G'day Mark.
Thank you for putting up this video and dispelling the ridiculous myths around the 50BMG. You are pretty much spot on with your evaluation of the 50 BMG's capabilities in the real world. They are no-where near as scary as people think. I have competed in two, FCSA 50 BMG 1000 yard World Titles in the U.S.A and three Australian FCSA 1000 yard titles. I've also attended two, King of 2 Mile comps in the USA and was on a team in 2019 as a spotter. There are very few 50BMG rifles now used in ELR events because as you point out, there are more inherently accurate calibers such as the 416 Barrett or 460 Styer for example. 50 BMG's can be accurate if you put the time into load development and use premium components just like any other caliber but this is a very expensive exercise at around $ 15 a shot. I have been in the pits marking targets with 800 gr 50 BMG's passing a few feet over my head and can confirm there is no mythical limb ripping energy to be felt anywhere. Cheer's.
Cheers Owen, thanks Man
I'm fairly sure I saw a video of a guy shooting a 50BMG through a house of cards without disturbing the cards. That is how little air even a giant 750 grain bullet displaces.
I learnt over easter don't lie prone when there's a bull ant nest near.
Lol, Cheers Bor
You tore down the myth, the legend, but you tore it down with respect.
Cheers Man, thanks
There was a guy that shot a doe deer with a .50 BMG. He made the absurd claim that “the bullet passed so close to the head that the shockwave blew its eyes out.” And everyone just ate out of his hand -and still do .
It was clear as day the round went into one eye and blew out the other eye. His evidence that didn’t happen was that the skull was in tact. Not understanding that a match grade hornady 50 bmg at 100 yards +/- in the deers eye just slipped through. It didn’t transfer any real energy into the skull and there wasn’t enough fluid for hydrostatic shock to pop the skull into pieces. In Iraq and Afghanistan . I have some beautiful examples of guys that their heads turned into halloween masks after absorbing lots of energy from the 50 bmg. But. Those again were through the skull that helps the bullet transfer energy into the target followed by the 2900+/- fps hydrostatic shock that turns the brain and skill into an organic pipe bomb .
Went on a bit of a rant but im pretty sure Hollywood and this guys youtube video are the reason for this rumor.
On another note …. I would love to see you do a ballistics gel test at elr . Not sure if its legal there but those ballistic dummy lab torsos would be interesting to see hit at 3000+ yards. How you ( Sam ) would go about identifying a hit would be magical. But this would be awesome to see nonetheless.
I wish you both the best and i hope Australia doesn’t keep going down the path of gun control legislation!
Thanks Man, and no sorry we are target shooters here, will leave ballistic gel to the hunters and the folks pushing the sensation button, Cheers
Typically excellent common sense stuff from information derived from practice in the real world. We expect nothing less from Mark, and he hits it square on the head again here. Thanks again mate, long may you continue!
Thank you Geoff, Cheers
Very well put mate 👍If only we had more people who used common sense and understanding like yourself making decisions in our country instead of politicians who rely on fear and hysteria.
I can definitely vouch for the effects of the barrel moving before the bullets been mentioned at 2:50. I recently let about 10 people have a shot of my .50 at 400M and the vertical dispersion between different shooters using varied techniques of holding the rifle, loading the bipod and shooter mass was pretty staggering to see.
Keep up the good work 👍👍
Cheers Stuart, thanks Man
When the 50 BMG was made I think it was meant for accuracy by volume not shot to shot precision it's doable but I think being a anti material round it's more suitable for accuracy by volume
Cheers Allen, thanks
You just killed my plan of defeating a tank with the 50 BMG. I figured if I missed the projectile would knock the turret off with its shockwave.
Lol, cheers
I truly love your practical, real wold approach to things. I have no doubt your building and tuning of cars is the exact same way. Honest and ethical
Thanks James
Love listening to your knowledge about these things. Thank you for making these videos.
Cheers Brad, thanks
Keep them coming MarkandSam, nice, clear, concise information and no crap. All the best from Ireland.
thanks Man
Thanks for all your time and effort educating us.
God Bless
Cheers Man
A buddy of mine and I went in on a 50bmg rifle because, well, 50 cals are cool and Modern Warfare 2. Everything you said in this video is spot on from our experiences.
1) I can punch the same groups or better at 800 with my very nice white oak barreled 308 and match ammo.
2) Tossed many a round less than an inch from objects (meat, glass, paper, etc.) at 40ish yards with no effect to the objects. I wish missing something by a few inches blew it up with this round...would be able to brag a lot more about my 1200m shots lol.
3) We have constructed a few walls / structures down range to test penetration and power. While it does do more damage on average than something like a 308, it's much less than video games or movies would have you believe. However, we did get out hands on some legit SLAP and Raufoss rounds (thank god no TB accidents were had) and they do work. SLAP goes through just about anything in front of it while Rauf frags anything behind the wall. You're on the money with bullet type equaling penetration.
Your content is amazing and I hope you continue posting videos for many years to come!
Cheers Man, thank you
Very well presented and informative without any subjectivity and hype.
