      True one could cosplay just for themselves if they like. Or you can do so for as many people as you are comfortable with ( Instagram, Facebook and the like) cons may overwhelm someone and aren't nearly the only way to share your love of any character(s).

    i think something to add about the age restriction thing though might be: Cosplay appropriately! if you're a younger cosplayer you should try to avoid super revealing/innapripriate cosplays. even if you like the character a lot, there can be a lot of weirdos at cons and you should be careful. ):

    • @samhumphrey8966
      @samhumphrey8966 5 лет назад +140

      If someone who is young but really likes a revealing character then maybe they could modify the cosplay. They could use some aspects of their outfit but make it more age appropriate. The cosplay will likely still be recognizable and the young person will now be safe to have fun dressed as a character they like.

      Happens a lot in Asia sadly. I'm a brown man and went as Levi from AoT, and I got told once that my skin colour doesn't match and that I should use makeup to change my skin colour 😡.
      Cosplay is about showing your love or enthusiasm about something you like. Some 'professional' cosplayers forget this. Since it was the first time I did cosplay, it cut a bit deep. But I'm passed that now and just do what I want. I do love female characters, and I some point I might get the courage to go as one.

    I'm SO glad somebody knows the actual history about cosplay. It did start in the US at a Sci-Fi convention. A Japanese reporter came to the US and saw that, went back to Japan and wrote an article about it and it blew up over there. Japan took cosplay up to the point where people know it today.

    • @mjhedgehog873

      cosplay is Ashley way more popular in Japan then in the US believe it or not it actually started in the US was just true however it really did not become popular and till at least in the 90s and it actually being conned by a Japanese photographer who decided to call it the word cosplay and there's a lot of people reckon that they own Costco and reckon it's a Japanese thing it's just really really popular over there and they they've rules for their cosplay are incredibly different

    on another note, most of my cosplays r closet cosplay or bought! it's perfectly ok 2 buy them!! the 4 that i have i bought bc i either 1, didn't have the clothes 2 get as close as possible 2 the actual, 2, didn't like how i looked in casual, or 3, simply wanted the canon costume!!

    Age can be a cool factor in cosplay too! I started cosplaying when I was 11, and my first one was Pidge from Voltron. She's about my height, and I had that awkward middle schooler look just like her! I also did Steven from Steven Universe, which I've usually just seen adult guys do, but since I was his height and had that soft baby face, it works!

    • @boohooter23
      @boohooter23 4 года назад

      I almost went with Pidge as my first cosplay, but I ended up cosplaying Haggar from the same show because I naturally look pretty darn close to Pidge irl and I could hide earplugs under the hood (I have a condition where I hear things louder than normal and I get overloaded easier. Earbuds help me cope.)

    So, question relating to #2: I make costumes which I wear every year to my state's Renaissance Festival. So the word for me up to this point is Rennie, not Cosplayer. Because of that my costumes aren't characters per se, they're more roles. I'll be A faun, or A wizard, or A jester, etc. With Renfairs the character backstory doesn't matter so much as you are already defined by your role in the pre-established world of the fair. My costumes are all my original designs and some are very elaborate and expensive to make, I'm very proud of them. My question is this: If I wanted to re-use one of these costumes when I attend a comic-con, what adaptations would I need to make to better fit in with the cosplayers? Do I need to come up with a backstory for my character? Do I need to find a fandom that has a character in my role and adapt it to be that person? Can I enter costume contests with an original design, as opposed to a pre-existing character? Do you ever see the two worlds, Renfairs and Comicons, collide in this way? I know I've seen Cosplayers at Renfairs, lots of Disney, Dr. Whos, and Harry Potter characters in particular. No judgement from me, they add to the fun. But I don't know if that works the other way around.

    • @mus1c3gg
      @mus1c3gg 6 лет назад +9

      I think you don't need a backstory or anything! Even for a contest. I think cosplay is about wearing any kind of costume, so it doesn't have to be a specific character :)

    • @AnyaPanda
      @AnyaPanda  6 лет назад +9

      You definitely don't need a backstory or anything, you can totally wear whatever you want to conventions and cosplay contests. For instance, many people wear general steampunk clothing, not canon characters but rather outfits they've made and designed themselves from a genre of costuming that they enjoy. Basically, you can whatever you want, there are no restrictions.

