Ninja and Yolandi were a couple and basically the group. They also landed a starring role in the movie Chappie and were surprisingly good.
Yolandi was David Fincher‘s choice to play Lisbeth in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo! That’s actually who he had in mind the whole time, but frankly I’m glad she didn’t get the role, I don’t think she would’ve been right for it. Rooney Mara killed it!

Their name is kinda pronounced like "Dee Antvoorrd" which means "The Answer". What a shock to see this on here. I absolutely love them and I was so lucky to see them here in the middle of Kansas a few years ago when they did a worldwide tour. It's sold out almost immediately although it was almost all people a lot younger than me. It was in a small venue that holds about 500 people and the decibel level of the audience response was off the charts. What an absolutely fun live show.
They are pieces of shit. You support some of the worst ppl in the industry.

Priceless reaction, laugh. They actually performed this live on the David Letterman show at one point. And they played it at the concert I saw here in Lawrence Kansas. But you have to understand they started off as performance art Duo and so they've always been very artistic. And there's just way too much to be said, the whole zefside movement in South Africa and all that but there's a bit of tragedy there too because that shorter guy you see that looks a little disfigured? That was there DJ in childhood friend but he had that disease that stunts your growth and makes you look funny and then he died early from it. They replaced him with this really large black guy who not only is a DJ but plays drums and things. He is in this much later video that I will link too, which is fantastic storytelling visually. And a great song. But the visuals are just stunning. It's called fatty boom boom oh, and it's basically a video answer to a Twitter flame War they got into with Lady Gaga at one point. She asked them to be her opening act on a world tour and they turned her down because they thought it would make them too mainstream. In the meantime, she thought it would lend her act some more Edge. So she reacted angrily at first and said well then good luck getting millions of followers like I have. So they made this video to a song they were already working on. But then they patched it up afterwards and they get along.
Yolandi Vi$$er is actually quite beautiful but she always has these weird haircuts and they like to play up that they were from the wrong side of the tracks but it's also part of the performance art aspect. They are so fun. But I hope you check this video out, it is just visually stunning.

"Die Antwoord" means The Answer in one of their South African languages. All the imagery in this video is some deep South African themed stuff

I've watched/listened to this band for the sheer novelty and the fact that could never come up with their stuff in a million years. Fun fact: not only are the two of them a couple (at least they were) but their kid is in the video. They even did a movie, again, worth checking out for the novelty factor alone.

When I first heard this band and saw their videos, I was convinced South Africa was like the setting from a Mad Max film.
They put on one of THE BEST Live shows I've ever seen. Only concert I've been too where 100% of the people at the show were jumping during this song, including security and the bar tenders.

Going into dark waters with this one. They have a song named Ugly Boys which showcases varios music personalities such as Marilyn Manson, Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, among others. The video for the song Baby's on Fire is about a family who's son is the one that pulls the strings and boss that won't let his sister "get off" with a guy while he alway having women with him. The brother chases away the guy with a sword, a gun, etc.
The video for the song Fatty Boom Boom is another freaky one, but with interesting wardrobe and body paint and African rhythm. Another I don't like that portray a student wanting to get together with an ex convict and getting drugs from him which name is Cookie Thumper.

Not a big fan of Die Antwoord but I always like their art and end-up watching whatever they produce. I was in South Africa about a year and a half ago, at the time I remember reading that this couple in Die Antwoord decided to leave Los Angeles and move back to Cape Town in South Africa because "LA was too soft and normal" .. After spending time in South Africa, I could see what he meant, place is off the flippin' rails, was about to tip-over at any minute. Die Antwoord seems to flip back and forth between English and Afrikaans, often mixing the two together, something I experienced quite a bit especially among whites in South Africa.

Their hook is that little girl pocket-person voice in Yolandi, but also that they are a couple and that gives them freedom to be quirky and artistic. Their art is the vibe. Their songs are all hook and no ... hmm ... Their songs have limited quality. But they are a fascinating group.
