As an owner of an '85 Iroc Z28 for 20 years now , I have to agree with your comment of do it yourself wherever possible. If the passion for the car is there , so will be the determination to succeed in any project you undertake.
Nice car you have there , keep the heart beating :-))
Anyone want to see an updated video for 2014? Plenty has changed!
Yes.
yes and i did have a few questions !!
Kevin Kelly How much did I cost to repaint this car? How many quarts of paints were needed to do the job? Please. Just brought 86 Trans Am, so I need info. OEM paint is gone on mine. Thank you for any help.
Hell yes. Im just beginning a 86 Z28 clone project. my son got the car for me for nothing so I thought i would build it too look just like my 86 Z28 i had back in my hell raising days. You know, the mid life crisis/toy project. Haha.
As an iroc lover this is the greatest video ive ever seen in my life.
Gorgeous IROC. Possibly the cleanest upgrades that I have seen. Great taste.
Hey Bro, Don't rule out crank mods! lower end power makes all the difference! using a stroker crank & custom length rods!!! my experience is in a 73 sb 400 using stroker crank on a 4.125bore 73 sb400 bored .030 over, amber lightweight pistons 11/1 compression, aluminum heads, roller rockers, holley 750 dbl pumper w/manual secondaries, th400 w/ new valve body & B & M shift kit, 3,500 stall, 373 gears, in a 79 Z-28! IT SCREAMED!!!! I AM IN LOVE WITH A STROKER 406!!!!
Very true statement. Thanks for your comment!
Ok I want to see an update video. Looks and sounds freakin amazing and it's so clean! That tint with the victory red just.... so good.
*THIS GUY SEEMS LIKE A DOWN TO EARTH NICE KID*
Awesome camaro dude, I'm trying to buy an 87 right now and i'd love to steal that exhaust setup.
I have an 84 camaro that I'm restoring, gonna paint it plumb crazy and drop a 350 bored 60 over in it that may dad used in his racecar. Hopefully it'll look as good as yours. Very nice car.
That is a Grant GT steering wheel. It's pretty popular among Foxes/Camaros of this era. The stock steering wheel is a monster!
this car is beautiful hopefully when I'm done mine it looks and runs this nice
Good advice on that last bit of the video. Got a 1986 camaro and im learning all this stuff from scratch! Anyway nice car man looks great!
Thanks man, really appreciate that! The only time I let anyone do anything to it is when it goes in for inspection, the rest I do myself or with my buddy Josh. The only real way to learn is to do it yourself.
@anythingthatgoes The strut tower brace was on the car when I got it actually. I have removed it before to drive it, specifically when I did the engine swap. The car didn't feel as tight and almost wanted to wander a bit. It's a very worthwhile upgrade to firm up the front of these cars.
@camarocomputer Keep in mind this car has 6 gears - 2 overdrive gears since 4th is 1:1. On the highway at 65mph this car runs at 1700rpm's with the 4.10's. If you had any higher gearing, you'd have to cruise in 5th unless you wanted to speed constantly.
Very nice video man! I like how you covered every area. I love the Victory Red too!
I really appreciate your comment - thank you!
This is a dream car i wanna turn my 86 IROC into this some day i kinda got it planned out motor next year the rebuild trans with shift kit and get a locker or a 4.10 rear end your car is amazing
Great car. Much respect. That's right about how I want mine but 350ci and a definite 350-370 hp.. I love the sound of your car has a nice tone with a mean growl.
I'll make sure to post a video in response to this of my built 355 in my 88 Camaro. It's my first build as well, and I think I should be able to get a solid 450 @ the flywheel out of it (not that HP necessarily depicts speed, but you get the idea). Lots of high dollar parts, but I'm stopping there until I get my suspension worked out. I've already started with front and rear springs along with drag shocks up front and adjustables out back. Should be a nice runner for sure.
