Her voice is heavenly. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard a song that resonates within me so completely. I feel the heartbreak and know the depths that it reaches inside of me absolutely. It is a longing knowing that the battle rages on while losing so much of all things to it, whether it be people, hopes, aspirations and time. Losing touch with all of those and not allowing yourself a great many things knowing that the easy way was to take the outs instead of continuing to fight and then one day waking up and realizing that those things have passed is a deeply tough experience to swallow. Knowing that those are gone and I am now closer to the end than the beginning I fight on as there isn’t another choice truly available in any sense of the terms.
I'm too guarded. I would never be a vocalist. I could never let myself be so vulnerable. Over the years I have come to respect singers for their courage to express emotion.
A man named Walker introduced me to this song. We listened to it together for years. He recently passed away but listening to this song will always keep his memory alive. RIP Walker♥️
Absolutely love it.. many years later and it still gives me goosebumps! I remember the day I first heard Portishead, playing in a weird lil shop in a side street somewhere in downtown Orlando.. back in 1998.. I was working in the US for a year from hometown Johannesburg, South Africa. I remember the smell of the shop, the assistance behind the counter and even some of the goods on the counter (smiley face pinups!) .. this music was and is part of so many days in my life!
I was young. I did that. I learned it from listening to the Elvis Costello EP live at Hollywood High. I kind of regret it now, but I also kind of still like hearing it. People shriek, even when it is silence that brings the to rapture. Empathize.
I remember being like 16 yrs old listening to them , I am 40 now! The memories this brings back is amazing 💕 Now I've introduced my 14 yr old daughter to them ❤
I'm 50 now and a DJ of 36 years.. I remember receiving it on a white label. My Son who's 24 has taken samples from it and thrown em through an old 808.. The stuff he's creating is awesome.. Makes me proud.. Born wit headphones on.. Haha..
I just discovered Portishead a couple months ago, and I’m upset that they’ve been around almost literally my whole life and I never knew about their music. But now it’s something I look forward to everyday. Truly beautiful.
This song always makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, and sends a shiver down my spine. I saw them perform it live once, in 2011. It was spellbinding, unforgettable.
You know what it's unbelievable? To be 50 and to just discover Portishead !!! Man, it feels like a home I never knew I have... No, I don't recall the rock under which I lived in the 90's :))
Guys, I'm being 100% serious about this one. I think this song is at least in top 10 of the greatest songs of ALL TIME. It will forever be playing through our lives.
Wow, it's 10 years ago that I uploaded this video. Back then Portishead wasn't so well known (in my town anyway), and uploading purely for the sake of sharing good music. And look at the views now! Amazing. Thank you Portishead and thank you all that spent time on this track. One world, one love.
One of the few bands where the singers voice was even more impressive in person than on the studio albums. Saw them at coachella quite a few years back, truly beautiful.
The Internet was invented for gems like this song, I am sure of it. It's such a blessing. Please never take it down. Thank you Portishead for providing this 'soundtrack to life' song. Its ageless theme and timeless sound combine to make a work of art.
You can download the video (and any video on youtube) using a small application called dvdvideosoft (or any other youtube downloads application), that you can download for free. It also allows you to convert the videos to mp3, in case you're only interested in the sound.
Tina Tanzt and then, even more alone somehow, even more anguished, and unprotected, she repeats- surely that ain't right. I weep, gutted, each time. Such a bitter, and undeniable truth, laid bare.