    • @Evibbles
      @Evibbles 6 лет назад +4

      not all costumes at cons are cosplays, some dress up because they are just wanting to have fun or are proud of their work and want to show people. Literally all you need to do if anyone asks what character/fandom you are dressed as is tell them it's an original design based of a certain species/class of character, it won't change how amazing it looks and honestly knowing that you designed it completely and didn't base it of a character may actually impress people more than finding some kind of character

    • @lizeon196
      @lizeon196 6 лет назад +1

      a week late, but i've absolutely seen people dressed as fauns at an anime convention and other people still loved it, so yes you can totally wear whatever kind of costume you want to a convention!

    Here in the UK the age restrictions at Comic Con is 16. My birthday isn’t long after Comic Con so I’m kinda sad that I have to go with an adult & I can’t sell my own art or anything there. I would love to go with my sister just the two of us so that we can cosplay together. I’m still gonna cosplay as D. Va this year but I’ll probably be stuck with my parents shouting at me because I’m walking around “too awkwardly” & because I’m too embarrassed to actually look at anything because I don’t want to be judged by them 😂

    Made a costume for both myself and a friend for this year and ir will be her first time doing this. We had a third person so we could do Lotte, Sucy and Akko from LWA. Our Lotte dropped out, lol.
    I am actually glad that I was compared to and given the Sucy role as I am not keen on skimpy outfits for myself. Plus my attitude naturally 'fit.' Though I have a feeling even with that supposed "modesty" I will still be harassed. Lol.
    It comes down to if people who interact with you have boundaries. DON'T BE AFRAID TO SET BOUNDARIES FOR YOURSELF!! If someone gets too close and you don't like that, express it. 'Cause it doesn't matter what you wear sometimes. I was something different last year ('human' male Majora a friend designed) and people kept touching me without permission. Including touching my wig, touching my shoulder or back or my mask. I had to tell them it wasn't polite to just touch, and I wasn't comfortable. They stopped and apologized. Just speak your mind on that, be respectful, BE CAREFUL and have fun!

    Another misunderstanding about cosplay is that you can't cosplay as a character if you have a different color skin, type of body, age, gender, etc.
    My friends were recently talking about who has a "anime face" and who doesn't, who should cosplay and who shouldn't just based on the aspect.

    I did wanna comment about the age restriction part only to say to underage cosplayers PLEASE be careful of adult cosplayers and I would HIGHLY suggest just not befriending adult cosplayers at all and avoiding them aside for pictures and meetups. If an adult cosplayer doesn't see any need to put up a barrier with you and wants to befriend you despite you being underage this person has a high chance of being a predator. There have been a lot of predatory people in cosplay communities who go after teenagers specifically because they take advantage of their lack of experience. This goes to adult cosplayers who AREN'T looking to prey on teens as well, no matter how cool the teen might be stop normalizing becoming friends with them despite the age difference you could be endangering them into trusting someone who will try to hurt them. Cosplay is for everyone but I wanted to throw that warning out on regards to age.

    Great vid, great channel!
    I recently this year went to my first convention, it was a little bit smaller, and I almost didn't dress up because of many insecurities, like the kind you touched on in this video - things like not being anime, or not having enough time / money to make my own costume... I actually went as a general Alice in Wonderland, and I was so nervous and embarrassed. And it turned out I loved it so very much! I had a great time, and actually was amazed at how many people we're in all different types of cosplay, not just anime. And so many people recognized and complimented my attempt! It was a great experience, and I'm so glad I did it and didn't back out because I was embarrassed!
    I think costume play is something that almost everyone should try at least once lol! it can be intimidating if you look it up on the internet and see all the people who can afford amazing wigs, and handmade costumes that take many many months. But the truth is, as long as you are in costume and playing, you are cosplaying and people will appreciate it and you will have a great time!
    And as you said on other things - the people that don't, are wrong!

