The goal of Half-Life 2 : MMod is to enhance and expand gunplay, combat mechanics and the immersion factor by giving the Player more options and combat opportunities as well as refine how the Player handles his arsenal. Half-Life 2 : MMod also offers minor AI enhancements, extended abilities for combine soldiers, multiple bug fixes, enhanced visuals, VFX re-design, sound redesign and much much more, while keeping nearly every new feature in the mod totally optional.
A few points I would like to add to this review...
-The Emplacement Gun doesn't do more damage than the AR2 Pulse Rifle. Both deal 8 damage per shot. It probably only seems stronger, because you acquire it early in the game, where you fight the weaker Civil Protection instead of Overwatch Soldiers. It also of course has a ridiculously large ammo capacity. In its mounted state, it is even more powerful, dealing 15 damage per shot.
-The AI improvements also give the Combine the ability to jump. While that may seem negligible, it actually goes a long way. They can vault over obstacles to make up for limitations in their pathfinding, taking shortcuts they couldn't have in the original Half-Life 2, and sometimes escaping my grenades by jumping over a wall and taking cover behind it. This feature also makes the turret defence sequence in Nova Prospekt punishingly hard, because the Combine can now jump off the second floor balcony instead of suicidally running down the stairs to get gunned down by the turrets the player will likely set up there. Now they can more easily ambush your turrets to knock them down.
-The AI improvements also allow the Combine to use the secondary fire of any weapon, not just the MP7. Soldiers can use the secondary fire of the AR2 Pulse Rifle and SPAS-12 Shotgun as well.
-Projectile Weapons, as awesome as the feature is, is not without limitations. It does not give the guns bullet drop as you say, only bullet drag. So there is a delay before they reach their target at a distance, but they are not pulled down by gravity. For some people, I guess that is a good thing, as it is far less complicated, while still adding a touch of realism and enhanced gameplay.
-Projectile Weapons sadly do not effect Gunships, Choppers, Striders, and Turrets, which are still hitscan regardless of your settings. Only the handheld weapons wielded by the player and other NPCs fire actual projectiles. This is apparently due to scripting limitations according to the developer.
Adding to that -
- The Airboat gun can't be removed, as awesome as that would be.
- The jeep gun on the other hand, can refill its ammo by placing it back on the mount and taking it off again.
- You can get an addon on Moddb that makes the shotgun fire at semi-automatic instead of pump, and it is DELICIOUSLY overpowered. I try not to abuse it too much, but it is highly satisfying when you want to rip apart an antlion guard or combine shotgunner.
- Disappointingly, the Rebels seem about unchanged. I'd like it if they had the same improvements the Combine do, and followed Gordon looser like they do in the coast chapters.
I also would love if the developer added gibbing. There's a good amount of props already available in HL2 and the Episodes for it.
I also ended up turning off projectile bullets because of said limitations. Neat, but i prefer my bullets to be more instant in HL2
I started mod on Lost Coast so I get to check out AI using jump quite early on, as the ascent to temple offers a lot of areas they could jump over. It was pretty cool seeing them shorten their routes like that.
@@EugenijusKrenis i don't think i even tried Lost Coast with it. Why didn't I think of that! It probably looks gorgeous with the additional bloom and saturation
I love that they fixed the sound on the pulse rifle so it's consistant with the NPC versions of the gun. It's much better imo.

