my favourites
It looks so good.
I helped a friend build a 1.8t MK2 and later a Corrado. Really good fun to drive, especially on track - they take people by surprise! 🙂
yes they do 😉
nice and quick
Lovely car.
I remember when these were in the hot hatch fight, up against the xr2, xr3, nova Sr, astra gte, 205 gti, Renault 5 turbo, and several others. Cool cars at the time
DannyMk2
Imma stop driving cars now

First "legal" car was a mk2 1.3c possibly the most basic spec with all blue interior bar dash and centre console, was a proper shed like and if you slammed the door to hard you left golden rust on the floor lol
whats the end song from?
🔥🔥👍😎gti2❤️
YESSS! I was waiting to see you at a track day at Donny to let you rip in mine 😅 White 5 door, big brakes. GTX28.
Pedalbox is a strange layout. I also heel and toe off the side of my foot. And the throttle pedal flat out touches the inner wheel arch! 😅
Cool cars
pulling hard from down low XD
Bit confusing why it has VR6 written all over then has a 20v turbo though
was originally a VR6
I had a mk2 driver 1.6 with a gti kit on and ronald turbo alloys it looked mint I miss the old girl then I got a mk3 gti 2.0 8v then a mk5 gti edition 30 now I drive a Audi 😢😂
I get the impression, Do You @DannyDC2 not like AR1s? what do others think? I like them in the winter (they are soft and warm up fast), but I have not yet tried them in the summer. ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Not a huge fan
They can be fussy about pressures - but £ for £ (especially in smaller sizes) I don’t know what comes close for a road legal tyre tbh. I’ve even used them in a thunderstorm at brands and they still gripped. Also never driven a car that hasn’t overheated something else before a set of AR1s
@@markythegreat you should try Yokohama A052 or AD09 for something better. I find AR1 really inconsistent and they are a funny price
Cheaper than the premium stuff, but more expensive than the cheap stuff. So mid range? But you only get a few heat cycles out of them until they are done.
They are a tyre that barely has any tread but you'll be throwing them away before they're spent due to the lack of grip
I'd choose something like an Accelera over them if I was on a budget
how tall are you Danny, you never look that tall on camera but you do seem to be taller than alot of people you stand next to
5ft 7.5
@@dannyDC2 not tall then, you must just have long legs boyo.. that or the golfs owner is 4ft 2? lol
@@dannyDC2 .5 makes all the difference
Why is reverse there 🤔
To go backwards
Get a Clio mk3 on the Chanel you will like them - and compare it to ep3
I am tempted to let him rag mine. I hang out at Oulton pk, Blyton park and Anglesey.
That’s some spread
Gran turismo music? ~1m?
Zee Germans are coming!!!
This doesn't look like a Honda o.o
diesel rev gauge lol
Does say it used to have a VR6 guess thaats why the rev counter looks wrong
my least favourite track. How do you like it?
Dan has been pretty open about his love for Cadwell... Most think it's a great track so you might be in the minority
Have you driven it ?
It’s one of the best
Best track in the country!
I had a 2 door 8v in atlas grey when. I was like 22 or something. One of the best cars I ever had. Gutted I ever got rid of it.
Love a mk2 golf ❤
I’ve messaged you on insta about driving the cayman 👍
