Hey Watchers! Steven here - first off I wanted to say thank you so much for checking out Homemade! A lot of you may know me from Worth It, a show that gave me the privilege of eating some of the most delicious meals all around the world. When I was thinking about what I wanted to be my next project, I realized there were so many more stories around food that aren't covered in the media revolving around homemade food. So with this series, I wanted to take a deeper dive into the stories of those beloved recipes and the cultural themes that underlie them. Hope you enjoy and that this content can help push the conversation around culture a little bit forward. One last note for those interested - we'll be posting Wan Qing's homemade dumpling recipe as well as other behind-the-scenes content over at patreon.com/watcher. Thanks again everyone! ❤️ Quick edit: for those asking for the next episode, our current schedule cycles through all the shows for pilot season so Homemade will be back March 19 featuring tamales!
I actually love that the conversation at "home" went so natural, switching languages n stuff. It just felt much more personal this way? If they forced themselves to do all of this in English it probably wouldn't flow as much. I gladly read the subs if that means the people on the video as comfortable as they can be, I mean it's about home after all. 🙏🏻
I 100% agree. I just wish they put the translation of the Chinese in the closed captioning as well (because they do have the English typed out). I rely heavily on closed captioning for English because audio processing disorder sucks and because CC is at the bottom of the screen like the subs, the cc ends up covering the English translation. I tried my best to alter the CC appearance so I could read through it, but it's still hard.

Damn, I can already tell that this show is gonna resonate with everyone, and I hope Steven knows that too. I'm not even asian but everyone talking about nostalgia and their cultures and how they love that feeling of homemade food is gonna make me cry. I completely agree. I really want to talk to my grandparent from each side of my family and find out if they have any familial recipes to send my way, because I’ve never had that. I mean, my nan had some of her own traditions (like peanut butter cookies during the holidays) but I haven’t learned anything that runs through the family.

Making your culture's food is ritual, it is family, it is love. Thanks for reminding me of that.

I SO love it when they are speaking Chinese with each other!!! As someone who is obsessed with different languages AND food, this episode is just perfect for me! Very well done Steven!
Ideas are easy. But they've managed to pull off every single one and that is extremely impressive! I'm proud of my boys ;w; ) Thy really coming into their own!
Can we have a Filipino food episode?! There's so many foods that I have memories of from when I was a kid: lumpia, food for the gods, empanadas. Also just wanna say that this series makes me so happy. Food is something that hits a special place in my heart and reminds me so much of my family cooking together and teaching and learning from each other. It's always something that I felt has connected me with people and this episode put a huge smile on my face. Thank you so much for making this!
This show was so interesting and funny and wholesome, I loved it. I laughed, learned, I got hungry. So far Watcher Network is just all a win for me, like all of these shows have been so fun and well-thought out and produced and extremely entertaining while also being high quality and I'm just so happy you guys have gotten to do this!! I'm living paycheck to paycheck right now so I can't join Patreon but I intend on doing so if/when that changes soon because this content deserves to be supported. Congratulations and keep up the good work, Ryan, Shane, and Steven! I'm excited for more episodes of the four shows you've got so far and for whatever content there is to come in the future!!
Me, a Persian, who has never made dumplings with her family: the nostalgia 🥺🥺🥺 Honestly I teared up when you guys were making dumplings because all I could think about was how much I miss my grandma in the kitchen showing me how to make Persian kotlets as a kid. She passed away suddenly this year and it's been hard for our family. Thank you for the good memories you guys. ❤️
when she said she just felt when it was good i felt that ,, trying to cook stuff from my grandma's old recipes is so hard because she always just did things with her heart and following a recipe is just not the same. this series is gonna be amazing :')
There has to be an episode on jewish homemade latkes versus jewish deli latkes. Come out to Minneapolis/St. Paul my bubbe can make a mean latke and I know of the only delicatessen that can even come close to home made quality
That would be interesting, especially as the years have gone by. No one told me were Jewish until my teens. They left Germany in around the 1870s, and slowly as they became more and more American, they also ended up becoming Catholic. I don’t think we have anyone practice Judaism anymore. Granted I’m atheist, but I’m still a bit upset on some cultural aspects I never got to learn about, not even the foods. Jewish foods were NEVER cooked - just more generically German.
