  • This time I review the PolarPro Base Camp, PolarPro Recon and the SmallRig Multifunction Matte Boxes. And one of these matte boxes is being returned. Which one should I send back?

    You threw me for a loop. Thought for sure you were taking the Smallrig. Makes sense why you aren’t. All things considered, my Smallrig arrives tomorrow. Thanks for the video.

    the VND on the SmallRig mattebox is surprisingly good for me, i live in a very sunny country, harsh lighting all day all year round, the Polarized part in the VND helped me to reduce contrast when shooting outside alot!

    I’d have a look at Nisi C5 filmmaker kit.

    When will you post an update video on how these worked for you? I'd also love to see a vid on your rigs for each camera!

    I liked how you mentioned how good the smallrig matte box was, but unfortunately you returned it for lens sizing. Smallrig makes the Revo Arcane which fits the VND filter frame they make and goes up to 114 and is still extremely affordable. The main reason I went with smallrig was future proofing my cine rig. I can use ANY size cine filter 4*5.65 or 4*4 and not just limited to polar pros filter selection. Tiffen makes some crazy good cine filters that won't fit the polar pro system

      Can you use almost all brands (Tiffen, polarpro and other) into a small Rig Mattebox? im just curious if theres a good Mattebox which allows a wide arsenal on filters and not only limited to their own filters.

    I think the Tilta mirage would let you mount it directly to the 95mm lens on the 28-135. Might wanna check that out ✌️

      Thanks! Yes, I definitely want to check out the Title Mirage.

      The 28-135 is 110mm though I believe. Tilts Mirage looks great, but same max diameter as the SmallRig.

      @@chrisatkinscanada I have the Mirage, the VND has a really bad color shift, other than that it's great. but I'm looking at the Nisi C5, since the filters are much better. only problem is you can't stack any more than the 2 filters, which is limiting, i often need 3

    Thanks for review. I thought about SmallRig then hesitated. I'm new to this and recently bought a Tilta Mirage, having viewed multiple YT reviews. I think it's OK but I'm wary about having too many Vaxis 95mm filters due to potential vignette problems. I'm planning to also have a few 4x5.65 ND filters too (probably SmallRig as they look excellent quality) so that I don't have to use the VND to extreme settings - minimising any cross pattern etc. Does anyone else have experience of using both fixed large format NDs (4 x 5.65) with a matte box and possibly also CPL or VND filters too?

    and i own old agfa filters ,would love to be able to simply slide these non-standard filters in and attach them. or simply attach tinted glassfilters.

      The Polar Pro matte boxes will not work with other brands, but I think the SmallRig might and I believe Tilta has a matte box that will, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

    Hello, I bought the smallrig VND maytebox along with a whole rig set and I’m trying to use it with different kind of photo lenses ( Canon 85mm, 50mm ) and I keep getting error messages from the lens. Apparently it seems to be heavy for it when the lens is trying to focus. Is there any solution for that?

    • @chrisatkinscanada
      @chrisatkinscanada  Месяц назад

      You would need to get some rods and a lens support. Maybe mounting the matte box on the rods and not directly on the lens would help.

    i planed on the recon but the limit of just 2 filters no stacking...

    • @chrisatkinscanada
      @chrisatkinscanada  6 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, the Recon is pretty limited, and I think there are some new matte boxes coming out in this size range. I'll have to try some out to see if they offer more options.

    Hey dude, isn't the 28-135 a 95mm lens? Aren't all the matte boxes able to fit up to 95mm lenses?

    • @chrisatkinscanada
      @chrisatkinscanada  9 месяцев назад

      Hey James! Yes, it is a 95mm thread, but the outside of the lens has the grooves for the Sony hood, which doesn't seem to work the the SmallRig. I tried step-down rings and it just would not mount. The PolarPro Basecamp was the only one of the 3 I tried that would work. I hear the Tilta, Shape and Nisi may work.

    • @camerajames
      @camerajames 9 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks dude! I was wondering where I was getting the mix up there. I have been peeking at the Tilta as I also like that you can flip the filter to have the wheel on the left (from what I’ve heard). Did you notice any vignetting on any of them? Since the rings add depth?

    • @chrisatkinscanada
      @chrisatkinscanada  9 месяцев назад

      @@camerajames Yeah the Tilta looks really good. I'm wishing I had tried that and the Nisi out as well. If you get the Tilta I'd love to hear what you think. No, I didn't get any vignetting on the Polar Pro's. I like these Polar Pro matte boxes but I'm not so sure they're the best. If I get the chance I'd like to try some others out to compare.
