  • ELECTRIC MOTOR OVERHAULING AND TROUBLESHOOTING
90 percent of the load you will have in a vessel are Inductive loads. This is mainly because of the electric motors connected to each pumps.
You will mostly be doing Insulation Resistance check and continuity test onboard. In this way you will know if you'll need to overhaul the electric motor.
Here is the overhauling procedure I did in one of the electric motors we have onboard.

I know what your going thru here, once I had a JP-5 pump room flood, 4 of the main motors (60 hp) got cover with sea water plus the magnet Ed contacts. What a busy friggin week that was since we loss 50% of our pumping capability. 😮😮

8:00 you have to place thermocouple on inner bearing race, couse that is race who is heated first by induction heater..

Wow, I've never seen an electric motor in such a poor state on the inside. In what circumstances would you heat up the bearings in hot oil? Also, could you do a video in the future explaining the working principles of electric motors found on ships? (mainly the difference between induction motors with squirrel cage rotors or wound type rotors)

Is there a way to test the rotor itself? I believe that you can take an ohm meter and touch it to the metal of the rotor, and then touch the shaft itself. If the rotor is good, then you should read infinity between them.
But I am not sure if there are any other ways to test it. In your experience, have you tested it any other way, and have you actually found many bad rotors in your work? I have heard that condition is pretty rare. What do you think? Thanks.