Steven sarcastically speaking (I think?) Mandarin is hilarious to me. "I DID A GOOD JOB. SUPER GOOD JOB." The sarcastic voice exists in every language.
Oh man, the nostalgia and homesickness hit hard, and I'm here for it! I immediately got flashbacks to making dumplings and eggrolls with my family, and the warmth that came with it. I can't wait for future episodes and for others to remember that same feeling of home.
It's funny because as I was watching I realized the process is nearly identical to the pork and beef tortellinis my family would make when I was younger. It made me want to get out my pasta roller!
Comment for Watcher Weekly: I just binged all of the videos currently on your channel, and I just have to say that it is incredible what you guys are doing and what you have accomplished with this company/channel. You really have something special here; the love and hard work that you put into your company and content really shines through all that you do. Every person who has made this become a reality is an amazing individual, and I wish you all the best as you continue to work and laugh together. I look forward to watching everything you have to offer. P.S. I would join your Patreon but alas I am a broke college student. I will be buying merch though, I can promise you that!
brb gonna go home to spend time with my mom & grandma and figure out how to record her cooking her homemade Mexican food dishes. I would hate to see that tradition go away. Thank you so much for this, the internet needs more content like this.
I love Chef Shirley Chung! Her restaurant is seriously SO GOOD and the food is fun! So happy to see Ms Chi's getting some more attention, she deserves it!!
I want to learn but have never been taught. This is why I am loving this show! I want to incorporate a lot of cultures into my future family's household because I want them to experience great food! ❤
Imma be honest, out of all the shows this channel has brought out so far... I think this might actually be my favourite one! I love every show on this channel, but I love the food aspect and how it's so personal. Super awesome show, Steven!
As a South Asian (Pakistani) I'm so happy that Steven and his guest can speak Chinese! Us Asians don't pass on our language in so many cases, really inspires me to keep teaching my wife Urdu, and I'll definitely be talking to my kids in Urdu. Love, -The world's biggest Pakistani Watcher fan
This made me tear up so much, the reminder of how food is such a huge part of national identity. Not living at home means it can feel hard to be connected to where you're from, this made me wanna make a huge bowl of cawl and pice cacwn and think of home - thank you, Steven.
THE CHEF WAS SO CUTE..... dumpling queen!! so funny and easygoing, it seems like yall had a great time making those vegan dumplings (GGRRR i wanna eat them so bad, it looked so good T__T)
All the talk about making dumplings together as a family and every culture having their own version of dumplings really resonated with me and made me super emotional. I’m turkish and we have a dish called “mantı” which is basically very tiny dumplings with ground beef inside. My moms family is from the mantı capital of turkey and every year me and my mom go there to visit my aunts. While we stay there we always get together and all the girls (my aunts and their daughters + my moms aunt who is 74) fold mantı. It’s a great time to joke around and gossip and catch up and I love it. Watching this really made me miss that
Now that I binged each homemade episode I cried at every one of them. The love these families put into their food is humbling. For people who don’t have family it’s beautiful to see. TY Steven Lim & crew! 💚
yoooo at 12:54 when she switched from english to mandarin.... i related so much. I swear I can never go through conversation at home without mixing english and mandarin
quaintleaf exactly,,, some things you just cant convey in one language Me and my friends flip between korean and english so fast and often sometimes we forget that there are people that cant do that and have to concentrate to make sure we’re not rude and speaking in only korean
When I was younger my parents had a rule that we could only speak Spanish at home. Now that my siblings and I are older it's second nature and almost a language on its own when we switch between English and Spanish. It also feels like meeting other who can also do this brings us together as well.
That's what life's about. Being Native American I can say to you don't lose your language, food, and ways. When you feel the spirit of food like you guys did it makes me happy to see you almost cry. Family is there go out and get it. Love you guys.
this video means a lot to me. I am Vietnamese and Australian and haven't really been able to connect with family (due to language barriers) except through food. I never learned Vietnamese, and a lot of my family never learned English or learned broken English, so we sort of meet in the middle at New Year's (both lunar and western) and Christmas and other events where we can have a meal. the part of the video that got to me is when Steven, Melody and Wan Qing were making the dumplings and all speaking both english and Chinese, it felt like something that i've been missing my whole life. thank you all at watcher for making this series
Oh my god this is such a charming little show! I teared up a bit at the end. Everything was perfect. The chef had a great personality and Ryan's stepmom was so adorable. I can't get over the fact that she made Ryan his favourite dish when they met for the first time. And also the dad dropping off the mysterious potato salad out of nowhere lol. This videos feels like home. ❤
im crying and i dont know why midway through this show, when the mom said they make dumpling wrappers as a family, i just remembered how mothers prepare food with love and pass it on to future generations. it's special. i lost my mom like 10 years ago and i will never have her homecooked meal again. 🥺
I finally got the chance to watch after a horrible week, and I am sold. This show made my heart just melt. I'm not of the Asian culture but this still brought back memories of the feelings I got when I baked cheesecakes with my Grandma.
