If this is the new direction of CT, then I am very happy to see more of this detailed mechanical work! I'm very impressed with Edwin and Jack's knowledge.
Edwin and Jack together are so natural. Also, love the more greasy videos... as someone who longs to be able to do these kinds of things, but having neither the budget, nor the space, it's great to be able to live through others :) Keep it up, you're knocking it out the park :)
In that case, you may enjoy Derek's content in #ViceGripGarage. One of his main bits is finding great old cars and getting them running. Amazing content.
I’m so happy your not just buying cars and doing “challenges” your actually working on car and getting involved. Loved this video guys, please please please more of this kinda content.
The best vid you’ve done for a long while. Great content, great car and great spec. Edwin clearly knows his stuff too. Looking forward to the next episode.
Great video, absolutely the right content! Hoping for a series on the Golf restoration. Three really is the sweetspot for car show presenters and Edwin should definitely be a regular, great team chemistry.
I'm begging, please continue this series. I've wanted a mk1 since I was 13 and would love to see the work that goes into restoring an old beauty like this
The single best looking golf of them all imo. I remember when i was younger and i would do the newspaper run for a bit of income, i would always pass by some guy who owned a red Mk 2 GTI in absolutely mint condition. You could tell the guy really cared about it
finally car throttle has bought a cool car, i may be bias though, i have a mk2 (first car) just a 1.3 4dr but i love the thing, i have the same type 19 gti interior in mine, looking forward to seeing what you do with it, id say a bbs body kit would look mint on it
This was VERY entertaining, as I own a red MK5 GTI and back in the days when this poor car sat in a garage, my dad owned a red MK2 1.6 petrol, so this is quite special! He sold the red MK2 in 2008 and found it on the streets still running half a year ago! These cars are invincible. Cant wait to see the progress, this car deserves to live again.
As much as what came after it was upsetting, the jump cuts showing every bolt in the head coming undone is one of the most satisfying things I've seen on YT.
My first car I ever had was an '84 GTI, but the 4 door. It was my 18th birthday present from my parents, in 2003. It had over 330,000km but was in exceptionally good condition and drove beautifully. I absolutely adored it! Sadly, it was stolen after about a year and I never saw it again. So this model GTI is very special to me 😊
The early ones are the better looking ones. My old white one was in a slightly better state than this one when I started on it. By the time I'd finished it, I'd ditched the 8v for a 3.2 24v.. would recommend! 😂 Now a happy Rallye owner. If you need any advice, contacts for parts or anything feel free to reach out.
About a month ago I saved an 86 Gti that had been under a shed since 2001. Im the 2nd owner. Luckily the previous owner was an older lady. Im 100% confident the only reason I was able to save it and get it back to being road worthy was the fact that it sat for 20 years and wasnt owned by my 17 year old self.
I can't believe we are finally getting a mk2 golf video. Fixing up my dad's old 1988 mk2. This is the video I have always wanted from you guys. Keep up the good work!
Rebuilding this engine would cost way more than sourcing another one. This engine is so fucked it might be beyond saving regardless of cost as there could be cracks inside the block. The best outcome for it is a coffee table at this point.
Gotta be honest I'm in Canada so idk for certain but for us the cheap but still proper fix is sliding a mk3 8v block under a counterflow 8v head. No wiring, not much messing about, and the full kit (breather block off, distributor gear, stainless downpipe, and short shifter) is like $400 USD (so £325). Usually bumps the power up to 16v levels but with more torque. Of course as the name suggests I may be a touch biased and you've probably already chosen a 1.8t, and that is the better way to go if you have the budget for it, but the period poverty spec power always deserves a shout out.
Even though it's a bummer about the engine, at least now you's get to build up a cool car from essentially a clear slate. Working on and restoring an old car is an equally fun side of being an enthusiast especially if it includes upgrades because your making it your own version of the car from the start instead of waiting for something to wear out or break before making changes, upgrades and tuning. Keen to see where the series goes, a rally or lifted style for green laning be sick!
Love it! Had a MK2 Golf GTI 8v as my 3rd car at 19, loved it up until the next MOT when it was deemed as uneconomical to repair due to the whole chassis being extra lightweight due to the rust... Would love to see a 1.8T BAM Conversion! Keep up the great content lads!
16:00 Solution to that and what me and my buddies do: Even before pulling the engine out we buy 1-2 liter of cold degreeser, spray it from above and under, let is soak for a good 5-10 minutes. Use high pressure washer or even better a steam pressure washer. As much as we like getting our hands dirty, it is so much better to work with cleaner parts, plus we might not stink by the end of the day ... That much 😅
I feel like the direction of the show has felt a little lost lately. This was a really refreshing turn around. Love the idea, and as many others have said keep Edwin on! Looking forward to the next video!
My first car was also a mk2 Golf (in fact i still have it), but only with a 1.3 engine and 4speed gearbox. It's nice to see that people give the mk2 the appreciation it deserves. In my opinion the smaller bumper looks way better. Also pls do not swap the engine to something that's not original, stock mk2s are way better. Also loving the wheels and the interior.
Love that you are saving this car. It’s unmolested & rust free. Ok, needs new engine or complete rebuild, but what a lovely car it could be. As for small bumper, I’ve had both. 16v jade green, F465TNP, biggest regret selling that car, is it still out there? No history for around 15 years! And a big bumper 8 valve roll out model. Always preferred the small bumper model. Looking forward to seeing the progress on this.
My all time dream car. My mum owned one a long time ago in silver. We had it for a few months and then it needed a new timing belt and my brother knows how to fix cars but he changed the belt for a new one and put it on too tight and blew the engine up. Unfortunately replacement engines at the time mid 2000's cost more than the car was worth and was going to be mine when I turned 17
/M/p//$/w/s/ /p/s/ /c/p/ /L/r/m/ WereInvolved in me being drugged raped and cut me at the Swinton dental anaesthetic clinic and They murdered a person there
I had a C-reg 5-door GTI, pretty much same spec, 8-valve, P-wheels, skinny bumpers, same candy-stripe seats, same colour, same hand-wind sunroof, same rust. My first "quick" car that I used to blat around the country. Great on motorways or country B-roads, just a bit heavy on the steering. Classic weepy head gaskets meant the block always had a sheen of rust-protection (oil).
I had a red one of these, 8 valve GTI same year. It was my first car in '97. The steering was awful, it overheated, the electrics were a mess, I loved it.
This is the content that people want! Bringing one of the best hot hatches back to life. As the matching engine needs to go in the bin why not change it for something with nore power? So many easy engine options. With a VR6/R32 or 1.8t and a decent G60 brake setup and you'll have a laugh with it! A nicely tuned VR6 sounds absolutely epic so thats what I would do!
Now this is the kind of content i LOVE, especially a mk2 golf, Keep it coming lads always love the uploads
I agree 👌
I would have assaulted that engine with an industrial size barrel of D-germ
Totally really in for the long haul on this
Now if we could see more progress on there Turbo Volvo
@@Stevie242 yes, had forgotten about that bad boy swede
If this is the new direction of CT, then I am very happy to see more of this detailed mechanical work! I'm very impressed with Edwin and Jack's knowledge.
Good god, that engine is well and truly cooked. Love seeing Edwin presenting!
Yep, Edwin could be the magic ingredient in a new Car Throttle trio.
he is better than ethan
Yeah not as energetic as Alex but the trio needs to be a trio
The oil on the outside of the engine looked better than whatever was inside. That's pretty amazing.
Edwin is a natural, loved this episode! Keep it up boys!
Hope you can save the engine but it looks too far gone. Edwin is a welcome addition to the team. Looking forward to the rest of the restoration.
Nah bro these things are bulletproof
Wasn't too sure about Edwin taking a regular presenting role but after this episode I'm sold!
Off course it looks good underneath. With all the oil leaking out of the engine it has been preserved perfectly 😁
Edwin and Jack together are so natural. Also, love the more greasy videos... as someone who longs to be able to do these kinds of things, but having neither the budget, nor the space, it's great to be able to live through others :)
Keep it up, you're knocking it out the park :)

