Here's the song in Imogen's words:
I will never live to experience the finished feeling of this song, as it will only be finished when I die! Every 7 years, another minute is added to the song. From a fill in the blanks lullaby of the first minute to the torment of feeling you're in the wrong job, relationship and town coming into my mid 30s! 35 when I wrote this, 5 minutes long. perhaps the next 7 years will be expressing some memories of my own children? I do hope so! Inspired by the many hundreds who sat in The Listening Chair and shared with me their dreams of a 'song still to be written'. I wanted to figure out whether there was a common missing song thread people were aching for but instead something more interesting perhaps arose. Roughly each 7 year age group were concerned or wanted to hear a song about similar topics. I resonated most with those my own age at the sudden realisation perhaps I've gotten it all wrong! I settled upon writing the song to connect with all these people through us sharing life experiences over time. I look forward to every 7 years dusting off and bringing out The Listening Chair again, connecting this period in my life and those who shared this journey with me to people in my life when I'm 42, hopefully with kids in tow!

So you're saying that in a few years when she has become older, because of that fact, the song will have changed somehow becoming more complex‽ That's more than smart, it's temporally transcendent and deific.

Her musical and creative vision is pretty much unmatched by anyone else around. This video is brilliant in that it so effectively communicates the often chaotic way in which our mind works. She verbalizes and visually portrays some of the mundane (but actually a little wacky) stuff we all day in our daily lives as we try to get through this thing called life and come to an understanding of who we are in it.

    Cat, blue, piano
Are just some of the things I like
So the more that I see of them in my day
The better I sleep at night
    Mum, dad, Giles, and Juliet,
Are just some of the people I love
So the more of all them I can get in my day
The better I’ll sleep at night
I can moonwalk, build castles, play ping pong, talk to animals, hold my breath for a really long time … and tell the future
Are just six of the things I can do
And the more I can fit of these things in my day
The better I sleep at night
Ohhhhhh, the better I sleep at night
    Composer or maybe an astronaut
This is what I’m gonna be when I grow up
I know cause I sing out all through the day
I fly through space by night
The teasing, the fighting, the hospitals
    I don’t wanna go anymore
I put a brave face on, battle through the day
But I might cry myself to sleep
    Pinch, pinch, punch, punch
Dancing round the car park after lunch
Copy cats, gold stars, cola cubes for good marks
    Shy type, show off
Your mom’s got her masters, so what?
Swap stickers, best friends, knight rider
    whatcha tell the time again
Popular, blonde hair, all the pretty girls sit over there
Sisters in school, he’s cool, our brother knows karate
What do I do to make you hate me so much?
Is it the clothes I wear? The way I speak?
Wonder bra thrown ‘round the German classroom
    You wouldn’t understand
    I’ll never live it down
    Hiding in the bushes
    Or tip-toeing down the corridor
Stop it, you’ll make me laugh
Why would I ever need to know this?
    Somehow I’ll get through
I never want this to end
This night, this music, with you in my arms
Switch in to the real world
    No idea what I’m doing
But here it goes (there she goes)
I’ve found the place, feels like home
But I caught you kissing her
So suddenly I’m on my own
There’s just not enough hours in the day
Things are going great, I can’t complain
When I stumble to bed, I sleep like a baby
    Finding my feet
Make love, make money, make a difference
    Finding my feet
    Connect (connect)
    Finding my feed
Make love, make money, make a difference
    How’d you do that again?
    Connect together
Ahhhhhh, I find myself gazing out of the window for no reason
Ahhhhh, when did I stop eating bread… and cheese? I love cheese
Ahhhh, I want to have children
Ahhhhh, but I don’t want to have children, you know?
Something niggling, a feeling I can’t quite explain
(Questions) online, offline, like I’m not really here
Awake or sleeping, somehow can’t tell the difference
Twilight outside, dark deep down within
It’s a cover up, it was a cover up operation, oh no
honing in, I’m honing in on the heart of it all
Toughen up, I’ve got to toughen up
Coz I’m breaking it all apart
    What’s at the heart
What’s at the heart of it all?
    Who am I now?
    Who am I now?

Cat, blue, piano. After hearing the behind the scenes I cant stop listening to this, it is so uplifting. It's a chance to listen to the mind of a child at the start of the song, expressing her innocent world of endless possibilities. Going into her teens some of that spark is lost as disappointment and doubt sets in through various life struggles. Seeing how life unfolds like this reminds me we should not let "reality" and "experience" take away that spark. Towards the end it gets sinister reflective of a quarter life crisis - I can totally relate to this. I think we all can. It is a beautiful, honest song. The world NEEDS more music like this. I have to admit though - I tend to pause before the sinister part - the beginning makes me smile and has become my pick-me-up music. Simple pleasures.

Astonishingly, beautifully entrancing, magical, funny, sometimes unsettlingly neurotic, and impossible to stop watching. Imogen is an incandescent force of nature, a true genius in whom I hear echoed far horizon shades of artistes as diverse as Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, Akiko Yano, Suzanne Vega, Loreena McKennitt, Virginia Astley, Alison Goldfrapp, Little Boots, Janelle Monáe, Sa Dingding and Laurie Anderson in many of her creations, with fka twigs looming up as a sinistral spectre in her background shadows. Yet she is utterly unique, and I firmly believe that Imogen will one day be regarded as a true British national treasure.
Musically and compositionally, this album stands up very well to favourable comparison with Brian Wilson's SMiLE (while stylistically and culturally parsecs apart), and may well be seen in future times as this decade's equally revered masterpiece. And for the vast majority of artistes, a piece of this intricacy, this beauty, this naked honesty, would be more than enough for a whole career.
I can think of only one video that matches this for sheer creativity, for such attention to detail, for offbeat humour, and for a comparable torrent of ideas, and that is Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer (...and perhaps Tom Tom Club's Wordy Rappinghood comes as close as any, too - but that video only exists in my head). It's just a shame that they missed each other by about 3 decades. Can you imogene (...sorry, couldn't resist) what a collaboration between those 2 might have sparked off? That's the iniquity of time for you!
Btw... at 3:24... is that really a cannabis plant I spy on the left side of her small hadron collider des res? Just don't tell 'em, Heap! It's just between the two of us, OK?

I also got Leila Arab vibes, but maybe she is inspired by Imogen. and if they are completely unrelated, that's ok. I feel mature enough to appreciate this lady's work. so different and beautiful!

I know it has been 5 years since the last update to this video and I hope to see a new update to it sometime. I feel it is a pretty good video of the transition person has gone through since the late 80s. this video is a great representation of the common feedback Imogen has received over the years as she has had this "Listening Chair". She honestly does listen to people as she does an excellent job of incorporating their feelings and viewpoints throughout our modern history. Most telling is the last phrase, "Who am now?". This is her callout to people around now as she develops the next chapter of the song. I have love watching it develop over the years and I feel it is an excellent representation of how people think/feel in this generation.

What an incredibly creative tune. I don't remember how I discovered this artist as I was buying music, but I was awestruck. As she sings "I'll never live it down!!" I am sure she was inspired by Laurie Anderson and Brian Eno because she is an inspired combination of them both, along with so many other artists--and her own voice as well. This is not just derivative stuff! I have all her albums and will continue to enjoy as long as she intends to create!
