It may sound really dated now, but it's hard to express just how groundbreaking this was when it first came out. It was the first ever mainstream hip hop release and most people had never heard anyone rapping to music before. This really was revolutionary.
This song and Rapture by Blondie!
and shame it was just a hustle. it was hugely impactful but Caz said it best in that Hip Hop Evolution interview when he was like "this?! those my rhymes!" and it was soft by standards back then even. but Sylvia Robinson had the vision and we here
You are 100% correct! I was probably 12 or 13 (around '82 or '83) when I first discovered rap and it was AMAZING to me! I couldn't get enough of it. 🙂
Had no idea that disco was on its way out while rap was on the rise back in the late 70s.
Gotta check out Double Dutch Bus!🥰
This song is in the Library of Congress being culturally important to music. I was 8 years old and we'd go crazy hearing this. My poor mother had to hear this over and over-then SHE got in to it as well. Good memories
Hahaha 55 here and just almost sang every word WOW I was 13 when this came out. Fresh roller skates and a boom box to match this song was all you heard till the Beastie Boys came out. Loved that you did this didn't know I could still sing this song still. Love ya for the walk down memory lane 🥰🥰🥰
58 and still loving it.
54 here. I was starting to get into rock and roll about the time that this came out and so really didn't get into the emerging rap scene. Even I can sing along and remember most of the lyrics.
Bboys get a mention, and thats cool af. Same or similar period. Some rocked on...
Everyone over 50 knows every word to this song and can still sing right along…
I know every word. My favorite
Haha. Yup. My dad loves this song.
I still remember most of the words..it came out when I was in middle school and took over the world
Yes but i'm a little younger! had an older cousin!
Yes sir, sure do! ❤️🇨🇦
I can still recall my white suburban parents dancing and singing along to this song in our family room during weekend parties. To add some perspective, my Dad is 85 years old now.
This was lifted off Chic's "GoodTimes" so they sampled really early as well.
Technically they didn't actually sample it, they just played the same song and rapped over it (with instruments). Sampling didn't happen for a few more months, lol.
Correct! However Sugarhill had a house band who played the music.
Another huge hit from 1979
I remember skating to this at the roller rink. I’m old AF 🤣
Same you'd be tired as hell ✌️
Still know every word 40 yrs later... loved the Sugarhill Gang 🥰
I was in the Marine Corps when this song came out, and those guys wore multiple cassettes out on their boom boxes playing this! This brought back such great memories!
Same here. Was returning from Oki when I first heard this. Thought it was a mixtape until I was told it was the radio playing.
I can only imagine. its like a 12 minute track lol
@@darylwelch2496 did you like your time in Oki? I’ve heard from most folks who have been stationed there that they had a delightful time.
@@tais1355 each of the 3 times I was there had it's ups and downs. Mostly ups. But, then again, I also enjoy combat operations. Lol
They layed down the blueprint for what was to come 👍….not just hip hop but a lot of.different genres of music and styles was created back then during the 70s and 80s…..lots of creativity back then
There was rapping going on already but they were the first to get a rap hit song playing all over the place. The song in the background is the song Good Times by Chic.
Also in 1979, when this rap song was hitting the scene, so was Prince with I Wanna Be Your Lover, and Michael Jackson's Off The Wall album was on top.
M pop music .The Buggles Videos killed the radio star,, Funky town . Were all released in 1979 ,, 1979 may have been the biggest year ever for the music industry
I remember when this came out.. first hip hop album I ever bought.. still love it
I am 54. This was the first song that got me dancing in 5th grade. Never stopped dancing since.
This was the greatest, before feelings got hurt, we all loved each other. I am a 52yr old white woman who was raised color blind, now I wish I could go back because now the way things are it breaks my heart!
Another well known song that "started" rap/hip hop was "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. This song was more of a dance song but The Message had a much harder edge.
When this song first came out, the Sugar Hill Gang did this song live for promotion at my Roller Rink; Roll-A-Palace in Brooklyn, NY; was an awesome experience for a 13 year old!!!! I can still sing every word!!!!!!!!
In case you haven't figured it out, Asia and BJ, the background music is "Good Times" by Chic.