@GCxRenegade From what you have described, I wouldn't hesitate one moment to snag the IROC instead and swap what you can into it. You'll be able to recoop some money with leftover parts to sell as well. Seems like a win-win to me. You'll also be able to start from scratch basically, take your time and do things right, and you won't have to worry as much about trying to keep up with repairs on a 25 year old daily driver.
do you think the rear end of a 4th gen camaro / firebird will fit on a 3rd gen? i really want to get a newer rear end with disc brakes.
@Unique88maro I see no reason why it wouldn't - the suspension on this is just stock height - no issues. Just had to create a custom crossmember. There are crossmembers that have been made specifically for this purpose that you can buy as well.
@ic3man0 I do all my own work as well. In the build of the engine - probably around $3000 (includes machineshop work (honing, decking, boring, etc), T56 was $1500 for the entire swap, rear has around $700 in it. Other suspension parts total out to about $500 or so. Probably another $1000 in misc items.
Nice car. Love the flow masters, had the same ones on my truck probably always have them.
Beautiful car and property
super nice Iroc man looks good
Woooo!! very nice car dude thanks alot for making the video! this gives me some good ideas for my 89
what a supernice camaro. i've seen the other videos of it andd it's awesome. just one little detail, what i would change. the wheels looks smoother, when the balance weights are glued only on the inside of the rim.
greetings from pernickety germany ;)
great sounding car bro
I have both a '86 Monte Carlo and Camaro, both in black with carbureted 350s
@acquiesce1993 From what I hear, the stock heads can flow pretty well. If I were to try to get 350hp (at the engine) out of it, I'd grab some Hedman longtubes, a ported throttlebody, nice fresh air intake, ported plenum runners, and a nice healthy cam with a good amount of duration and lift. After you do all that, take your car to a reputible tuner in your area that can tune the ECU to match the addition of your new items. That should get you in the neighborhood in my opinion.
It's all in how lucky you get with the OEM block cylinder wall thickness lottery. I've been burned by a .060 over block before. Cracked bore after first drive around the block.
The car no longer has A/C, but it does have heat. You'll notice by the firewall in the video that there is a big black box on the passenger side. That is the blower motor box for the heat. I know what you mean about not being able to see the engine - the 70s/80s were known for smog/emissions control equipment that choked power and really clogged up the engine bay. You'll have to do some research into smog/emissions delete items that you can add. I
Oh just watched it again my bad beautiful car
great video and sweet car. Can't wait till I get one.
@FalloutMan493 Unfortunately, you would not be able to use this cam with your 1992. If your 350 is stock to the car, you have a roller cam and would need to use a roller cam. The XE274 is a hydraulic flat tappet cam. Nothing is stopping you from grabbing a roller cam though and putting it in, just make sure you have enough spring on your valves to suppor the added lift.
Nice IROC.
Thanks man!
You seem really knowledgable and nice, I love the car, and the sound but idk about that sound in an iroc! To muscly, for my tastes in an iroc!
Great video. My son has a same-color IROC and a regular Z28 and does all the work himself. Like you, he goes to bed knowing everything was done right. Plus, you save a TON of money. Quick question - how much ground clearance do you have below the mufflers? These cars are so tricky to get dual exhaust on because of the lack of space.
@HansenRacin I had an excel spreadsheet I made last year that I made with timing/vacuum/rpm. When I find it I'll let you know.
hey, I like the sound of the cam you have in there. I have a 92 z 28 with a 350 and I was curious if you can keep the stock heads or need to modify anything to slip that cam in.
Beautiful car. I've seen you on TGO, now I can connect a car to it!
ya that set up on the rear end should all be stock with disk brakes on the back
@ybafool2 You betcha, it's sweet! And thanks!
About your breaks you cant just swap the drums for disks. Im pretty sure you have to replace your Master for a 4 wheel disk set up.. Im not sure of this but I would make sure before you get in to deep. GL!!
is that a rear end from a 4th gen
Nice car!
awesome video bro
@acman131 I'll let you know when I finally make it to the 1/4, haha. No close tracks around here. Runs 8.29 @ 85.2 in the 1/8th, tho.