@@Autumn_red_fox The day has come
I think grenade launcher attacks can be signaled with some sort of "get back!" gesture, like waving his hand behind his side to warn teammates that he's about to launch a nade, and/or loading the launcher, and/or some sort of audio hint like a click sound from releasing a safety or loading the launcher, and/or yelling commands.
They could probably just rip the sound cue used by the HECU in Half-Life: Source and that would work.
FIRE! IN! THE! HOLE!
@@tortillatime401 GO! RECON!
Make them do a funny sound before the boom. Like the HCEU.
@@tortillatime401 That would actually work really well, due to the robotic nature of the line matching perfectly with the Overwatch Soldiers in general.
They could signal it like in Rise of the Triad, where in that game, the enforcers yell "Here, catch!" before lobbing a certain projectile at the player. Maybe they could make the Combine soldiers shout out "launching bouncer" or something akin to that, since I know that they have their own lingo / codenames for grenades.
I wish every FPS game gave you the option to choose between a "zoom" and iron sights
Iron sights don't even work anymore
Thank you for your review! Glad that you have enjoyed it and thank you for your suggestions and critiques, HL2MMod thrives on user feedback. I've actually been a sub of yours for quite a while and I'm quite happy to see you spend your time playing and reviewing it :D
I had to disable "Projectile Bullets" by default because they take some time to get used to, people often would mistakenly blame damage/spread on them, even though none of the damages or weapon spreads were different from hitscan, they also don't have any sort of auto aim function, making shotgun gunplay a bit frustrating. Emplacement Gun/AR3 will be definitely remade in next version, it is indeed too OP in its current state. Some of your suggestions are already in the works for the next version too, glad we're thinking alike c:
Thanks again, and I hope you had great time while re-playing Half-Life 2 games with HL2MMod!
If I may make a suggestion, give us something beefy to shoot at with the emplaced gun. That way you don't need to tweak the gun itself and give the player a proper challenge in the process.
The Emplacement Gun is not really that overpowered in later sections of the game, since at that point it is essentially an AR2 with a lot of ammo, and it isn't as common. I did some file tweaking myself, and my fix was to simply reduce the ammo capacity from 400 to 100, but increase the damage from 8 to 15 to match the gun in its mounted state. It made the gun powerful, but it also made me more conservative of my resources, where as in its original state, I had so much ammo, that I would often just find another Emplacement Gun before I even emptied the previous one. I feel like the gun should feel like those temporary "heavy weapons" you use in games like the Halo Series and Saints Row 3, where you only get to use them for a short window of time, before they need to be discarded.
Bro is there a way to install mmod on a pirated hl2? I dont have steam
Your mod is very good, but I have one problem with it. I haven't played the latest update, so forgive me if this has already been changed, but the gameplay feels slower than vanilla HL2. Part of this definitely comes from the stamina mechanic, which prevents you from sprinting until the bar is full again. I like to play HL2 with my finger pretty much holding sprint down almost the entire time, so if you could add a toggle to make sprinting like it is in vanilla, that'd be great

This mod shows how good the visual design in half life 2 was. Sure OG HL2 doesn't look as good, but the visuals are a lot more clear, there's not exessive bloom or other effects distracting you and the animations take up a lot less space, making it easier to see what is in front of you.
Also, half the visual updates are actually from the Half Life 2 Update mod which brought the visual quality up to EP2 levels / fixed valve's lazy initial port of the game to the orange box version of the engine.

Mmod is almost everything I've ever wanted in an HL2 mod. Two things that would make it perfect is mobility mod support and opening some of the locked doors and areas throughout the game.
How about beefing up the combine soldier AI to be more like the soldiers in FEAR?
@@InnuendoXP to be like Fear would require a lot more than just beefing up the AI, you'd also have to change most of the enemy placement and alter some of the level geometry to give them more cover. It'd be nice but a massive endeavor and I'd imagine the squad ai would need a boost too to keep up
@@triplehelix3207 I understand it would be a massive endeavour, but damn would it be good.
@@InnuendoXP they're already beefed up a bit.
I would love it if someone made a mod of the HL2 Update maps that just expands the existing maps to open up those doors and add alternate paths to the end goal.
My favorite change from this mod is how it makes the Combine AR look like a belt fed Machine Gun instead of having these tiny cups act as batteries / clips.
The model for the ar2 was originally a single shot combine flare rifle. Its animations were just lightly modified.
Interesting. This was my least favorite change. I would say going through one of those tiny cups for each shot seems weird, instead.. But as long as they don't change the sound, It's the best sounding weapon from HL2.
I kinda liked the concept of one little shell have 30 energy pellets that cycle out one at the time, but I guess that would mean we would lose that satisfying reload animation.
@@TheEmeraldSword04 i would like a combination of both, just like having like 5 of them, changing them every 6 shots, but i guess it could be hard from a technical standpoint
@@danieleproia I'm learning coding, and that doesn't sound too hard to do actually.
it would probably be a counter where shots 1-5 would play the standard punch animation, and the 6th shot will trigger an animation that punches then swaps out. To ensure it won't occur at random, pre-mature reloads (reloading the gun before it's empty) will reset the counter.
6:50 This is probably why I love the Hunters from Ep. 2 so much. They're more mobile and tanky than the Combine but use projectile and melee based attacks, making for longer more involved battles. They also incentivize an under appreciated part of HL2's gunplay: weapon switching in order to take advantage of passive reloading.
Man, these guys could do some great things with Left4Dead 2.
HadesWTF I dream of an mmod for l4d2
with left 4 dead 2 there are tons of first person animations for weapons, tons of weapon reskins, different hud icons and health bars, so you could practically make your own left 4 dead game with the amount of different addons
This is definitely my favorite HL2 mod of 2019, it just makes the game look so much better and the guns... Just delicious.

If you want full Iron Sights you have to put in the extra file thats included in the 1.3 version zip file. The only standard weapon that doesn't have them is the AR2 because of modeling issues with the original gun.
Yeah that confused me a bit - True ironsights were advertised in the trailer for MMod 1.3, but I couldn't find it in the options menu. Then I re-read the text files that came with the zip.
Perhaps there ought to be a note or text or something in the options menu if the option itself isn't possible for whatever reason.
1.3 is a massive improvement over 1.2 though. :) Good enough excuse to replay HL2 twice in a year, heh.

