      In my experience this happens just as often with “spades”. I was trying to teach poker to a girl I was seeing once who actually legitimately broke up with me and left because she thought I was being racist for calling a spade a spade. I tried to explain, but she wouldn’t believe me, this was before smart phones, but I did have a laptop and she refused to look at it.
      TBH things weren’t going great between us anyways so it wasn’t a big loss, but it was so frustrating that it really stuck with me.

  • @JudithOpdebeeck
    @JudithOpdebeeck 3 года назад +33

    Hey here’s a really cool subtlety to make this even better: shuffle them. You can totally get away with shuffling the deck while doing a key card, IF you do an overhand shuffle. Just make sure that you know about where those cards are in the deck, and make sure to keep that block as is. That way the couple of cards you care about are still in the same order, while also shuffling, thus proving it’s not a key card effect. While it is.
    This fooled me badly when I first saw it. I was like “I saw you shuffling them, it can’t be a key card!” And it was.

    • @DWish808
      @DWish808 3 года назад +4

      Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well. You have to be the one doing the shuffling though or the other person could do an "every other card perfect shuffle" and that would screw it up, especially if the cut before the shuffle was on those cards. It's much safer and easier to use the method he used. It also allows the other person to be involved physically with the cards making it seem more legit.

      I love the way you think... I believe I can make it even more diabolical:
      Tell Gordon you'll not only show him three tricks; you'll have him select his favorite, and you'll teach him!
      Show Gordon 3 tricks-- throw two really good ones in there and one borderline-amateur trick-- then tell him to choose which one he'd like to learn the most. After he responds, pretend to go off-script and ask him whether they all were good offerings, or if he felt any of were sub-par. Really make him sympathize that you might not have presented him with three amazing tricks, because you *really wanted to astound him.*
      Once he's admitted the weakest trick (provided he's not smart enough to say the trick he already named), whichever one he then names, proceed to teach him that instead. Now-- just as you said-- you've shown him 3 card tricks, he got to select his favorite, and you taught him one!
      Tl;dr -- teach him the crappiest of 3 tricks.
      I feel like a supervillain for thinking of that.

      @@sergioaugusto166 Nope, the trick still works. If the deck is cut between the two cards, the result is your "bottom card"( which you already know) is once again the bottom card. Then their chosen card becomes the top card. Another cut (doesn't matter if it's 1 card or 51 or anything between), then your card will once again be on top of their card. If they do not cut again after they managed to cut between the two cards, then you have the case where your "bottom card" is the last card you flip and their card is the first one you flipped just like how he stated it in the video.

    There is a slight problem that could arise if when doing all the cuts you or the person you are doing the trick for coincidently cuts exactly so the key card and the chosen card are apart. I have had that problem happen a couple times when doing a key card based trick and doing the cut as many times as you want to "mix" the cards especially with an older deck or if you don't square up the deck after doing the initial cut. I know it is unlikely that the cards are cut to split those two cards apart from each other but if it does happen you won't know and there is no fail safe for it.

    At first I'm thinking there's a chance they'll cut right in between and screw up the trick. Then I'm like wait a minute, if they cut right in between, it'll be the same as the starting state, which obviously still works. So cutting doesn't change the circular order so even if you cut infinity times it'll still work? Literally never thought about this until now; mind = blown.

    parent-child goals, please teach us the way. but on topic, my uncle showed me this almost exact trick while i was young, except that he picked it up and shuffle it randomly (like a hindu shuffle) and found my card without the final twist. this final twist is great, im going to use it, thanks for sharing! one tip i have is that while setting the deck down you can also rotate it 180 so that it tilts to you for a brief peek, so it doesn't appear too obvious you are looking at the bottom. imagine holding the top part of your phone to turn it 180 and then continue to turn it back.

    Isn't there a chance one of the cuts would separate the key from the chosen card? If it happens to cut between them?

    • @Mugsi
      @Mugsi 2 года назад +1

      Not a problem! As someone else pointed out, as long as it isn't shuffled, it still won't change the order! It just means that the key card will be the very last one! Take a deck of cards and try it out for yourself!

    Oh come on....
    I've watched magic in general and Brian for years. So I know the basics of magic.
    But its been a while since I watched anything related to magic and this trick got me...
    When he said key card principle I was so mad, like I should have known that instantly, but Brian's performance got me.
    I was annoyed at first, but now I realize one thing.
    If it got me that good, then it would be amazing for people who knew nothing about magic. Sometimes I forget that not everyone knows magic, so even the simplest tricks can get them.

  • @MrKahrum

    i recut to put the key (the previous trick's object usually) on the bottom, then snap off the outside cards by tossing the deck to my other hand, while retaining the key and current object. if done right, you can then do it again, and grab the two object cards from 2 and 3 tricks ago.

    I'm 55 now. I've been doing that trick since I was about 8. I used to make money from friends and family on it. I would tell them, we are going to bet. If I'm wrong I'll give you $5. If I'm right.. you give me $.50. I would then hold a card as you did, and say... I bet you $.50 with a 10 to 1 odds, that the next card I flip over is your card. They'd always, especially other kids, get excited and say YES! Then I'd flip over their proper card! Made probably $10 in 2 years as a kid with this. LOL

    What I like to do is to hold up the first card and say "Will you be amazed if the next card I turn over is your card?" then I say "No, no. Not this card" and go a couple of cards further just to sell that I won't turn over their actual card.

    I did this trick a lot as a kid. I did iy often enough that I ran into the infamous Key Card Cut (the separates the key card from their card). I was embarrassed. but played it off as "I'm a kid, so I messed something up. Oh, well..." (pouty face), followed by mark saying" That's alright, try again!"
    But that one in a million fail chance irked me. I had to fix it! From then on, I changed it up. I'd do a multi-pile cut after placing the marks card on the top (break deck into 5-6 small piles, then "randomly" place piles onto new deck, always placing bottom key-card pile onto the top pile somewhere in the new deck). Then a quick face-up fan to let them see their card was still in there (and mentally note what their card is from the key-card, making the key-card unneeded from then on). Gather the cards back up, shuffle. Let them shuffle. do the flip until seeing their card, pass it by a few, then "The next one I flip is your card." It adds a step or two, but no possibility of making the same error.
    Another variant is to stope the trick after the face-up fan, and move on to another trick "remember that card, and we'll some back to it later."
    It's always fun to make a return to the 1st unfished trick as your last trick, or even as part of another one.

    So I only knew 1 magic trick that my uncle had taught me before 1 day he showed me this trick with this exact presentation of going past it, asking would you be impressed and then going back to my card, except he forced it so he could shuffle the cards too. He showed it to me over and over for months and I couldn't work it out, being only i wanna say 10 or 11. So, OUT OF SPITE! I went online and learnt a bunch of magic tricks to show him up to get him to teach me this trick and now I still regularly perform magic to my friends as a hobby and it's something I love doing.

    But, if they cut the cards an odd number times you have a 1 in 10 chance of failing. If they cut the cards 10 times you now have a 50% chance of failing. Not a very good trick if you have a failing chance. 97.3% of the greatest tricks can't fail. So this is just a waste of time if you want to try and do magic or try to just fool a group of friends

    I know it's innocent but first what rock must you live under not to know a club? Next question is, since you know trick is predicated on him not knowing your card, why would you visually display with facial expressions that you have another club? Don't attempt to keep secrets nor commit a crime. I feel this girl would tell you her debit card password if you asked her not to.
