engineer here. open gate, 30fps h.265, waveforms, shutter angle, independent sliders for bitrate/resolution/crop ratio/framerate, in-camera double stacking LUTS like panny does now, focus transitions, live cropping... THERE'S SO MANY THINGS THAT ARE SIMPLE SOFTWARE FEATURES THAT SONY JUST SAYS "NOPE" TO
Not an engineer but the Lumix cameras are spec cameras good on paper only. Feature always comes with compromise. No Lumix footage holds up to Sony or Canon's best cameras. Look it up. Lumix sales are also way behind Sony and Canon. Sony and Canon are always chasing RED's image quality and Lumix is way behind. The only thing Lumix users defend are the specs, it's never showcasing the image they produce.
21:34 agree! physically locking the sensor and still having ibis would be awesome. Lumix is already great but here some more things I wish to see in the S1H/BS1H successor: - no more crop in 60/50 fps (or have both option) - no more HDMI lag - better rolling shutter performance (I notice it the most in 50 fps anamorphic) - or Gyro Data for handling rolling shutter in post - better 100/120 fps quality - Braw internal :) - Arri Log-C 3 like in the GH7 - SDI output This would be my perfect camera. If they can do half of it I‘m in :). I don‘t need: 8K
Woohoo! Great work again Matthew. I've been following Jason for a while now since I also shoot on both Sony and Lumix, and am glad that he's choosing the right tools depending on the job. Lesson is to stay aware and chose what works best for you at the time, whether it's an iPhone or an Alexa.
What I would like to see on the Lumix, is open gate or 3:2 selection in all the different resolution/frame rates. So you can get 1080p, 60, 120, framerates, etc.
I bought one of the last GH4 at BH for $600 few years ago as my third camera with my bmpcc4k. Quality was so good on that 2014 camera that as soon as the GH6 came out I bought 2. I’m crazy to get the new GH7. Anyway I have an r5 and I don’t used for video. Panasonic has something that make me enjoy my work more.
I sold me a7sIII for mk I S5 with ninja V. The prores RAW from is in my mind best what you can get from any mirrorless cameras today. The higihlight roll off is magical and the colors.. dang..
Well?...I do own both. GH6 - GH7 - S5IIX - FX6 - A7SIII and FX30. I use both Sony and Lumix but yes,..I absolutely do enjoy Lumix the most. Nothing wrong with Sony, I just like how aggressive Lumix is.
Amazing podcast like always, and love the direction you’re taking see you with Jason made me think that it would be super cool to see an episode with Terry Worfield, which he is a Sony shooter too, but got in to lumix too through the S9. So it would be a really cool one to have and here his prospective too
@ Don’t be sorry. Again, for portrait professional work, Z8 excels LUMIX, but video profesional work LUMIX does better than Nikon. Both are amazing tools ⚒️
I agree, and this part about Lumix bugs me. I need two systems to get different jobs done. Lumix for video hands down. Lumix for photo to a point. For wildlife I can get excellent results with G9ii *in good light. Low light, wildlife - neither L mount or MFT excels.
I'm Looking to purchase A full frame camera but a different brand I'm coming from Canon 80D I need help deciding I want to shoot Portraits and street photography
I do accept photos straight out of Lumix at a higher rate than most other brands, now I would like to see some higher resolution Lumix models in the Full Frame lineup, maybe an 52mp S5R probably.
A $2000 S5ii and S5iix are killing the game! I still run with a S1 and Black Magic Video Assist and it’s still amazing! Once I add more plus 400 to the temperature and it looks deadly close to my Black Magic Cinema 6k. One camera with and one without, I think I’m good with my 2 6k open gate cameras.
My goal is to upgrade to the LINUX GH7. I’ve used my G9 for so many projects and I just can’t see myself switching to another brand! The menus are so user friendly too. LUMIX for life! 📷
Was a sony a6400 user , planned to uograde to FX30 but then i starter my research and found that Lumix got some bangers for the bucks . The features are insane . I picked up a lumix s9 as i mainly am a video person and almost save 1000$
As someone who has primarily been a Lumix video shooter since the 2010s, I'd be hesitant to switch based on the native lens options and features Sony provides. My preference for the Lumix "look" is what has kept me from switching since the GH2.