I was 10 yrs old when this came out. I remember seeing them perform this on Soul Train. I was blown away. Sitting here listening to this - memories coming back - dancing in my seat. BJ had the groove going! ML&R
I was 14 and the same thing.....
ruclips.net/video/mM-BBvtQaPg/видео.html
12 for me my friend.
Without Rappers Delight, There is nothing.
Right on!!!
This song is a classic! Another classic from around this time is “Double Dutch Bus” by Frankie Smith..check it out!
You all need to hear the full 14 minute version
40+ yrs later I still remember every word!!❤🔥
I was in 6th/7th grade when this came out...it changed everything. We taped it off the radio with a tape recorder..memorized every word. I STILL know most of the words..it's just in my brain hardware now!! It was revolutionary.
I was 11 when this song came out and everyone went crazy over this song. I live in the Midwest. I live about 2 1/2 hours from Chicago. In my area nobody ever heard this type of music. In Chicago they were already listening to this new "rap" music. It was a phenomonal time to be young! So much great music came from hip hop! Old school rap is and will always be THE BEST!!
Dance floors, yards and living rooms all filled up with this one 🤣 tks for the memories - we had it goin on. All colors, all genres, all feeling the beat 💕😌
OMG! This song takes me back to my high school days! We had never heard anything like it before and we couldn't get enough of it. Looking back, we had no idea we were experiencing the birth of an entire new genre of music.
Most of the music back then was about having a good time.. in all genres... There was some political stuff but most was about the party.. wish we could get back to that
Old school music is amazing
Also check-out 'Grand Master Flash & The Furious Five', song is called 'White Line's' ( just naming one )
The background music is sampled from Chic's "Good Times". First Top 40 rap song and the the first rap song I ever heard.
Man I was just a little kid when this came out. I've always loved this song.
Roller skating to this, Strawberry Hill, Blonde, and several others that seem to come out roughly the same generalized time...childhood memories for those of us who grew up in the golden age of 70's and 80's... They would play these on college radio over the weekend, right after Punk rock & New Wave hours...music explosion and due to the new at that time MTV, music video explosion.
Thanks for the reaction.
The Worm and The Sperm were actual dances, back in the day.
This one NEVER grows old!! Imagine; I am Norwegian and grew up in the countryside of north of Norway , just a teen then in 70-80ties- and even I KNEW this song and got hooked in rapping, HipHop and Streetdance!! Even got a SoulTrain-fever!! This song was my start of this music genre (the lyrics!! LOL), and even today- well grown up- it has made my way into Kpop!! Thank you guys for reacting to this!! Keep uo the good work, and stay healthy!
Love and greetings from Norway!!
Stated it all!! Without this, Rap wouldn't have went as mainstream as fast as it did. I was a yr old, but when I heard this yrs late, it lead me to KRS-1, RUN DMC, LL Cool J, & the Slick Rick's of the World! & it was a WRAP (or should I say RAP) for me, from the on!
KRS-1…….ahhhhhh sheet!😉
That soul train line ya feel me 💯💯💯
I was in elementary school when this came out and I couldn't retain anything I read in school, but damn if I couldn't rap this song! We had no idea this would be considered rap later on down the road.
Definitely get the party started. At the club, skate rink 🛼, backyard BBQ etc. It was coming from the underground starting off. Yall Definitely need to the 14.30 minute extension play to this. I guarantee yall will get up to dance and jam. Great reactions yall ✊🏾✌🏾👍🏾🎶🕺🏾🛼
Add to your Playlist. The beat behind it is from group CHIC the song GOOD TIMES
Grew up roller skating at public ring with real people. Actual real life other human beings. We would skate in circles jamiñ
So awesome how Asia's smile just kept gettin bigger and bigger! 😁😂😂😂❤️
That's the very first popular rap song we heard everywhere.
This and oddly enough Blondie were the first to bring wrap onto the charts. It opened the door for beastie boys and Run DMC and after that the doors were wide open.
In the movie "Wedding Singer", the older woman Adam Sandler gave singing lessons to sang this!
This song came out when I was in 6th grade. All the kids learned every word.
