Another great vid! Thanks for sharing your experiences and great advice. You got me hooked on Western Fly Fishing. I was all Tenkara before I watched your videos.
An excellent fishing day John. Thanks for sharing this vid. I enjoyed specifically that brown at 12:50. Good fight. And for beginners this was again a must see instruction video about where to fish. 👍
Thanks for sharing your day with us, I really enjoy your videos from the USA. Reassuring to see that even an expert like you can snag a tree! A really beautiful river and right by the road. Are these places open to everyone to fish? Didn't realise that you could catch trout in such turbulent water. I've never fished such places. Do you ever eat the stocked rainbows, those golden fish were gorgeous, never seen one before, they must be an easy target for predators though.
Yes they are completely public! Anyone and everyone can fish. I do eat the stocked rainbows occasionally, and those golden rainbows are easy pickings for predators. They often don’t last long! Thanks for watching
LoL. I talk to the fish just like you do. I'm always telling them to chill out in my net. Relax and I'll get that hook out so you can go back to being a Trout! Good stuff, nice Browns!
Gotta stick your go pro in the hole and leave it there for 20mins that would be cool! Awesome vid as always man I wish I had golden trout up north in nh
Hey brotha!! Love the videos and the knowledge you share! maybe you've shared in other videos but i have wondered what net and what hookup you have to your belt? If you have a setup video id love to watch that as well. Thank you, keep doing what you do man!
Awesome ending after those very nice browns. Nice little smallie stopped by to say hello. Not sure I recall you netting a smallmouth, at least left on the video file. I'm sure you have, me and corresponding memory are getting old. Good show my friend.
This creek has been fishing great. I’m sure you know this but the really big browns live way upstream, almost up to the next town. May 4-6 th, I caught several 17-24” browns, I measured them, and I was sight fishing for them using a beetle dry fly and a weightless old school hares ear or pheasant tail. Man, I enjoyed this video, thanks a bunch!!!!!
do you mind me asking what creek this is? i’m from a town in ga where theres nothing but bass fishing and one small creek with stocked trout. typically drive up to north ga but love to go to north carolina. just only know of fires creek which is always a hit or miss. would love a good creek to fish for numbers and beautiful big browns. was lucky enough to get a 19” brown at fires last april but nothing over 13” since then🤣
Does fishing with an indicator spook fish in a smaller creek? I wonder if that is contributing to my lack of success despite visibly seeing many rises and feeding fish
Jon. Another terrific video! I don't mean to sound repetitive, but I'm still not getting your fly line/rig setup. It looks like the 'weight forward' part of your fly line is actually sighter line. Is that right? If so, what length? Does the sighter line go to tippet then to your nymph? If I finally have all this right....why do you set it up like this? I've heard of 'mono rigs' but this seems different. Keep up the great work! David
I'm so jealous of the golden rainbow trout catch. I visited WV last year in hopes of catching one with no luck. I spent a week there and only caught regular Rainbows.
Another awesome video ,Just wondering, do you use fly clips So you can change flies easier.Or do you recommend just tying them straight to the leader ? thanks
Love the videos, always awesome!!! I noticed you said at the beginning of the video that the weather was bad for browns, do you believe it’s better to fish for them in certain conditions?
Yep! Overcast or raining or anything that makes it darker. The bigger fish don’t typically like sunny days because they don’t feel as safe to come out and hunt for food.
So sad to see the US stocking these wonderful streams with these rainbows... In Europe, we often go back to "no stocking" but improving river conditions to enhance natural reproduction of the native browns. These stockers compete with the native fish in these rivers and they don't teach the fishermen about sensitive populations and that every fish taken home for the pan is one less for the spawning pool. I really think it teaches fishermen wrong stuff if you just stock pounds and pounds of these rainbows....Especially if they then go to a stream with no stockers and they just take as many fish home as they were "tought" on the "stock-rivers". Hope this will change one day!
It’s a huge problem especially in Virginia. Everyone wants to kill everything. That’s why prefer fly fishing only or the catch and release sections. It’s a shame because if the abundance of beautiful streams that are just bone dry of trout by the end of spring.
It’s certainly an issue. Most agencies that conduct stockings realize it’s an issue, but stakeholders (the public) feel otherwise. Keep in mind this guy fishes in the SE US, where agencies aren’t as progressive in this subject. You can find native wild fisheries in the western US very easily.
@@jacoblaurain8911 Western USA is much more wild and untouched than the East. There are a lot of remote rivers and streams that hardly get any fishing pressure if any at all.
There's a lot of hatches here in WNC. Everywhere. I've seen stoneflys to horseflys and got to see my first green inch worm today. Mayflies of various colors and the cicadas are crazy good this year, and believe me, big baits (natural bugs 🐛 ) catch big fish. I would love to see if you know someone that ties the cicadas fly. I truly enjoyed and appreciated this video. Your statement that fisherpersons should be happy with what they catch is spot on. When you fished that rock and decided to let it run on a good cast and caught a fish because you did, that was the perfect example of perseverance, and skill pays off. Loved it, keep'em coming and always tight lines. Thanks, Tony Walkingstick
I almost always euro nymph these smaller streams. I only use floating line and a conventional indicator rig on water that’s too big to effectively euro nymph
The river I fish is only 3 miles long and I've fished it for 35 years since I was 9 years old and I've learned where every good lay pool is theirs spots I have to fish if I see anything or not cuz I know from the winter when the hedge dies back theirs a huge concrete ridge opposite bank that I've had several big browns come from. I would love to see this as of fish sadly they are in decline and not from over fishing just seems that numbers haven't recovered from when it was overfishing about 15 years ago alot of illegal netting happened.
I’m just starting out too. From what I’ve gathered wet flies sink for fishing below surface, dry flies float for fishing the surface. Nymphs are a type of wet fly that mimic the younger developmental stages of insects. Streamers mimic bait fish. To pick a pattern look for insects at your fishing spot and try to match your fly to them (or match streamer to bait fish). Match the hatch as they say. Good luck out there!
Thanks, I’m from Maryland and it definitely looked like east coast to me. Always looking for some new spots that could be a weekend trip, almost all of the places close enough for a day trip are pretty awful.

WV is awesome for sure! And thanks for watching the videos
You have the best vids around. You're a good, unpretentious fisherman. Thanks.

Great footage as always, nice to hear a fisherman explain the runs and flows of the water, where to expect fish to be, good watercraft!👌

Where do you ideally fish? Like states? I’m trying to find more places to fly fish that are a little more secluded instead of public areas.
All of the areas I fish are public areas 😂

I hate that as good as the fishing is out here in Oregon, the fish you just go "meh cya" like the first rainbow are still huge ones for me :)

Re: changing to a dry when you see risers. I'll change up often, because catching on the dry is fun. And that's the point.
I probably would if I saw a ton of risers, but (to me) just catching the fish is fun enough 😂
Great video, what state?
Is that sempe line?
In Socal we call them Lightning trout since there is nothing relating them to Goldens
Were ypu catching all them on the same fly
I caught them on both flies (watch the end to see what they were)
The Palomino is separate from the Golden Trout, native to the Rocky Mountain region.
