Lyrics:
Where are we? What the hell is going on?
The dust has only just begun to fall,
Crop circles in the carpet, sinking, feeling.
Spin me 'round again and rub my eyes.
This can't be happening.
When busy streets amass with people
Would stop to hold their heads heavy.
Hide and seek.
Trains and sewing machines.
All those years they were here first.
Oily marks appear on walls
Where pleasure moments hung before.
The takeover, the sweeping insensitivity of this still life.
Hide and seek.
Trains and sewing machines. (Oh, you won't catch me around here)
Blood and tears (hearts),
They were here first.
Mmm, what you say?
Mm, that you only meant well? Well, of course you did.
Mmm, what you say?
Mm, that it's all for the best? Of course it is.
Mmm, what you say?
Mm, that it's just what we need? And you decided this.
What you say?
Mmm, what did She say?
Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth.
Mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cut-outs.
Speak no feeling, no I don't believe you.
You don't care a bit. You don't care a bit.
(hide and seek)
Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth.
Mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cut-outs.
(hide and seek)
Speak no feeling, no I don't believe you.
You don't care a bit. You don't care a bit.
(hide and seek)
You don't care a bit.
You don't care a bit.
You don't care a bit.
(hide and seek)
You don't care a bit.

It's crazy how disembodied the popular part seems from the rest of the song, magical.

I'm convinced that's only because of its popularity. Listening to this song countless times now over the years, it's a very natural movement.

I wish I could hear this for the first time again. I used to take my friend's car on short midnight drives and listen to new underground releases on local radio. This had just come out and started playing on one of those eerie, liberating night drives. It was completely possessing and synchronized with the night in the most profound way.
I can’t drive but I know this exact feeling. When the perfect song just comes on and emanates the surroundings
Did you look out the window and pretend you were in a music video? Be honest.
Everyone always talks about the "Watcha say" part, but I think "oily marks appear on walls" part is just as beautiful

I love this song because it has a very haunting feel to it in my opinion, it's like a hug from someone who's not there. I guess the best way to describe it is when you trace your fingers over certain parts of your body and you get this tingling feeling all over your body. Its like that, but for 4 minutes and 26 seconds.

The way she sweeps the notes when singing "the sweeping insensitivity of this still life" is one of my favorite moments in music. It still gives me chills to this day.

I think it's a vocoder. My keyboard has one, where you can plug a mic into it and then play chords on the keyboard while you sing, and it'll take the "sounds" of your mouth and fit them to the notes you're playing.

this song honestly helped me realize there was something not right in my head, and at a very young age. I was about 10 or 11 when I first heard it at a dance competition. I couldn’t even pay attention to the dancers or the stage. I just sat with my jaw dropped listening to this masterpiece. I felt her pain, her words really etched out my own pain that was lying dormant. I told my mother that I was always sad so she took me to the doctor. by the time I was 13, i was diagnosed with anxiety disorder, clinical depression, and ptsd. I don’t know if I would have gotten the help I needed if I never heard this song. I have to take medication basically for the rest of my life, but at least I caught it when I did. 15 years later, I graduate tomorrow with a degree in Sound Recording Technology. we’ve watched so many videos with her in them. she’s an absolute legend for her contributions to music and is criminally underrated. thank you for everything Imogen

The fact that this song is about her remembering how she felt about her parent’s divorce when she was a kid makes this song grip the soul so much more. Pure poetry! Just wow!
What?
@@ssliperyslopee listen to the lyrics, she's singing about the stuff that happened when her parents divorced, 'oily marks appear on walls where pleasure moments hung before' mean pictures and paintings taken fown from the walls leaving only their discoloured marks. The chorus itself is about how people who divorce say its for the best, but its never for the best from the child's perspective, it's literally their world breaking apart.
@@Despotic_Waffle "crop circles in the carpet" imprints left by the furniture. One of my favorite lyrics.
@@ekulio And from paths tread a million times.
@@Despotic_Waffle There's no official song meaning. It's certainly a song about *loss*, however it's written ambiguously enough that many interpret it to even be about the holocaust.
Heap herself said:
"It's full of color, but it's colorless. It's full of meaning, but it has no meaning. It has so much for you as the listener to identify with it and fill in the gaps."
Personally, I can see how it fits well as a metaphor for divorce AND as an extremely disturbing metaphor for the Holocaust. The removal of possessions. feeling confused and scared by where you are now. Trains. (The infamous death trains) Sewing machines. (labour/death camps.)
it sounds like a sad robot girl who is left alone in a cellar or dump of some sort and she just stares at the ground, broken and cracked and hopeless, singing to herself for comfort as well as expressing her anger and jealousy of mankind

NORMAL PEOPLE BRING ME HERE (again)
She managed to make a song with almost zero musical backing entertaining and deeply emotional. You need an impressive understanding of melody to be able to do this. Something I don't really see anyone even mentioning, either. As a musician, I seriously admire the courage to put out something like this. No piano, no drums, no guitar, no bass, just vocals.
I need to love this comment
True words!!
Your name tho ❤️
Believe just vocals😅
Bon Iver does something similar with ‘Woods’
whats strange is that the mmm whatcha say part is weirdly different from every other part of the song
NB not really it’s because you’ve always heard the Jason derulo rendition of the song
It only sounds out of place cuz we all think of the Jason derulo song i think
i think it's because the mmm whatcha say part is fueled by anger in terms of the narrative of the song. it's the most aggressive part of the song and the lyrics themselves are what you'd typically hear in an argument fueled by anger and sarcasm. like before this part she doesn't understand why what's happening to her but is blindly accepting it. but the mmm whatcha say part is a turning point in her thinking and she's questioning her situation. and it ends so quietly as it seems that she knows that she doesn't have a choice but to accept her situation. at least that's what i think.
it's because that's the bit you are familiar with
Usually that part is called the bridge. It’s slightly different from the rest of the song, but it ties the message of the song together. Many songs have bridges, you just have to listen to the slight change in tune and beat.
This song is the young child’s perspective of their parents divorce