Smaller bumper just looks better in every single way
person of culture
@John Chami thank you sir
absolutely!
Are you kidding me? G60 bumpers looks so much better
I like the small bumpers on the earlier ones with split front windows and the g60 on the facelift personally
I’m so happy your not just buying cars and doing “challenges” your actually working on car and getting involved. Loved this video guys, please please please more of this kinda content.
fingers crossed the engine is ok !! content like this is always 🔥🔥
stop making your website worse youtube
Any chance you can get rid of the idiot pretending to be car throttle? It's a scam
blud the engine is NOT ok 💀💀🔥🔥
Bring back dislikes you spineless cowards!
the engine is the opposite of ok 😂
Edwin is my favourite! Legit had me cracking up at "turn it up, oh I love this one" and his nerdy knowledge is next level!
would love to see this car actually done properly, awesome buy from Edwin
This is just what this channel needed! Keep it up lads!
Glad you lads have kept at it, really enjoying the new format and a genuine bunch of guys getting hands dirty........looking forward to more like this
The best vid you’ve done for a long while. Great content, great car and great spec. Edwin clearly knows his stuff too. Looking forward to the next episode.
really enjoy seeing edwin on camera. also fantastic choice of car!!!!
Loving seeing Edwin take on a more active role. He’s also clearly very knowledgeable and patient with Ethan 😂
Ethan is like the apprentice no one wants 😂
isn't that every apprentice
Apprentice? Them two can't even hold a candle to Ethan, the all mighty mechanical monster machine😂
I do 🥺
That’s the whole pint of the word apprentice shuthead
He's just acting
Edwin’s a natural! Hope he’s on camera more often. Total legend!
Nice to see you boys
Great video, absolutely the right content! Hoping for a series on the Golf restoration. Three really is the sweetspot for car show presenters and Edwin should definitely be a regular, great team chemistry.
Love it! I had a 1989 1.6 carb now have a 1991 1.8t swapped MK2 golf. 237bhp and the turbo noises are the best! Definitely the way you should go!
I had a type 19 1.8t also ko4 270hp it was insane that's the most power a road going mk2 needs
Edwin is great! Good to see you having a real project, keep it alive!
I love this kind of content! Such a cool little car. I hope it gets to live.
Fantastic content, and Edwin is a really complementary addition to the team. Cant wait to see what you do!
2.0 16v abf engine would look nice in the mk2👌🏼
I'm begging, please continue this series. I've wanted a mk1 since I was 13 and would love to see the work that goes into restoring an old beauty like this
Great video. This channel has really hit its stride with the new presenting team. Looking forward to part two.
Loving it. These are the best of the videos- no stupid messing about - fixing up a fine old car with three engaging and funny blokes.
I haven't laughed this much with a RUclips video like this in a long time. What an amazing team you guys got :)
The single best looking golf of them all imo. I remember when i was younger and i would do the newspaper run for a bit of income, i would always pass by some guy who owned a red Mk 2 GTI in absolutely mint condition. You could tell the guy really cared about it

