I just purchased this last week. Amazon had a coupon so it cost me $144. At that price it was a no brainer for me. Even if it doesn’t work out, I see it as a minimal investment.
There is no round magnetic ND 16 and 32 in this system, which indicates that the solution is not completely professional. In addition, inserting filters into the compartment from above, as in tilta mirage, can be faster and more convenient, and a second filter compartment can also be retrofitted. The only thing that is not thought out in tilt is the impossibility when it needs to be made from a VND, a polarizing filter, simply by removing one of the polarizing ones, as is done in this matte Smallrig box.
Question is how good the ND filter is ... for $179 I kinda doubt is good. I wonder how it impacts the CCT and what is the color cast ... Also 2-5 stops won't work for SLOG3 (and most LOG profiles) ....
@@flake-films Native ISO in SLOG3 is 800. So 5 stops are usually not enough outside or with window in the shot. Where I live 7 stops is what I used outside, but Texas and Arizona people claim they need up to 9 stops for SLOG3.
Oh the website they also sell 5-9 stops for this mattebox as well but i didn’t notice a ton of CCT shifts. It probably is as good as most other filters in the $100 price point though imo
Shame it only has 1 slot for 4x5 filters. I've been using 4x5 filters instead of variable ND's because all the variables I've used have been a bit unreliable with colour casting and cross banding. I find a good ND8 & ND64 bit of glass the way to go. Be interested to know how good the variable ND is on this?
Actually I haven’t had any crazy color shift and zero X panning on this. For me this is the nearly perfect mattebox! I wish it was a 67-95 even though my max filter size is 82
@@Milan-cf1xe Tiffin, K&F, Urh and some cheaper ones. I just found them to be a problem when you're stopping down at the top end of variable. K&F are pretty decent out of all of them. When stopping down to 5 or 10 stops, that's usually where the colour shift & x banding was most prominent. I've since bought some Nisi 4x5 & also the K&F 4x5 glass which is pretty decent. Means I don't have to have a ton of VND's for each lens too. Just slot into the matte box, use step up rings on the lenses and I'm good to go. Just found better results going down the glass route. This matte box looks a good solution if you want to use VND.

can i use it on a 52 mm diameter lense with a step up ring?
Thank you for sharing this excellent video with us! I just wanted to ask if the kit comes with a VND filter included in it.
Depends which kit you get, but yes there is a kit with the VND included
@@MatthewDangyou Thank you, so, it's the 4411 item, the one you featured in this video, correct?
@ErikOlsen there should be a link to the specific one in the bio :)

Yeah I’m kinda thinking the same thing with the glass.
What do you mean about 2-5 stops not working with SLOG3?

@@JoATTech thanks for that explanation!
Yeah super good point.

Thanks for review, does it have vigneting with wide lens (16mm for exemple) ? Thanks
Is there a way to mount it on lenses with smaller than 67mm diameter, like some 58mm Lumix MFT lenses? Perhaps with a step-up ring?
Yeah with a step up ring would work
I have question, Do you need to remove the UV filter to be able to clamp it or you can leave the UV filter on while using this Mattebox?
You can leave it on

Which Vario NDs did you test and which were the best/worst?

@@MatthewDangyou Yeah, having that 95mm would be great for cine lenses. good to know that VND is good too!
180 quid for this POS 😂😂😂 .....nah
ND-filer yes. Matte box? Not really.
Yeah if you don’t use 4x5 filters you don’t really need a mattebox unless you want to get rid of flares but the vnd is so nice!
This looks like a total hassle to swap lenses with