I have an original S5. Takes glorious 1080P and that's all I need so I won't be needing to upgrade. I just hope the S5 III finally has 4K 120 / 1080P 300 with no crop and autofocus. The colors are beautiful but they're really behind on everything else.
I’ve had a chance to play with a buddy’s lumix s5iix and the image that comes out of it is way better straight out of cam with a conversion lut smashed on it.
Luckily you've got a LUMIX presence in Australia. Here in South Africa they are basically non existent. When the s5 was realised I had to order it on Amazon which is fine but I wouldn't even know where to send it for a service
Here I am with a GH5S and a GH6 and wanted the GH7 (mainly for auto focus/no streaking) but lately have been considering going into Sony as thats what everybody is using and I always see tag alongs or jobs asking people to have Sony lol...
I’m a canon shooter planning to go to Sony. I love the lumix cameras but I feel like I need an ecosystem I can grow into. The lumix cinema line doesn’t have many options
Fair! The nice part about the L Mount alliance (food for thought) is you can switch to Black Magic Cinema cameras which are insane, DJI chicken 4D which is super powerful, Lecia, and Sigma cameras in the future which I would say could be consider more “future proof”
For filmmaking and video work S5II/X and even G9II are amazing. For wildlife photography, G9II has the reach and amazing super slow motion but starts to fall apart in low light. Unfortunately L-Mount is severely lacking in super telephoto as well as fast pre-burst and there's no slow motion at either 4K120 nor HD240p or 300p . The "I have to pick and choose" live view composite is S5II/G9II but not S9 & Hybrid zoom is on S9 but no others and so on is getting old. Panasonic needs a pro camera for wildlife in L-mount with PDAF and high MP for cropping down. Then L mount tops out at 600mm sigma ...no first party . The competition is pulling ahead.
The competition is pulling ahead with features like auto subject recognition, auto track people & pre-capture/pre-burst as well as 8K60 and basics like 4K120 and HD240 with autofocus where Panasonic looses detection mode at 120p on G9II. Firmware is not infallible either, had a bricked S9.
Ah my bad, that got fixed on the GH7 I believe but I never really had autofocus problems at 4k 120 but I only use it very selective shots because to much slow mo isn’t the greatest imo
Nope- i will never EVER leave my Sony fx3 for anything be that Canon, Lumix, BlackMagic, FX3 is my baby and as soon as FX4 comes out ill be on it…peace!
I worked with the s5, s1 and the s5iix, I tested Sony for the first time in 5 years with the sony zv-e1, and I can say that I really prefer the zv-e1 without hesitation. Why? First the main thing, the result of the videos will be the same after color grading, whether it's sony or lumix... but the difference was played on details in the field, first with the AF, wow at sony, it's another world, especially when you work alone on weddings, corporate, or with small teams for video clips etc... having 4k60 without crop is also a relief, a much better rolling shutter, no moiré problem…
love the fact that on all lumix channels no-one talks about the issue with the sound on the s5iix .... that sound destroys footage ... plus no-one talks about the hdmi lag that makes the mounting of a monitor unworkable.... but i like you all find the camera amazing and with no issues .... thats the way lumix will fix those issues....or maybe point out sony issues ...like we care
Tbh I have mentioned this lots of lumix people mentioned this. If you are recording RAW for sure this is a HUGE issue, but as a commercial filmmaker and recording sound separately from it. I turn the sound off and there is zero lag
@@MatthewDangyouRight !!! I’m still blown away LUMIX hate finds its way into the comments. still fact remains, no serious wildlife lenses for L Mount.
The only catch to me with the Lumix is the moire. It happened twice to me already.
Could it be solved using filters? Mist or diffusion filters
It is only an S5ii/X issue as far as I know, and I'd imagine they'll avoid it in the future.
This is exactly what I am worried about as well! Does diffusion filters prevent moire - especially in nature?