This can take over auto-Alex any day with content like this
This is brilliant, can't wait until the next ep. Nice one lad's & Ethan!
Is Ethan not a lad? 😂
This was VERY entertaining, as I own a red MK5 GTI and back in the days when this poor car sat in a garage, my dad owned a red MK2 1.6 petrol, so this is quite special! Love Edwin on camera and these semi diy type projects keep it coming ❤
A Mrk 1 Golf is genuinely my dream car and when you finally get this beauty going properly, I bet it will be amazing! A great video lads, keep it up 👍
Owning a mk2 golf driver myself and working on a 16v gti and a g60 rallye at work, this is fun to watch
You are lucky guy
As much as what came after it was upsetting, the jump cuts showing every bolt in the head coming undone is one of the most satisfying things I've seen on YT.
Looks great. Definitely deserves a new engine either original or 1.8T

Absolutely love car revival videos, you guys should do more of these in the future for sure!

Your old one .... was in a worst state than this one when I first bought it 10 years ago.
@@AKAeddypeck I think between us the amount of work was probably on par with what the one in this vid needs 😆

Could this fit a VR6?? That'd be wild...
Ther are a few with vr6 swaps
Could it fit a W12 🤔
Was thinking the same, would sound magical🙌🏼
I can't believe we are finally getting a mk2 golf video. Fixing up my dad's old 1988 mk2. This is the video I have always wanted from you guys. Keep up the good work!
Looking forward to part 2 👍
Just coming back to this video, what a brilliant series this was.
I don't know if a replacement engine would set you back more than a rebuild of this one but I would attempt the rebuild just because
Rebuilding this engine would cost way more than sourcing another one.

That’s a nice find. Must be low mileage parked up for 2 decades.
Doesn't mean much if the Engine is cooked lol
I mean, the car was registered in 1985, so it was 17 year old when it was parked up... it had plenty of time to rack up miles.
Engines fucked tho
You know where we are guys 😉 Happy to help! Love a barn find!
Where did his neck go?
