Never have I heard someone sing with such emotional fluency and conviction, it's as if she writes what she feels on these songs as soon as she feels it so that the emotions choose the words and take centerstage. And the thing is she hasn't compromised her musicality or tried to shift gears to appease certain audiences, instead choosing to just expound upon the knowledge of her profession and make relatable, beautifully themed music from her heart, and as a listener it shows and I appreciate that. Some people hate it and hate parenthood .. I have loved every second of it all. I am so grateful that not even words could translate the sheer humble gratitude I have for the opportunity to have been a mother a homemaker. I had hoped for lots more children and an earthly husband to love and cherish to share in happiness and to honor but even if that doesnt happen , no words could describe the joy and happiness I feel as a loving mother and homemaker. I haven't stopped listening to this since a few days ago. I don't think I'll ever, EVER get sick of listening to Imogen. I put her Pandora on when my students are doing peer review, I listen to her when I'm falling asleep, I listen to her in the car, sing to her in the shower - she's got music for everything and whenever she comes out with something new I get in an "imoggy mood" where all I want to do is listen to her entire discography (from "headlock" and "little bird" to, NOW, this new song). Perfect. She's PERFECT.

I love this song because it reminds me of Speak For Yourself/Ellipse - her best period as a solo artist. Imogen should stick with it - it's some kind of magic only she can create. I'm not a fan of her last album Sparks - she pulled a Bjork and went way too experimental, and lost that spark in the process. Keep it simple and beautiful, Imogen, your voice and production is distinctive enough to create something totally unique, even if it's a simple pop song on paper. I miss that kind of Immi magic...
Speak for Yourself is an amazing album but I love Sparks. I think each song is beautiful in its own right, but when listening to it as an album it's a journey. Each song is a brilliant puzzle piece to the perfect album in my opinion and it's all still very uniquely her style.

And I love seeing this come from Immi, since I know before, she didn't want kids, but now that she has one, she's seen the light! So cute!!
This is much better than that frivolous "Happy Song". I've been dreading this day tbh.. the day she becomes a mother & looses her edge & becomes all happy, & dull, & boring. The Tortured artist isn't a myth! But I am shocked that this track has Bass & Penetrative Drums in.. 2 things that she usually shies away from. Now she's just got to make sure they are powerful throughout; opposed to just peaking their heads above the mix intermittently. The production is (as usual) in Heap's inimitable style, doesn't get to over complicated so the meaning doesn't get lost, it has a mix of artificial & real sounds, but most importantly. it has structure. So many midi-kids today can sure make a killer beat, but they lack the creativity & skill to give the music a narrative, a structure. I'd be interested to see where she goes next. I hope it isn't just a "Yay! I'm a Happy middle aged mother" album/EP.
I actually like the Happy Song - it's kinda like the opposite of this one. From what I gathered this one is about postpartum depression and struggling with managing being a mother, while Happy Song is simple, and sounds like there hasn't been much thought to it, and follows her journey as a mother. It's like the Listening Chair, it keeps evolving. Though, I need to say I would have hated the Happy Song not hearing this one first. :)
The Happy Song wasn't written for you. It was written specifically for children. You haven't heard many of Imogen's songs if you say that she "shies away from bass". I mean - Me The Machine, Run-Time, Minds Without Fear, Entanglement, Swoon? Most of Speak For Yourself (album) was pretty bass-rich as well. In any case, I'm sure she knows exactly how she wants to arrange and mix her songs, so patronizing her by saying what "she's got to make sure" was uncalled for.

I love this song because it reminds me of Speak For Yourself/Ellipse - her best period as a solo artist. Imogen should stick with it - it's some kind of magic only she can create. I'm not a fan of her last album Sparks - she pulled a Bjork and went way too experimental, and lost that spark in the process. Keep it simple and beautiful, Imogen, your voice and production is distinctive enough to create something totally unique, even if it's a simple pop song on paper. I miss that kind of Immi magic...
Speak for Yourself is an amazing album but I love Sparks. I think each song is beautiful in its own right, but when listening to it as an album it's a journey. Each song is a brilliant puzzle piece to the perfect album in my opinion and it's all still very uniquely her style.

AHH IMOGEN! I absolutely love your music, this is incredible, especially on stupidly loud with the backing music, your songs never fail to make me happy :)
This is about her baby! And it seriously made me cry, because I feel the same way. My daughter is the hardest thing I've ever done, and the best, thing I've ever done. It's SO WORTH IT! And I love seeing this come from Immi, since I know before, she didn't want kids, but now that she has one, she's seen the light! So cute!!
This is much better than that frivolous "Happy Song". I've been dreading this day tbh.. the day she becomes a mother & looses her edge & becomes all happy, & dull, & boring. The Tortured artist isn't a myth! But I am shocked that this track has Bass & Penetrative Drums in.. 2 things that she usually shies away from. Now she's just got to make sure they are powerful throughout; opposed to just peaking their heads above the mix intermittently.
The production is (as usual) in Heap's inimitable style, doesn't get to over complicated so the meaning doesn't get lost, it has a mix of artificial & real sounds, but most importantly. it has structure. So many midi-kids today can sure make a killer beat, but they lack the creativity & skill to give the music a narrative, a structure. I'd be interested to see where she goes next. I hope it isn't just a "Yay! I'm a Happy middle aged mother" album/EP.
I actually like the Happy Song - it's kinda like the opposite of this one.
From what I gathered this one is about postpartum depression and struggling with managing being a mother, while Happy Song is simple, and sounds like there hasn't been much thought to it, and follows her journey as a mother. It's like the Listening Chair, it keeps evolving.
Though, I need to say I would have hated the Happy Song not hearing this one first. :)
The Happy Song wasn't written for you. It was written specifically for children.
You haven't heard many of Imogen's songs if you say that she "shies away from bass". I mean - Me The Machine, Run-Time, Minds Without Fear, Entanglement, Swoon? Most of Speak For Yourself (album) was pretty bass-rich as well. In any case, I'm sure she knows exactly how she wants to arrange and mix her songs, so patronizing her by saying what "she's got to make sure" was uncalled for.
