Half-Life was Valve's first product, released on November 19, 1998. Players control Gordon Freeman, a theoretical physicist, after the Black Mesa Research Facility accidentally causes a dimensional rift which triggers an alien invasion. The game was published by Sierra Studios and released for Windows, and was ported by Gearbox Software to PlayStation 2 in 2001.
Valve later converted the game to use their Source engine.[2] Half-Life received critical acclaim, critics hailing its overall presentation and numerous scripted sequences. The game won over 50 Game of the Year awards and its gameplay has influenced first-person shooters for years to come. Half-Life has since been regarded as one of the greatest games of all time.
"Maybe they just hate money"
He says this while Valve makes millions just by selling hats and textures
Right you are.
Do they even need to make games to make tons of money?
Steam by itself is a cash cow for them.
16:15 The physical copy of The Orange Box for 360 is playable on Xbox One thanks to backward compatibility. But I ain't holdin' my breath for an HD remaster.
@Denam Actually I don't expect anything extraordinary from Alyx. I don't think VR as it is now is ready for a first person shooter.

@Shallex And you ruined the joke. Nice job mate.
Man, if the Dreamcast version actually released, it would have easily been the best version considering the Dreamcast has VGA support, as well as mouse and keyboard which was prominent for Quake 3 arena since it was cross platform with PC. Hell if the Dreamcast lasted even a few years longer on the market, I'm sure we would have also gotten Half Life Deathmatch.
There's a leaked version of DC HL floating out there. If you ever play it, you'll notice that the game loads, ALOT. I don't want to say its unplayable but the 12x GD-Rom really lacked in in speed compared to the PS2 DVD-Rom and showed it's deficiencies. If you play on an optical drive emulator, it fares better but those load times would have brought the ratings down.
Check out the load times on RUclips of someone playing it on DC so you can see for yourself.
@@Charlie-eq3dj Yep, got it when originally leaked and as my first taste of HL I played it a lot. But, compared to PC or PS2 it's pointless to play today, I just can't stomach the loading.
Thing to remember though is tbe leak, whilst a complete game has bever been said to be "Gold" - it's speculated a later release addressed these loading times along with the VMU error of save states being sometimes to big to save.
I believe an even earlier leak was found just a couple of years ago with more oddities but I have not seeen or played it.
The PS2 version has USB Mouse & Keyboard compatibility too
I found the dreamcast version and tried it with an emulator. The problem I had is I play with a gamepad, and the Dreamcast only has 1 stick. I would prefer it too but since I play with modern gamepad, ps2 port is still my best option for original game
@@Charlie-eq3dj I have a feeling that for the PS2 port of Half Life 1, they put it on CD-ROM, which is still double the speed of the Dreamcast (12x DC vs 24x PS2), plus instead of loading it into 16MB of RAM, it had 32MB. Its definitely a more polished port, and with good reason, but we should also acknowledge that the DC one wasn't quite finished or released officially.
The PS2 version was my introduction to Half Life.

Actually, you can find one of Decay's protagonists' corpse in Opposing Force. If you use your teleporting gun at a specific point in the campaign, the area of Xen that you'll be transported to will have her body lying dead in an underwater area. I think it was the one with the white HEV suit; can't remember her name.
It was Gina Cross. Though the thing is, it's never been confirmed if it was actually her or not as it was making use of the gina.mdl file for the multiplayer aspect of the game. So whether or not it's Actually Gina cross, or just a random female NPC that happens to use the gina model, remains to be seen.

When I was a young lad I never had a PC and was stuck with these console ports of classics like WOLFENSTEIN and HALF LIFE. Thanks for reviewing them and not just shitting on them!
I feel this because even the lesser spectacular games you play as a kid have a great effect.
I still remember little known games called Demolition Racer, Jacked(an over the top violent bike racing game) and others I played as a child.
I don't think there's a single soul other than me that's played Jacked.
That's a decent looking port on the PS2 though, I think you made out alright there.
I was in a similar situation with the Xbox, playing PC ports on there for a few years until I was able to get a more modern PC.
I remember playing return to castle wolfenstien on my first ps2. Whenever I got to the crypt missions with zombies and skelatons I would give my dad the controller and close my eyes cuz I was so scared...I also remember my dad upgrading his PC to run the new doom (Doom 3) I fucking shit my pants at least 10 times watching him playing that when I was super young I swear to god. That made ps2 wolfie look like fisher price play time in comparison.
You've gotta change the FOV on the PC version to 112 or something in that ballpark to get 90, because something got messed up when they made the game widescreen.
I think it's 106 because that is basically the "Widescreen version of 90 FOV".
"Now all we need is a ps2 version of hunt down the freeman and the cycle will be complete". That game lags on a GTX 1080 i7 running off an SSD. The thought of a ps2 edition makes me wanna vomit.
Some say that the PS2 version of Hunt Down the Freeman freezes right at the opening cutscene.
MondySpartan i don't think it can make through the starting menu
That's even better. Don't spoil PS2 Legacy with some "sh*t-of-a-game" homebrew port.

