- I was able to make it out and fish with Paul for a few hours. We got there very early and fished until it was just too hot. Which was around 12. In fact Paul left around 11, and I continued to fish for another hour until I just couldn't anymore. The fishing was good, and I was able to get a couple Rio's and bass, but mostly it was sunfish for me. Which is usual on this river. Seems like I always and getting the sunnies, but rarely get any decent bass.
The rod I used was Risen's 23PS, and the reel was Risen's LW. This is one of my favorite combos for the rivers and creeks around me. The whole thing costs only $350 total, which is a great deal for this quality of gear. Go to www.risenfly.com to check this rod out, and their other gear. You won't be disappointed. Best of all, I can offer you my discount code for your first order. Type in McFly at checkout for an additional 15% off of anything you buy in their shop.

Days with record heat are always a great day of fishing if you follow this advice. Get out early when the sky is just beginning to change from midnight black--> midnight blue, poppers work best(white, yellow, black, purple, frogs, gurglers) The fishing will slow down when the sun cracks the horizon. Move into the shade of trees or banks until about 8-9 am. Then it'll slow way down. Time to head to the house...by 10am, I'm already showered & changed going to the pub for an early lunch...
Yeah for sure, don’t fish too much in the heat, or you will be exhausted! Haha!
I never take a watch with me when I go fishing. So I can only tell you information as I see it. However if the day has been extremely hot, when the sun is a hand span (stretch out your hand touch sun & the bank) its time to head back on the water until its black again. Top water lures rule again. Mice, frogs, cicadas, spruce moths, flying insects, dragonflies, hoppers work awesome. As hoppers go, they start out green--> light green--> light tan/yellow--> dark tan/dark yellow...depending on what month it is....The later in the spring/summer/fall, the darker the color becomes...In Oklahoma the dragon flies are 3-5 inches long & red in color. There are many different colors of dragonflies & all can be deadly.
Hay I'd take a whole day of plinking around catching sunfish and a tan versus just a tan.
Great video, nice water.
Also greetings from northeastern Illinois.
Thanks man, yeah it was a fun little day for sure. With light gear these small fish can be a real blast to fish!
Beautifully clear water and fish were biting. A good day on the water Angler!
For sure, I had a good time
Pound for pound sunfish are fighters! One of my favorite on a fly rod.❤
There are nice 8" red ears where I fish and it's a blast!
That sounds like fun for sure! Yeah on a 3wt or 4wt they are fun!
That was a fine day of fishing and catching!!!!
It was for sure fun!
Very nice outing, those little fish can fight..
Oh yes they can, especially on a light rod. It’s fun for sure.
Awesome video! If you ever wanna fish down at the coast lmk
Thanks! Will do!
Very nice video. Every time I try to target Sun Fish and or Rios I only catch small Guads.
Haha! Every time I target guads I only catch sunfish and rio’s! Hahaha
Look up "cat crap" it helps prevent fog on your glasses it's a brand that works with gun scopes so they don't fog up but they make some stuff for glasses
Cool thank you.
Great day of fishing i'd be all over that on my 3WT
Thank you! Yeah I love fishing 3wt on this river, it’s a blast
To fix the fog on your glasses all day : Apply toothpaste on your glasses, wipe on a small film let it sit for a minute or so on both sides. rinse gently with water until crystal clear. glasses will be good all day. Old divers tip i was told as a kid for my goggles. you're welcome.
Thanks I’ll give it a try
Yes sir even on the coast it’s been crazy hot…
Was just down in corpus this past weekend and it was sickening hot! I expected the water to lower down the temps but nope!
Ótimas capturas, parabéns !!!!
nice👍👍
Thanks
Missing that San Juan action about now, I bet. 🥵
Lol for sure! However this is still enjoyable fishing, just darn hot! Fall will be much nicer
Awesome, im looking to get an 8wt from Risen for my bass flies. We are going to San Antonio in September. Hoping to catch my first Rio too. We don't have Rios in North texas. Thanks for all you do
Thanks man, so I would say an 8wt is way too heavy for San Antonio fishing. Make sure you have a 5wt with you. But for large bass flies, yeah an 8wt is perfect
Haha yeah sorry, I am bringing my 3wt and 5wt to San Antonio but I like your reviews on risen and I'm in the market for an 8wt so I just threw that in the comment too.
Ok cool, so the Goliath rod is amazing! You will love it! Make sure you use my discount code to get it less money.
Also, the genesis is very good for only $99, so if your looking for something a little less money than I’d recommend that one.
@@McFlyAngler awesome thanks, I was looking at the ITB 8wt but might have to go with the Genesis
Good job
You also
Hold these sunfish along their spines laying them back with your whole hand.
Alrighty
I like how at 6:58 theres a fish I think just swimming around at the bottom😂
Yeah, it was a carp, I mentioned it in the video. There are many carp in this river, but I can never get them to even look at my flies.
Ohh ok sorry! It didn't hear
@@McFlyAngler Can you try like little Dumbell Heads and jig them almost along the bottom? I'm kinda new to fly fishing so I dont really know
I’ve tried, just about everything. I’m not sure why they won’t hit here. I’ve caught carp before, just not here at this river
@@McFlyAngler hmm. To be honest, I dont know so maybe research a little on what they eat this time of year, and the rivers bugs.
Where is that river?
Medina
My Risen Genesis gets delivered today. I’m new to fly fishing and have been using a beginner kit from south bend. I think it’s a fiberglass rod. Anyways I’m upgrading to the genesis and a piscifun sword reel. I’m going to hit some fly fish only trout streams in the fall if I keep getting better at casting.
Nice man! You will love that rod.
@@McFlyAngler I’m looking forward to trying it.
I can’t say how the picifun will work though, been a long time since I’ve bought from them, and I’ve heard reports recently of their quality control going south…
@@McFlyAngler I’ll find out soon enough. It’s supposed to come tomorrow. The rod came a few minutes ago and it looks sweet. I might put that south bend reel on it and try it out after work. I can tell this is a way better rod than what I’ve been using.
Oh man, for sure! Everything made by risen is totally top notch.
Can’t seem to find your email? I don’t do Instagram or social media but definitely like to buy some of your micro game changer streamers.
Great channel and thanks for all the help fly fishing.
So on the homepage of my RUclips channel is my email. Go to the “about” section and it will show my email. It’s “hidden” so no bots get it. Which is why I can’t post it here.
Hey McFly I read something that makes me think your a believer. True?
Yes I am. I post bible verses every Sunday, well try to. Sometimes I miss a Sunday if I’m out fishing or something. Lol
@@McFlyAngler I thought so. I am too. Love your vdeos.
Thank you
