    Half-Life: Source is a direct port of the original Half-Life game to Half-Life 2’s Source engine, introducing graphics and AI improvements as well as some subtle level changes. It is available on Steam as part of three packs: Half-Life Complete, Valve Complete Pack and Half-Life 1: Source, the latter also includes Half-Life Deathmatch: Source.

    I heard that HL:source was literally made just to test what the new source engine broke so they knew what they had to fix
    I guess they just figured there was no reason not to just polish it up a tiny bit and release it for those who want to play it

      @@ballerrr273 Yeah, even if it was just an experiment, if you're selling it you should probably polish it up.
      I want to say it was given to early purchasers of HL2 or those who got a special edition for free, but at least as of now, it's definitely a separate product that doesn't come free with any other game.

      Wood Man because it costs money to port a game to an engine, even if the work is minimal, workers still get paid. It’s why most F2P games have micro transactions, and why broken games still launch at 60 bucks. People spend time working on this stuff, and need a salary to feed their families. Yes, you can sa6 they should just pay money from other games to the people who worked on this, buuuuut that’s like your manager walks in and says “sooorryyy but the people who box the burgers need extra money today, and we didn’t have many sales so we’re gonna need to half your pay for the rest of the year” yes, it can happen, yes, it’s possible, but imagine the controversy. Imagine how it’d feel to be a game dev, spending years on Half Life 2, and then Gabe Newell walks in and says that your pay is being chopped in half because the boys at the HL Source team need money and we’re launching the game for free. I realize I’m repeating myself, but that’s my overly long explanation for this.

      @N0zer0 4 года назад +146

      That's true. I played HF:Source last year. An older, offline Linux version with HD textures. I come across zero graphical glitches, the tentacle killed the security guard in a few seconds, the scientist was sitting in his chair, not floating above it, there were no glitchy textures. Yes, it's different from the original game but not in a bad way imho.

      Yeah, I also got my hands into a really old version of this game, maybe from 2006 or something, and the game works just fine, the only things that bother me are how fast Gordon moves and the few changes to the MP5, but aside from that, there was nothing wrong.
      It's really safe to assume that the Steampipe fix from 2013 is what broke the game entirely, that, or the continous updates to the source engine are what broke it.

      Source is an everchanging engine.
      They change one thing and it changes it for EVERY game, that's why it's called "source" cause it's open source to anyone in valve.
      It's like working on a github repository that constantly can change, and why changes to the engine itself rarely if ever happen, cause changing one thing in the engine for TF2, can break HL2, CS:GO and CS:S, and other games like what we see with Half-Life: Source.

    So, people have found that HL:S was, for Valve, simply a way to test the Source Engine with already-made assets (all of which could be loaded easily into Hammer because, well, Goldsrc is basically Source). People have found that they were working on it around 2003 when they were finishing up Source itself, rather than HL2 which was in a bad development cycle. Valve has done this a lot, but usually their little tech-demos are either free or they never release at all. This one has a retail price-tag attached to it.
    I got suckered into buying it as a kid because I was dumb and looked at really small comparisons of the graphics and said "ooo that looks shiny :OOOO" and I didn't think about the lack of mod support or anything like that. I hate how it made me have buyer's remorse like hell which caused me to just...stick with it, rather than buying HL1. Later, my friend gifted me the original game.

    Even though the original game has an aged low poly look, it adds to the tone, mystery, and lore of the game in a good way. There was hardly any art style dissonance and everything looked how it should. It feels so weird seeing realistic water in front of a blocky mountain or HL2 blood splatters and ragdolls instead of the chunky Quake style gibbing of the original. Those guns in the video are so goddamn shiny I don't remember it being like that last time I played Source. Playing Goldsource in 4:3 view with texture filtering off and in software mode is better than this.
    I love HL Source for how weird and buggy it is and for giving us Freeman's Mind, but If i wanted a goofy buggy adventure in Half Life Maps i'd play Gmod or Crack Life instead.

    Also, some of the other issues are just normal Source behavior, which can be reproduced in Garry's Mod. Ragdolls from dead NPCs/players are not considered props and don't collide with props, even if a prop is a ragdoll. This also extends to map geometry that moves or is destructable. Shadows are not blocked by any prop or map geometry.
    Also also, that tank never could turn around to shoot at you if you were behind it. That's the entire point of using that manhole giggity.