The xbox hl2 version was my introduction to the series. It was defenitively the best looking game in the system and I absolutely loved it. It goes to show how unaware we were about framerates at the time.

On my first playthrough of Half Life I played on hardmode and did indeed make it to that section with too little health to survive the fall. It took a long time and a lot of deaths to fall damage, but if you're quick you can jump backwards as the pipe breaks onto the unbroken section. To the left of the player in that empty space above the drop ceiling are iron girders with X braces underneath which you can strafe-jump onto and can be used to walk down to the drop ceiling.
Really tricky, but with enough quicksaves anything is possible.
Can't wait for Deus Ex - The Conspiracy PS2 review, it was unique enough for n-th playthrough,
I have finished Deus ex on PS2, it´s Ok and playable port.
Great port! My introduction to Deus Ex, and i played the original on pc a few years later. Then i realized Ion Storm redesigned large parts of the game due to PS2's lack of memory.. The loading screens occured while travelling through corridors, which were absent in the pc-version. They literally divided every level into smaller sections using walls and corridors, while keeping all of the original content intact. Quite an achievement.
@@ShapeshifteR-TheAnomalyGameCat One of my favorite games of all time. I liked it enough to purchase it for both PC and PS2. A remake of that game would almost get me as excited as a release of HL3....
I'm surprised you didn't mention the new model for the H.E.V. charger, that thing looks sick
Alright, now play Half-Life 2, Episode 1, and Episode 2 on the 360
I just got my copy back, and I'm worrying about trying to over come the area when your in the sewers, and drop to a reseivour and I have to shoot guys on the street level through the grate above me but the water and aimming with the controller is making that area frustrating. I've loved every other part though.
No real point, they run at an almost locked 60, and are pretty simple PC ports. Not much to say about the Orange Box outside of the fact that a very very outdated version of TF2 still works on it.

You cant really blame gordon for the resonance cascade, the (most unstable) sample was given to black mesa by g-man himself, he knew and wanted all of this to happen. Also, the species from Xen didnt enslave humanity, Combine enslaved Xen, and then enslaved humanity afterwards.

