Hi, I enjoy watching your videos. I am a retired auto mechanic that owned an automotive air conditioning and radiator shop from 1973 to 2002. I installed air conditioners every year into cars that came with out air conditioning. So we had to upgrade the cooling fans on all and upgraded the radiators on a few. My father owner Dover Auto Electric, so I was brought up working on electrical systems. I had a customer (friend) that put V8 engines in MG's. I recored radiators for him that were thicker than OEM and they worked fine for the job. But on one build he used chrome rings and the motor built so much heat that it never cooled properly. I also worked on radiators for some stock car racers that had exhaust restrictors. In one case I think there was extra heat added by engine friction and in another case the exhaust restrictors backed up heat in the engine. Of coarse many of the early engines had water pump driven fans that we just upgraded to one with more blades and pitch. On my Chevrolet Suburban that came with dual air conditioning evaporators I installed a HD fan clutch on the engine driven fan and a pusher electric fan mounted in front of the condenser.

Hi Dave, I'm guessing that the ECU could control an electric water pump. Unlike a fan which is either on or off, it is best if a water pump is on most of the time but its speed is varied using pulse width modulation. If that was your aim, what sort of relay would you use? I expect the standard relays hate being turned on and off many times a second. Cheers David P

Is 1 30amp relay enough for multiple coils , ie if one draws say 5-6amps at full load would this work the relay a little too hard longevity wise?

    • @davenonameforrester
      @davenonameforrester 4 года назад

Hi, your question depends on a few things... how many coils? 1..8... 4 ... 12???
Also depends on how many of them fire at the same time as well.
But typically yes, 30 amps would be fine... as you might have two coils charging at a time ... maybe at absolute worst 3 in a charging state for 2 milliseconds - might then draw 15amps total on that circuit.

If the sleeving isn'too long, use a length of 1.6mm/1/16" weld wire with a loop taped to the wiring to pull it through.
With longer lengths, maybe run some mig wire through and tape it to the wiring to pull through?
The comment about running the fans to see it a fuse upgrade is required is, maybe, a bit questionable - but if the fan doesn't have a current rating, might be needed.
I often use fused relays - relays that incorporate a fuse in their housing - any thoughts on these - pro' or con'?
Oh, and these alleged 'marketing guys' can STFU - if they exist ;-)

Sometimes its a tricky process to get the wire size and the current rating spot on for if there is no information available I agree.
Have you used a different method or do you have a good trick of trying to find the current requirements of the device you are wiring up?
Power distribution modules are fantastic for this exact reason!

Hey Dave - tell the pricks in marketing. Go suck up Hawaii 5-0-SCOMO. He's the Aussie god of marketing. Like Covid leave it to the doers. Stay out of it.
Just like how Velocity - Ruined Wheeler Dealers because they Pandered to the Americans and played Entertainment.
If the goal is to help stop the support department being overwhelmed with, "I don't know what a left handed screw driver is" because I am tight ass. Just sell it with to be installed by a professional sticker on the box.
Videos are fine. Explanation is fine. If you want to shorten. You don't have to show every and or procedure of wire being crimped and installed. Or crimped terminal.
If the viewer after seeing it once can't work it out. Then their genetics need a few more generations of evolution and taking on a fairly well sorted setup on was always beyond their abilities.
You would be surprised how much people who take interest in such technical - dare I say entertainment. Like being told Why this, why that. Even if they know why already.
The short explanation of the power steering pump was perfect. When you go to wire it up and testing. Electric pump - Hydraulic power steering I expect in conversion for to be seen more often. Something that might be of more interest as time goes on.
