  • Zippers! At my first Assistant Designer job, I was put in charge of ordering zippers because I was the only one in the office who could wade through all the terms and codes. It was definitely a point of pride for me at that job! In this video, I go over all the terms you need to know to order zippers for your production or pick out a nice zipper for your project at home!

    Hi Zoe! I would love to see a zipper sewing tutorial. I sew casually at home for myself and I am so happy I found your channel. There's a lot I've learned and apply and there's also information that I won't use but I watch all of it because it's great. I think your an excellent teacher! I love this! I work a leather and sewing shop and I've learned so much about zippers and how to shorten and fix them. This is something that should be taught 'cause so many designers coming in just asking for a zipper and I ask them to specify and they don't know what they want or that there are so many options

    There also exist invisible separating zippers. I also remove plastic tractor zipper teeth, it is possible. I think when it comes to invisible zippers in general, it is also important to choose the zipper that has a tape compatible with the fabric of the garment. The on in the video has has a twill tape but there also exist invisible zippers with a knitted tape which appears kinda meshy and is softer than the twill one and therefore, more suitable for lighter, softer or knitted materials.
    Thanks for another great video!

    I was in Dover street market once and I tried on this Givenchy jacket, and the zips were so smooth and felt high quality, I've never felt a zipper this good! Most zipped jackets / hoodies never feel smooth, they don't zip up and down well like you need to put a WD40 equivalent to make them feel smooth again, even YKK zips the feel light and cheap. I love to know the names of some high end / heavy duty, reflective shiny metal / silver chrome zipped hoodies to save search time. great video as well 🙏

    Yes to a sewing zippers tutorial! Also, tip from your trade team on jackets! Use #5 or higher if you’re aiming for outerwear tariff rate (lower than a “cardigan type”!). Also, if you put a zipper on a suit-type jacket, Customs says it’s no longer a suit-type jacket. Thank you Zoe!!! xoxo

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  6 лет назад +1

      I love when you geek out on my channel, but GIRL, screw customs, if there's a zipper on a suit-type jacket, *I* won't let you call it a suit jacket. Subtle horn 4-hole buttons only, with matching style button of a smaller size along the sleeve plackets, tyvm. I will allow shank buttons for sports coats only--never for blazers or suit jackets.

    • @MegamiTenchi
      @MegamiTenchi 6 лет назад

      Zoe Hong, haha, as a fashion lover, I agree on all points!! But why did you have to put the image of shank buttons on anything but a denim jacket in my head. My soul weeps!! (Shank buttons are so not a heavy duty closure)

    is just wetting the fabric and ironing when it's dry enough or it is necessary to actually wash the fabrics with soap?

    I love the look of invisible zips and find them easy to install, however I find them difficult to zip at waist lines etc where four seems come together. So unless the fabric is very lightweight I just go with a coiled zip.

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  3 года назад +1

      I don't know what you mean about zippers hooking. For smooth zips, it's not about the material but about the production quality. Premium brands like YKK make sure the individual metal teeth are smooth so the zips don't get stuck as you pull them open and closed, etc.

When I contact them they're kinda dodgy with the question.. and say "yes the zipper". I'm not sure since they're European.. either they are dodging or bad English. Pls help.
