See our first day RIVER AVON (confused) Narrowboat trip from Stratford Basin to Luddington Lock!

- We start our narrowboat journey from just before Stratford Basin and head straight out on to the River Avon. It's much wider than we thought and there is a lot of wildlife. The thing you notice the most is the space and how different things are. For instance the signs that guide you into locks and away from weirs have us confused.

There is nothing sad about wearing a life jacket, you are very sensible. I wear mine. Xx
It was really good to meet you both at Luddington and pleased your journey on the Avon started out well, looking forward to the next episode. Take care both of you.
"He kept trying to paddle up the weir" I would definitely try to do that too lol it's the same urge you get to try to go up the down escalator
It did look like fun
Why would you want to kayak up an escalator:-)
Kath is right to be wearing a life jacket. It's a river and currents can be treacherous and dangerous. Stay safe, both of you, and have fun!
Thank you for your beautiful videos ! I enjoy them every Sunday.
Kath loves a bit of 'safety first'
I just want to say you both are buitiful. Thanks for sharing your life with us. Love from New Zealand. Xx. Stay safe..
Great to watch. It brought back happy memories from several years of boating on the Avon.
Great to hear!
River cruising looks glorious!
It really is
Hi Anne Marie & Kath. Just got back from allotment and opened up RUclips to see your latest vlog. So as you suggested I made cuppa and chilled out watching the vlog. 😃😎👍
Sounds great!
As soon as the video starts I'm thinking "Kath's all properly river safety conscious and then there's that scofflaw Anna sans life vest *tsk tsk* Kath, don't let her be a bad influence on you ;)" and then 8 minutes on, Anna tells on herself! Definitely some chuckling there. In all seriousness, it looks like some lovely cruising, and sounds like the mooring was exactly what you wanted. I loved the candid shot of Kath opening the stern doors and letting Munchy out. Thanks as always for taking the same to put this together to share for us, and please stay safe and well out there! Fingers crossed the weather turned out good (if hot) with calm waters!
Our cat Stephen can relate to Munchie being "tuckered out" after twenty minutes of exploring new territory. Stephen has the same routine every day, but to investigate unknown lands must be extra challenging 🐈
I honestly hadn't thought of that. I'll cut him some slack in the future.
@@TheNarrowboatExperience 😂
A sure sign that I stayed up far too late on a Saturday here in Texas is that your video posted before I turned in!
Have a lovely sleep.
@@TheNarrowboatExperience Thank you! I certainly shall; had a bit much whisky and that does mean a deep sleep for me.
Loved watching this vlog again. We have planned to follow the same route to Tewksbury. Nice to see the mooring spots and also how the locks work on the Avon. Miss you guys lots ❤🧸🧸
thumb-up for kitty nap-time =-) Happy rivering upon Avon Ladies
The best!
Always safety first, danger never takes a day off 😆😆
Well, this one was a nice little treat. Lots of cat action, including the very cute "he's a real cat". Plus a new river to explore, with different views, different locks, and lots more space. And meeting a couple of viewers too. Love it all ladies, keep up the great work!
We love 'meeting' viewers- mostly by yelling across sterns. lol
God morning ladies so glad to see you so excited about the River Avon, not sure Alice and Munchkin agree but they should be pleased to know they are "Real "
lI oved Annemarie's Shakespearean tidbits and the multi coloured arrows helps a lot to orientate things You both look happy being on a river its all just water and you guys are experts on water be that water points ,canals or rivers or just plain old rain.Great blog ladies,I love all your posts
So glad you liked it.
Hello girls well done on the river and on the locks looks lovely place to be always better to wear a life jacket better to be safe than sorry the last thing you need is to fall in the river ah love your cats so sweet love the way they explore everywhere you stop the. Get back on the boat have fun on the river
Wow nice videos love the paintings I paint in oils? Just a little bit of help if you are in a double boated lock on your own. and your about to open the gate only open the one that is on your boats side as when the lock fills the water will rush into the lock towards the other side of the lock thus the water will hold or push against your boat keeping it steady ? best wishes Ken
Just completed a trip from Tewkesbury (Where our boat is moored) to Stratford and back. Took my Grandchildren on that ferris wheel which was a bit of a moment...Grandad had to be brave :-) Above Evesham I'd recommend a narrow boat, or preferably a hovercraft or air-boat. We've got a Mercruiser with an outdrive and we spent most of the time scraping on the bottom. Below Evesham its controlled by sluice gates so the water level is around 8 - 10 foot. Above Evesham its 8 - 10 inches, or at least thats how it felt :-) Oh, and you're absolutely right. Don't go anywhere near a lock unless you've got a life jacket on (Mr Cruising The Cut please take note!!) . One slip and you're a gonner !!