Cheers Man, thanks
Excellent explanations Mark dispels a lot of Myths on the BMG
Cheers Rich
I've worked part-time in guns stores for a long time and I've heard so much gun mythology. Always tried to counter it with calm logic and reason like what you so admirably use on your channel. It was interesting that it tended to be the more experienced and knowledgeable shooters who clung most firmly to various myths because they *knew* it was true because they were *there* when it happened. I am guessing it is some kind of sunk-cost thing going on where they have based so many decisions and paid so much money over time based on those myths that they can't let them go whereas a new person is just like, "oh, I guess it is not true."
Yep, lol, Cheers
Logic, knowledge and actual facts; just what we need in the crazy world we live in. Thanks Mark.
Thanks Dave, Cheers Man
Awesome Video. Very Informative and Yes it Certainly shattered the Myths surrounding the Ol 50 cal. I can Hear the Wailing and Gnashing of Teeth from the Shooting Community already and I'm down here in Alabama. Lol. Thanks so much because that Myth needed addressing long ago.
Lol, thanks James, Cheers Man
Excellent Points Mark and Right on The Money Facts On The 50BMG 😀😊
Thanks Chris
Thanks Mark. Another excellent mythbusting video. It's a shame that the policy and law makers in Australia don't inform themselves of the facts before launching into ill-conceived gun legislation. Whilst I defend the authority of a legislature to govern in the interests of collective security, when it's driven by paranoia and ignorance it becomes simply another assault upon and erosion of the civil liberties that made our Australian society great. In this age of arm chair experts who mostly have only movies and video games as actual experience we're seeing a lot of foolish changes imposed in the name of public safety that create a slippery slope towards the devolution of society. What would have been seen by most only a few years ago as the activity of a police state is today heralded as enlightened progress. It's a very sad state of affairs. Please keep up the great work Mark.
Cheers Man, thanks
Back in the 1980s, I was flight instructing in Burlington, Vermont. As we passed near the radio beacon (VOR), we heard a loud BANG. No engine or airframe problems found after we immediately landed. A 30 caliber bullet hole (smooth and round) was found later by our A&P mechanic. In the bottom of the right wing. About a foot to the right of my seat. Which was protected by a thin piece of airplane skin and some paint. I was lucky. WillyB
Yes, very, Cheers Will
I Agree with George completely, And With you . Say Hello to Sam for me. Take Care .
Thank you Joe, Cheers
Good to hear somebody talking real. Yea ha, south Western Australia
Thanks Dan
Thanks for the info and sharing your knowledge
Cheers Man
Thanks great informative talk.
Cheers
Practical take on the reality of the 50 bmg. Everything has a purpose, as long it stays within it's actual parameters.
Cheers
Some interesting details there mark. Thanks
Cheers
Always excellent videos. Thank you. When will yall be moving to Texas?
Lol, Cheers
Great content as usual :) With the plane flight path bit Mark I'm wondering if they were thinking about the arc of the projectile when shooting at long ranges.
Thanks and lol no, explained in video, Cheers
@@markandsamafterwork Yeah I know it wouldn't, but I think some people (more non shooters) think that the arc goes way way up into the sky, so was kinda thinking you might have explained that even in elr the arc isn't that high and a plane would need to be flying extremely low. ( I know there is a way of working out how high it would go)
Great info and advice as always Mark.
About the recent local stunt, I’m given to believe the range as used wasn’t certified for 50BMG, not having a recognised suitable over-shoot key way. Very naughty.
All double standards.
Yep, too true, cheers Rob
Very good video thanks for sharing
Thanks Dave
Great content as always. Realistic common sense.
Cheers Paul
Great content thanks for sharing
Thanks John
Absolutely excellent video!
Cheers Man, thank you
As per usual Mark what your saying makes perfect sense
Thanks Nick, Cheers
I would have never imagined most of those myths. It’s simply a larger projectile traveling at considerably slower velocities weight to fps compared to average .308 diameter projectiles traveling at the same velocities if not more.
Well put Mark thanks for clearing the air on this without clearing the air with some mythical shockwave!
Lol, Cheers Man, thanks
Great video as always.
Thanks Phil, Cheers
Almost 500 likes in 12 hours. Damn good content mate.
Thanks Man, Cheers
Great work again
Cheers Mike
Very interesting and informative video.
Cheers Jay
Just great info in general and I have to say that you seem to be getting more comfortable Infront of the camera/ behind the counter.
Cheers Stumpy, thanks man
Very well said. I have a 50 cal myself. All I can say it’s a tool for a specific purpose.
Cheers Ed thanks
Hi Mark, back in the early eighties my Brother in law was cleaning out his gutters in Wembley, Perth and found a 303 projectile.
Swanbourne not far from there.
Thanks Will, Cheers
Great content thanks. Love shooting my 50 BMG.
Thanks Charles
Great video
Thanks Mike
Well said Mark 👍👍
Thanks Lyndon
Great informative video! What’s your guys take on the 14.5x114mm round?
Not something we've used, Cheers
Hi Mark
Love your videos and ELR info!
