Finally escaped an 8 year long abusive relationship and was dancing to this song with my infant in my moms livingroom. She came up and held us as I sobbed. My mom died a few months later but that was the safest I had felt in almost a decade. This song brings me so much comfort❤

Heard this on The Strangers movie. Haven't stopped listening to it since 2008. Always will be an unknown legend. Played it to my 2 year old with our nice headphones. Her eyes got huge and she reached out and grabbed my thumb and held on tight for the whole song. Now she keeps singing "Should we go outside?" The lyric "The difference between the sprout and the bean is a golden ring, it is a twisted string" will always make me think of me (the bean) and her ( the sprout).

It’s true tho. I did a presentation on her lyrics in a college English literature class and the sheer amount of references, the diverse imagery and the complex rhymes she threads through her lyrics literally outshone many of the 18th and 19th century poems we were reading in that class. No other contemporary songwriters can write lyrics that can be put side by side with Keats, and Shelley and not pale in comparison. @@natedyton61

14 years now... could it really be? But then again: Nowadays, Joanna is no longer the sort of singer you'd picture sitting in a tree wearing rural clothing. She turned into something much more universal and her music is so incredibly versatile and eclectic, offering so much divesity from album to album and from song to song - a symphony orchestra... and a banjo ("Emily"), reinaissance instrumentation ("Kingfisher") or a philosophical, yet heartbreakingly emotional bona fide pop ballad* that still has a lot more in common with "Stairway to Heaven" than with "My Heart Will Go On" ("Time, As a Symptom") - and that's not even scratching the surface...
*yes, I call it "pop" because the song is actually based around variations on a simple five-note motif, a simple, pleasant chord progression, no shifting polyrhythms or odd time signatures. It's just so expansive you'd never notice

When I was living in Brooklyn this would always come on after Saturday Night Live on local TV. Funny thing is she’s married to a former cast member now. But she’s from Nevada City which is close to where I grew up. This song spoke to me in 2004, it was like the soundtrack of my life at the time.

Fell in love with Joanna's music from the first time I heard it. Someone who could use "antediluvian" in their lyric was instantly my hero. I think this video brilliantly captures her deep creative spirit, highlighting the sarcasm of the lyric where she says "shallow work is the work that I do".