Omg! I forgot about this!! I remember when it came out it was such a new sound!! Hell yea!! I miss the 80's LOL
68 and still lovin it. I don't know if they were first, but there was another rap group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5 with a banger in 1978 called "The Message.". Really gives something to think about.
We danced a lot this song here in Brazil in 70/80's. Great memories.
would love seeing more early rap/hip hop reactions, thanks for the video!
Hip Hop & rappin' had been around since the early 70's but this was one of the first on wax & to get wide radio play to blow up.
This came out way before i was born but i've known about rappers delight since i was a november child
Rap used to be about having fun. Today it's about money, gangsters, Tyronne's, and hoes.
You should listen to the full version…it’s over 14m and so much better 😊👍👍
Sugar Hill Gang and Kurtis Blow closed out the 1970s.
Anyone remember roller skating at the Fleetwood in Chicago? EVERYONE would get out there and skate and do moves at the same time!! It was truly amazing back in the day!!!
I was 9 years old when this came out in 1979…such a great song👍🏼
I say hotel, motel, Holiday Inn!
If your girl starts acting up,
Then you bring her friend! 😁
The background in this is from Le Chic's "Good Times". 1977. Love your reactions!
about the same time as Grandmaster Flash and Furious 5 who put social issues out in front with their music, early 80s
This song has made way for so many. The word rappers delight is where "RAP came from , HIP HOP , came from. And how many times have you heard hotel motel holiday in in a song. I win a dance contest dancing to this song , just in a club in the 90s I was I my 30s then. And I had to crawl off the stage. 14 mins straight dancing lol 😅😂
I was a teenager then, 15 years old, and I, along with all my friends, remembered this whole thing by heart, would grab our Boone's Farm screw-top wine, shelf temperature, and a six packs of Schlitz Malt Liquour Bull, put our tires in the mud in our big trucks in the moonlight, and sing this song verse for verse, word for word, (and the Double Dutch Bus! 😁) on a Friday night, and then go right into A Country Boy Can Survive by Hank Jr.! 😊 It was ALLLL GOOOOD back then!! 😀 MUCH LOVE, BEAUTIFUL SOULS, from a 79s rocker/hippie/disco/grunge chick from 1964!! 💓💓💓
7:53 Correction: Soul Train was a thing. waaaaay before this actually
This is literally where RAP, AND HIP HOP. came frome the words are in the title and song. They were fantastic. I won a dance competition once dancing to this song , it was 14 mins long, I was soaked with sweat 😅🤣
This song gave us the phrase "hip hop." This song was ON FIRE back in the day. People calling radio stations or going to record stores kept asking for the "hip...hop" song (the first words of the song). So it became known as that "hip hop" song.
This was the short version. You would find the long version more fun! 15 minutes of it!
RAPper's Delight was definitely where it all began! & for those who couldn't remember the name of it referred to it as "the hip hop song" because of the starting lyrics. This was the very first vinyl record I ever owned in the 70's & used to play it over & over on my Wonder Woman record player. 😆
This came out when I was 3 & captivated me as it was a huge hit here in the UK reaching number 3 in the singles charts, among a mostly white population such as myself. Even my father who detested all rap music that followed liked it. I found rap lost the fun, the funk & the creativity around the mid-late 1990's for the most part.
This was 1979. New York radio DJ Gary Byrd released a record in 1972 or '73 titled "Soul Travelin''" on which he did a similar style rap in tribute to the music acts of the day. The audio of the record is available on RUclips.
Rap today to not REAL rap. It's posturing. THIS is the real deal.
Yeah !!!!!! So glad u guys reacted to this. That was fun
Love it! My favorite song by them is 8th Wonder! We roller-skated to this song a lot! And yes lol their lyrics were wild, they were freaky in a good way :) Also could you please react to Apache by them(even though it always reminds me of Will Smith and Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air entering a dance contest and they played this song) Keep On Rockin'
OMGosh I forgot about roller skating to this until I read your post. More memories flooding back. Thx!!
