I've had an EV6 GT for a fortnight now (first one at my local dealer). Previously I was driving a Porsche 997. The KIA EV GT is simply astonishing. It's bonkers fast when you want it to be, handles brilliantly despite the weight (which you really don't feel due to the adaptive suspension), but is equally good if you slip it into ECO mode at cruising or crawling (silently) through traffic. It's also beautifully built inside, properly as good as Audi or BMW.
I'm really glad I waited to get an EV, because I suspect I might have been disappointed with earlier cars. This however is the real deal. Most impressive is the obvious care that has gone into engineering this. The European manufacturers need to be very worried about KIA and Hyundai if this is what their engineers can produce. You can tell that KIA have let the real 'car guys' to have their way on this car and it shows.
I came across someone driving a Guilia QF the other day, a car I really lusted after at one time. Now my only thought was 'what's the point of cars like that anymore?' I took my 997 out the other day, expecting to have missed it, and to be honest, it was a bit underwhelming after the EV6!
    It's that good.

Agree completely. I bought one a week and a half ago and love it. I have owned performance BMWs for the past 30 years and I had an order in for an i4 M50, which is a great car but… I ordered the i4 last summer, it is still nowhere near production and I got tired of waiting. Saw the EV6 GT on the showroom floor, took a test drive and that was that. The car has amazing tech, crazy acceleration, outstanding build quality and sleek good looks. I love the Recaro-like bucket seats. I’m also getting a little better range projection than stated. The best part is saving many thousands of dollars versus the BMW and I don’t feel like I have given up anything except the badge. In many ways, I prefer the EV 6 - better frontal visibility, better HUD, better cockpit (for me), better warranty, faster charging…this car is an accomplishment.

@@09237462616364727 it’s metallic black Eric. The EV6 has real road presence. As well as the BAC Mono and 997 I also have an original (non PAS) NSX so I appreciate cars that handle well. The EV6 GT can hold its own amongst those cars which is an amazing achievement for KIA. Despite being heavy like most EVs having the weight low down and central is a massive head start to get good handling.
I also like the fact that it has the practicality of a mid sized SUV but isn’t too tall (or too long like a Taycan)
It’s also a bit alternative being a KIA which appeals to me.

But being an EV6 owner myself, with just the humble rearwheel drive, I can confirm that even that is a pleasure to drive on twisty mountain roads (test performed in Provence), so I can only imagine how brilliant this car must be! And yes, I might be tempted to at rent this GT for a long weekend of fun! - and to all the comments about the price: just look at the price difference for e.g. the Golf GTI compared to a normal Golf, I believe it is not dissimilar! This is not a car for the masses, but for those who want to have that sort of fun, while being able to transport their family too! ;-)

In our EVs that adjust range estimate based on recent driving, we can have up to a 100% difference in range estimates. In our old BMW i3, when she would drive it for a while, it would say 50 miles of range when charged to 100%. When I'd drive it more conservatively, I could get it to read over 100 miles. Brilliant review. Thank you. Absolutely love this car (might have even ordered one) and you’ve picked out some of the key points that make it so attractive to a middle-aged dad who also loves driving and Scottish highland roads.
Current car is mapped Skoda superb which combines the same elements of ludicrous practicality and comfort with a secret dose of madness when the family has been left at home.
The GT offers the same engagement (the flappy paddles for regen are a work of genius for the driver who wants engagement) and then takes it to another level of insanity (errr excitement).
For me, that makes this car a no brainer entry into the world of EV for someone who is not concerned about the badge but wants a grin on their face.
I’ve been a little anxious about range figures (remember I mentioned the highlands?) but you seem to have confirmed my suspicions. 200 or so when put through its paces, but nearer 250 when talked down a little. What’s not to like? Only the wait time for delivery :)

Nothing in that car is worth the additional 43k €. Although electricity's cheaper than gas, I'd still be looking at roughly 30 years of usage and maintenance for the corolla until I'd reach price parity with this Kia; and then that same Kia would be 30 years old and in need of constant maintenance / new battery over the years as well. I drive a Kia Stinger and this is the first EV car that I would realistically consider and that I can afford. All the qualities and needs that I looked for and love about my Stinger is also in this car. The only thing that is a big minus for me is the lack of a front trunk space unlike some other EV cars on the market and for a bespoke EV platform, I think that is a big oversight. I would love to be able to store small loose items that always stay in the car as well as charging cables and accesories in the front trunk and keep the back trunk empty for larger items and looking clean and tidy.

The EV race is going to give a lot of manufacturers the opportunity to finally jump ahead of very well known brands. Kia/Hyundai have had great innovations within the past 5-7 years, including their new Genesis brand. However, they could not compete in terms of power to the big dogs since their engine uses very old tech, so even though it had the raw horsepower, it was very fuel inefficient. Kia/Hyundai also did not have the best transmissions to handle loads of power. The DCT in the Veloster N and Elantra N are more recent and even those cannot handle 400hp+ very easily. The EV game flattens the playing field a lot more. Power? Electric motor. No problem. Transmissions? Single speed, maybe 2 speeds, done. Fuel economy? Electric. That's it. I've always loved Kia/Hyundai designs and technologies. I just never liked how slow their cars were to the competition. Now with the EV6 GT, we're talking a $75k car competing with cars in the $200-$500k price range even.

I'm old school, so the direction that the Kia EV6 GT is taking, to me, goes against environmental responsibility.
How is unlocking performance abilities to do donuts (smoking tyres), an environmental positive?
The asking price is higher than the standard versions which already have more power than "necessary".
The reality is that the approaching future battery resources limitations will being magnified, not diverted with cars of this ridiculous performance level being promoted.
    Fire away. 😉

    • @harry-eto
      @harry-eto Год назад

It is still much more responsible than any high-power-ice car. You can't tell the market what to buy unless you would be Steve Job's ghost.
Until then, giving an electric alternative is the way to go and does not really correlate with "battery ressources limitations"

I was amazed that the tech in this AU$28k Kia was almost as good as that in the EV6 (it even LOOKED the same / similar!). Only downside was the severe lack of power (someone with a ford ranger, towing a large caravan) passed us on a freeway going UPHILL - and we were flat to the floor at the time !!! The poor little thing was revving its guts out :-(

Such an insanely awesome car, and kudos to Kia for sticking to their guns with the design and tech! I just with they'd chosen a different hero colour for the GT model launch...more often than not that's the colour people will associate with the car, and they've already launched the lower specs with the same colour months ago! The matte grey is great don't get me wrong, but your 600hp halo car really should look a little more unique don't ya think?

Now that would definitely grab some attention in the right way I'd reckon. People will see this crazy Bright green car flogging supercars online and then they'll be more likely to head down to a dealer and buy it in a normal colour. Seems pretty basic to me from a marketing/appeal standpoint, but maybe KIA is going for the whole understated Q Car look.

We in the UK can't even buy the GT in anything other than black or white now they removed the Matt Steel Grey in the middle of last year, just around the time they made it available to order. Luckily, I just managed to get hold of a cancelled early order in steel grey which makes it the rarest of the rare EV6's in the UK, hopefully, should be picking it up in a week or two when it gets off the boat from S. Korea 🙂 but why the heck we can't have the same extended colour range as the U.S. I don't know.
