Tips: Fish upstream. When you are casting out to current through an eddy, you have to mend your line a lot and will only have a small window of time for a natural drift. Your hits were coming inside the eddy, so you didn't need to cast out all the way to the downstream current. Keeping your fly on the inside of the seam of the eddy allows a much longer natural drift.
...Nice to see you catch one while fly fishing! However, you're forgetting everything that kindly gentleman taught you about casting that day, you're still casting it like a spinning rig, all arm instead of using your wrist. Also, as I recall from my old fly fishing days, you should make several false casts below your target area, lengthening your line with each false cast, and then changing the angle on your real cast to your target area. If you do it right, that "real" cast will be smooth, otherwise it will "Snap". Also, don't drag the retrieve through your target area, make sure the line drifts well passed that zone. Good luck!
Have to agree with this comment. Your were not using a fly fishing cast technique! You looked like you were casting a lure! But a fun video and you caught a fish! Well done!
With all the other tips in the comments I figure one more won't hurt. Always set the hook the direction that the current is flowing. The fish are always facing the direction the water is moving from so setting it with the current will set it into the fishes mouth rather than pulling it out of its mouth.
Hey first state fishing I just wanted to say that you’re a big inspiration to me and I’ve been watching you ever since you reached 5K and I really love your videos keep up the great work
I am no fly fishing expert. Here are some tips I have received. Cast at 45 degree angle upstream to give yourself a longer drift. Mend the line and do not allow too much slack between you and the fly. Set the hook in and upward motion but not the force of bass hook setting. Great video and location. Glad you were rewarded with a fish. Patience is key.
It took me longer than 10 minutes to see you catch a fish. That's how you know it's a real fishing video! Keep it up FirstStateFishing 😎Fishing is not always how these other YTERs make it seem. Love the content!
Quick tip, walk up the river and cast up so the fish don't see you as they are facing the current they can see you if you walk down with the river. Also when ur behind the fish you tend to get more hook ups as ur striking towards the fish not away from it just how you were in the video.
Maybe try out a dry dropper rig next time and fish all those juicy looking riffles you walked past. I catch a bunch of my fish in the current while nymphing. Keep up the great content!!
Hey man great video I love seeing people getting into fly fishing. Your intuition for where fish are going to be is great and your casting isn't perfect but its really pretty good for how long you've been doing it. I think the number one thing that would immediately help you catch more fish is focusing on the drift of the fly. and making it look natural. As an analogy, most of your drifts in this video are the equivalent of burning a crankbait in 100% of the time, some fish might take if they're really aggressive but the smart ones will know something is wrong, that's why the fish was "missing" the take, he either decided last second he didn't want it or missed it because it wasn't floating still on the surface of the water. So how do you do it? Mending is hard right? so rather than casting across the current and making it really hard to get a natural drift, try setting up below the fish (a little off to the slower side or where you're aiming) and cast above them. You will have to continue to take in your slackline as the fly drifts towards you but it will usually be a really good drift. The other tip is that your hook set should be patient, immediate but not preemptive (with clear water its easy to set the hook to fast cuz you see the fish coming) and it should just be raising the pole as high as you can, not swinging the rod hard. Congrats on an awesome trip and beautiful fish!!
Just some friendly tips, use your wrist more instead of your arm! Makes your casting a lot smoother and gets the flies out there. Also with that much slack line out your not setting the hook hard enough to connect with those fish. But other than that keep it up bro you’ll get it in no time
You should set up a double rig with your dry fly as an indicator and remember when setting hook on fly pull line down and lift rod up hope that helps any
I live in Utah and have fished many waters. Hope you like it here and maybe check out some reservoirs we have all kinds species here. Good luck on your fishing endeavors.
If you come through the area, you should fish Wind River Canyon and the Big Horn River around Thermopolis, WY! Blue Ribbon trout fishing. One of my all time favorite fishing areas. Gimme a shout if you need any info.
been watching your videos for a while from Texas. you've inspired me to get up and go fish out of state. im literally packing my bags watching this video to head out to cali and see what i can catch out there. love the videos!