Beautiful Thanks for sharing. ✌❤🤗
you are going past where i used to live, I lived at Bidford upon avon at amooring marine called "The moorings" , right by the bridge which you go under, beware the bridge current there as it can be fast on days after rain, which will be fine at the moment.. enjoy the river.. oh yeah wear life jacket as the current can easily sweep u away.
Welcome to the Avon girls.you have chosen a river with loverly views all the way along it.Pershore is nice stock up with provisions.Eversham is nice but i always use moorings past the main moorings and about 400 yards before Abbey bridge.Tewkesbury nice moorings at river lock.great fish n chips a short walk away.enjoy your cruising.
Lovely video ladies. There are lots of lovely mooring spots. The locks are far trickier going upstream. If you go out onto the Severn the locks are manned and a totally different experience. Enjoy. Clare
Yes, we found the locks going down stream to be just a gentle 'plop'
Good vid enjoyed very much thanks 👍🏴
Thanks 👍
Hi lady's ( Steak Pie @ The Black boy. remember? )
We live just outside Stratford, Sorry I Missed You. We keep clear of all the tourists in Town these days. I only come in occasionally.
Still it looks as if you enjoyed the place. Well ford is an interesting place. Enjoy the Historic Bridge.
Have a Happy & Safe Journey 🎨😘
Thanks
I absolutely love the Avons , please please do a slow tv realtime journey with the camera on the bow for a couple of hours like cruising the cut does... The longer the better! I use the videos not only to meditate but as muse because I'm a small boat builder , I can sit for hours just staring at the screen with pen and paper in my hand and as I wonder in the beauty of the river things just hit me, I guess it just totally mesmerize's me and clears my mind of other things and I'm able to put pen to paper and see construction issues before building starts saving me time, money and materials . Love the vids, I look forward to more from the Avon. Thanks .mikey.
No, I'll let CC keep that all to himself. We don't have the data allowance for that, or a bow camera. Sorry.
Well navigated! :)
A full twenty minutes of awake time! Impressive! time for a nap....
Poor Munchy, life is exhausting for a 'real cat'
So lovely in every way! I had a good time right along with you. Love to see all the beautiful boats you pass: different shapes, sizes, year built, colors. Thank you friends! You are fabulous!
Great video again. We were there a couple of weeks ago sat by the weir next to lock 2, during a visit to Stratford. Nice to know they have cleared up the rubbish. It's just a shame people think it's ok to dump the rubbish there in the first place.
Such a shame isn't it.
Just discovered your video. Thank you for your program. I will be pleased to follow.
The river is very different to the canal. Take care I think you are both very brave!
Thank you very much!
Looks beautiful girls, stay safe & enjoy.
We will!
I’ve done it The the Stratford Avon to
Tuexbury we worked one of these locks at night to get back to the pub for an evening meal, we found the mooring difficult as Birmingham Fishing club had most of the river edging
Nice Video very informative Cath you look much nicer without the cap You both lovely girls
Glad you enjoyed it
awesome beautiful !
very nice place being on the Avon, my main reason why am coming to back GB, and look for a nice Narrow Boat. John in NZ Kia ora
Really enjoyed watching the vlog having breakfast and cruising along with you ladies it looks really nice on the river Avon please take care both of you and the cats till next time and thankyou
Glad you enjoyed it
Hello there, memories of Stratford 46yrs ago? work n live there,
nice scenery n interesting viewing, nicely put over?,
Thank you for sharing your video cheers take care see you soon
Following various vlogs I have been thru Stratford and on the River Avon a couple of times already this year..but you give it a different perspective. It looks very different thru your eyes and I love it. Hugs and keep safe....
Great to hear!
Our Avon here in West Aust is used for white water sport in the winter time and a race called the Avon Descent, it is only really running and full in the winter, your Avon is beautiful.
Thanks
Honestly love the river Avon very pretty looking forward to this journey with you guys :D
Thanks so much!
Loving the River action, and being with you two for a wonderful experience, out of the comfort zone, since I'm locked down again, its nice to see life is still alive.
The cat on the Narrowboat does stand out.
A beautiful lively environment.
excellent.
I love it - it’s so pretty! Seeing Munchy sleepy after his 20 minutes of awake time was adorable ❤️ xx
Like?? LOVE!! What an amazing journey, thank you so much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I was surprised at the number of folk in Stratford there wasn't a lot of social distancing going on , I think you did the right thing moving on the Avon is a beautiful river .
Safe cruising ladies.
It surprised me too.
