GH7 faster rolling shutter than the S5ii, 60p no crop, it's noisier but when shooting in v-log the noise becomes more like grain witch I love because I'm aiming for that movie film look anyways. Not interested in ARRI Log though. I manly use Kodak and Fuji film looks burned into the GH7. I just started to use black mist diffusion filters with the GH7 and the results are just outstanding. It looks much less digital now :) thanks for the video, cheers!
The way the GH7 is overlooked is almost criminal. This camera offers everything you could ask for, yet people still hype up the FX30 over it. Honestly, I’d choose the GH7 over the FX3 or even the C80 any day. Sure, some might argue that Arri Log C in the GH7 is just a gimmick, but imagine if Sony included Arri Log C in the FX6-we’d never hear the end of it. Lumix really delivered with this camera, but because it’s MFT, it’s not taken seriously. As someone new to filmmaking, I’ve always been curious about the obsession with bigger sensors and why full frame is seen as the ultimate standard-especially when medium format exists. Isn’t it worth questioning the narrative? Thanks for the video
I agree, Panasonic is underrated compared to many other brands like Sony & Canon. I want to enter a photo contest to win a new camera, but there's never Panasonic as an option. so if I'm ever successful and win one, will most likely sell for a Lumix! They offer great feature set for less.
At present, the GH7 definitely is a step up on the full frame units for features but as per usual, different applications. I believe the 4k 120 with no crop was missed in your discussion, the S5 II will only do the 4k 60 mode with a crop so some of the full frame advantage disappears. I feel like the keys to decide between the systems hinges on depth of field. If you want AF and you want to shoot with the majority of the shot in focus plus adding all the video modes including 120p (think talking head, landscape focused photo/video, wildlife and so on) then m43 is a clear winner. If you're looking to get the optimum low light (sports/action, concert/wedding/event, portrait stills) then so long as you don't need 4k 120, definitely go FF. The fact that shows like Peta Pixel use almost exclusively a GH7 for their show says without a doubt that it is high quality enough to provide professional results. Full frame will simply cost more regardless, have bigger glass regardless and have low light and shallow depth of field advantages. Most of those can be overcome with glass on m43. My personal setup has 2 x EM1 mk II cameras with modded firmware for unlimited recording as A and B cameras and a G7 as a C camera in service mode which also gives unlimited recording. For about $1300 I have 3 camera bodies that do great and leaves lots left for glass and lighting etc. If you can use just a single camera, great, go FF. If you want a studio setup on a budget, it's hard to compete with m43 especially when you control the lighting.
I love your videos its like watching keanu reeves talking about cameras, personnaly i got the S9 i manly use it for pro works like interviews, corporate videos for social medias, weddings... but also use it for fun its a great camera
I was dead set on the GH7 until you mentioned the noise in your images. Is it also noisy in your video with the GH7? I want the cleanest picture possible. I'm upgrading from a G85, which is a M43 camera that has been great for me, however I do see noise in my images.
S5II is noticeably cleaner. 25MP on full frame surface area vs 25MP on micro43. I wonder if the GH7 sacrificed the resolution and was only 12MP if the noise would be equivalent. I think so…
@@_tographerNo noise reduction with braw. But it cleans up a lot better than noisy 'in-cam noise ruduced' shots. How is the gh7 noise quality compared to s5ii?
@Giovanni-Giorgio I have the GH7, and the noise in V-Log is similar to 65mm film grain. Of course, you can add NR in camera (preferably done in post) if you want that sharp clean Sony look 😊
Huge upgrade in dynamic range compared to the G85. The GH7 matches up with full frame cameras nicely if you hit the files with a light denoise to remove the small film grain.
You brought up moire challenges on the Lumix cameras because of the lack of a low pass filter. Do you have any idea if the Sony full frame cameras have a low pass filter? Moire ruins shots and I really see it on my GX85 in 4k vs the G7 which is less pronounced. Also one big turnoff I have with the Lumix FF cameras is the crop at 60fps and above. So you just lost a big part of sensor that you paid for at 60fps.
I’m not sure on the Sony front, it hasn’t been a huge issue for me on the S5II but it’d be dishonest if I didn’t mention it. It’s really going to vary from shoot to shoot, lens to lens, and if you’re using any kind of filters so I think it’s one of those things you have to test yourself.
The S5 II is relatively cheap on the used market, something like 350 dollars less than new. It'll be interesting to see what the price is if the S5 3 ever gets announced. I consider mechanical shutter somewhat important, at least for my priorities. But I'm not entirely sure why stills cameras are always somewhat hampered down versions of cine cameras. For example, internal RAW should be a priority without needing an external monitor or other accessory. Does it need to do with price? I'm no expert, but from the cameras that I've used, there's no 100 percent true digital zoom. For example, while you can pick a digital zoom setting in a Lumix G95, you don't have a dial for that, and there seems to be no option to digitally zoom in/out using finger in touchscreen mode, akin to what you can do using a phone and tablet.
The funny thing is that the s5 is not a full frame camera at all if you shoot in 4k50 which i always do as i need slowmo in my shots. Thats why i bought gh7, its a mich much better videocamera and i shoot in 5.7 k 50 which s5 does not have all the time. S5 is a photo camera to me.
Mft has some texture if you really pixel peep but it looks very filmic and i like it a lot. In my opinion mft can achieve a filmic look much more easy than a super clean foto looking full frame image gives.
Lumix knows how to make good cameras but they usually make poor marketing decisions and/or design choices to prevent them from standing out against the bigger brands, granted it's a small department with limited resources. S9: removed mechanical shutter and internal flash (could've given us a photo version of this camera and/or an updated GX9), no integrated or detachable EVF S5ii: Only flip-out screen, no dedicated video/photo mode switch, not compatible with the XLR adapter, no camcorder style body using the same sensor GH7: stagnant lens selection, sub-par compatibility with EF lenses using speedbooster, no dedicated video/photo mode switch, no XLR top handle, no camcorder style body using the same sensor
dont use Lumix, from somebody that used Canon 10 Years, came from the R5C to the S5iix and another S5ii. now im with Sony. I really recommend it to everyone that plans on working in professional field. Lumix just taunts but never delievers real professional camera. you will not receive in near future, maybe never. Just go Sony, thank me later.
Not everyone is going to need to move up to a FX, Burano etc level camera. Not everyone is hiring into teams who are entrenched in the Sony ecosystem. The vast majority of people buying mirrorless cams are going to be at that level of equipment forever, and that's fine. Even workaday videographers are often perfectly fine with a mirrorless setup if it has an XLR option, which Lumix has had longer than anyone.
Lol, you wrote a lot of words without saying anything... Sony is amazing but Lumix is all about value. Lumix cameras pretty much deliver everything Sony delivers (with the exception of 4k 120 and a couple of other features) at a much lower entry cost. At the end of the day...use what you want, lol.
Lumix taunts? I'm following what Lumix has to say and taunting isn't their style. The S1H was a very professional camera when it came out (and still is) and now, a few years lauter, we wait for the next round of much improves S1 cameras. The GH7 is a very professional camera. For a number of run and gun use cases it's probably the best available camera. Stabilization is the best on the market and Open Gate, over sampled 4k120p and 5.7k60p is also something you can't find in a lot of cameras. Sony has a lot of great cameras but also a lot of missing features. Stabilization isn't on paar with Lumix and probably never will be in FF cameras with this small mount.

I share similar thoughts. Unfortunate that so many miss out on what could be the best choice for them.