The use of tourettes guy snippets is awesome. Glad to know that there are still people out there who hadn't forgot about him
Damn. After Doom 3, I was looking forward to a dedicated Half-Life 2 video. I'm curious, did you emulate the game on an Xbox 360? The frame rate is drastically slower than on an original Xbox, making it nearly unplayable at times. Sure, on original hardware it could chug at times, but for the most part, it was serviceable. I really wanted to see your take on the whole thing, but I suppose this will have to do.
The game was actually quite impressive for its time given how much they had to squeeze out of the console whilst also surprisingly providing some enhancements. The game was always planned to be on the Xbox, but with how much Valve was falling behind schedule during the PC version's development in not knowing what to do with the art style, story, or pretty much anything, they focused solely on the PC version without considering any of the console's limitations, which is a decision I'm sure we're all thankful for. Once it came time to work on the Xbox port, not only did they have a monumental task ahead of them, but they actually discovered some aspects of the hardware they could take advantage of that they couldn't with PC hardware at the time, leading to both superior audio handling and especially lighting. Bloom is exclusive to the Xbox version and actually enhances the look quite nicely without overdoing it, aiding the atmosphere in areas like the coastline and Nova Prospekt. Dr Breen's speeches through the otherworldly screens have some nice effects added that make his voice echo through the streets and buildings, and it can be kind of haunting.
The menus were also really nice (and properly paused the game, unlike on the PC), especially the main one, with the way it propped up the main logo and the music and sound effects it utilized both then and after pressing start. I've always been bugged by the utilitarian menus for the Half-Life titles on PC that acted more like a work interface rather than a game one.
The airboat could be a little odd to control, but the buggy handled quite fine considering the harsher turning. The camera controls were another matter. I quickly got used to them back in the day (having both sensitivities one major tick below max) but it seems Valve hasn't learned anything since as I recently tried a controller on the PC version and the camera still felt terrible.
Also, unlike Doom 3, they hardly had to change any map layouts. Besides more loading points due to splitting the maps into smaller chunks, there isn't a whole lot that was actually cut as most of the changes are cosmetic; in fact, most of the major changes were actually displayed in this video, with the only significant one missing being when the Combine cut the lights in Entanglement as that area is permanently lit. The end of Route Kanal does change the shanty town into more of a bricked off area, and Water Hazard can have more of a creepy vibe by there hardly being anything above the canals, but it's usually the 3D skyboxes (parts or the whole thing) that are the first to go (sadly) and then some excess buildings, then props that don't affect gameplay. I remember loving the atmosphere of Water Hazard until I saw some PC footage of the place just after the ramp puzzle and saw all those apartment buildings, lamp posts, and power lines next to the road (telling me that it wasn't some country highway) as well as City 17 and the Citadel far off in the distance when looking back. The ghostly Overwatch voice no longer felt eerily out of place as if it was tracking Gordon down a lonely canal, it was just a leftover due to the residential area being completely removed (as well as the Gman sighting as a result). It was because of this notice that I actually got the PC version despite not having a dedicated GPU and now only play the Xbox port out of nostalgia.
I remember reading all the magazines and watching all the videos on the port's development during my hype for the game as Valve was learning a lot about optimizing their engine in creating this port, and they actually took a lot of those ideas and optimizations and put them into the Source engine as a whole, which was the start in having future titles and updates run better than they would have with all that the new games on the engine would have to offer.
yeah i had HL2 on xbox back in the day and dont remember being that choppy
Yup, Half-Life 2 on an original Xbox was a pretty consistent 30 fps, playing the original Xbox version on a Xbox 360 doesn't run or look as good, since it's emulating the original hardware.
southpaw117 I think he is playing on 360, since he mentioned it in one of his other port videos. Questionable backwards compatibility on 360 is definitely not the best way to represent these Xbox ports.
@Jesse's Cool Reviews The suggestion that gman is being "deliberately ignorant," is a bit silly.
It's fine to tell him that he made a mistake in playing the emulated version, but to say that he did it on purpose just seems spiteful and makes no sense.
In regards to it being a technical masterpiece, gman adressed this. He stated that being technically impressive is not the same as being a good game.
@@SPNKRGrenth it wasn't always a consistent 30fps. It was definitely choppy in many parts of the game. Nevertheless I felt it was a decent port for Xbox considering tech limitations.

Wow, this new Digital Foundry secondary channel is really great
Damn, that's some trip down memory lane. I still have the PS2 port of Half-Life on the shelf, it was the only thing that I really ever played back then when I was in Elementry School/Middle School. While I did have a PC back then, it's hardware was so dated I couldn't even get 30 fps even in Office Complex. So having the ability to play Half-Life on the console was honestly a blessing and the Decay Co-Op I've beaten solo more times than I'd like to admit.
As for Half-Life 2 on the xbox.. I didn't even know the game released. Around Christmas of 2004 I got a Xbox, while it wasn't a PC I was still excited at a 13 year old kid. Imagine my surprise when browsing though Blockbuster I see cases upon cases of Half-Life 2 lining the shelves.

Yeah, it's hard to pin the glock and the mp5 as the 'bread and butter' of half life. You could replace them with any smg or assault rifle, and the game wouldn't really suffer for it.
Giving you a beretta M9 was a definite improvement. Even if it isn't functionally different in gameplay terms, I've always considered Glocks to be the gun equivalent of taco bell shits. Messy, unpleasant, and far too ubiquitous for the actual quality of the product.
I like them but I only use them with the expansion packs. I like playing games in the state that they were originally meant to be played if possible.
imo, the best part about it is the HECU. In the HD pack, they actually look like military personnel, instead of weird, bulky and low-poly crap. I don't like the new sounds, but that's an easy fix by copy and pasting the sound files from a non-HD game folder to the HD game folder and replacing the existing files there.
aim acceleration is there for stick aiming. Because when you need to do a fast sudden turn, there's only so far that you can push the stick, so the extra speed helps
An instant turn button is better for that and won't ruin normal aiming
@@Shoxic666 turn to what degree though? This can't be practical, having a set amount turn. The solution is simple, just turn off accel like any normal person for regular aim. Anyway I was just trying to find a reasonable explanation for something that annoyed me