Subtle, haunting and dream-like...this performance doesn't have crazy stage lights, pyrotechnics or backup dancers but it has a soul, it has atmosphere and a certain beauty that makes it more than just a song, its an experience. Sure wish I could have been there.
Legendary, it was something in the air back then, neither innocent or clean, yet very genuine, a feeling of loss and decadence, and I miss it, I can't sense it any more
I often remember past times by the feeling in the air. It fascinates me to think that despite photos etc we can never know that feel of the atmosphere in history. You’re right, the 90s had a quality, even though they were somehow less well known than the 80s.
"I got nobody on my side and surely that ain't right." All I have to do is think of that line to get instantly choked up. From the way Beth sings, I sense a slight hint of trying to downplay the pain, but it still comes through like an emotional dagger. It feels so human.
90's female lead singers are bad asses in music...Portishead, Morcheeba, Mazzy Star, Cranberries, Cardigans, Sunday, Sneaker Pimps, Bjork. Proud to be a GenX😘
Back in chicago 94-95 a kid named Gary introduced me and my friend Jose, the only 2 Hispanic kids on the block, to Portishead. Fast forward and I have a Beth Gibbons tattoo on my back. Wish I could've been at this performance. Thanks Gary and thanks for this video!!
I love that music supersedes race. Some of my favorite videos are of different races discovering music outside of their "normal" realm of what they would listen to. And almost everytime they fall in love. Most music does this, just have to be willing to actually listen and let it take ahold of you.
Glad for you and your boys, man! Hope the better life awaits your ahead and bad things stayed in past. Sorry for my bad grammary, I was hit hard by this comment and wanna write some good words for you.
Yesterday I heard this song after a long time, my mother was dying at the hospital. Seems like I felt it... she hadn't a good life yet, so I hope, she is happy, healthy and young again where she is now. RIP
Beth Gibbon’s voice has always made me feel at home. She has a way of drawing you in so that you are so undeniably connected to her consciousness that you start to forget yourself. It’s a unique form of intimacy that she shares with you freely. I experience this with some musicians and their instruments, but she captures it in a way that is beyond anyone else.
I wouldn't use user view counts as an indicator of what is "good". For example, Lil Pump and Kanye West have hundreds of millions of views for some videos... need I say more?
October 2, 2019 I listen to this almost every morning on my way to work, I drive a big rig. Long roads full of surprises. Never know how my day will end up going, bumps and waves along the way.
a great example of you don't need autotune, you just need *feeling* when you sing. Beth will always be one of my favotite singers because when you watch her, you feel that song.
"Aristotle taught that viewing tragic plays gave people emotional release (katharsis) from negative feelings such as pity, fear, and anger. By watching the characters in the play experience tragic events, the negative feelings of the viewer were presumably purged and cleansed. This emotional cleansing was believed to be beneficial to both the individual and society." -That's how this ruse of pity and glamorization of one's grief can be described.
@@StinkyGreenBudit did for a bit in the nineties, it's just that a lot of them tried to be portishead too much. Barely innovated, everyone was just making spacey beats and recruiting any female vocalist that sung in a whisper

Also try the debut album of Lamb. Start with Gorecki. Massive Attack Portishead and Lamb will forever be my 3 top tier Triphop bands.
Its crazy how many people come back to this everyday... this song is masterpiece!!!!
Word
Excelente obra prima. Parabéns.:.
Every time I hear it, I weep.
Possibly the most beautiful and heart wrenching song ever made.
this is one of the great moments in music history. my soul has rarely been touched like this
Her voice is heavenly.
She sings this with such emotion. Incredible.
I'm too guarded. I would never be a vocalist. I could never let myself be so vulnerable. Over the years I have come to respect singers for their courage to express emotion.
A timeless masterpiece. Portishead is out of this world
nah mate, they're just out of Portishead
A man named Walker introduced me to this song. We listened to it together for years. He recently passed away but listening to this song will always keep his memory alive.
RIP Walker♥️
This song is a trip...
Today Walker is alive with me. Love.

There's a special place in hell for people that desperately feel the need to " WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO " during every quiet part of every song ever.
NegaArson they are called americans
yep
Those people also leave their dog poop IN THE BAG out on the trail. Clueless Feckers.
I was young. I did that. I learned it from listening to the Elvis Costello EP live at Hollywood High. I kind of regret it now, but I also kind of still like hearing it. People shriek, even when it is silence that brings the to rapture. Empathize.
its a concert... people are gonna cheer
I remember being like 16 yrs old listening to them , I am 40 now! The memories this brings back is amazing 💕 Now I've introduced my 14 yr old daughter to them ❤
🤣 I'm 48 and I can't wait to let my kids hear this and see what they make of it? 🤷♂️ I still get close to tears listening to it! 👌🧡
I'm 50 now and a DJ of 36 years.. I remember receiving it on a white label. My Son who's 24 has taken samples from it and thrown em through an old 808.. The stuff he's creating is awesome.. Makes me proud.. Born wit headphones on.. Haha..
Same here!
Same
I concur!
Grew up in the 90s and I'm still ALWAYS jamming Portishead! Thank you guys! 🙌🙌
I just discovered Portishead a couple months ago, and I’m upset that they’ve been around almost literally my whole life and I never knew about their music. But now it’s something I look forward to everyday. Truly beautiful.

Good on yer Ron, I’m from Portishead whence they came.. beautiful music.
Вы удивитесь, но в 90х годах в России их знали и слушали 🤗
dont be upset , you could have missed them but you didnt. Enjoy!
Jolie. L'historie je suis colombiane
she felt it when she sang it. I felt it when I heard it. I'm in love with this.
Fantastic performance. Beths vocals and those strings are to die for
This song always makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, and sends a shiver down my spine. I saw them perform it live once, in 2011. It was spellbinding, unforgettable.
the hairs... on the back of your neck... stand up.... shiver... down your spine.. get that checked out. doesn't sound healthy at all.

