Growing up with an Asian dad and hearing from some other Asian friends about their dads it’s soo nice to see a father that can show his emotions and the compassion and love for his son. big 🥺 energy
when he spoke about taking the food to school and trying to cover the smell it reminded me of something a friend of mine once said. they are from southeast asia and never used utensils growing up, just used their hands to eat. they had a traumatic memory shortly after moving to the UK, going to an english school for the first time and using their hands to eat which prompted other kids to stare and make fun of them, and after that they only ever used utensils in public, even now. it makes me sad that my friend, Steven, and others are made to feel ashamed of their cultures when in other countries and feel like they have to hide it. BUT it made me so happy to see him so proud cooking these dishes, using chopsticks/hands to eat, and just generally celebrating their food and culture, they looked so comfortable and happy :) i love this show because it’s so wholesome and i’m always learning about different foods and cultures, Stephen’s love of Asian food is contagious and it makes this very white english gal want to try making them too!! Food really is love and i’m so glad the people on this show share it with us :’)

*Tip for when working with onions:* Wet a paper towel and put it next to the onions while you cut/grind them. Onions make you cry because the things they release look for the closest water source, which is usually your tear ducts. When you put the paper towel, the onion stuff goes to the water on the paper towel instead.
Or if you're having a bad day, just use it as free emotional release.
