Airfix Hurricane Mk.1 - Build With Me! Part 3 - Painting

- The Hawker Hurricane was a fighter aircraft that saw service with the RAF during the Second World War. In this video I complete a long-format build of the Hawker Hurricane Mk.1 Plastic model kit in 1/72 scale.
The version I have here is from the Starter Set (or "gift set" as they are sometimes called) which comes with some small pots of paint, a brush and some cement. The perfect start for a beginner!
The aim of this series is to give you the chance to quite literally "build with me" - so if you have this kit and want to give it a go, this is the perfect video for you!
Alternatively, if you are a beginner, there are lots of helpful, simple and easy techniques that can be found in this series - so definitely worth a watch!
In this third part of the series, i complete the majority of the painting, starting to bring the model to life!
Watch Part 1 of the series here:
• Airfix Hurricane Mk.1 ...
Part 2:
• Airfix Hurricane Mk.1 ...
Make sure you subscribe so that you don't miss the next episode in the series where I complete the decals of the model . . Stay tuned for that!

Apologies if there are any editing errors in the video - I recorded this series as I build the model so there were very long takes and lots of footage to edit. The activity in this video took about 1.5 hours which was then edited to less than half an hour - still quite a sizeable amount of work (and the perfect chance for errors to slip in)!
The audio quality in this series is known to be slightly lower than my normal videos due to the use of the in-built microphone in my camera - the use of my "good" mic would be very difficult to do as it isn't compatible with the camera. This is an area I'm looking at improving and overcoming in the future