Oh my gosh! I have never left a comment before on RUclips. This show was so much fun. I love to cook but live alone so it’s kind of, what’s the use?? This show made me so happy!!! Thank you!!
Steven, I gotta admit, I wasn’t sure about Homemade when I first heard of it because it was so different from everything else on watcher (that I know of) but i was very pleasantly surprised. It was a very good show and i am proud of u and Shane and Ryan for doing this regardless of what people think of it :)))))
coming from someone who was born knowing NOTHING about my mothers family (i just recently found out about my chinese roots months ago, and im turning 17 in a couple of weeks) i didn't expect this series to hit me as hard as it did. they definitely weren't wrong when they said that this would be an emotional series. steven and the crew definitely worked hard and i can feel the heart of this project, the warmth really translates well in this medium and i just want to genuinely thank you for bringing home to me.
This is straight-up my mom tho like you often hear about people putting hot sauce on all their food not my mom no no no she'll put vinegar on everything, the other day she pulled out the vinegar while eating a quesadilla....
steven!!!! how come you make such wholesome content!!?? i know im late to the party but i love the shows and watcher of course! i hope you ryan and shane never stop creating bc i am now such a huuuude fan. i really feel like i know you guys and i alwyas catch myself smiling when watching anything you guys create and that is such a huge plus and somehting that i am totally grateful for,
"Food gives you a type of feeling and joy that no other food gives you." I cried during this episode because for me food also equals family... And reminds me of my grandma. This is my new fave show on all of RUclips. Seems cruel that we have to wait a few more weeks until the next episode.
This episode just gives me the same feeling that I get when cooking with my grandma while making some basic Lebanese foods, that we all learned from my grandpa that was from Lebanon and all that. Got me really emotional so I can say that this will for sure be my #1 comfort show. Thank you for making this possible for us to watch!!!!
I was on the fence about trying this, as I’m not a cooking show kind of person, but I’ve got to say .. you really outdid yourselves. This was amazing, thank you.
I have been following only Unsolved and Tasty (Mostly Worth It and Rie) and have been wondering why Steven, Ryan and Shane have not shown up until I saw in the comments that they made a new company. I'm so glad I found Watcher. I loved loved loved Worth It but Homemade, with this episode 1, made me cry at how it's really well made. Steven has a golden touch when it comes to producing food videos.
It’s funny to see Steven’s hair in this video because I just watched the most recent Watcher Weekly and he dyed his hair. Lol. Either way, it looks good!
i love when they point out the differences in the thinness of the dough--the restaurant making it uniformly thin vs. the home version where the edges are thinner so that it won't tear as they fold it by hand. it's a cool reminder that the difference b/w restaurant & homemade isn't just taste but also technique! both use diff techniques that are well suited for their purposes
thank you so so much for putting CC on your videos! I appreciate it so much, so many channels don't bother go do that and it makes me happy especially when media companies do it so thank you! one note about the CC is that often times the captions covered the translation in Chinese w/ just "speaking Chinese" this makes it hard to read w/o moving or turning off CC so there where definitely a few sentences I missed because of that. otherwise great job w the CC, very good descriptions not just of words but of other sounds and who's speaking, thank you!
Literally just watched this twice fully two days in a row, so 4 times in two days, solely because of how wholesome it is... I've never had homemade dumplings but I've picked up everything I need this morning and I'm giving her a go
hey steven! thank you for making this episode :) as a chinese american, i really appreciate being represented and i grew up never really getting to see the blend of american and chinese culture in the media so thank you!
I love this. I feel like this is so universal. I dont have any Asian heritage but i think that everyone can relate to having those foods that bring back memories of their home, their childhood, and their culture. No matter where youre from i think thats something that everyone understands.