Great little cruise, and very calm. Great shots of the river.
Great video, the river looks so calm, peaceful and beautiful.
another nice little trip.. nice chatter and you passed under a rusty looking bridge which I thought may be railway. Looked it up and yes it was but it is now a cycle/footway and nearby are a couple of old railway carriges that are now used for cycle hire. Also on google is a photo of where you stopped to moor up. 60 years ago I formed and ran a cycling club and 18 of us cycled overnight to Stratford Upon Avon arriving at 5am. We set up a mini camp in the park, side of river and cooked breakfast on primas stoves, solid brass and I still have mine. Don't think we would be allowed to do that these days amonst the flower beds and riverside walkway x
So interesting. Great research.
Oh the kitties were so sweet! Lovely vlog ladies. Thanks for sharing
Our pleasure!
Gongoozling! Fans of the excellent Susie Dent? Love it, bring back these fantastic words I say
Fantastic start to a river cruise! Can’t wait to see the rest of the Avon. Keep safe and wear life jackets!
Please do a video on the technical aspects of your boat. The nerd in me is really curious, especially with the solar and battery situation. I remember you saying when you first got Lazy Days that you were going to see how the three remaining batteries do. Are they still in?
We might do something like that in the future. I know Kath has all sorts planned for the solar installation
Hi both. Great vlog this week. I was John's passenger on " Pembroke". The boat you passed on The Avon. It was lovely meeting you both later that day down at Luddington Lock. Since then I've been following your adventures and catching up with older vlogs. All very entertaining and informative. Keep up the good work and stay safe.
Excellent to meet you and glad you've become an avid narrowboat watcher too now. lol
Good too see you on the river ladies. it really is a lovely river the sights are amazing. we came past you on the stratford canal on narrowboat Maria we did the fastest rubbish drop 😂 enjoy 👍
I’ll be camping at Ludington.....Michigan (USA) next week😁. Ludington, Michigan is not located on a river, but is locatted on a Great Lake in Michigan called Lake Michgian. 🤷🏼♀️. Great vlog as always!!!! I truly wish we had canals in the USA.
Very cool!
Stratford-upon-Avon is always busy busy lol. lovely river the Avon don't know far your down your travelling but Tweksbury is a nice town. And if you venture onto the Severn give Gloucester a look. Take care 😊😊😊
Thanks for the tips!
Looks as if you're going to enjoy your time on the River, looks fantastic Ladies
Hope so!
Hello from Canada 🇨🇦
Morning!
Excellent girls, excellent. Welcome back. Lovely scenery. Life jacket? I'd definitely need that - plus water-wings + an inflatable + flares...
Lol. Best to be safe
A GREAT vlog. Good to see the kitties out an about and river cruising looks idealic with all that space and interesting reed beds. Take care and NEVER stop.
Glad you enjoyed it!
As you approach Welford on Avon you'll see some 'Park Homes' on your left beside the river bank. That's were I live ! give me a wave!! 👍
I always enjoy your vlogs, thanks for posting them - love the kitty cautions as you never know if there is a dog or other horrible monster
Lovely - so understand Kath's hasty decision then nail biting after thoughts! Much better than being surrounded by people at a stressful time tho - and the river looks just beautiful - hope Munchy and Alice came round to that point of view eventually!
Yes exactly.
Another lovely video girls, have you been on the Leeds Liverpool canal? We live near Chorley in Lancashire. There is a great ice cream stop called Frederick's, very famous around here, I think the Fox's stopped once. It's between Chorley and Adlington. If you ever get up this way , let us know and will bring you a homemade Bara Brith.....welsh tea loaf. Stay safe the four of you. Sadly we lost our gorgeous little Penny cat a couple of weeks ago to cancer . Missing her so much. Your cats are are lovely and very good bless them . Sorry for the long message. Dave and Sue 🙂
No I haven't been there yet. Will put it on my list especially if you're offering to bring cake.
Hope you enjoy the Avon, it's a delightful river. However it can turn nasty very quickly we two years ago we got caught in a flash flood , had to spend two days at Offenham. The ANT guys were very kind and helpful even bringing us suppies. Some of the lock landings further down are rather short , the one at Eversham lock is right by the weir
Oh no!
Made my Sunday morning with your laid back chug up the Avon, delightful, Guy
Wow, thanks so much
Excellent intro to this week's vlog! 😉
The river Avon is delightful, as long as you can get into your chosen mooring. We tried to moor at Luddington (lovely!) on the way to Stratford, but it was full, being the weekend!
We live near Pershore so know it well, plus I use to be a Reach Master on the Avon years ago, and worked for Evesham Marina.