Isn't setting the hook to a side better? I think if you set it straight up you are taking the hook out of the fish mouth. If you set it to a side you are hooking thowards the sides of the mouth.
Yo I live in Utah, let’s goo Btw if you want good places to fish, Utah lake is good for catfish and carp, strawberry reservoir is good for rainbows and cutthroat, deer creek has good smallmouth around the rocky areas, and that is the places I fish the most. There are plenty of lakes around and the ones up in the mountains most often have trout, but most other fish are in the flater areas.
I was just visiting family in Utah and they live 5 mins away from Utah lake. I went and landed so many big catfish. I used worms and chicken liver. Also went to a creek near a bridge and landed my Pb brown trout
More wrist in your cast less arm. Cast up stream with rod at 10 o'clock instead of 7 with a little more tention. Just letting it float natural. Hookset from 10 to 12. You're not fishing for stripers. Also no need to be out far. Just roll cast to the inside of the eddys in those small current breaks and edge of the pool. Seemed to be where all your strikes came Which patters are everything in this. Maybe get yourself a longer rod also. Just a flick of the wrist is all you need. Good luck.
If u venture further into Utah the Provo river and upper Weber river a famous for fly fishing too seen massive brown trout, cutthroat and rainbows come out of them many times
I live in Utah and when I fly fish I always use a hook wrapped with red so it looks like a blood worm and they bite it so much and I would recommend fishing at the bottom with weights and fish along the water that turns from brown to blue
Half of fly fishing revolves around line management. Having all that slack in your line made you miss some of those hooksets. Easily could've caught a bunch more.
I’m down in Northern Utah (Ogden area) Weber River is my favorite place to fly fish! I’ve only been on the green river once and didn’t have any luck. Lol I’m fairly new to fly fishing as well :D big fan been watching the channel for awhile!
I love the fly fishing videos man I'm new to fly fishing as well but have probably put in almost 100 hours this year as my first year fly fishing I picked it up pretty quick I think but when dry fly fishing you have to set the hook immediately they tend to grab then drop the fly really quickly I've noticed and when casting in wind try a double pump cast you can probably find tutorials here on RUclips how to do it I learned by standing on my lawn or in the middle of random streams just casting for hours with no flys on
SICK video!! Ohh man that first fish you caught was MASSIVE!! The 3rd and 4th weren’t huge, but still not bad!! An absolute BANGER of a video! Most fishing YTers try to actually catch fish in their videos, but not you! Bold strategy, let’s see how it plays out! 🤣🤣
Come back to UT any time, man! The fish aren't goin anywhere, there will always be PLENTY of them! Hit up Strawberry Reservoir next time for some big boy cutthroat.
Fish up stream, and keep the lune tight, once u see a blow up strike straight away, and even if its a blow up right next to ur fly strike because he might of hit ur fly but u didnt know it. And when casting ur casting like a spinning rod pull back the rod the let it go forward 2 times and on the 3rd time let ur line go so u get a better cast. ~ryan from ireland
i love your videos i like the fly fishing but idd like you to use mor rods and reels with a kastmasterjig with the blue pink and black you will get major action
If you ever come back to Medford OR try Medco pond. It’s about an hour away and you can catch tons of small fish (Bluegill, Bass, trout). Fun time if you don’t wanna go for the big ones
Man you should've fished in the Lake above the dam. The Flaming Gorge has some of the biggest Lake Trout/Smallmouth in the country. The Green River is great for Browns and Rainbows of course
DUDE! That’s my hometown. I grew up there in Dutch John and fished the Green my whole life. It’s some of the best fly fishing in the country. In fact my dad is the supervisor on that dam. Next time hit me up and I’ll share some secrets with you.
What kind of videos do you guys wanna see the rest of the summer?? 🤔 Hope you’re all having a good one! Thanks for watching it means a lot!
Hi I went fishing to I’m 15 today

More fly fishing content! Loving the RV adventures

Quick tip for drys. Don’t let to much slack line build up so you can get a better set. Good work and tight lines.
Oh look, beautiful wildflowers as you proceed to stomp right on em 😂😂

Been loving all the fly fishing lately
Gotta love exploring new spots.
finally. more fly fishing!
Just trying to help instead of setting the hook to the side. Pull straight up your hook up ratio with the fly will be much better
Isn't setting the hook to a side better? I think if you set it straight up you are taking the hook out of the fish mouth. If you set it to a side you are hooking thowards the sides of the mouth.