I had always heard about how great Half-Life was when I was in high school, but didn't own a PC so the PS2 version was my introduction to the series. Nearly 2 decades later, I own and have played the crap out of the PC versions of Half-Life 1 and 2. Great stuff.
The Dreamcast version was pretty much completed and insanely impressive for the hardware. It's playable from start to finish, why it was dropped we leave for speculation but would have helped Sega a lot! But as said download and play it :) It's good :)
I’m actually considering buying this port. You made it sound pretty good and I have a friend who also shares the same interest I do with the Half-Life series. Only problem is, I have about 30 games to finish before I buy something else, not to mention that Doom Eternal is coming out on Friday
It would probably be easier to get the PC version, if you have a PC.
@@jamesedleymusic I would like to play Half-Life Decay. Do you know if that’s on PC? Also, I should have made it clearer in my original comment that I already own all the Half-Life games on PC (excluding Alyx).
@@JMAR_GAMES There’s a mod for Decay on PC but no official release.
@@jamesedleymusic Okay, thank you. I figured something like that existed.
The Minimme-styled thumbnails for the past few "Impressive Ports" are just incredible 🤣😂
By the way minimme is amazing
I remember playing Half-Life in 1999 and 2000 in Vocational School because we had LAN parties there instead of doing our boring programming assignments. However, the interesting thing is when I seen the pilot episode of MacGyver and immediately felt Deja Vu in how familiar the facility was in the MacGyver episode. That's when I figured out that the Half-Life developers might have been MacGyver fans and decided to model the Black Mesa facility upon the facility in that pilot episode of MacGyver in 1985.
Thank you for acknowledging aiming acceleration! I feel like that shit's the main reason a lot of PC elitists won't even touch a game pad. I know a mouse and keyboard is the best way to play FPS games but I swear when the controls are right a good controller is more than fine! It's just one thing that's always irked me.
Something else to note about the ps2 port is the Uplink expansion/mod that can be played using the OPM demo disc.
I thought this was a Minimme video but then herd GGGman's voice and got seriously confused
Yep...
8:42 Benry demonstrates the Black Mesa Sweet Scent.
I actually prefer the hd pack. I don't understand why people give it a hard time, like it's cool to do so
The setting and story of this game are based on real facilities called Deep Underground Military Bases. Look up the one in Dulce, New Mexico. They deal with alien technology and cloning apparently.
I enjoyed this version of the game. I remember being pretty surprised when I found out that this port existed in the first place. It was actually the first time I beat Half-Life I think. Back in the day I got stuck on PC during the alien level with pretty much no ammo and health. I got annoyed and I stopped playing. It was only later that I found out I had been pretty much right at the end.
There's something therapeutic about the way GML says "shit" and other curse words
I really don’t mind the M4 being in Half Life.
These are US MARINES, it’s more realistic that they carry an M16 platform rifle, MP5 is a more SWAT or police weapon.
Plus, the weapon sounds beefy and badass when firing too, compared to the MP5’s rapid “chh chh chh” sounds.
Just personal preference tho really.
I have the same opinion as you dude.
Yeah but it still has pistol ammo and damage
Even if it makes more sense, I still prefer the punchyness of the MP5K.
'Dr. Cross and Dr. Green, you are required in the Anomalous Materials operations center' - probably the second most memorable phrase I know of the whole franchise
One thing I loved doing in Decay was to have ol' Keller tell me to follow him and does so, so slowly that I would just lose my shit and shoot my RPG launcher at his slow ass
in case you don't know the HD model pack was made for this port. even though it was first included with Blue Shift, it wasn't made for that expansion.
This was the first time I played Half Life, I was like 12 or 13 and remember fondly this came out and Pitch Black was just on sky movies for the first time pretty much the same day so did both with my mom. Good times.
One thing that stood out over time is the improved models on the ps2 game, I played pc version many years later and thought the graphics were atrocious compared to what I remember. Turns out it wasn't my mind playing tricks on me after all
I loved the PS2 port of Half-Life, I remember getting it when I was 10 after playing the PC version.
My intro to the series, I spent countless weekends playing through the whole thing. This and Cold Winter.
You should give the Decay mod another go. I managed to get it working kinda easily. I experienced NO bugs other than one crash. The Decay mod also allows it to be played online with a buddy too. I think it is a more attractive option to play the 3rd campaign of black mesa right on your pc just like the base game :)
I used to have this port. Good times.
