nice review , but the whole way through I just wanted to Rake out the front end of your HD evo ..very distracting. As someone with a load of 4x4 filters on tilta , the Smallrig beats out the Mirage and polar options for the 4x4 re-useability while delivering 99% of the functionality of my bigger matte boxes..Detachable side flags would be nice though. The rod attachment is great for me running budget heavy anamorphic lens,I'm always wanting to keep weight off the front end and my dinky little L mount S1H .
I love my polar pro matte box, but this one solves all my issues I had with it. The best part about competition is it makes these brands continue to innovate
Only thing I want improved is the smoothness of adjusting the variable ND (looks like it can get stuck and be pretty hard to adjust), and making the whole tray thin enough to just pop in and out without taking the entire front part off everytime
Have you seen the NISI C5, seems to be a better option than the small rig since Nisi are known for better filters and you can also use 4x5 filters at the same time un like on the small rig? Are you still happy with this product or have any updates since using it for a while now? Thanks
Nice. I just got the H&Y RevoRing for my R5c after all sorts of tries with other NDs and I'm really happy. It works. Still nothing better than the C70 internals. How's Austin brah?
Nice video ! Are you having issue with wider lenses, let’s say from 15 to 35mm with that X patern ! I’ve seen the Tilta mattebox do some pretty intense X patern but the smallrig seems to be legit ?! Thanks
Oh man I’m not sure, I made this video a while back. KondorBlue has a new matte box, I’ve been rocking the prototype and it’s pretty much my go to now. Now sure on pricing yet tho
Any issues with the vnd gear wheel that changes the nd strength? I want to pull the trigger but a lot of users say that it's really hard to use the vnd gear.
Thanks for the Detailed review! I hesitated between this model to the mini 9f smallrig. I use a7s3 and small lens of samiang. It's a small gear. What is your recommendation for me? To buy the big or the small? Thank you 💕!
would this matte box system be able to hold 3 filter trays at once? I'd wanna use an ND, diffusion and polariser all at once and am worried about the weight distribution
Every VND has color cast. No matter what the brands say. Some favor the bluish magenta side, some favor the yellow greenish side. None of them are perfect. It’s just the science behind the filters. Literally impossible to get perfect color. Hell even lenses have color cast. But that’s why we have 10+ bit color profiles and WB.
I never tried the Tilta one actually. And every VND will have a color cast no matter what the marketing says. I honestly didn’t test for cooor cast tho, totally forgot. Forgot because I shit every camera at 5400k and adjust tint in post
seems like its hard to trust to this magnets )) while shooting from car with wind for example, and some other cases... Probably you dont need to switch filters too often, so i dont sure that is worth to do it with magnetic style... its not safe for expensive filters..

Dang, so close. Maybe this year will be the year.
Excellent review quick and to the point thank you👍😎
What if you want to use a Black Mist on top of the ND? Is there like a second tray ? Did I miss something?
Yeah dude your just buy another tray and it extends it if I'm not mistaken
Bro didn’t want to drop polar pro name. Love your stuff bro! Great review.
I love my polar pro matte box, but this one solves all my issues I had with it. The best part about competition is it makes these brands continue to innovate
Which polar pro Matte box did you have? Was it the basecamp? If so do you like the small rig better? I’m choosing between the two
@@ZacBarnesMusic yes the basecamp. I def like the smallrig better for the points I said in the video. Hopefully PolarPro updates theirs at some point
subbed immediately. knowledgable and straight to the point. king shit
It only come with a top shade and not side barn doors?
This was a great explanation, very practical.
What about a wedge to angle the filters to get rid of reflections?
Only thing I want improved is the smoothness of adjusting the variable ND (looks like it can get stuck and be pretty hard to adjust), and making the whole tray thin enough to just pop in and out without taking the entire front part off everytime
It’s smooth for the most part! I threw it in there roughly so it was as smooth from when I got it. I jsut need to place it in better haha
@@cammackey so after 3 months of having this matte box, are you still happy with it? VND is confirmed to be smooth to operate by hand?
Hey man, how does the ND perform with colour shifts? Will the colours stay consistent throughout the stops? Thx

Yea but nisi c5 can’t stack filters right…

For the Smallrig Modular Mattebox, what is the widest FF lens you can use with two filter trays without vignetting?
Oh man I’m not sure, I made this video a while back. KondorBlue has a new matte box, I’ve been rocking the prototype and it’s pretty much my go to now. Now sure on pricing yet tho
Any issues with the vnd gear wheel that changes the nd strength? I want to pull the trigger but a lot of users say that it's really hard to use the vnd gear.
Nice review, it’s hard to find info on this matte box
Thanks for the video, what about vignetting on 15-35mm @15mm?
I haven’t noticed any, but I don’t recall what focal length I was at when I used it
what lens or filter ddo you use for your outdoor shots ?
Thanks for the Detailed review!
I hesitated between this model to the mini 9f smallrig. I use a7s3 and small lens of samiang.
It's a small gear. What is your recommendation for me? To buy the big or the small?
Thank you 💕!
Hello if my lens no has internal focus, my mattebox will move when I change my focus ring?
Hi! What camera and lens filmed you in this video?
Any reason you're not using rail mount for this? Isn't there a risk to damage the lens mount because of the weight of the matte box?
Hi great video, what is the creative lut you are using in this video?
Please please can you tell me what camera your using to film this!?
Well actually great innovation 👌
Im always wondering why does it only have the one barn door at the top.... do you buy the other two separate for left and right?
It’s to block the sun flares
Which V-lock mounting plate are you using for the rig?
would this matte box system be able to hold 3 filter trays at once? I'd wanna use an ND, diffusion and polariser all at once and am worried about the weight distribution
You didn't discuss any sort of color cast situation? Does it not have any sort of color cast?
Every VND has color cast. No matter what the brands say. Some favor the bluish magenta side, some favor the yellow greenish side. None of them are perfect. It’s just the science behind the filters. Literally impossible to get perfect color. Hell even lenses have color cast. But that’s why we have 10+ bit color profiles and WB.
I was wondering this same thing and if an IR cut filter would eliminate that.
Perfect
super helpful video. Cheers sir
Is there any color cast? I take "That matte Box company" was Tilta Mirage
I never tried the Tilta one actually. And every VND will have a color cast no matter what the marketing says. I honestly didn’t test for cooor cast tho, totally forgot. Forgot because I shit every camera at 5400k and adjust tint in post
Love this Gringo 🤠🏍️
Color shift is horrible vs the Eiger from Freewell. I ended up going with Freewell.
Nothing is truly neutral. Even lenses create a tint
@@cammackey the less color correction I have to do, the better. NiSi and Freewell Eiger are only legit options. Glad I went with the Freewell.
You are Burt Reynolds in that thumbnail 🖤
Love it!
They discontinued the trays, just FYI.
Thx for the walkthru!!
excellent!
Welcome back to C70 :)
Lol I don’t have the C70?
seems like its hard to trust to this magnets )) while shooting from car with wind for example, and some other cases... Probably you dont need to switch filters too often, so i dont sure that is worth to do it with magnetic style... its not safe for expensive filters..
still have to close my eyes and look away when buying 100 x 100 of 4mm glass , its crazy expensive....like everything cinema related .
Wish these had side flags
are you mexican
A tiny bit. I’m a mutt.