Fucking yea..There is no words for something like this...

Wow this is amazing
Wow, it's 10 years ago that I uploaded this video. Back then Portishead wasn't so well known (in my town anyway), and uploading purely for the sake of sharing good music.
And look at the views now! Amazing. Thank you Portishead and thank you all that spent time on this track.
One world, one love.
any idea where to buy exactly that version in high quality?

should be easy to find mate
My friend, this is my favorite song. I've been listening to it for years now, I have to thank you so much for uploading it.
Brayan Flores Ramírez yea I agree it's Excellent! What a tune,. What a Voice?!!..Thanks for the Upload!..
Thank you for uploading it. After all these years this song still moves me deep inside.
One of the few bands where the singers voice was even more impressive in person than on the studio albums. Saw them at coachella quite a few years back, truly beautiful.
You lucky lucky man. Voice of an angel.
Excellent vocals for certain. Just tremendous
The Room; The Jordan*
The Internet was invented for gems like this song, I am sure of it. It's such a blessing. Please never take it down.
Thank you Portishead for providing this 'soundtrack to life' song. Its ageless theme and timeless sound combine to make a work of art.
You can download the video (and any video on youtube) using a small application called dvdvideosoft (or any other youtube downloads application), that you can download for free. It also allows you to convert the videos to mp3, in case you're only interested in the sound.
@@fantasitretas I think @jenstirrup9925 probably meant to keep this video here for others to see in the future.
I think this is musical perfection xx
This masterpiece of a song makes me feel both joyful and sad at the same time
catharsis, the emotional relief you feel from letting go.
You know you have a good singer when live sounds this awesome
Truth
If you watch the concert shes chainsmokin through the entire concert just about lighting one with the other. Different times for sure!
Beth is a Queen. She even smokes a cigarette on stage during this concert.
i think recorded live performances are over rated, but this is flawless
digital sound is terrible though
That line, "I got nobody on my side and surely that aint right" just blows me away every time. Delivered with so much feeling.
Carlos Rijs my favourite line!!
She sang that verse just as I was reading your post.
*Sings "I got nobody on my side and surely that ain't right"
*turns her head and looks behind her....
it's like she feels what she felt when writing it fresh every time she sings it...
ouch.
Tina Tanzt and then, even more alone somehow, even more anguished, and unprotected, she repeats- surely that ain't right.
I weep, gutted, each time.
Such a bitter, and undeniable truth, laid bare.
This song is so fucking good. Portishead is easily one of the most influential, yet least talked about bands of the early 90s.
Makes me think about life so deeply.
🎶
Ohh, can't anybody see
We've got a war to fight
Never found our way
Regardless of what they say
How can it feel, this wrong
From this moment
How can it feel, this wrong
Storm in the morning light
I feel
No more can I say
Frozen to myself
I got nobody on my side
And surely that ain't right
Surely that ain't right
Ohh, can't anybody see
We've got a war to fight
Never found our way
Regardless of what they say
How can it feel, this wrong

Subtle, haunting and dream-like...this performance doesn't have crazy stage lights, pyrotechnics or backup dancers but it has a soul, it has atmosphere and a certain beauty that makes it more than just a song, its an experience.
Sure wish I could have been there.
It's 2024 AND THIS SHIT STILL BANGS!! ONE OF THE DOPEST LIVE ALBUMS EVER!!
So true !
amen
Legendary, it was something in the air back then, neither innocent or clean, yet very genuine, a feeling of loss and decadence, and I miss it, I can't sense it any more
Said very well. I feel it too. ✌🏼🍀
Ohh yesss
I often remember past times by the feeling in the air. It fascinates me to think that despite photos etc we can never know that feel of the atmosphere in history. You’re right, the 90s had a quality, even though they were somehow less well known than the 80s.
@@anna-louisebrown8348 please . I would like to hear more about your perception on this matter
Your comment gave me shivers and deep feeling of sadness. Your description is so much on point.
"I got nobody on my side and surely that ain't right."
All I have to do is think of that line to get instantly choked up. From the way Beth sings, I sense a slight hint of trying to downplay the pain, but it still comes through like an emotional dagger. It feels so human.
Same here. It pierces right to your heart.
90's female lead singers are bad asses in music...Portishead, Morcheeba, Mazzy Star, Cranberries, Cardigans, Sunday, Sneaker Pimps, Bjork. Proud to be a GenX😘
The Breeders ❤️
You forgot Tracey Chapman 😁
Shelbymaldita some boomers also.
Pj Harvey
L7, 7Yearbitch, Bikini Kill so many girl-bands
What a masterpiece. This is my favorite from Portishead.
One of the most emotional captivating songs I've ever heard, her voice sounds so fragile that can't help but makes me cry everytime... wow
A moment of silence for those who never heard of Portishead
A moment of silence TO ALLOW THEM PLAY WITHOUT SCREAMS AND OVER REACTED APPLAUSES...
Amen.
One of the best songs ever written.
@@vicentedelacalle1598 YE well said! Fuckign rude and annoying. Cheer at the end sure but not every 30 seconds during the song.