Nice looking fighter plane RAF United Kingdom
Thanks!
Nice looking see that I'm not the only one that gets paint on my hands then
If you look at some of the wargaming crowd, they are covered in paint - they actually use their skin to check the tones and things
This series is very helpful! I'm building the same kit now. Fascinating to watch your experience with it. Thanks, and nice work!
i'm glad it was helpful!
looking good so far
Thanks!
Looking good, can't wait to see the final product!
soon!
Looks great! Waiting for the decal video! Built a 1:48 Hurricane from 4D in silver, still new to the hobby, so a little intimidated by camafloge painting. This video did alleviate some of my anxiety! Thanks again for sharing!
I'm glad you found it helpful! The decal video should be out in a few weeks :D
The best thing to do with camo is just have a bash. Perhaps buy a cheap model just to try it out on, something that you don't mind getting a bit messy :D
We have been away for a week so it was going to be no modelling period! I just grabbed this kit to do if we had a bit of spare time. Also grabbed some sprue cutters, some cocktail sticks and a sanding stick. Not built a kit like that for years. It has been real fun using the glue from the box and then the provided paints too. Only used water as paint thinners. Not completed painting it yet but have had a lot of fun doing this and would never have considered doing it this way without seeing this series. Would definitely recommend experienced modellers to have a go or even someone just trying the hobby out. Not sure mine will look as good as the one here but thanks for inspiring me to try and have some fun too.
I'm glad i could help inspire you to try something different :D
@@ModelMinutes I completed the kit and painted/decalled it now. I am very pleased with the result. It really was fun not worrying about detailing, airbrushing and so on. If someone wanted to get back into the hobby again or just starting out they really are worth the money. And seeing a series like yours will show them the basics too.
Hurricane looks awesome, I'm currently building the hawker typhoon Ib. I've been home alot this year after being diagnosed with bowel cancer in January, a friend of mine suggested taking on this as a hobby. Thoroughly enjoying it very satisfying, definitely helped keep my mind busy. Seen few of your videos now and they are very clear and helpful. Think I will try doing the panel lines/weathering soon. Looking forward to next video. 😀
Who knows, in real life those planes probably were done by house paint brush. In the 1969 movie " The battle of Britain " that's the way some of the spit fires looked.
Wishing you a speedy recovery! I'm glad that my videos have helped occupy you and give you some helpful tips for your own projects
When they painted the real ones they had no time to get prissy about perfect painting, TIME was of the essence: )
It's great to see some brushpainting with good results! I've recently started to brushpaint tanks in 1:35th scale and it is hard but so rewarding. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching!
Brings back many happy memories
:D
Thank you for this video. thank you very much. I am following your techniques to help me finish a kit from 1967....Revell Spitfire Mk 1 ....which is very similar. It is 1/32 scale though.
When you were applying the dark earth colour to your pair of wings the video illustrated very clearly how quickly the acrylic paint was drying...even though you had diluted the paint. Remarkable.
Yes, acrylcs can be touch dry in about 5 - 15 minutes, but it can take a few hours for them to be cured all the way through. It does mean that new layers can get added quite quickly, but if using alcohol thinners, if you do it too soon you run the risk of stripping/disturbing the previous layer if it hasn't dried enough
@@ModelMinutes Thanks for this top tip!
This is gonna help my painting for future models so much, nice video
Glad to hear that!
Looks great dude
Thanks!
I enjoyed this I love the hurricane and spitfire this inspires me to do scale modelling
Glad to hear it!
I liked this Video. I just built Hawker Hurricane a month ago from Arma Hobby with black and white painting on the bottom.
I've heard good things about the Arma one, but yet to try it for myself. I built an airfix hurricane with the black and white underside many years ago
Really enjoying this series - I was 'sort off' following along with the non-starter set kit that give the option of the two blade prop etc. However you're a bit ahead of me now as I haven't had a chance to start painting it. I have to say you've achieved a good result with those Humbrol acrylics, I swapped over to Hataka a good few years ago as I could never get on with them. Nice job.
Glad you like them!
*Paint with brush a full model isn't easy, congrats you did it well!*
Thank you so much 😀
painting!
So much painting!
Re painting borders such as wings.. if you paint 90 degrees to the wing edge you can't accidentally go underneath and the edge of the wing gives the straight edge you want. You're skilled enough to avoid whoopsies Matt but that might help newbies :)
Re camouflage.. newbies might like to lightly outline the design in pencil to give them something to follow.
good ideas
I'm really liking this series. I'm new to all of this and yet to build a model, so it's been great watching you go through each step in detail, with a good explanation along with it.
A lot of the videos I've watched on other channels make it seem like an airbrush is essential for a good finish, and because I can't afford one yet I was worried about how a brush only job might turn out, but you've shown here that you can achieve a very respectable result!
I'm a big fan of Japanese aircraft and so I'm going to be cutting my teeth on a Hasegawa 1/48 B5N Kate which I'll be ordering next week.
If you're taking request for future projects then I'd like to suggest a Japanese build! I'm thinking something more unusual like a Ki-27. Or perhaps an A5M, D3A, Ki-32, Ki-10 or F1M.
Either way, great work, and I'm looking forward to more of this series :)
Thanks for the suggestion! I have some Japanese subjects in my stash so maybe you'll see some in the future.
But yeah, all the "pro" modellers make it out that an airbrush is a necessity. Whilst I have one, I'm not sure I agree . . .
Nice video for beginners Matt. But you should really get into doing things like masking the canopy to paint the framing. Masking the edges after painting the undersides will help too. Plus I would stop doing brush painting except for small details. Airbrushing or rattle cans is a better way to go. Plus do an undercoat spray first. I use a Hicote spray can for that. You can get them in various colours. Keep up the good work buddy.
Thanks, I do cover those other techniques in my other build videos
Gloss coat not needed. Smooth paint is all that is needed. Wet sand with very high grit micro mesh.
i'd probably end up stripping the paint or sanding the details off lol
keep it up
I'll try :D
Hi Matt
It looks like you had a lot of fun with this one
you must however thin the varnish and i promise you will reap the benefits on finish matt.
Also you can clean up acrylic paint from the window panels with a cocktail stick nice and easy mate. will watch the last vid on this
Hi John, the varnish was thinned with water 21:10 and i mention the cocktail stick at 14:10
@@ModelMinutes sorry you did mention cocktail sticks mate I made the comment before finishing watching the rest of the video
@@johnparker1696 no worries, i'm sure we've all done it
I built this kit some 3-4 years ago and it was a very detailed kit like this one enough to do it again
@@johnparker1696 I’ve probably done 3 or 4 of these now 😂
Just a thought for filming.. I know you said the camera was in your way once. At the National Archives the camera mount was way above the work surface. Maybe a selfie stick but vertically mounted with a 3d printed base? That may hold a phone camera a couple of feet away from you.
i've been thinking of different solutions, but i certainly could look into something 3d printed
I have had experience were the Vallejo model colour acrylic seperate with Tamiya thinners I have been using Vallejo medium thinner 70.524
It is a really good product would recommend
thanks for the info!
Great video . I’d quite like you to do an airliner with gloss white fuselage . My issue is getting rid of join lines and painting without brush strokes
Great suggestion!
you should do a video of your work station area showing your set up
Maybe one day
Just nearly completed my Hurricane mk II from Revell. And i really think were the differences between versions so significant? Surely you can't see them at the first glance.
The early mk1 had fabric covered wings whilst the later version were metal skinned, I think you would be able to notice that :P
Hey matt, great job so far! are you going to make an F4 phantom in the near future, i think it would look cool with a little concrete diorama
It's possible, I dont have any current plans but it could happen in the future
IIRC the bulletproof windscreen was the result of Hugh Dowding arguing of (I think American gangsters?) 'If they can have bulletproof windscreens so can my pilots!'
yeah, i've heard that too!
Nice build, the leading edge of the wing has always been tough for me.
yeah, it can be difficult
Try brushing towards the edge, not along it.
@@anthonyshipman3611 I shall, thank you.
i’m dreading the day when i have to mask the windows on my new B-36 Peacemaker model. 1-72 scale makes the windows very small, and the fact that there are so many panes makes me hurt inside
Yeah, I recently did a bf110 and whilst it doesn't have loads of glass on the cockpit it still took like 3 days
Have ypu built a Australian vehicle on your channel?
If so what do you recommend for a beginner
hmmm, not sure. I have built some RNZAF aircraft though
Ok
Like what?

A good brush painting can be pretty nice..............I use an airbrush and sometimes it can be overrated.
Very true!
What brand of paint do you use?
Bit of a mix, humbrol, Vallejo and Tamiya seem to be my paint choices at the moment
🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
:D
when I did these kits it was enamel paint
I used to use enamel almost exclusively, but have discovered the joys of acrylic
I also have a premiere in like an hour
nice!
@@ModelMinutes thanks
What about primer?
Airfix don’t include any in the starter set
@@ModelMinutes But there are many in stores.
@@arghons.hobby.workshop is it possible to paint a model without primer?
I have pro tip for You. Next time use wide brush.
so pro
Why is it taking so long to paint this kit I'm already done
What do you mean?
It looks carelessly , I am sorry. I made this starter kit using brush and paint from kit. I can send You photos of my Hurricane.
Are they on your instagram? I've seen that
maybe it was your twitter
or you could send them to me on my discord
@@ModelMinutes Yes. Hurricane is brush painted by starter paints. Spitfire is airbrush painted by same paints.
