This song was conceived in a hotel room in Ft Lauderdale. Someone had given Santana a tape recorded live in Cuba, of Pello el afrokan. He played it back in front of us (Hector Márquez (Tetera,) “Futi Ángulo” and myself. He asked his bass player to make a riff and asked Chapito to follow with his sticks on top of the hotel room’s dresser, Hector played a cong riff on the night table abs Carlos grabbed his guitar. The rest is history and this is part of that history. Circa 1973-74
I was alone at home one night, some 40 years ago. It had started to snow outside and our garden was already covered in an ankle-high layer of magic. I put Maria Caracoles on the record player and positioned the speakers in the window. At approximately midnight I went into the garden, turned the volume up to "insane" and danced myself stupid. Thanks, Santana!
As kids in the San Francisco Bay Area we grew up listening to all types of music. Santana, Malo and TOP were just a few of the groups. This mash up has former members of all of them. We thought the music we listened to was normal. I know now they were masterpieces!
In the past 45 years, I've seen both of these great bands at various times and venues. This is a first for me for sure. TOP horn section with Santana's drum and rhythm section is way too cool. These guys are true musicians.
so happy to have stumbled on this. Chepito remains the greatest storyteller ever on timbales AND congas, and how freakin smooth are those timbal rolls?
Santana...Y un gran Orgullo Nicaraguense...♥️ Chepito Areas en los timbales. Amazing!! 🎶💃 No habra Otro. Mil gracias por compartir este video. Desde San Francisco, California.
I remember seeing this on TV back in the day. I was glued to the set.. They'd cut to an interview with Carlos between songs. I wish I could see the entire show. Oh well. Carlos was talking about all the "gimmicks" that bands used at that time, "without giving one iota" for the feel of the music. Great album. Underestimated.
It can't get better than this. Santana and the Tower of Power in one video. And Jose Chepito Ares and Raul Rekow starring as percussionists. I've been a fan of those guys for ages. Thanks for uploading this video. I enjoyed it immensly.
And the best add to that rhythm section was the legendary Armando Peraza who brought a wonderful swing to that group. He also influenced the Afro-Cuban sound responsible for Shango and was a great influence on Carlos
What a great song. I saw Santana 8 days later February 10, 1977 in concert at the Sam Houston Coliseum Houston, Texas with same line up. And yes they played Maria Caracoles. I took a very close up picture of Carlos with his samba whistle hanging around his neck. Nothing but good memories. Thank you for uploading this video.
Have mercy this is hot! Carlos shredding as he does so well. The classic TOP horns lineup. The most insane percussion I think I have ever heard! Who is that killing those timbales? This is great.
Great memories. I still have this album Festival on vinyl. Carlos tearing it up on his Yamaha SG2000, Greg Walker vocal, Pablo on bass & vocals, Tom Coster on keys, Graham Lear on drums, one of the greatest percussion duos in history with Jose "Chepito" Areas on Timbales (nobody better, NOBODY!) & a super young Raul Rekow on congas, & that great Tower of Power horn section. Carlos also used them way back on the " Abraxas" album. Carlos' next great keyboard player Chester Thompson who he played with for so many years was also from Tower of Power. So they have a long history. Carlos always has had the finest musicians playing for him. Thanks for posting this, I still listen to this cut often but haven't seen the video in so long, a ripping merengue Santana Style. I have every album he's ever done & a hero & major influence on my guitar playing since 1970. One of the greatest & purest artists we're still lucky enough to enjoy. Again thanx..
Mozambique is the name of the Afro-Cuban rhythm they're playing. If you want to hear the original, which really features the mozambique rhythm, do a search on Pello El Afrokan, the composer of this tune and the inventor of Mozambique from Cuba.
Great music. I love it. I have a question for the band. Where can I purchase conga drums like the ones on this video. Thank you for your time. Gilcortez from America 🇺🇸
Personally, I'd go further - the best timbalero of all time. The transitions in takeoffs and solos are better than anyone I've ever heard. I'd put his conga soloing in there as well.
frommthe incredible album Festival, the group re-focused by Carlos' astral avatar - Sr Leon Patillo, And were there only one tune to describe his perfect fit in thei group that tune is One With The Sun from Borboletta. nowhere is the les Paul guitar better amped echoed or recorded - never - not as its found on this record. And MS pulls east Bay drum stroke to fine effect; Patillo is an exceptional Rhodes piano player; he's the one who puts new voicings in samba pa ti, others; Coster & him click
And although Gaylord Birch was the drummer on the album Festival, by this time Santana's new drummer was the great Graham Lear (often mistaken for Michael Schrieve as they used to look very much alike back then).
Love it ! Not one shot of the drummer who keeps the whole piece going! Oh a slight view of the bass drum! plenty of the guy with maracas , percussionist, bass player, Who was the Drummer? ah hell...he doesn't matter...Typical ignorance of what we contribute to the music.... oh sorry at the very end a long shot...the drummer played his ass off and no one ever acknowledged this man's effort to the music. They never dance to the 'e min chord ' they dance to the drummer! who was never shown !! Thanks for ignorance....

The best Latin rock music that ever played in this planet
This was on PBS and was the 1st time I ever saw him play.
"Festival" is such an underrated album. Such great stuff. Vintage Santana!
Indeed. Various styles of music,Santana so versatile. Carlos` best guitar sound around this period.

Pablo Tellez..former Malo on lead vocals...incredible. Great pipes Paul.
This takes me back to Highschool days, such great music. Carlos plays from the heart, that's why people love him.
This is a level of musicianship that every band should aspire to.
Have a listen to Mandrill X

Tower of Power opened at a lot of Santana gigs in that era.