@@christymurphy6571 isn`t music great for memories! :)
Sylvia Robinson is credited as the driving force behind two landmark singles in the hip hop genre: "Rapper's Delight" (1979) by the Sugarhill Gang, and "The Message" (1982) by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, both of which she produced. Several publications have dubbed her as "The Mother of Hip Hop". At the 11th Annual Rhythm and Blues Awards Gala in 2000, she received a Pioneer Award for her career in singing and for founding Sugarhill Records and in 2022, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the Ahmet Ertegun Award category for being a major influence on the creative development of hip-hop's early successes and is the second woman to receive the honor, after Cynthia Weil. (wikipedia)
6th grade - this was the first rap song that was ever played on the radio. I listened to it on my Walkman
Don’t forget break dancing and break dance battles 😂
Basement dance parties when I was around 12 this song was played a lot . Music and memories go hand in hand.,,
This was 1979 and party raps, house jams, def jams in the park-the beginning of what was to become a billion dollar industry, y'all need to check out the soundtrack from a hip- hop movie Wild Style(1982)pure underground hip-hop at its best
The music is ”Good times” by Chic. 😎👍🏼👍🏽👍🏾
I'm 59 and I can tell you without any doud, that Rapper's Delight, I was only feefthen, has been and will be for always the greatest jam in the rap music. Still today when I listen it once more time I'm astonish by the perfect timing of those three guys, I just can say WOW, the time has gone but this work by Sugarhillband, will never sunset. Thanks..
Sugar Hill, Grandmaster Flash, Rakim... all worth exploring. You can feel the disco/soul train flavors in there.
The beat is straight rip off Good Times by Chic.
@@maxis5650 Indeed
I loved this in the 70s.. I had this album...
listen to the full version
This is the song that gave HipHop the name HipHop. Wonder Mike started all his rhymes with " Hip Hop, hippy to the hippyty hip hip hop you don't stop"
Rap started in the 60’s from the dead poets but in actuality it started thousands a years ago in Greece from the word rhapsody
Do some more throwback. Like fat boys , grandmaster flash and UTFO
SAY Whaaaaat‼️ That’s what I’m talkin’ bout .. Hell ya BJ, you KNOW!
THX’s 🔥🔥🔥 reaction! ♥️ yawl
This a Fav of Mike Cross (Wonder Mike lol) so, he’s got a live version w/ Grandmaster Melle Mil 🔥 coming out that I requested. Will sent link when drops of ud like! ♥️
they sampled the popular disco song "Good Times" by Chic, I was 15 when this came out in 1979 - PEACE LOVE n HIPPYNESS!
It was a competitive sport when I was at school as to who could memorise the most lyrics and bars the most quickly 🤣🎶💙✊
Who doesn’t know this song? It’s been in sooooo many movies and commercials. It’s the first ever real rap song!!!
Definitely still know all the words……we all do I think……❤️🎼🎶
Grandmaster Flash-The Message
Or white lines .
Rap existed in little pockets around the country. Mostly New York I think. But this is probably the first Rap song most people ever heard at the time this came out. I was in 6th grade and we all tried singing this.
First rap song I ever heard -- I heard it when it first came out in 1980 while I was in high school. I know... I'm old. Been a rap fan ever since.
This is the beginning. I bought this LP album when it came out took it into my high school band room and played it on the turntable. I have friends that remember me for turning me onto the first rap. I am a 58 year old funky Caucasian. I have always been with the groove, with any music but this hit me strong. Love it. Now listen to some Teddy Pendergrass, please.
The album had some great funk tracks
No stopping for a chorus straight flowing
One of my Faves. Like can you imagine if this song came out today with all the black , yellows and reds lol
Hey guys. Although Sugar Hill hit the hardest with their record back then, the very first rap record was King Tim The Third - Fatback Band.
Sugar Hill Gang Sued by Niles Rodgers for using his copyrighted Chic song without permission. (settled in court)
Every tune of this song has been sampled thousands of times, by other artists.
1978. Yep. Still got that record. I was in 8th grade. My poor parents didn't know what to do with me! Lol.
There's actually a rap song that pre-dated this song by a few months in the same year. Look up The Fatback Band - King Tim III. (Personality Jock)
Hello from Australia, this song came out when I was 16, I remember it being the first rap song? I think it was the start of the end of Disco. Love from Australia.