Yup
love the car..where do you get the poly trans mounts?
and how much work and money does it cost to get the 6 speed in...
love the car...thanks for the vid....please show me the numbers and the stats when you get the 400 in....i want to go with the mild 406 hot rod build...430hp and 530 ft lbs all below 5500....would make a fun nice calm street ..light weight camaro....love the vids...keep em coming...thanks
I watch your videos all the time because that thing sounds awesome!! :)
How loud is in the car? Can you normally talk with the passenger or listen the radio?
I'll have new 350 TPI crate engine for my GTA and I will put true duals...
Sweet bro
@camarocomputer You know he's got a T56 transmission, right? That's 6 gears to go through.. 410's are fine with a 6 speed, albeit first gear will probably be a bit short.
@xtra1234 Appreciate it!
Doesn't drone at all really. I also have some sound deadening material laid down back where the mufflers are.
Hey nice car brother. I just bought a 1989 Camaro 305 automatic TBI. My question to you is this; how do you go about putting long tube headers considering there is no cut out in the body like on the right side of the car? My car has the factory exhaust, so what I noticed is th pipes coming down the right side, and there is a cut out on the right side of the car, but not the left, so how then would I accomodate long tube headers. Thanks for any help you could give me.
really bad ass iroc-z i like it enjoy it
Did you have to modify anything to fit the t56 in? Also, how are you able to pass a smog check?
So im probably gunna put headers on my 89 iroc next.. you said you saw good gains from that, and i already have 3 inch exhaust going out to the tail pipes lol.
Did you notice good handling improvement from that strut tower cross bar ?
Dude your car sounds amazing! Honestly I'm a Mustang fanatic to the bone but I have decided that I want to try out on a Camaro now, therefore I'm buying a 95 z28 in the next couple of weeks. First thing I need to do is throw new tires all around. What would you recommend me when still having stock wheels, also when swapping the exhaust. I want that muscle car sound but nothing tooooo loud. Let me know! Thanks you!!!
well done my man well done... and the fact that you rather do it yourself and learn in the process instead of letting bums who could careless touch your Maro lets me know you are for real.
@broseph52 Thanks! If you ever have questions, I can sure try and help. I'm no expert - I've just gained knowledge through experience.
Right now I'm driving an '07 Mazda 3. I'm thinking if giving that back to my parents and finally buying my own car. I'm 21 and in college. What do you think of an IROC as a day driver? I'd love to see what an '86 or '87 can teach me, but I'm not sure it's practical. Any thoughts?
what kind of headers do you have? I have a '86 Z28 with shortys. I want long tubes but don't know how to make them fit
did the rear end hold up? I broke mine 5 times before I put a Ford 9" in it. I'm putting down about 400 to the wheels with a n2o shot.
I have an 86 IROC im working on right now, cars in perfect shape, only 90,000 KMs on it ( im from canada ) Im trying to put toether a parts list, and im just wondering what all of this cost you, I will of course be doing my own work.
thanks!
Months ago I bought an 87 LT. It was converted from 305 V6 to 350 V8. I only paid $600 for it and intended to fix it up over time. It's not really drivable now and seems like the more money I spend, the more that goes wrong with it. I found an 86 T-Top IRoc for $1000. It's in much better shape than my LT, just needs an Engine. I was thinking of buying it, taking my LT's Engine, cleaning it, fixing any faults, and just moving it and any needed parts to the IRoc. What's your opinion of this idea?
my car sounds like that ....big 270 or 280 cam....but sat for a while and now idles very badly and has to idle high or die.......help.......355 30 over.....10 to 1 with big cam holley 650....headers....how do i get to idle nice like yours.....did when first put engine and trans and everything was new....i am guessing carb rebuild...any info helps...thanks for all the info on the rear end...you are great ...thanks
Badass car man! Do your mufflers ever scrape?