Big fan keep making this amazing videos.
If you have the ability to play HL:A in VR, DO IT. There is absolutely no way that a pancake mod will do the game justice with what we've seen
tbh I never had a problem with the standard gunplay in HL2, I always thought it was fun. It's obviously not as satisfying as something like FEAR (which is my gold standard for gunplay in video games), but I never thought it was bad either. Something about Gordon's responsive movement and being able to run out of cover and blast combine in the face with the shotgun is kinda cheesy, but very satisfying for me when I'm able to time things correctly and sustain minimal or no damage by paying attention to their positions and popping out with said shotgun or a well-placed grenade throw when they take a break from firing in my general direction.
That being said, SMOD Tactical on hard or whatever is also an extremely fun and challenging way to play through HL2 and I'd recommend that over MMOD if you wanted something more realistic.
Maybe it's just me, but I also notice the white noise when after firing weapons or any explosion occurs. It's nice.

8:00 Mr Plinkett.. I love RedLetterMedia and this channel !
8:19 I really like that. Shows that you're actually wearing the HEV suits helmet.
GAKtion64 I love this mod. Have you gotten it already?
You can also interpret that as his glasses.
13:07 I didn't expect Jojo reference here xD
Great video as always. Found your channel this year and it is one of my favorites now. 🤘
Best thing about this game is not only how good it played or looked back then but you could put cheats in to which made it more fun
d4rkjust1c3 nowadays you gotta pay money to skip parts of the game, or get guns early.
@@samuelolivier3792 yea and that's what's stupid about games now a days the pay to win crap the hell with that I want to enjoy my games

Neo2266 I’m my opinion Half-Life 2 is a great GAME, but it’s not a great SEQUEL or follow up. I can ramble on for hours now, but lots of people talk about how a great sequel is one that differs but still acknowledge and improve what made the original great, and if you want it I can ramble for hours on how Half Life 2 is one of the extremely rare cases of sequel where it just changes too much.
Severance blades of darkness?
yes !! Wish we would get some sort of spiritual succesor
@@a98793 exactly! I can't believe people don't know about this game!!!
Fantastic game!
@@nonamenoname1942 It was dark souls before dark souls
dark souls is like unloved and premature grandchild of Blades of darkness) Different leagues.
I just love when I can hear some YES in Reviews. ”I'll be the roundabout
The words will make you out 'n' out”
People who say Half-Life 2 is a bad sequel do not go to gamer heaven.
*I* *LOVE* *HL2* *MMOD!* One feature I'd love to see added is limb dismemberment from the most powerful weapons like the shotgun, grenade explosions, the rocket launcher, etc... and cutting *_all_* types of enemies in half (not just zombies) or severing their limbs/hands/arms/feet/legs/head by firing heavy/sharp objects like the buzz-saw blade at them with the gravity gun.
The Combine AI in MMod is fascinating don't you agree
This is probably one of the greatest half life 2 mods ever.
Cinematic mod: *laughs*
@@n0t_zat0ichi29 Yeah no that mod is a joke and takes away from what half life 2 is.

There's a reason why when adding a flat display mode to HLA in Source 2, we ported these weapons over.
I had initially thought I didn't care for this one as I preferred HL2: Update's more subtle effects, but I just learned there is a way to play both at the same time and it is *great.* The biggest standout by far is the *fire.* I've seen the lighting on it glitch a couple of times but it is *SO* much more impressive. Just played Ravenholm with both mods on and it was incredible.
8:51 69 Health!

7:07 Is that why I died so much when I played the half-life games? I genuinely thought that I was supposed to move around everywhere to dodge their fire and I was wondering why I was taking so much damage. And now I learn that I wasn't supposed to dodge it at all.
I NEVER complained nor even notice the ladder animation until you mentioned it
I love this review so much. I love your passionate swear words, passion for games, and all that other good stuff.
Almost done with Black Mesa & the game just blew me away, I thirst for more with HL2, but I wanna see an update or re-master mod before picking it up.
Looks like MMOD is the ticket.
I kinda have to agree with ballistics being really important for "gunfeel". Yes, there's games where hitscan is serviceable but I remember one game fondly from my teens which was Combat Arms. Mind that it was a Korean FPS so it had microtransactions up the wazoo and the netcode was horrible, not to mention the hackers. There were serious faults with the game engine but many weapons were extremely enjoyable. I never paid any money in my years of playing but there were ways of getting lootboxes through the in-game points and one time I got the MP7 for one month (the MP7 Steel). The SMG in this mod reminds me of that MP7. Really punchy and the weapon spread gives you a satisfactory cone where you get decent accuracy but also a slight "shotgun effect" that makes it feel like you're shredding people.