What is your thoughts regarding 6GT? Something you would consider?
Thanks Luan, and not used one sorry, Cheers
Yes please 🙏 more 50bmg
Cheers Mike
BEST content on the internet!!!!!
Thanks Paul
@@markandsamafterwork I was always told to tell the truth. You and Sam have the best videos. My only regret is I haven't been following you for the whole time. You better believe I don't miss one now. Thank you so much for the straight up, no B/S content that you provide. It truly makes my day to hear the alert that y'all have put out another video. Thanks again
Very true all of that. If I had too guess is say the myth of the 50 gain an enemy soldier out by the shockwave probably started when a bullet went close by someone's ear with a supersonic crack & startled them enough to make them go down, but not permanently. As far as penetration yes APIT will absolutely destroy you're hardened targets, but not ball.
Thanks Richard, Cheers
Thank you
Cheers
Always understood that a 416, 375, possibly couple others starting with a 4 was much much better then .50
Yep, Cheers Man
well spoken
Thanks Man
50BMG🤩👍‼️
👍👍😎
Agree totally with every thing you said regarding ball ammo. Is a big bullet, nothing magical about it at all. Though would add that military ammo includes ammo piercing and incendiary. Mainly for vehicle mounted machine guns, but has been used by marksmen/sniper for hitting light skinned vehicles and structures out to 1500m. Dependant on vehicles armour the projectile can penetrate 10 - 20mm steel at 1000m. Not comfortable for the firer and reduces barrel life. Also impossible to remain concealed when firing so sniping with .50 really means long range shooting from within a secure defensive position.
Thanks Dave, Cheers man
👍😊
Cheers
So if the higher calibres can 'move' the barrel with the energy as they leave the chamber can some shorter barrel lengths, say 20 inch, have an accuracy advantage over a 24 or 26 in barrel in, say .308?
Lots of details, so not comment answer thing, but we have videos on all this, Cheers
👍
👍👍
Hi Guys.
I’m sure it’s been asked and answered before: but I cannot find the answer.
What ballistics app do you use?
Strelok Pro
@@markandsamafterwork thank you
All I can say is. The big 50 could really shred some Taliban.
Yeh, even on the skip after hit the ground, sure not something to be down range from, Cheers
Yes tell them they are not that accurate right? 😅
The only 50 BMG rounds I know that will punch straight through are 50 BMG black tip or 50 BMG ralphus or 50 BMG slap so if you really want to ruin someone's engine block you pick one of these three 50 BMG ball might penetrate after 100 or so but you wouldn't do it with a rifle you would do it with a machine gun
Cheers Man, thanks
cant own one in Canada ... not that I could ever afford one anyway
Lol, Cheers Brian, thanks
You mean I can't shoot the moon with a 50bmg?
Lol, Cheers
How do you think it got all those creators 😆
need a Needsmoore and it will hit the space cricket right in the arse
It would definitely push the moon off axis so don't even try.
408 Cheytec or 375 Cheytec better choices for accuracy. IMHO.
Cheers
LOLS 50 bmg , Not even close to being the best ELR round. My three 25lb Rifles in 50 FCSA (Fisher) , 50 Fisher Long and 510 DTC... The best groups I Ever shot were around 10 inches at 1000. the FCSA being the most consistent with a 800 grain Bore rider. You can do allot better in bench rifles in the 50 to 100 lb class as seen at 50 FCSA 1000 yd benchrest matches.. But in a 25 lb rig, Id be choosing a 375 Chey/Snipe/warlord etc. Allot friendlier on the shoulder
Agreed, Cheers Man, thanks
Not the most accurate "by a long shot" 😂
Yep, lol, Cheers
No but it's close
Lol, cheers
a heavy rifle, more expensive to shoot and everyone thought if you dont have it you couldnt shoot long range accurately, it may be still a good anti personel and light vehicle weapon but it got to much hype in that many thought ELR you had no other options thinking the b.c. and velocity nothing compares with it but many as your self have shown the 50 cal isnt the best and can suffer accuracy at long range, energy is fine but accuracy is final and matters even with combat kill zone simulation
Thanks Libra, Cheers
You are really talking about the accuracy of the shooter ability, not the round. Once the bullet it launched it will follow the same physics of any other calibre. Efficiency is dependent on bullet shape and powder characteristics. Penetration is dependent on velocity and bullet construction. The Hornady Amax vaporises on steel. Been shooting 50 BMG for 20 years. Disturbed by all this controversial attention threatening my sporting interests.
Well about platform and recoil v human, otherwise yes, as said, Cheers Boris
Would Love to get another one someday as I had an AR-50 years ago. Just need to scrape up enough money for it
Awesome, Cheers
I've owned my McBros 50 since 2001, and your video puts a lot of myths to bed. Still, I've never seen someone shoot it, and not have a big grin on their face. Like you said, many other rounds are much more efficient to get the same job done with a lighter kit.
Thanks man, Cheers
Shame the media don't let facts get in the way a good story.
Agreed, lol, cheers