I love everything about this first episode! It is as Steven said previously that this series is like a grown-up version of Worth It. I love that I get to see Melody from ABG (Asian Boss Girls). I love that in both homemade and/vs restaurant, it hits home for me, and it's in #SpiritofLNY . I love how this episode made me laugh, knowing that Steven and Melody know the experience when cooking with mothers and grandmothers, and also that they had their own fun with the mini-challenge in between locations. After this episode, I will definitely crave for more from this series! I can't wait!

I SO love it when they are speaking Chinese with each other!!! As someone who is obsessed with different languages AND food, this episode is just perfect for me! Very well done Steven!
I don’t understand how they came up with so many incredible show ideas
NUFC 4444 what happens when people are allowed to spread their wings and breath. Buzz feed was literally suffocating their creativity
x0xtran9x0x true, I’m so happy they left
Ideas are easy. But they've managed to pull off every single one and that is extremely impressive! I'm proud of my boys ;w; ) Thy really coming into their own!
These are extensions of their interests.
Thank you so much for making this!
i thought you meant that empanadas was food for the gods and i agreed with you lolol
Lumpia and empanadas? Yes please! 🤤
Emily C I understand why they did their schedule the way they did but I feel like I want to binge watch all of their stuff!
Me, a Persian, who has never made dumplings with her family: the nostalgia 🥺🥺🥺
Honestly I teared up when you guys were making dumplings because all I could think about was how much I miss my grandma in the kitchen showing me how to make Persian kotlets as a kid.
Love Melody. Invite her again. I just love her "aura" with Steven!
"You know how to make an empanada? Then you're hired." I laughed so hard, it's true, the empanada is the Latinx version of a dumpling! so cool
There has to be an episode on jewish homemade latkes versus jewish deli latkes. Come out to Minneapolis/St. Paul my bubbe can make a mean latke and I know of the only delicatessen that can even come close to home made quality
Kyle Katarn jewish deli latkes are never crunchy enough! Homemade ones are way better because they have such a good crunch
Jewish foods were NEVER cooked - just more generically German.
also matzah balls
Nah nah nah fam. I have the BEST GREEN BEAN LATKES! Better than potato latkes.
I love how they talk in their native language. It makes it seem more down to earth and brings the 'home' aspect into it even more!
Connected with Steven through this episode, he is so thoughtful and just such a ball of sunshine. So excited to see more of these series
"would you serve this to your costumers?"
**long pause**
Steven sarcastically speaking (I think?) Mandarin is hilarious to me. "I DID A GOOD JOB. SUPER GOOD JOB." The sarcastic voice exists in every language.
When she started crying from the homemade dumplings... I really felt that
I hope that this show continues after Covid. Watching this one and the other episode was wonderful.
If I'm being completely honest I fell in love with Ryan's stepmom and her "ok"
Comment for Watcher Weekly: I just binged all of the videos currently on your channel, and I just have to say that it is incredible what you guys are doing and what you have accomplished with this company/channel. You really have something special here; the love and hard work that you put into your company and content really shines through all that you do. Every person who has made this become a reality is an amazing individual, and I wish you all the best as you continue to work and laugh together. I look forward to watching everything you have to offer.
P.S. I would join your Patreon but alas I am a broke college student. I will be buying merch though, I can promise you that!
Why did I start to tear up when they were tasting the second batch? I’m not even Chinese
chipsndips SAME 😭
I guess nostalgia for your family is universal ^^
Same. Then I started thinking about my Granny sending me home with a sack of cheese biscuits and cried for 15 minutes
brb gonna go home to spend time with my mom & grandma and figure out how to record her cooking her homemade Mexican food dishes. I would hate to see that tradition go away. Thank you so much for this, the internet needs more content like this.
i feel like this show is so culturally significant and i can't wait for more
I love Chef Shirley Chung! Her restaurant is seriously SO GOOD and the food is fun! So happy to see Ms Chi's getting some more attention, she deserves it!!
I’m so excited to see more food, especially Asian representation because while people acknowledge our food is good, they don’t appreciate it.
I want to learn but have never been taught. This is why I am loving this show! I want to incorporate a lot of cultures into my future family's household because I want them to experience great food! ❤
Why is there only 4 of these? I love this format and the mom is so wholesome. The way she cooks is amazing.