    I think It was never really meant to be a remaster, more it was meant a “tech demonstration” Since the Source Engine was built on top from the GoldSrc. Showing that porting GoldSrc to Source was possible with the tools in Source SDK. I would also think that Valve thought the some modders of the community of GoldSrc wouldn’t really touch the Source Engine because of the mods they were working on. So they were giving them a reason to switch over. Since the Source Engine was at its infancy at the time, they needed a reason to have a thriving mod community as they stated thats what made Half-Life made most sells. At the time, Counter-Strike and other mods were more popular than HL itself. Pretty sure this was the reason why there was a Half-Life Deathmatch Source. Aaaaaand Counter-Strike Source...

    • @LonelySpaceDetective
      @LonelySpaceDetective 4 года назад +14

      IIRC, HLS was actually an experiment done to see how much work porting a mod to Source would be. Presumably, they released it just because they could. I remember reading this somewhere, probably on the Combine OverWiki.
      That said, even if it was an experiment or tech demo in intent, practically it's still an example of a remaster. If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, and is released to the public as a non-free product like a duck, then it probably should be polished like a duck.

    10:56 Thank you for putting that in there. I wrote that section actually. Although some other people also added stuffs there.
    Only thing I like mostly in HL:S is rapid firing shotgun. So I don't have to wait for pesky pump animation. But I do have to constantly reload the shotgun in this way though.
    And I also perfer guards with lowered aggression as in older HL they will fight to death and refuse to follow the player anymore. While in HLS they still follow. And with HD Skins on they fire pistol much faster (in non HD they only fire faster when against Gordon). And there seems have no limits (2 was the limit in orignal half life) how much people can follow you now and they actually follow you at faster rate and quite unlikely that scientist will stop behind.
    And about that tentacle scene. Well it happen only to me once. But other times guard did got hit and I didn't suffer that from devil's eye Glitch.
    Beside that. Well. At-least you can spawn NPC without need to pre-catch them. As you can spanw any npc as you want while in orignal HL doing that on npc that does not exist already on map will boot you back to menu. And not everyone probably want to start the game from scratch to I do like chapter selection. As doing that in Hl1 will end up with no hev suit and no weapons

    I think the parts I like about Half-Life: Source were the menu screens, the ability to choose whatever chapter you want, some weapons feeling a little stronger, the NPC A.I. pathfinding, the ability to get multiple NPCs to follow you without them getting stuck or left behind, and the blending of Half-Life 1's graphics with the Source engine's perks. What I don't like is that Valve didn't try (and still haven't tried) to iron out all the awkwardness and glitches in the game. There are times that I suspect that Half-Life: Source is based on the pre-patched retail version of Half-Life, because parts of the gameplay and some of the glitches remind me of that version. It's a shame that all the issues haven't been resolved yet, because I think that Half-Life: Source could be potentially fun for modding.
    If someone at Valve does finally bother to fix Half-Life: Source, hopefully they could convert Opposing Force as well. It is strange that the NPC A.I. pathfinding works better in Source than in the current Steam version of Half-Life, because the pathfinding used to work well in Half-Life and Opposing Force in their previous versions before Steam.
    I'm not fond of the HDP models either, Gmanlives. I can see them being improved, but I often just prefer the classic graphics. The original HDP model for the G-Man wasn't very impressive: he looked like a blank-faced blockhead rather than the creepy, smarmy, inhuman freak I know and love.
    It is interesting the more you review different variations on Half-Life, whether it is Black Mesa, Half-Life: Source, or Half-Life PS2, you've shown more and more appreciation for the original Half-Life. You have turned into a true expert and connoisseur of Half-Life 1, Sir Gmanlives.

    9:10 This was an issue with the overbright setting iirc. In the Steam version of Half Life (non source) it doesn't work without tweaking, it kills the contrast and lighting without it. I guess the Source version is using the full range of brightness in the colours, that isn't possible without modification in the standard Half Life engine on Steam.

    The crowbar thing can be explained... sort of, the property that controls the sound of an object is set in the .qc file which is packed inside .mdl files. For some reason the developers have opted to change the material noise of the crates to ‘metal’ instead of ‘wood’.
    It’s hard to see why they’d pick it and I don’t imagine it was an oversight as it has to be done deliberately, so unless the Devs copied the .qc properties from a metal object and forgot to change the sound then it’s anyone’s guess

    I think Half-Life: Source had a lot of potential, keeping every texture the same to keep the same visual style but with improved lighting and physics is genius and it makes for a very unique and beautiful visual style.