What do you do for a fan. Looks like you don't run a fan off your water pump..?
How did you run your duals? And do you have the stock thorqe arm or is it aftermarket?
@85ChevyMonteCarloSS Don't skimp out on cheap parts number one. Get quality stuff. Things like rod bolts, head bolts, and really any other engine bolt - go with ARP. You don't want to mess around with cheaper stuff on a rotating assembling that spins 6k+ rpms under massive stress. Go as big on the engine as possible - more cubes, more compression, more power. Consider a 4 bolt 350 block punched over .060, then throw a 400 crank in it for a 390cu or so engine. Bigger is better. =)
Hey curious with that camshaft in there what vaccum do u pull at 1000 rpm's that would be a huge help!
That is a goo looking 3rd I have a 91 5 speed how hard was it to put in the t56 my new motor is to strong for the t5 that I have and I have a 9bolt aussie with disk brakes on it I plan to install and what is you duration it sounds great..
@plasmeh Thanks man. I was also wondering, would you happen to know a good way for me to figure out about my Engine? All I know is that it's a 350 V8 Small Block and it's a 1978 Engine. My fiance's dad (who has done work on the car for me) says it's actually a Racing Engine. I would like for that to be true (lol) but I really don't know. I would prefer detailed info on what my Engine is really about, you know?
love it bro, just bad ass!!!, I swapped mine from the 9 bolt to the ten bolt rear disc and swapped up gear ratio from the 3.27 to 3.73 well I love the launch but top end now sucks bad, I need a 6 speed now in it also, dude Just bad as what you did with yours I love it!!
Kevin Kelly quick question
KEVIN, U ASKED ABOUT MORE POWER, 400 CRANK!!! 383 STROKER OR, ADD A TURBO(ADD MORE RING GAP 1ST)
@cbr900rr919 It's perfectly safe to go .060 over on a 350. It's all in how it's built.
@plasmeh Holy shit! How'd you pull off a t56 swap for $1500?? I havent done mine yet but I have priced it out to $2000 and thats all stock parts!!
Nice video I have an 86 I just bought and I'm gonna start working on it soon any tips its an lb9
oh shit i had a big grin on my face when your started that and btw i agree with the gauges my gas gauge says im empty at half tank on my 86 tpi 305
what was your LSA on the cam? if you have all the specs on the cam, that would be nice too, but i understand if you dont want to give out your secrets.
I'm a first time owner of an 86 Camaro and could use some pointers and tips on adjusting the carburetor.
Mandi
Awesome vid!!! Subbed!
@quicksilver462 hahaha yeah she's a rich one!
hay bro I have been watching your videos and im 13 and my dad bought me a iroc z just like yours and do you know how much it cost to paint that car and where you got it painted at?
hey i swapped a LT1 T56 into my 92, i put the long tubes and well i had to use the spohn trans cross-member, im not sure if u have true dual exhaust if u do was it hard? can i go 3 inch?
Hey i have a 350 small block and if i wanted to.switch 383 stroker is there any way i need to.do.ecm wiring or just put the 383 right in ? I'm from Pennsylvania near scranton pa i don't think I'm too far away from you. And i have the same kind of color as u but mine is 89
My 305TPI i gonna get takin out and i have a 74 400 outta a truck im gonna put in it. im going to carb 650holly, gonna cam it, headers, and possibley better heads now or later on.
how did you make the transmission crossmember work with the t56
she sounds good dude what cam spec??? im start on my 94 impala ss lt1 cam lifters exc im do it myself i want leave bottom stock hopfully it be ok i want go with 224/230 cam would that do hope u could help???
what size of pipe are those coming from headers length
I own a1983 z28, I have always been interested in swapping aT-56 in it, how much did you spend on that project? Thanks
Hey boss love the car I was just curious as to where you got that front strut brace for the carbureted car all I find is stuff for the tpi cars