This is my first time. It's wonderful.

I'd like to find Gary and thank him for you.
After a 16year marriage, a terrible devorce and now having myself back and my precious boys staying with me....this song is so incredibly soothing !
I hear ya
Glad for you and your boys, man! Hope the better life awaits your ahead and bad things stayed in past.
Sorry for my bad grammary, I was hit hard by this comment and wanna write some good words for you.
I hope for you the best
So haunting, soul piercing, and absolutely gorgeous song. Euphoria every time.
Yesterday I heard this song after a long time, my mother was dying at the hospital. Seems like I felt it... she hadn't a good life yet, so I hope, she is happy, healthy and young again where she is now. RIP
Bless you sister.
shell be happy looking over you
❤️
If she couldn’t find happiness here, the world didn’t deserve her in the first place
I have searched high and low for this deep and haunting song finally after several years I found it. Thank you you tube
That is almot poetry right there! Thank you for capturing what I also feel about her voice and art.
Masterpiece. That's the absolute perfection of music.
Love Beth's drop of her voice to her chest for "Regardless of what they say." Gets me every time.
I listen to this song about every year or so I never want to over play it. It’s too good I love to savour this absolute masterpiece.
That woman is legendary. She is a slayer. No one on earth like that Queen

I swear, not enough people appreciate this music!
xDark Sky555x You gonna campaign?
Dam right hauntinly beauitful
Amber Samson 41 million is not enough? There's nothing original here. This Mortal Coil and Cocteau Twins haven't amassed 41m views.
41M of views? No so bad eh.
I wouldn't use user view counts as an indicator of what is "good".
For example, Lil Pump and Kanye West have hundreds of millions of views for some videos... need I say more?

I listen to this almost every morning on my way to work, I drive a big rig. Long roads full of surprises. Never know how my day will end up going, bumps and waves along the way.
Hugo Colibrí very good you can write a date. Clever you.
This has got to be one of the best songs ever made. Man the power when those violins kick in then back to the vocals. Absolutely breathtaking
I remember tripping hard to this in college. Gives me chills to this day.
Me remember silent Hill
tripping to this would be absolutely crazy
a great example of you don't need autotune, you just need *feeling* when you sing. Beth will always be one of my favotite singers because when you watch her, you feel that song.
After almost 30 years this is still one of my fav albums
❤
Superb ❤❤❤
Timeless!!! I literally was 14 when I heard this beautiful voice and group. Timeless and beautiful!!!
My all-time favorite by Portsihead. Love this band and Beth Gibbons
NO MMS CON TU NADIE LA CONOCE. PERO TIENES RAZON EN QUE RIFAN CHINGONSISIMO
This is a perfect song for this somber moment in history, thank you for today’s recommendation Mr. Lynch.
That's how I got here, too.
"Aristotle taught that viewing tragic plays gave people
emotional release (katharsis) from negative feelings such as pity, fear, and anger. By watching the characters in the play experience tragic events, the negative feelings of the viewer were presumably purged and cleansed. This emotional cleansing was believed to be beneficial to both the individual and
society." -That's how this ruse of pity and glamorization of one's grief can be described.
Beautiful when I was 15 same at 42.

Ich bin 37 Jahre alt und habe diesen Song damals einmal gehört und mich verliebt. Ich suche seit 15 Jahren nach diesen Song!!!!!

One of the greatest live performances ever. Even better than the studio version
This whole set is top tier Portishead. Shame triphop never took off like all the other shitty genres did.
@@StinkyGreenBudit did for a bit in the nineties, it's just that a lot of them tried to be portishead too much. Barely innovated, everyone was just making spacey beats and recruiting any female vocalist that sung in a whisper
Every time I listen to Portishead...I feel as pure as a child.