    I was surprised that the conventions you've gone to required a parent to accompany minors -- I can see it for maybe kids under 13 or so, but when I was in high school, a group of friends and I went to Megacon for a day and the parent who drove us dropped us off. I was barely 14 and looked about 9. Maybe it's a Canada thing, or possibly you're younger than me and I can't tell? It's probably a good idea to take a parent if you are either really young, don't have friends to go with, or just if you want to! I'd definitely suggest going in a group for younger people, though, if you won't be bringing your parents, and possibly only going for one day of the convention so you don't have to handle hotel rooms. I usually pick Saturday because for three-day conventions stuff is winding up on Friday and winding down on Sunday. I'm 24 but I honestly would never go to a con without someone else with me -- I can't drive and I'm disabled, so that's part of it, but I just don't feel comfortable in crowds. I lost my wallet last time I went to a con, and my friend, who drove us there in exchange for my parents helping pay for gas and the hotel room, was a lifesaver and looked around for it (and found it) when I couldn't walk anymore. My two cents on an old video, because you clearly need my two cents C: (you don't, you have been to twenty kajillion cons and I have been to three)

      Rockstar wigs are a bit expensive but really nice. They also donate a wig for every wig people buy from them! I have a beautiful pink wig with blonde highlights from them and a dark grey wig and I absolutely love them. They’re great quality but like most lace fronts they shed a little but not nearly as much as other brands I’ve tried! Hope this helps!

    How have I never heard of Amino? Time to make all the friends! :D
    (2) I have a choco-mint "outfit" in which I hand out chocolate and mint candies, that's more kawaii culture than cosplay though. :3
    (3) A follow-up concern I have to buying is: whether to buy it online or to commission locally. There are many websites today that have a catalogue of costumes, made to order, some even have the option to receive your measurements to ensure the best fit.
    (5) No sexy cosplay for either! I choose character designs that cover up mah body. The whole "sex sells" perception of cosplay is really jarring, the attention those cosplays get really perpetuates this unfortunate misconception.

      (3) you can do either, just check the reviews or talk to someone who's had there's done by commission.
      Hope you have a nice day and keep cosplaying

    It makes me sad whenever I see someone who feels that they can't cosplay a character because their skin color, gender, height, bust, body type etc are different. If you like the character, rock the hell out of your cosplay and don't worry about it because in the end, you share a passion with thousands of people who will cheer you on ❤️

    True on that anime one! I have been cosplaying since 2013, and while I started cosplaying anime/cartoon characters, I currently cosplay video game characters. Which I am more comfortable with, since I prefer video games over anime. c:

    On the age thing..
    You can OF COURSE cosplay as a under age person.. but be aware, some adults wants to spend evenings at cons.. being.. adults.. and having a minor present will pretty much ruin the mood.. so please be aware if you are a bit in the way.. :)

    Saying a cosplayer isn't a cosplayer if they buy their cosplay/commission it is like saying a furry isn't a furry if they don't make their fursuit.

    question: if i buy one part of my cosplay but make the most impressive parts and enter a contest, can i still win for craftsmanship? with my stevonnie cosplay i bought the era 3 gown but i made the shoes, sword (which is the biggest part of the cosplay), shield and i styled my wig. the sword and shield are the biggest parts of my cosplay and i made them from scratch so i was wondering if i could still enter.

    Great video! Thanks for sharing on this subject. I don’t know if you listen to podcasts but NWNerd podcast did a table talk on the subject of cosplay recently, give it a listen!👍

    It’s funny people say there’s an age limit to cosplay, even though kids wear costumes and pretend all the time.I know I did that all the time when I was a kid. I never called it cosplay (I wasn’t even aware of it back then), but really, that’s what it was.

    I’ve done theatre for a while now (and have acting experience) and I was just introduced to cosplaying .. I love both role playing & acting so I really want to start cosplaying. However, I’m young (so I can’t go out & buy stuff myself) & have a tendency to be hesitant to ask my parents for anything. I always feel bad for asking things.. but I really want to cosplay. Does anyone have any advice on how I can ask my parents about cosplaying? 😂

    I LOVE this!!! Your channel is legit a lifesaver for me as a new cosplayer! I’ve only been to 1.5 cons, just cuz I can’t travel (and I’m broke, lol) this year, I’m going back to San Japan and Mini Mini Con as they are in my city. But, I’m actually making my cosplay this coming year and even entering it into the cosplay contest! I started with buying it this year, and got nervous, but everyone LOVED my cos!! Anyone else going to San Japan and may want to meet up~?

    I really really hope that one day that the stigma over cosplayers buying their costumes goes away. I've met people who get so mad when they learn cosplayers buy theirs over making them, your cosplay is yours, no matter if you buy it or make it!
