For a boat that stores in such a small way thats ideal to have in case of emergency's if nothing else. not much use for me i am very much a feet on dry land type of person but i do enjoy a nice bit of kit like that. lovely green sea by the way Chris.
Thank you! The sea changes colour quite often where our boat is: in the summer the vis deteriorates and it goes greener, whereas in the winter it gets much clearer. Out at sea (outside the water inside the bay) it's always a lovely blue colour. Cheers, Chris 👍
Hey Chris Finally exploring our Ozzie water world and we bumped into a boatie with one of those porta bote folding dinghies. We have an old Gemini Rib which we did a lot of repairs on. It’s a fine dinghy, but Linda and I are binge watching so many sailing videos with boats similar to our 35’ mono. Anyway, Linda is pretty keen on a hydrovane or similar for autohelm in reasonable winds. But with a dinghy on davits that just wouldn’t work. So, thinking about maybe making a flip tail 9 which should be ok for our gear us and a small outboard. Are you still using yours?
@@vandouglas5431 It's done just tested it today. First time building anything like this. Has a couple of small leaks so i might need to reseal some parts also made a couple of mistakes but turned out quite well. I'll be uploading a video of it this sunday on 'Land rats on a bartered Sailboat' channel.
Hi Chris, Great tip. Thanks for that. I bought the instructions already. 👍 It looks like you used pine, right? I'm interested in the extra lines you added. Were them for lifting it with a halyard? Fair winds....
Hi Carlos, you're correct I did use pine timber for the laminated sections and I added small stainless padeyes on the inside of the stem & transom so that the boat could be launched & retrieved from a boat solo using a halyard. The loops you see in the line were in the correct place to have the boat balanced while it was being hoisted on the halyard. We have some more videos of this tender on our other RUclips channel RUclips.com/sailingbritaly including a video showing how I made our cheap DIY sailing rig for it. Good luck with the build: you will love it! Cheers, Chris 👍
Rough seas, pretty good - it is a very stable platform. Beaching, piece of cake, there is a sacrificial wooden keel strip which takes any wear and is can be easily replaced in future years should that become necessary, and the boat is so light that one person can carry it up a beach. Getting into it from the water is another matter, that would be a real challenge and you would need a weight in the boat (Jerry can full of water for example) to have any chance of this. It's designed for getting ashore and back again, and it does that extremely well. If you want to go Scuba diving or something then this isn't the right boat for that. Cheers, Chris
Hi Ben, it’s a brilliant project, I learnt loads and absolutely loved going out on the water on a boat I built with my own hands. I think the rowing version cost somewhere around £250, I made the sailing rig myself, so that was quite cheap (if you’re interested in this I have a video about it on my other channel, Sailing Britaly). I’d say go for it! Chris 👍
@@christopher_barr thanks Chris, I will! I was disappointed to see they’ve stopped hiring out rowing boats at my local river so I’m looking forward to having one of my own! Now I’m just trying to decide between the Origami or the Fliptail!
Cheers, Chris 👍
I believe most boat building plans can be scaled up by around 10% without too much trouble, but that's quite a bit bigger. Benjy is the man to ask, the link takes you to his website and he's a very helpful guy.
Actually, i am just about to buy the plans. Wanted to ask you first, why not the fliptail to chose... than I was thinking-and-thinking and found several reasons why you made the right choice..:)
Hi Tibor! It's nice to see you on this channel too. :-) I'm sure the Fliptail is a fantastic boat, but we were very happy with the Origami. If you do build one of these and you've never built a boat before, prepare yourself because you will find it unbelievably satisfying! The smell of the wood as you plane it, and the feeling when you get in it in the water for the first time, are unforgettable! Cheers, Chris 👍
@@christopher_barr Thanx! I actually promised my father-in-low to build a larger-lighter-cheaper dinghy than what he has now a year ago... so it is time to build it. :) Have a nice day!
You'll love the build and your father-in-law will love the tender! The plans are fantastic, so you'll probably be all set, but if you have any questions send me a message over on Patreon and I'll help you out in whatever way I can. 👍
Very nice Chris. Thanks for sharing. Am looking for a tender for my 25 footer. Aprox how many hours for the build ? What do you think are the advantages / disadvantages over an inflatable ?
Hi there, sorry for the delayed reply! IT took me about a week to build the boat, but it depends how fussy you are and how much time you want to spend varnishing. Painting is probably a lot quicker. Advantages over inflatable: Rows MUCH better, planes more easily with a small outboard, stows away for passage in about 2 minutes, TONS of internal space (Equivalent to an 11 foot inflatable), can be sailed. Big enough to sleep in if you fancy an adventurous camping dinghy trip. Less likely to be stolen as these aren't exactly mass-produced items! Disadvantages, could sink (Just carry a fender or two as seats and this is resolved), attracts attention (I don't mind that, but some might. In Portofino there were loads of people taking pictures of this dinghy, rather than the mega-yachts right beside it!), more difficult to get into from the water. Not as simple to tow behind boat (you don't really need to when it folds down so small though). I loved this little boat and I would build another one tomorrow if I had the time. Fair winds! Chris 👍
The plans are €40 randomchris.com/boatplans and the materials for the boat were around £250. The Skin material is PVC as sold by people who make marquees or lorry curtain sides. The plans give lots of options for all the materials required and list suppliers in different countries. Cheers, Chris 👍

How well does/did the tender handle not so calm seas and beaching? And how was getting in to it from the water ?

Hello from Italy! How much does it weight? I don't have a car, but I'm 5 minutes from the sea walking, is it heavy?