Hope you enjoyed the Avon, well worth the licence!
Really enjoying this cruise . Did the Avon in 1976 it is still as beautiful!
Glad you enjoyed it
At 8:30 interesting railway bridge! :)
Thanks, guys for a smashing Vlog. Lovely calming pace and scenery from someone who's overheating in sticky London.
Glad you enjoyed it
Good morning you beautiful girls, lovely to see you both looking so happy!
Lovely vlog too!
Have fun, but please stay safe! :-)
Thank you! You too!
That was a enjoyable vlog and it was something different too....stay safe....thanks for sharing
Thank you! Will do!
I’m predicting more river travel for Lazy Days, the scenery is beautiful, great episode!
Glad you liked it Yes we have a lot more to come.
Thank you, that was a great video. I love watching your adventures. Best wishes, ilona
Thank you too!
Fantastic. Love your journeys.
Glad you like them!
Absolutely loved the vlog. Although we have been on canals have only had mooring homes on rivers.
Glad you enjoyed it
I had just got done adding a Jam session to my channel and then I could sit back and join your river cruise. Life is good.
A bit like the M1 at first, but tranquil later. Thanks for this.
John, Ontario, Canada
He’s actually real! He’s a real cat! No wayyyy 🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏
Best ever quote
Very behind on vlogs at the moment so only just catching up! Loving your Stratford Canal vlogs and River Avon as we are hoping to do this next year (along with Gloucester & Sharpness), but who knows whether life will throw us any more curveballs! Nice to see Munchy and Alice exploring the mooring spots too and thanks for the pizza recipe with cauliflower base. Just a question, did you have to pay to moor where you did in Stratford Itself on the Avon? Take care, thanks
I have never seen a salmon in a kayak before!
hope Alice & munchie remained safe and that they didn't decide to climb any trees to near the river and fall in, when the 2 cats went to edge of the bank under that tree my heart was in my mouth as I thought Alice was about to get pushed in when Munchie walked past her under that low hanging tree,
Yes, I agree it was so narrow, but I thought I best let them do it while I was watching.
Munchy a real cat, wow i always thought he was a robot cat!!!
I left that in just to clear up rumours of him being a robot
We have used a pedestrian chain ferry a Stratford upon Avon powered by the boat man. A bit small for social distancing.
I bet it was
I enjoyed this little vlog
I'm so glad!
The river Avon looks beautiful. Would have been cruising it myself this year (hire boat) were it not for the lockdown. Hey Ho!!
River Avon actually means River River......Avon is the anglicised version of the Welsh word Afon meaning....you guessed it River
Interesting thanks
Same root as abhainn in Irish.
Like the place Breedon hill, which the Avon skirts round. Bree, and Don, both mean 'hill' too.
So you can see hill, hill, hill from the river river :-D
From Celtic
What a wonderful journey! Thanks for the video. I love that you have cats on the boat. Ours are so attached to their home and many gardens they roam. How do your cats get on and do they always come back when you want. Best J
Our cats know the boat is there home and that it moves. They stay close to the boat mostly.
It is better to wear a life-jacket and not need it than to need it and not be wearing one.
True.
it's called "condom theory"!
Good on you kath, Ozzys always have to break the rules ;-)
Really enjoyed this vlog guys needed this on a shit day 😃
Sorry your day was bad. I hope it improves. x
Pershore is also very pretty, and an ASDA within walking distance.
"First attach the anchor" brings to mind that there are YT videos about ships where it was discovered their anchor was un-attached. "Ooops."
I seem to recall a certain SS Minnow had that issue as well.
Lovely vlog...lovely river...and you are both very calm on the river...don't think the cats were impressed by it.. .... I did like the ' It's a real cat ' comment....but not sure what Munchy thought about it
They definitely noticed the sound difference on the river when we moored up.But they seem fine.
Thanks he blog what a shame you did not show us around Stratford,
Yes, agreed.
Morning ladies lovely video. river avon look lovely how soon before we see you up in yorkshire trying some of the best rivers in the uk which are river ouse from goole to york and ripon river trent tidal from cromwell to keadby Sheffield navigation leeds and Liverpool which we are starting doing this year
Sounds lovely but at the moment we are more south.
Oh, no through the hedge ;/ how sad. But the River looks awesome. Much different vegetation.
And it would have been an awesome place to show you around.
Yes, some of us in far off lands crave for a view of ye olde English village whether it be closed or not.
PS Sorry I forgot to mention I have owned two boats my self and family? and did all the locks on my own thats opening closing and driving the boat into the locks best wishes Ken
Lookin good girls keep it cool 😎
Thanks