Love,

"I can literally drink vinegar"
*music stops*
Where's the lie tho it's so good
*Pizza time stops
Black vinegar isn't as harsh and has other flavors. Red vinegar too.
Tyler Soap THANK YOU vinegar cravings are so real
Yess love vinegar!!
Chef Shirley is amazing - go check out her restaurant if youre in LA!
Watching this really made me miss that
this show is already so soft and comforting, it’s definitely going to be my go to comfort show I can already tell
Now that I binged each homemade episode I cried at every one of them. The love these families put into their food is humbling. For people who don’t have family it’s beautiful to see. TY Steven Lim & crew! 💚
yoooo at 12:54 when she switched from english to mandarin.... i related so much. I swear I can never go through conversation at home without mixing english and mandarin
quaintleaf exactly,,, some things you just cant convey in one language
Me and my friends flip between korean and english so fast and often sometimes we forget that there are people that cant do that and have to concentrate to make sure we’re not rude and speaking in only korean
Loving this series already. "Ok"... All my cooking is going to include an "ok" move from now on 👍
this video means a lot to me.
I cannot wait for this show to have new episodes! I adore this show concept already!
The resturaunt chef seems soooo nice! I adore her energy!
im crying and i dont know why
midway through this show, when the mom said they make dumpling wrappers as a family, i just remembered how mothers prepare food with love and pass it on to future generations. it's special.
i lost my mom like 10 years ago and i will never have her homecooked meal again. 🥺
I really love the editing in this? It feels really professional and neat, I'm in love!
I finally got the chance to watch after a horrible week, and I am sold. This show made my heart just melt. I'm not of the Asian culture but this still brought back memories of the feelings I got when I baked cheesecakes with my Grandma.
AHHHHH looks amazing and super fun to make. I’m inspired to make homemade dumplings now ☺️
This made my heart feel like a dumpling. Warm and filled with good things.
This was so pure and wholesome can’t wait to see more of this series
This video was so special. I felt all the love and warmth of the food and family. And when she said she had a flash of her grandma, I started crying.
Thank you for keeping us fed, Mr. Lim. I’m so excited for this series to satiate my hungry, homesick heart
coming from someone who was born knowing NOTHING about my mothers family (i just recently found out about my chinese roots months ago, and im turning 17 in a couple of weeks) i didn't expect this series to hit me as hard as it did. they definitely weren't wrong when they said that this would be an emotional series. steven and the crew definitely worked hard and i can feel the heart of this project, the warmth really translates well in this medium and i just want to genuinely thank you for bringing home to me.
"i could drink vinegar by itself" *music screeches to a halt*
Ariza R me: *screaming in shook*
This is straight-up my mom tho like you often hear about people putting hot sauce on all their food not my mom no no no she'll put vinegar on everything, the other day she pulled out the vinegar while eating a quesadilla....
HONESTLY THOUGH I'm with Melody on this, black vinegar in particular is sooooo good 😂
steven!!!! how come you make such wholesome content!!?? i know im late to the party but i love the shows and watcher of course! i hope you ryan and shane never stop creating bc i am now such a huuuude fan. i really feel like i know you guys and i alwyas catch myself smiling when watching anything you guys create and that is such a huge plus and somehting that i am totally grateful for,
Fantastic, amazing, iconic, almost made me cry, I'm hungry now
"Food gives you a type of feeling and joy that no other food gives you." I cried during this episode because for me food also equals family... And reminds me of my grandma. This is my new fave show on all of RUclips. Seems cruel that we have to wait a few more weeks until the next episode.
The end actually made me tear up
This episode just gives me the same feeling that I get when cooking with my grandma while making some basic Lebanese foods, that we all learned from my grandpa that was from Lebanon and all that. Got me really emotional so I can say that this will for sure be my #1 comfort show. Thank you for making this possible for us to watch!!!!
"Cmon asian kids lets do this again!"
I was on the fence about trying this, as I’m not a cooking show kind of person, but I’ve got to say .. you really outdid yourselves. This was amazing, thank you.
This was by far one of the coolest shows that I have ever watched.
"I could literally drink vinegar"

thank you so so much for putting CC on your videos!
Such a beautiful start of a series. :) I live in a different country as my mom, and watching this made me homesick. Good job, Steven! :) 恭喜你!新年快樂🍾️🎉🎊