One thing that you didn't mention about the decay scenario was that if you were by yourself you could still play through it but you'd have to switch between characters for some of the puzzles. Like one (don't remember the level it was in) where you had to get through a hall that was nothing but security turrets the whole way on the roof. If you tried to dash through without disabling them you wouldn't make it. The room with the switch to shut them down for a short time would also lock you in until the timer ran out so what you had to do was have one character at the switch, the other at the door. After throwing the switch, switch to the character at the door and make a dash for it, (not a straight line at that, I seem to remember you went right when you entered the hall took a left after traveling a ways and had to make one last right to reach to exit.) If you make it through to the other side you'd find a switch to shut the turrets off for good so the other character could make it through as well. If I remember right I was getting to the door right as the turrets were reactivating. If you're playing with two players then whoever is at the door will have to be on the ball.
I really love the PS2 port of Half-Life, thanks to this port I found this game and got in love with the franchise!! I still have my PS2 today and I love to play this game on it.
The tone in his voice when he says fuck is so rad
10:37 fat man mentions Dr.Kliner-
This was in Development since 2000, and released 2001 about the same time Half-Life 2 was in development-
So that means Valve did pay attention since Kliner wasn't a named character in Half-Life 1 as far as I know. So damn. Nice subtlety Valve.
Kleiner is specifically mentioned in the Half Life manual in a letter to Freeman. vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/half-life/images/3/39/Gordon_letter_2.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20100501085744&path-prefix=en
@@XenoSpyro Damn I miss manuals and how they'd have cool shit like that
Isn't the fatman dr. Breen?
8:04 - In fact, the grenade launcher for the mp5 exists, you can put an m205 or an ISTEC ISL-200, although it completely changes the front part.
This port still has the crunchiest sound effects. I love it for that reason alone. I love how the lock on mechanic lends itself to circle strafing with a controller without making things too easy because it prevents headshots.
I'm kinda happy that the ps2 port has been acknowledged and it surely brings back some nostalgia of watching my dad play it on the pc then he found it at a dvd store and rented the game on the ps2 and we had a blast trying it out. I still even have the save files for it on one of my memory cards. Good times
Jarek, ESCalation, Gmanlives... Everyone is talking about Half Life's PS2 port now.
I noticed that too, what's odd is that both videos were recommended to me right next to each other.
"Old mate Randy Pitchford" got a good laugh
I'm playing Black mesa for the first time and I'm starting to love it
The HD model pack was packaged with Blue Shift originally. Blue Shift and the HD models were originally made for the Sega Dreamcast port of the game. Gearbox did the Dreamcast port as well, and Blue Shift was meant to be exclusive content for it. Just like how the PS2 port got Decay. The Dreamcast was discontinued by Sega before the port could get a release. But it was 99% complete and there are leaked ISO's of it availible.
the HD models are god tier, who cares about the original shitty models
I wish the Dreamcast port was released, then I'd be able to play the damn thing on my phone with an emulator.
you can still download online for DC though
finally you made this video, i will now proceed to watch it
idiot
I was one of those people that first placed Half-Life 2 on the Xbox XD. Around 5 years ago my brother brought home a Xbox 360 with some games, and this was the only original Xbox game. I took interest in the game as the people on the box looked similar to the ones from those Gmod Machinimas (This was before I knew Gmod was first made as a Half-Life 2 mod) and I played it and fell in love with it. Then on the computer I got steam and well, just the rest is history!
Can you review the Dreamcast port as well? It is available if you *look around*.
That version can use the keyboard and mouse right?
I used to see people selling real high quality custom physical copies of that.
@@Gruntvc ps2 port also can use keyboard and mouse, but unlike the Dreamcast version you can use any usb keyboard and mouse
My best guess of why they removed the checkpoints is that writing stuff to Memory Card takes a little bit of time and it would be easy to notice the game freezing for a moment.
Half life 2 was also on this Chinese console called "Fuze", overrall basically a slightly better version of the Xbox port graphically and in FRAMERATE, but suffers atrocious latency, overrall making it worse to than the Xbox port.
Soulja BOI stole it and sells it in "his" line of bootleg consoles.
Finna get a gucci HEV suit and beat up breen on my Soulja Game lmao
I never played this when I was younger.
I just bought a copy for my ps2. Looking forward to playing it.
