The WORST game of 'narrowboat chicken' you'll ever see (Strensham to Tewkesbury River Avon)

  • Our last day on the River Avon wouldn't be compete with out a game of 'narrowboat chicken' as we pass through King John's bridge at Tewkesbury. It's a tricky turn with no visibility.
We finally reach Tewksbury on our Narrowboat Journey along the River Avon. It's our last day on the River Avon and it is spectacular.
Unfortunately our journey by narrowboat is paused after Tewkesbury lock because of a high tide on the River Severn.

Great to see you enjoyed River Avon. I had 2 weeks last August and being my first River and solo was petrified. However it was beautiful and calm and my best journey in my relative 2 years as a Liveaboard. Hope you decided to stay at Tewkesbury, wonderful historic town and nice moorings on the pontoons just at the side of the lock.
I carried on down to Gloucester and Sharpness on River Severn, well worth it xx

Talking about maneuverability of the GRP cruisers brings to mind a thing Dad told me a few decades ago during his years in the Navy. Ships have a "fineness ratio", also called "length to beam ratio" and proportionally shorter/wider, ships will turn tighter than proportionally longer/thinner, ships, even if the longer/thinner one is smaller. For instance, A number of the USN battleships could out-turn the far smaller destroyers, and a couple times that almost led to collisions in fleet formations.

thanks ladies for pointing out that metal boats enter locks before grp. Having cruised extensively on both I am always amazed how many metal boats "invite" grp's to enter first usually out of manners but often without thinking that grps bounce off metal boats but metal boats can go through grp, also it may be worth pointing out to some metal boat owners that the grp's handle and react differently from the heavier boats therefore different speeds and boat handling may not be what they would expect.
Having only recently done the same trip I would like to say thanks for sharing your trip and bringing back many memories

A couple of weeks ago on a hot sunny day in Henley, I was walking along the prom' and saw this Jet Black 'Menacing' Narrowboat (Just like Yours :-) was turning in the middle of the river up near Marsh Lock - He was making a right Pigs-Ear of it and held the boat-traffic up in BOTH directions while he got himself deeper in the Mire .... He eventually moored up - Facing the WRONG way..... I hope he wasn't staying overnight, a narrowboat sank down there a few years ago after it filled with water and the pump wasn't left on :-)

When I sailed down Canal Du Midi, at points where you could not see you had to sound horn, there were signs (believe it or not they have "cross roads" where a river dissects the canal perpendicularly) often just after a road bridge. And sailing across the Etang de Thui (second largest inland lake in Europe was an experience, especially without binoculars.

I love the crocodile sign at 1:05 and the crocodile's head at 1:-6. What a great joke. Just a question about the Rules of River vs Canal. I see that Kath was wearing her water safety harness, is that "required" for river travels?
Kath's boat handing at the tight lock entrances is just superb. I don't think I could be anywhere near as smooth as she is.

Crocodiles! I had to rewind and freeze to make sure I read that correctly. You didn't make any comments on this so I guess it's no big deal - but - crocodiles - in England! You don't explain what a GRP (?) boat is. Is it a wide-beam? Great fun as usual. I'm always glad to see more of your wonderful cats, indoors or out. You take them for granted but cats are part of your life and to see them contentedly sleeping or doing what cats do - ignoring you (!) is always a welcome cutaway. Stay safe and well.

Being from N America, I also was curious about these 2 things. I searched both. I found out that GRP is glass-reinforced plastic. We would call these boats “cabin cruisers”. And, I found some news articles about solitary sightings of “crocodiles” around Bristol. We really do have their cousins, alligators, living in the lakes and water courses in the hot, humid southeastern portions of N America, where freezing temps are rare & brief, much to their benefit. 🙂🐊

Thanks to the recent demonstration by David, of Cruising the Cut, I quickly realized why the GRP cruiser let you enter the lock first. David demonstrated how it is sometimes necessary to "nudge" the first boat in the lock over, by the second boat in a shared lock. If you "nudged" that GRP, I gather that would not be good due to the difference in weight and construction of the two vessels. It would be like a Peel P50 getting nudged by a lorry. :-)

Some very good helming there through the bridge arch and into the lock. As a sort of ex seagoing yacht designer I am interested in the problem of steering narrowboats, especially with strong crosswinds. Someone said a bow rudder would be no good as it would collect too much debris. However I think it might be designed so it wouldn't. I wondered about twin stern rudders but feel that the most effective improvement that could be made to any narrowboat, including existing ones, would be to replace the flat plate rudder with one with a hydrofoil section. This will definitely make the helm more responsive. Perhaps such rudders exist already. They would not be difficult to make in steel, wood or fibreglass. No self respecting modern yacht would be seen sporting a flat plate rudder.

Tewkesbury is definitely worth a day or two, plenty to do and see! You don't have to go up the lock, there are mooring below, just past the lock entrance, you usually have to pay the lock keeper, but the charge may still be suspended, it was when we were up there earlier in the year. (When I saw you at Stratford!)👍

Great vlog ladies, although the "cow interlude" seemed like a load of bullocks to me! I was pleasantly surprised to see not one, but two Nauticus 27 GRPs, at 5:27 & 13:00, which is the same as my boat. Also, shame on you for letting the cats out when there are crocodiles around! 😂
